USB Flash Drive Limit? - Nexus 10 Accessories

Is there a limit on max USB Flash Drive size on the N10's OTG support? I don't remember reading about any so far but I thought I'd better ask. Anyone using a 128GB?

The highest you have.

Well, I connected a 320 GB hard drive (via a powered hub) and it worked fine, so I'm gonna say no
Unless you run into file system limitations with fat32....

Whoops! Forgot that I connected my docking station with a 750GB drive inserted.

I tried formatting one partition to FAT32 as well, but no luck..is it bcz of lack of power to the HDD to run?
Of course you can connect. Only your external hard drive in addition to using the USB connection must have a second source of electricity. USB connector on the phone is too inefficient.

Ok..but how can I do that? My Ext HDD is USB powered..is there any way I can provide the HDD with power supply, using some kind of cables/adapters or something?
If your external drive has no additional power outlet, then connect it to your phone is not possible. Attempts to various modifications may damage the phone.
You need a Y split USB cable, something similar to this:

NOTE: that was just first USB cable I found using google, I'm not suggesting/related to that ebay seller in any way! Do your own research, you may be able to buy locally for cheaper.

Hmmm...so, it cannot be used as "portable" as a pendrive..as it needs external power (PC/Laptop OR some external battery)..so better option would be 64GB or higher pendrive (if needed desperately)

How to power 1 terabyte external usb drive

I recently got a 1 terabyte usb 3 external hard drive. I want to use it directly on my note2 via otg to backup my files and free up space on my device and microsd while I am away from my pc. I noticed my battery gets discharged really fast from powering up the drive. I was wondering how I could provide an external power to the drive or the note 2 itself while the drive is connected to the note2 via otg. Thanks guys.
Zerolemom battery. Other than a bigger battery I dont know of a different way.

I've had a couple if external hard drives that have two usb connectors. I read somewhere that once the drive starts and spins up, you really only need one connection.
If thats the case, and you do have a two usb connection cable for that drive, you could maybe connect one to another power source (computer usb, wall adapter, etc).
Don't know if any of that will actually work, but the theory sounds good in my head.

I have an external hard drive also but my Note 2 doesn't recognize it as a memory drive. It's powered by an ac adaptor so I dont see why it won't establish a connection.

Thanks I'll try it tomorrow.
You can get a USB hub, and do some modification on it.
When I was using my nexus s, I do this:

Just Solider + & - input in your usb hub (input), power your external hard drive with your power bank... So it won't suck your battery

I have mounted a 128Gig USB drive. No Problems! I will try to mount my 2Tb drive to my note via a Volcano external drive unit.

Same issue for me. It says blank memory device. I have a thermaltake 2 bay drive that is powered. I guess that it has to supply its own buss voltage. So much for the 2TB drive mounting.
Or you can get a powered USB Hub. So that the hub powers the HD and not your phone.
Something like this

Also pnce you get it powered up you might need to format it. I am unsure if this phone can read ntsf. Everything of mine is formatted to fat32 and exfat. So if you get it powered and it shows no memory or something it might be the format.

I do it all the time at work. A small usb hub that plugs into the wall for power will keep your phone from draining so fast.

I solved this issue by using Paragon exfat ntfs hfs from playstore.
The solution that comes to my mind is to just connect both devices to a computer, laptop, or netbook, open 2 windows and drag n drop.
But that powered hub does look like something fun to play with.

[Q] Limitations with USBHost Switcher?

Wow, I spent a lot of time chasing this problem, thinking it was some setting in my HD+. (Since I tinker a lot disabling services.)
I have USBHost Switcher installed and it has worked fine. (With a gender changer of course.)
So I tried a brand new 32 GB Kingston USB 3.0 thumb drive I just got. (Supposedly compatible with USB 2.0.)
Nothing. I get a warning that the USB drive was "unexpectedly disconnected." (A race condition? Too fast?)
It's formatted FAT32, with 16kb clusters from the factory. (If cluster size matters to the Nook.) But I can mount a 32 GB FAT32 card with 32 KB clusters, and I can mount an old 256 MB USB 1.0 thumb drive. So the problem seems to be following the USB 3.0 drive. Any thoughts about this and what I can do to get it to play?
Before I concluded that the problem is with the USB 3.0 flash drive, I had tried my Passport WD 1TB external drive as another test of USBHost Switcher. That drive had worked before, but in the meantime I had reformatted it to exFAT. Can't see it on the Nook HD+ anymore. (Bad experimenting. Changing too many variables at once.) I'm guessing not seeing exFAT is a kernel problem?
Sigh. I'm not doing too well here with external storage. I thought I was being smart when androidpolice announced an Amazon sale on this Kingston flash drive. But maybe there's a reason it was on sale?
Some things need to be behind a usb hub. Don't know if that's one of them.
I have an OEM 16gb USB flash drive and a SanDisk 32gb flash drive. Both are USB 2.0, but the OEM doesn't work on my nook.

The app TPUSBUmount can fix power issues removing the need to hide accessories behind a hub. Turn on the USBhostswitcher, open TPUSBUmount and connect your thumb drive. The TPUSBUmount will tell you if power if the problem

Thanks for the info. I tried the TPUSBUmount app and it reported a power problem with the Kingston USB 3.0 flash drive. Unfixable.
It turns out that the same flash drive also do not work with a Lenovo desktop machine.

Can it be done ?

