HD+ Screen Issues - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Nook HD+ running CM10. I have noticed I get problems every time I use it'
. These are screen presses to top or bottom bar when I'm not touchin screen. Happens no matter what I'm doing weather browsing net or on play store. Also happens when running stock nook. Doesn't go away till I lock screen then unlock. Always happens within 30 min of using device.
Some people have said it just dirt or smudges but this happens a lot and is really annoying. Also never had this problem with other devices such as galaxy note phone.
Could it be defective? Any advice?

It can be defective and not. This depends now (if i read your description) at many things.
Yes the main and one possibility can be dirty screen (many fingerprints). Why i think this is main reason? Because you describe that this random presses start after 30 min usage. You press screen within 30 min a lot i think.
Nook HD+ digitizer is not at glass, like most of phones and other stuff. Nook used some type plastic for it. I noticed this when i took apart my test item. Maybe they used some new technical solution on digitizer construction, but i have not seen this type before (wrong, just remembered that Dell uses same on some laptops with touchscreen). And the digitizer itself is rather soft. That is why you never had this with phones.
I know that B&N support is horrible, but try to ask anyway. Just see what they say.

About a month ago, there is one person report random touch occur but he had a screen protector on. If you have one on also, it maybe the cause of your problem.

This maybe true because these protection films are all very different material. Some may act with digitizer very strangely.
I actually use on all my 12 items Fosmon cheap anti-glare protectors and no problem. But yes, this Fosmon not the best one.

Thanks for replays. No screen protector. B&N support just asked me to reset device and said it def not a screen prob. I'll test it over next few days. Might just have to return it.

I have the exact same issue; it seems random when it happens to me.
The random extra "top or bottom" click and the lock/unlock to fix it is the same as me.
I just deal.

Thought today it might be caused by faulty sd card so removed it. Was stable for longer but still did it later on - so not sd card. B&M have agreed to replace it but will take up to 3 weeks as apparently I have to send it back to Poland. Better than nothingI guess.
Hopefully next one is more stable. Quite liked CM10 was running great off my 32gb sandisk.
While we are here. Is it normal for device to get warm? I presume it is.

Yes, especially on the back near where your left hand is when you hold it in portrait. That is where the microprocessor is.

Thanks for the help everyone. Nook getting picked up today. Will get a new one in a few weeks. Like I said hopefully that one will be more stable as I think it is a great device. With CM10 on it, it is fantastic value for money.

I have seen a few threads and youtube videos about screen issues on the nook HD+.. so this is a common issue?
I have a nook e-ink reader and the touchscreen is horrible.. it gets crazy with presence of minor dust ... unusable... ghost touches.. inaccurate touches.. horrible

Drag registers as tap

Hi,
I have been using my Nook Color with CM7 for about 6-7 months now (love it). I got mine as a refurb in a deal a while ago. My friend ordered the same and had me set it up with CM7 identically for him. All this while he has been complaining about the device's general lack of responsiveness and I have been loving mine. Recently he broke the USB cable and stopped using his device so I brought it home with me to test it out for him. And to my utter surprise, I find that his device registers more drags as taps than mine. I restored the device to Stock 1.4.1 and I get the same issue. I chalked it up to sluggishness and hoped the overclocking in CM7 would help. I next tried the CM9 (full of bugs) image. The responsiveness improved a lot and the image is quite usable. But the drag problem remained. I wasn't going to use that image anyway (no sound for videos) so I wiped it clean and installed stable CM7.1 that I have been using on my device for several months. I have tried using it same as mine over several hours and I still feel that it registers more drags as taps and starts an activity when I mean to browse. It seems like a small problem but is quite a big PITA. To be honest, I totally feel my friend's pain now.
Is there anything I am missing or does the Nook Color have quality control issues? A friend at work was complaining about his wife's NC not being very responsive ("like an iPad is") and I told him to try CM7. But I am thinking it is because some devices have bad digitizers (or whatever the touch layer is called). That explains why some people hate Nook Colors while others love them.
Any comments welcome.
Mine works fine so I fear your friend picked the bad straw.
I cant really talk for the masses as the Nook Color I have was and will remain my only B&N device.
Cant compare it to friends either as its not on sale in my country so Im sticking out like a sore thumb with it here being the only Nook owner.
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
A huge problem with the NC is the buildup of crap on the screen. This can lead to phantom touches, missed touches, etc, etc. I've heard of people using a re-calibration app for the screen, but I have been the recipient of many missed and phantom touches. Every time it is fixed just by doing a good screen cleaning (I don't use a screen protector). I keep a microfiber cloth under my NC in its case to clean it from time to time.
I would honestly find a good cloth to clean the screen with and see if that works.
Screen calibration
I just bought my wife a reconditioned Nook Color for Christmas and was about ready to send it back. There was no control over the screen, scrolling, dragging tracking were extremely frustrating. I found a mention of the Screen Calibration app in another thread. I downloaded it from the market, ran it and it did not look like it did anything, but it did! and best of all my wife went from disappointed with my Christmas present to her to very very happy.
Worked for us!

