so i have a gs3 and a nex7 - i've been flashing roms on both devices for a little while now using cwm rec-
i've flashed cm 10 cm 10.1 (4.2.1) and pa 3.0 on my nex 7
i've flashed all of the same roms and also pac man and now on liquid smooth (4.2.2) on my gs3
something i notice is that on my gs3 every time i'm flashing a new rom i get another "0" folder on the internal sd card that's full of all the basic folders that the os fills up i.e. movies, music, dcim along with any folders that my apps create - ti backup etc
- so what i've been doing is just manually managing what's on the internal card for the gs3 - i just pull the crap back from the deepest '0" folder back out 1 level and delete what i don't need and delete the empty "0" folder - i keep clockwork backups and stuff that takes bigger memory on my external sd so i can keep the internal clean
something strange i've noticed is that after flashing some of the same roms on the nex 7 i am getting the same extra "0" folder just like with my gs3, but for some reason i can only see it in clockwork mod recovery actually on the nexus 7 - i can't see the "0" folder using win 7 file manager via usb connection
i've looked at ll the obvious things on windows and it's just not there -
can anyone tell me if there's something i have to change to be able to see the "0" folder so i can mange what's in there as well?
read the threads about the 0 folder issues with 4.2+?
flash newest recovery to device to prevent it from happening in the future
I believe I'm on the latest version of cwm and the gs3 is a newer version of android then my nexus 7 right now
Its on the 4.2.1 version of paranoid
Gs3 is on 4.2.2 liquid smooth
Edit
I see all the threads on 0 folders - and the fixes
I just didn't see a scenario where someone could only see the 0 folder in cwm not windows file mgr

Windows its only seeing what your Nexus is showing it. The virtual sdcard that the current user sees, i.e. /0. Windows is not seeing the raw partition.
ok why does it see the entire partition on my gs3 then? using the same software (same version anyway)
i checked i'm on 6.0.2.3
i just want to clean up the internal sd card and keep it clean moving forward with new roms or w/e
if i go into recovery and choose /mount and storage/ format sd card - will i still be able to boot on my current rom or does it need something that's there -
i know on my gs3 i can basically erase anything on the internal sd and it doesn't affect the rom or boot process - just missing info for apps
btw we are saying that the nexus only shows windows the current user partition - i guess it does the same for apps like file manager as well - because i can't see the 0 folder there either
is there not a setting or app that will allow me to choose what windows or apps can see on the sd card?
with root access you can view ANYTHING under /data/media
with only user access you can only see /data/media/0
someone posted up a nice file manger on gogole + i tried out and it sees everything -
not that i can see everything at least on the device i''m just more confused about how the sd partition is formatted
i took a quick pic to see where it goes automatically
i now realize that everything is put there in triplicate -
once under root/sdcard
once under root/storage/emulated/o
and once under root/storage/sdcard0
are these all the same thing some how?
so confused - i guess i'd really just like to know why i only have 2.38 gb of open space on this device
they are called SYMLINKS
your space is probably being eaten up by backups twrp/cwm?
look above the 0 folder for TWRP or Clockworkmod folder
also, ES File explorer from the play store would work just fine for browsing files. it has root access
I think I once heard about the n7 have a protect root files feature sort of like how the psp has protect flash 0 on the newer cfws..

i'm kinda back where i started right now
i just took a few screen shots to compare some stuff
the 3 folders that match each other i can see with a file manger are what's under 0 when i look with clockworkmod
but the /sdcard dir by itself is still info i can' t see with a file manager or windows -
you are right about the backups - i know a backup is 2 big folders from experience w/ my gs3 and i have 2 of them - they are eating the memory - i can't kill them in cwm and i can't see them any other way
ugh
it feels like my only option is to format the sd card -
i'm back to the same ? as earlier -
if i choose format the sd card from cwm will i still be able to boot into my current rom?
ES File Explorer
give it root rights
browse to /data/media/clockworkmod
delete what you want
OR
i think rom manager has an update that lets you manage your backups....
you WILL NOT see them from windows.

that app can see less then file wrangler that i've already been using - and file wrangler lets you pull up 2 columns to drag and drop
backups are not in the folder you specified - still can't see what cwm can with a file manager app - all of these apps i've been using have root permission - that's how i was able to see the paths that started with /.root that i mentioned earlier
rom manger did have what you mentioned - i killed one of the 2 backups and got a bit more space -
i also used file wrangler to kill some of the roms i have been trying that were still on there
what's a normal amount of free space to see on a 16gb device? i have 1 1gb movie and almost no pics right now i have about 5.17gb free
i wish someone knew the answer to my ? about formatting the internal card and still being able to boot my current rom....

your rom has nothing to do with whats on the internal storage, it does not require anything from it. if you dont want to keep anything thats on there, then format it within android...