Hello .... I'm curious if this tablet can be open up and have the memory removed, only to upgrade it to a higher level, is it possible ? Oh yeah and I know need it to be with one usb end and not a very long cable . Thanks

From what I saw there I'm assuming that the memory hard drive or card GB is internal to the board ? I want to replace the 32GB with a 64 GB card or whatever these HP tablets have . I don't want to get into un-soldering and soldering though .... Thanks

Everything is integrated. If you want to expand storage you can use an OTG Micro USB HUB an attached a USB 64GB flash drive, it will be bulky but works!

Of course it works, you can play movies directly from the USB flash drive. You will need to supply power to the USB drive, connected by wire or using a Power Bank.

Is a Micro USB Port, is the same as your charger. The one that you connect to your Tablet. Search and do some reading on how it works, is very simple but you have to understand how all comes together, there is information on this site also.
Once you have Android install on your tablet, it works the same as others Android or Tablet Devices.
I finally got a OTG Micro USB straight cable, usb on one end and micro on the other, try it out and nothing happens, is there a setting with the tablet that needs to be turn on or off ? thanks

Its ......Kitkat .... Android 5.1.1 version and cm-11-20161219-NIGHTLY-MLQ-tenderloin .... This is very stable ... Thanks
The ROM that you are using is from the Developer Milaq.
I installed the latest Nightly dated December 26 of 2016, of the ROM you are using.
https://milaq.net/downloads/tenderloin/cm-11.0/
After a fresh installed I connected the OTG Micro USB HUB, then connected the HP Touchpad cord charger to the OTG and finally the USB flash drive ( SanDisk Cruzer Glide 16GB). You will noticed that the USB flash indication light starts flashing and a notification on the Left top side on Android tells you ( USB Storage in USE ). Then you go to the File Manager and you will see USB Storage, when you touch it you will see all the files on the USB flash drive and you can play your movies directly from there at the same speed as if were on the internal storage. When you are done, go to setting and storage and eject the USB Flash drive. Is very simple!

I don't see nothing since nothing happens once I connect it, though if I use the cable to connect to my computer I am able to see the tablet internal drive, but not to a flash drive from tablet to flash . This is why I was asking what's exact cable type for this tablet port . I'm thinking it isn't the correct one . There so many different sizes out there. Thanks for your suggestion, much appreciated

And for the second time this is the OTG cable that I have, which I posted the link : https://www.amazon.com/Adaptor-Powered-Charging-Charger-Connector/dp/B00LTHBCNM/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1486568545&sr=8-31&keywords=micro+usb+otg If you look at the specification of how it works it tells you is a "Micro Usb HUB Adaptor with Power Powered"
The HP touchpad or old devices do not offer power to the micro usb port, you need a Y adapter one to supply power to the USB flash drive and the other one for data.
That is why I said, do some research to understand the connection, which it clearly shows on the Amazon product.
Oh ok now I got you it also needs power to make it work, the tablet alone isn't good enough . See, I was hoping just a simple connector going into the tablet Micro and have on the other end usb female connector were by I could plug in a flash stick without power needed . Thanks for all your help

That will work with devices that allow power out from the charging port. The work around for old devices is the Y connector, with the connector I posted you can use a USB Keyboard, a USB mouse and a USB flash drive all at once, turning a tablet into a regular desktop PC. Like I posted your ROM will work and you can play movies directly from the USB drive with no loss in performance, with only your basic ROM nothing else is need it.
You are very welcome and have fun!

Dex and 2TB HDD?

I have just started using the DeX as my daily driver. However the problem that I'm facing is when connecting my NTFS 2TB Portable HDD.
My DeX setup is connecting to 24" monitor using this UGREEN dongle, I use a wired Logitech Keyboard and MX Anywhere Mouse.
I have installed this app to help with NTFS. And when I connect the HDD directly to the phone via the OTG dongle it works fine, take time to show in the app but it does. But when I connect it to the UGREEN dongle, the app opens up and notifies me and asks for permission, the minute I click on allow, my monitor will go black and the HDD will make a clicking sound. I have to disconnect the HDD and the dongle, reconnect the dongle to make DeX work again.
I thought maybe my third party dongle didn't have enough juice to support the 2TB HDD so I went to my local Samsung store and tried on their DeX Station, same thing only difference was that the screen did not go black but the HDD made the clicking noise. The sales rep at the Samsung store told me that DeX only supports 512GB because their phone supports max of 512gb SD card.
What am I doing wrong? Or is 2TB just too much?

lol that dosent make sense to me.
what does is probably the power draw from the usb ports might be too much. let me test with different adapters i have that provide power to the HDD.
also the file system might be the issue even if you have the correct libs. try formating to extfat.
heres the proof that the phone can do at least 2tb.
i used a 3.5 regular hdd and sata to usb 3 powered adapter plugged into a usb c multireader adapter that was also powered externally.
i bought and installed paragon software because my 1tb drive appeared right away but not my 2tb. first was gpt extfat and the other gpt ntfs .
i have the latest dex station with me also and can test but i expect it to work since it did on a crappy usb c multi reader.
and here is the proof than an official dex station can also read it.
i have 8 tb and 16tb drives but im lazy. so 2 tb will have to do.

Yes but all those are powered HDDs. For me a powered 3tb and 5tb works perfectly well.
The issue is with the 2tb. Like I said when I connect it to my phone via the OTG adapter it works fine but not with the dongle.
I thought it was an issue with my dongle since it's not powered. So I headed to the Samsung store and tried on their Dex Station but it didn't work. Which is strange because the Dex Station is powered.