Degree's of Separation

So I was reading about some of the problems with screen separation and had a question.
My device showed up and looked perfect except for a tiny(tiny!) part of screen raised about a hairs width on the left side. Had it about a week now with moderate-heavy usage, and haven't noted more separation, still less than a hairs width.
Now it may be splitting hairs (lol!) but I was wondering if I should attempt an RMA? Will it begin to separate more? Besides this everything is great, no dead pixels etc... and little screen thing doesn't bother me, but I don't want it to get worse and then be stuck with the device outside my window for RMA.
Thanks in advance!
Oh, my, I wouldn't replace it for that. Now, I think you COULD, technically, because yes there's always the chance that it will get worse. But if it does, you can deal with it as a warranty issue then.
If my first unit had only had the small amount of screen separation and not a dead pixel RIGHT in the worse spot, I would have kept it in a heartbeat. The second replacement I received has more separation, and also a screen with a horrible color temp--whites are a dingy yellow, quite ugly. The worst thing is, Google is telling some folks (me included) that we MUST return the original unit rather than deciding to keep it and returning the replacement.
Hell, if they'd let me, I would have kept my original, dead pixel and all, rather than take a chance on getting a third one with other problems (including the yellow tint, which I simply hate on tablets). Instead, I had to process another replacement which will hopefully get here tomorrow and be in good shape. Fingers crossed.
So, in short: if all that's wrong with yours is a tiny amount of screen separation, then for your own sanity I strongly recommend that you keep it and not worry about it. Stick it in a case and you'll forget about it quickly enough.

My first one was not significant, but with use it became very pronounced. The first replacement arrived with a fairly pronounced 'hump' on the left side of the screen. I don't think anyone is 100% sure what the cause is, but there are likely two reasons: the screws and the adhesive.
If the separation gets worse with significant use (i.e. heat), then it's probably an adhesion problem. If there's separation, but it appears to not get worse, maybe that's purely due to the screws? I don't know, just guessing.
As yours hasn't become worse with a week's moderate to heavy use, it seems unlikely it might suddenly change. However, if you're like me, the anxiety of not knowing will drive you up the wall.
So far, Google seems contend to keep sending replacements until I'm happy - my third device (AKA second replacement) should arrive this week. However, I don't like asking for replacements, I find it to also induce anxiety, so I'm really hoping the new N7 is going to be perfect.
My 4th and 5th Nexus both have exactly the same separation you describe and I've just put them both in a tight case a bought from amazon and not looked back.

Beware though unless you bought through the play store you may need to deal with Asus for the warranty claim.

Mine had a very slight raise on the left, I still did the whole "washer" trick which initially improved it, but I'm not sure if it was even worth it.
The other thing to check for is "flicker" - on auto brightness (particularly in a low light situation), open up Maps, and see if you see any slight flickering. I have this issue, but turning off auto brightness and setting it to about 30% seems to alleviate the issue.
Otherwise, my device is working extremely well - I wouldn't want to RMA for these very slight issues because I couldn't guarantee I wouldn't get something worse.

This whole "flicker in Maps" thing fascinates me, because I swear I've had it on every Tegra 3 tablet I've tried (Transformer Prime, Excite 10, Excite 7.7, Nexus 7). The absolute worse was the Transformer Prime, and it wasn't limited to lower brightness levels.
That really leads me to believe that it's something inherent in the Tegra 3.