Before I upgraded from a 4.1 to a 4.2 based rom, I copied all my files from my sd card and then flashed the Rom. Then I formatted my phone's storage so I wouldn't have that weird 2 sd card file system going and so that I could see all my old files which I pasted back onto my phone. When I boot into cwm, and want to install a .zip, I see a couple folders such as the cwm folder and venom folder and legacy folder, and I find that my sd cards files are not under root and I have to go to /0. If I go into a file explorer such as we file explorer, I can't see any files under the the place where those several folders are. Any ideas?

I've just been searching these threads for the exact same issue. Wondering if it would be possible to take a nandroid, erase system and everything and either restore or reload my room from scratch to fix this? My phone says it's running low on memory while it still shows almost 10gb free when attached to my computer. I assume this is the problem...

Yeah, ive tried to format my phones internal storage but the problem is still there. Though it does free up a lot of space when I do it. I think it says it is low memory because there are duplicate files of everything on your sd card
Today, I have experienced a very "odd" problem. I have just found out that there is a folder called "storage" visible in my Internal Storage.
When I thought that, since it was visible, it did not contain much useful files (Only 2 xml files I found which would be in both internal and external storage) so I deleted that folder and everything in my SD Card and Internal Storage vanished.
I found out that the "storage" folder had a link to both storage devices but the weird thing is, why was that there and why is it visible? I could of sworn that I have never seen that before on my Xperia Z...
Can anyone else see their "storage" folder in the internal storage or is it just me?

but this is totally different from what I have experienced.
From Windows, Internal Storage would have a folder called "storage" with another folder called "01" inside the storage folder. So "Internal Storage/storage/01/" if it was read on a Windows PC. inside the storage folder, there is just 1 folder called "01", nothing else. inside "01" folder, there are ONLY 2 .xml files which are the same as the 2 .xml files you would have by default in the root of your Internal and External Storage.
In short- Internel Storage has a folder called storage, inside storage has a folder called 01, inside 01 there are only 2 .xml files. The strange thing is, if it were linked to Internal/External Storage, why only 2 .xml files are visible in the 01 folder?
EDIT: When I tried to delete the storage folder (At the time I did not know that it was linked) Windows loading bar for deleting files did not move so I had to cancel it. Once cancelled, everything in my external/internal storage was wiped off. Thankfully, I recovered most of my lost pictures with Recuva
Not sure but I think this folder came somehow from the recovery maybe a bug.
I hope you didn't lost important things.

Yes, this is very strange. I remember when i did see this after i bought my phone i was thinking this must be an bug. Another thing, in root i also have a folder named: ext_card and it is the same as sdcard1 here. Sdcard1 is my microSD card i have, but why so many folder linked to the same folders.
At root i go to storage, inside i have folders: emulated, removable, sdcard0, sdcard1 usbdisk.
Inside emulated i have 0 and legacy. etc etc
All of them are linked and goes to the same internal card and external card,

If it really is a bug, we need to know what did actually cause this to happen.
And yeah, Recuva was really useful for me

Too many linked folders make it confusing, why would there be a linked folder visible in the Internal Storage though? this is what is really confusing me right now.

Strange, this is the first time I have ever seen this. I only saw this folder today and I have been on custom roms based on stock xperia firmware android 4.2.2 for ages now... Why would it appear just today? I don't think multitasking will cause this to happen since it doesn't create any folders/files related to it (afaik).
I've had something like this happen where in emulated/0 (my main internal SD storage) there was another 0 folder that freaked out recoveries and such. I had the similar "can't delete from windows" thing, but using a in-recovery file manager I just deleted it, problem solved. tl;dr if you want to delete it and its causing problems delete it from recovery.

Windows did not make any progress in deleting it, it was stuck on the Preparing to delete... window. Once I cancelled it because it took too long, everything from sd card/ internal storage was gone. All because of that storage folder inside my Internal Storage...

I don't think it has anything to do with an upgraded android version. Like I said before, I have been on Android 4.2.2 a long time now (Upgraded when the firmware first came out) and I have never seen this folder before. I have just seen it yesterday. Another strange thing is that after I attempted to delete the storage folder, Everything was gone INCLUDING that storage folder. I haven't seen the storage folder after that happened. I'm going to go flash another rom and full wipe to see if the storage folder pops up again.
EDIT: Right, no there is no more storage folder in Internal Storage after a full wipe and formatted everything! Very strange indeed...
Wierd storage folder symlink inside internal storage!

I know this is a very old thread but I face the same issue in Android 5.1.1 now and I too deleted the folder named storage only to see that all the data from the sd card has vanished because of that. Any idea what caused this buggy symlink to be created?
All my data is now gone because I just deleted one folder inside my sdcard, and I didn't even think to backup anything since I didn't even dream that deleting a single folder will delete the parent folder! Again recuva was my friend but still I am not able to recover everything in internal storage, any suggestions on what to use to scan the internal storage?

Did you upgrade to newer firmware using a zip? That's a common bug when upgrading via zip.
The only proper way is to backup ur entire internal storage and flash a full ftf. Then you will not have the annoying symlink.

I did do a factory reset before flashing a new firmware. Not sure what else I should do..
And as for the internal storage recovery, I followed these different guides but raw file using vhdtool and recuva did not give me any single file that was last present in my internal memory and even extundelete didn't return any single file that was in the internal storage, some of these tools return hundreds of text files and images that I had no idea was in my internal storage but none of them return me any of the hundreds of images and videos that I was sure were in my internal storage.

Yes but if you factory reset on 4.4.2 (for example) and then flash 5.0.2 fw via zip in recovery, you will get the annoying folder symlink.
The only way to upgrade to lollipop is by flashing a full ftf (which will wipe internal sd) after that you won't have the annoying symlink.
But you flashed zip instead of ftf and discovered the folder symlink which seemed not harmful to delete so you deleted it. Right?
Then there's no chance in getting the data (photos etc) back.
I was the same situation as you, twice, I tried every possibility to recover my photos but it ended up with nothing. Everything was gone.
On a mechanical harddrive, when you wiped data, the data will only be gone when the wiped sectors are overwritten (e.g. format harddrive, which overwrite with empty buffer).
As long as the wiped data in those sectors are not overwritten, you'll be able to recover almost all - if not all - data you deleted.
On flash memory instead, (such as ssd drives and internal storage of our phone) deleted data is immediately deleted.
(that's also one of the reasons on Android, you never have to defragment the internal sd, same story for an ssd)
I'm sorry for u to say but I'm afraid you're unfortunately lost the photos and there's no way to get it back.
But my advice to you is:
Never upgrade between android versions (e.g. 4.4 > 5.0) using a zip installable.
Only use full factory images (ftf), they will wipe internal sd in order to get correct mappings so backup everything before flashing.
Once u on a firmware, an update to the same firmware is allowed (e.g. from one 5.0.2 rom to another 5.0.2 rom).
I hope it helps u in the future.
Regards

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation, after wasting two whole days trying everything described anywhere in the internet for recovering data from internal storage, I have also learnt it the hard way that it won't be possible to recover my data. Anyways the good news is google photos had backed up most of my photos, so it would actually be the call recordings, whatsapp history and other documents that I would have to loose permanently.

As for the upgrade issue, is this only for lollipop or any android version? I have never seen anything similar when I upgraded from 4.0 to 4.1 or 4.2 to 4.4 e.t.c. If I shouldn't use zip installable to upgrade android versions how else do I upgrade to kitkat or lollipop? I don't think there are any factory images published for lollipop for my phone since support for it ended long time ago.

Am again reviving this old thread as today I deleted a folder named sdcard inside my oneplus 3's internal storage and lost everyrhing. Though I had never upgraded my phone using any zip file and always went with the OTA update
I also made a thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/help/strange-t3537998
This info is all over the place on the forum so I decided to add it to its own little area for those who need it. Enjoy
I am going to step by step tell you how to root and get CWM recovery in hopes this will help someone and in turn they can help me by at the least giving me a nandroid backup or something so I can restore my brick. I take no credit for these meathods theywere done by other XDA members I am only repeating what I searched and read throughout the XDA threads if you want to know who the members are Google or search XDA.and I take no responsability for anything you do to your device thats on you this is all for your reading pleasure.