I've heard this from several people now - although there are others reporting they don't have this issue at all with the N7, which is why plenty of people are sending theirs back for replacements. I would have to see a steady stream of "sent mine back, new one has no flicker issue at all" to consider doing an RMA for the problem. Because for me it just isn't that much of an issue, really.
I just returned a 16gb back to Staples and ordered one from Google Play. The screen was very dark and dingy. Whites were yellowish. The colors looked very washed out compared to my other Android tablets.
I didn't have any separation that I could find though. The silver ring was slightly raised all around the unit and my screen protector fit right inside there to make it flush. I just ordered a new one through Play store, so I'm hoping I don't go from bad to worse.

my HD+ is possessed

Every now and then it will just start opening files by itself, you can't get it to stop. Wondering if the nook screen protector i'm using could be causing it...it seems to start when i'm in the stock browser. Not rooted but am using a sideloaded launcher.
Yes screen protector can.

I find with my screen protector that I have to wipe the oily prints off. They don't show but they make the device go wonky after a while.

Aside from the screen protector, I also notice that the touchscreen itself is very finicky. I means say if something that need to hit and hold like an icon to get menu popup. It's extremely hard to get the popup, even if you hold it pretty steady. I have nova launcher on both my Nook HD+ and Galaxy Note II, of course we can't compare build material here. Note II is just on another level in term of hardware wise. But the touch is just way more solid on the Note II.

Indeed, yes, I noticed it too. I figured it was just the way I was holding/clicking it, but I suppose not. It must be either a problem with the hardware, or as leapinlar stated, probably the stock ROM.
i was using one of the B&N clear protectors...I removed it and it still does it though not as bad....i'm hoping it's just the fingerprints causing it. I was in the B&N store earlier looking around, it started clicking on things on it's own, though not as frantic as when i had the screen protector on. With the protector on it was clicking so fast i couldn't get out of it, had to hold down the shutdown button.
i posted about the protector on the accessories forum.
Hm.. that sounds off krighton. I'm starting to think it could be a software issue. But before we dig into that, I think perhaps you should clean your screen as much as you can. If not, then you could try reinstalling your OS. I'm not too sure, is that possible? If so, or even if you can't, see if you can get anything done under warranty; since reinstalling could be a hassle.
I'm not too sure if warranty is available; I purchased the Nook HD+, and it didn't say anything about warranty, although I'd like to know. If anyone knows anything about warranty, could I please ask for your input? Thank you!
should get a standard 1 year warranty with the device....yeah sounds weird, cleaned the screen i 'll see what happens...would hate to mail it back in after rooting.
Just do 8bootloop b4 sending it back. But you should still at least try getting refund forthe screen protector if it cost you $20.
yeah, i'll check that out...actually bought 2, the non glare and the clear....didn't like the non glare so i'll eat that one but the clear should have worked without problems.
Which screen protector did you buy? I'm considering doing Invisible Shield. I have always had good luck with it on my phone.
I'm probably an odd person, but I never use screen protectors. It seems that the glass is tough enough for finger nails and the occasional contact with whatever else. However, I do believe in cases

I did it for fingerprints. The bare HD+ was awful. My anti-glare hides them, but I do have to wipe occasionally to prevent that wonky problem.

I always intend to get a screen protector, but never quite get around to it. That said, my Nook Color's screen is mint after a couple years' use with a case, but without a screen protector. My phone came used with a nick in the screen, but isn't much the worse for wear even bouncing around in my pockets for a year and change.
I haven't had any trouble with the clear B&N screen protector. I'm a believer in screen protectors since I somehow managed to scratch the screen of my first nook while plugging in the usb cable. I find the anti-glare type take away from the sharpness of the screen too much though.
screen is pretty sensitive, just a few fingerprints and it turns pages on its own. Guess i need to find a better screen protector, cleaning the screen several times a day is a bit annoying.
Could rooting have caused any of these problems? When it happens i have to turn off the nook, wipe it down really good and then it works for a while until it starts flipping pages on its own again. Maybe my nook is just hypersensitive to fingerprints.

[Q] My Nook HD+ body and screen are a bit concave, anyone else?