Do we have any ROMs being ported or developed for me to actually need to install CWM? I have two SERO 7 LTS for my girlfriends kids and I love to Tinker with every android I get my hands on. I already have them rooted and over clocked with some Xposed modules.

Some people like to have nandroid backups after rooting their device and as far as ROMs this device may be low priced but after you do the mem swap with 32gb and having a 1.6ghz dual core your batting 100% maybe people will figure out the financial advantage here
Oh that's true, I'm not a developer or anything near it. But I get what you're saying if I take a nandroid back up, than there's not as much worry about me tinkering either as I could just restore my backup +1 to you.

Nandroid backup or RKImage stock?
May you be much blessed, kind sir!
I don't know what your status is yet on Jan 10th but I have successfully fixed a Sero 7 LT for a friend's daughter using the stock recovery bootloader menu and an RK image. Make sure your Sero is fully charged overnight on the 2 amp adapter that comes with it. You will know it is fully charged because if you unplug it and then plug it back in after 10 seconds, there will be no "charging" symbol that comes up on the screen after about 10 seconds from plugging it in. It will stay dark.

Download Option #1 from Mediafire
Use 7Zip to expand, you'll need at PC card reader adapter for your Micro SDHC and possibly a USB to SDHC reader. For some reason my HP laptop doesn't like to read adapted micros in the normal slot on the laptop, so I used a MediaGear XtraDrive MGXS-200-HC on my Win7x64.
Once 7Zip has expanded the .img file rename it to update.img and then place it on the root of your micro SDHC. I did a quick format with mine beforehand just to be sure there were no other files that were going to interfere.
Do the normal bootloader from your Sero 7 LT: Volume Down & Power until Hisense, then with Android on his back, POWER FIRST and VOLUME UP once.
The option is down about 3/4 of the way "RKimage"
It will be looking for Update on root, which is the only option. Select with Power button and it will tell you it found it and would like to verify. Select OK and then wait. The first time it goes through the file, nothing will happen. It will CRC the file, boot to the spinning circle screen as if it is a bootloop and then the screen will go blank.
Simply press the power button quickly to turn the screen back on and it will tell you it has found the file it needs and are you ready to restore the update.image. Touch yes, and the whole process will start over. This time when Android finishes, it will boot correctly and ask you for your language input as if right from the store!
Good luck!
Who knows if it is working or not?
I followed the steps listed here for using the external memory card as internal memory. Unfortunately, the only thing I can definitively say about it is that it will make ES File Explorer stop working.

I have been using ES FILE EXPLORER ever since I did this and have not had that issue. Weird!
Still can't get it to work
I followed the instructions and tried to use the vfold file you created so I can use my external SD card as internal memory. It still won't work. When I try to move your vfold file to the etc folder, it won't let me, saying that it is a read-only drive. This is very frustrating. I can't imagine what on earth Hisense was thinking when they made the SD card internal. Isn't there a way to just switch the names of the SD card and the external SD card?

Its not his sense its the jellybean os that's makes the card internal. Are you rooted? You have to be rooted for this procedure, then you move the vold file using root explorer or some other program that will allow you to change from read only to write.
I desperately want to install CWM to my Hisense Zero 7 Lite but in your instructions I have NO IDEA what "chmod" means. Once I figure that step out I should be good. Thank you in advance.
That is the permissions you need a file explorer then get the option for the file and choose permissions and change the permission and save it
CWM Help : (
Holy cow it has taken me a week to figure this out and now I feel like a total idiot. I was trying to change the permissions of the file "update.img" which it would not allow me. It never occurred to me in days that "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh" WAS the file I needed to change permissions for. I've read that line at least a hundred times, ha ha. Once it clicked that I was trying to alter the wrong file it took me literally 5 seconds to fix the issue and FINALLY install CWM. Thank you for this post and for replying to my question. Awesome. Now I shall go wipe the stupid sweat off my brow.
Question about internal memory
Hey all, thanks to this excellent guide I now have my tablet rooted. Now that I'm rooted I've been using SnapPea to move apps to the SD card, which was my goal all along. But since I'm still new to this, I was wondering if it would be better to follow the part of the guide that says "Use EXT SD card as Internal Memory." Is there any difference between moving apps to SD with SnapPea and making the SD internal memory? It would be nice if it was all one block and I didn't have to choose what went where (plus some apps don't work right if they are on the SD). Thanks!
Cant get my Sero 7 lite to use the sd card as the storage
Hey there, done lots of reading. I got the tablet rooted, (checked with root checker and titanium backup) HOWEVER I cant get Super user to update its binary, it keeps saying fail. I can access the root and move stuff around, but no permission window pops up. I did the vold file and got it transferred into the external SD card, and system and etc folder. Now if I reboot it, it gets stuck on the Smart screen unless I remove the SD card.
The tablet is now reading the internal flash as if it were an external SD card, and not showing a nand flash. I'm quite stuck. I assume its probably a little thing that needs changed but i cant find it anywhere!
16GB Internal SD...with apps?
So I've got my 16GB SD card showing as the internal SD.
Now, I can't install/move apps to the new internal SD storage.
How can I fix this?
Thanks!
First off, I apologize for my noob-ness. but I have no idea what "chmod 644 /" means. How do I initiate the chmod 644? I have managed to root my sero 7 lite, but CWM didn't install.
Also are there any custom roms using a newer version of android available yet? Thanks a lot!
CWM RECOVERY This is from Takenover83's post
#4 First download the ClockworkMod Recovery Image here: CWM Recovery Image Download
#5 Upload the image to your external SD card/ Micro SD and change the name of the file to " update.img "
#6 use a file manager like root explorer or ES file manager or whatever and right click the file and chmod 644 /system/etc/install-recovery.sh (This is extremely important it will not work otherwise)
#7 I just simply plugged my SD card into the tablet and it updated automaticaly but if that isnt the case for you go into the stock recovery and Choose the option to update via rkimage from external storage

I'm trying to make an external SD card act as internal. For some reason, I get a fail to copy error when trying to copy the vold.fstab file to the etc folder. It says it doesn't have permission. Any ideas? Did the rooting process not take properly?

EDIT: I managed to finally make it work, by downloading another superuser app. This one simply called Superuser. I was able to copy to the root folders and change the file permission in the system folder after this through the ES File Explorer app. How do I know that the system is using the external sd card as internal now? In settings it still looks the way it did before.
We do have a kernel source for this tablet.

Search for Sero 7 LT
With that we could get CM13 and what not ported over. Something tells me given the info @dolorespark mentioned with the Sero 7 Pro kernel source having quite a bit of bad coding that the Sero 7 LT will have the same issues potentially.
Hi guys and gals, I have a Hisense sero 7 le e2371, as far as I can tell it is the same as the lt lite, the difference is it is the Australian version! My question is, how to install twrp, it is rooted, but i cannot install anything via stock recovery, no fastboot mode, no bootloader mode! Any help will be greatly appreciated. PS, it is running kitkat 4.4.2, i ultimately want to upgrade it to lollipop or even marshmallow, one day, lol thanks in advance

how did u root
I recently upgraded to CM 11 to fix wifi failing to scan and discover access points.
I now seem to be missing ~4GB of storage. Settings/Storage/Internal Storage shows 12.67GB total space, 803MB available, and only about 7.2 GB accounted for (7.07GB Apps, pictures @ 504KB).
Drives app shows 2.6GB "other" but no large files.
Ideas?
If you upgraded from stock to CM11 then your old media files are still there from stock, just hidden. Use a root file manager to look at /data/media. Any files there that are not in the 0 folder are sold stock media files you can delete. Files in the 0 folder are the media files you put there since upgrading.

Thanks. I was upgrading from CM10, but I'll check there just in case. I know the history of this device had been through the manual partition resizing process, so don't know if something is now out of whack between the file system and the actual partition sizes.

Looks like that was the issue. There was a clockwork backup directory in there. Thanks so much!
Hello folks.
I've been deleting files form SD card, using MTP. Deletion works without error, files are not shown any more.
However: The SD-card does not show any more free space as before the deletion.
Any suggestions?

Hello folks.
I'm wondering if my question is not clear.
I have 30MB left on my SD, even though I did delete a bunch of stuff.
I really could use a hint - would like to copy some new content to it, once I get more "free" space...
Well, how have things turned out?
You know about the extra restrictions regarding external storage added in Android 6. You can barely use the SD card as it is, let alone have Windows do things to it.
Have you tried checking the storage with a file manager? ES File Explorer and X-plore could be granted some sort of write permission - see if the files are still there and delete them through your phone - although those two have a recycle bin option, make sure you uncheck it first.
And start using Temasek's custom ROM in the first place. If you're using the SD card as much as I do, that's the only reasonable option when it comes to Android 6.