I purchased a Nook HD+ last weekend and I've noticed that on the long dimension the screen curves a bit inward. More so on one side than the other. I carefully placed a straightedge on the surface of the screen and eyeballed it by looking at light that leaked through. Observed light shining through between the surface of the screen and the edge of the straightedge at the middle of the screen. Worst case is about 1mm. If I look down the long edge of the body a slight curve is plainly evident.
I went by the store today and looked at all the display models and a few were much worse than my HD+. Salesperson agreed with me that it was what he was seeing too. Then said, "I have one and I've never noticed that before."
Whatever! Anyone else notice this on the HD+?
I asked about a replacement. Salesperson was not eager to do that. I still have a few days to think about that. Frankly I was a bit peeved. If no one else here has observed a concave screen, I'll insist they replace and make certain to get a straighter / less concave one.
I did a reflection test with my Nook HD+ screen and did not notice any distortion, the screen is flat.
However, if the battery is swelling a bit that might explain the distortion. And if the battery is swelling, I would insist on a replacement!

Mine has no curvature of the screen, but does have a very slight concave curvature on the left side just above the hole. But that is where I put my left thumb when holding the device in my left hand, so it is probably compressed a bit from hours and hours of holding it. And now that I look again the right side has a very slight concave curvature.
I have two devices and just looked at the other one, which is older, and it has just a slight curvature on the screen and distorts reflection just a bit. And both sides bend slightly.
I hope you have not caused me to be distracted by it now. LOL.

Update
Took the concave HD+ back and got a new one as a replacement. It is "straight" BUT almost every time I tap on the screen near the N button it makes an annoying sound. AND, something else, the bezel that surrounds the screen to the left of the N button makes a snapping/popping sound if you're holding it there and then release it. Like something is not glued or assembled right. At any rate something isn't right.
Yikes, back to the store again before this Thursday and the end of the 14 days.

I have the same problem you are describing. I am not sure if I should get it replaced. I have already sent my NOOK back once, because of a loose bezel and a LCD issue.
Did you have luck with your third NOOK? What would you say - should I get a third one?

Okay, I was able to get a new one. It was the last one in stock. I tested it in the store and it wasn't completely flat either. They guy said, he doesn't know why - hasn't happened before. He also said, he isn't sure if BN will produce anymore. They won't get any new ones. So I took the new, bent one.
The device is working fine, just the body is slightely bent again.
Well, I will have to live with it. I don't want to send it away and maybe just get my money back, because they stopped making the HD+.

[Q] Problem with NOOK HD+ LCD Screen distortion

Got my NOOK HD+ a few weeks ago and I have been really satisfied with it. I love the big screen and how smooth Cyanogenmod runs on it.
Yesterday I noticed that if I apply SLIGHT pressure on the plastic sides of the NOOK (not the screen!) the lcd distorts. With distortion I mean that the LCD fluid gets visable and you see white marks (just like oil on water) on the screen. Those disappear when the pressure goes away.
For those of you who might say "it is a touch screen, not a press-incredibly-hard-screen": I am really not pressing hard, just e.g. when you hold the NOOK with one hand - there is automatically pressure where your hand holds it.
Now: Have any of you experience that too? I know that LCD screens do that. I know how they work. But is it normal that I get that effect when I barely put pressure on the sides of the NOOK?
PS: For those who still don't know what I am talking about, this video shows this effect pretty good (even though the guy seems to press really hard ON the screen): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPtwGfzchA8
Thanks in advance. I just want to know if you guys thinks it is normal or of I should start flashing stock and claim a replacement.
Well I also have this "problem", I think it's normal.

Okay. Thanks for your reply. Really strange, but it makes me feel bette that the problem is out there and it's not only my device.
Today I noticed the bezel on the top right corner is coming loose, you can see between screen and bezel (around 2mm).
I called customer support and they said both problems should not be there and I will get a new NOOK in a couple of days.
Well, LCD distortion is there for all LCD screens(I'm pretty sure). About second problem through, yea you should get it replaced.

I thought so, too. If it were just for the distortion, i would have lived with it. But when I noticed the bezel coming off, this was another sign to get a new one. I just bought it like 2 weeks ago. Shouldn't happen IMO.
