[BUG] Some external videos cause complete Video Play subsystem failure until reboot! - Nexus 4 General

I have just opened a bug for Android about video play subsystem failure on Nexus 4! None of my previous Android devices had this problem and this is really bothering me! Anybody else having the same problem?
Android Bug report Link (Please star this if you want it fixed):
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=50814&thanks=50814&ts=1361480369
Problem Description:
I have downloaded a video file to my Nexus 4, opened it in stock Gallery application tried to play it with stock video player and the Gallery Application hanged and crashed! After that, you can't play any video files with the device, not even video files recorded with the device camera. The problem persists until the device is rebooted.
Sometimes, when I open an application that fetches thumbnails of videos (like VidTrim), then without even trying to play the unsupported video file the video play capabilities of the device are completely gone!
You can download a video file that causes this problem from here:

I'm not having that problem. Is it only if you play HD files in .mkv format?

Yes, that is why I'm asking if it's just MKV files.

I don't know if happens only for MKV files. I have other MKV files that does not cause this problem. But this specific file causes the problem %100 on my stock 4.2.2 device.

Can some people with Stock Android 4.2.2 and Nexus 4, try to play the file that I shared and see if the problem occurs?
If the problem occurs, after playing that file, you shouldn't be able to even play videos recorded with your Nexus 4.
Please use the stock video player only for testing.

Wow. Finally! I've got the same problem. Maybe because N4 has minimum codec? I wish 4.3 can solved this.
Edit: In my case, even I can't play YouTube when it happened.

Good to see other people having the issue. It's very annoying.
Can you please "star" the issue so that Google gets notified and fixes it. You can also write a comment under the issue:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=50814&thanks=50814&ts=1361480369

By the way, YouTube does not work for me too after trying to play that video file.

Yep, i've noticed it in the last month or so, some of the transcoded movies off my plex server cause it and the phone then requires a reboot before it will play anything at all, good to see it hasn't gone unnoticed by others.

Considering "MKV" is really just a container for other codecs, have you tried seeing what the video and audio are encoded in for this file as well as a file you are not having issues with?

Well, I don't know what that will be helpful for? I'm not the one to fix this problem. Google engineers should do that.
Regardless of the video format and codecs, if the format is not supported then it should not cause all the videos subsystem to break down. It should just say its not supported.
By the way, Android 4.3 improved a little bit. Now the problem is not so easily reproducible like in 4.2.2.

Can't play any video on my Nexus one

I'm having troubles playing video's of any kind on my Nexus one. For example in the youtube app the video starts loading but it only shows the first screen and the audio just plays fine. The same thing happens when I want to play a video file in the gallery.
I'm using an official stock rom, the second update I think and my device is rooted. I already tried a soft reset but that didnt work.
Can anyone help me on this?

HD Videos won't play on YouTube!

Guys,
So I recently, successfully, followed the [ROM][CM7] [v1.3] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards thread to use CM7 on an SD Card on my Nook Color 1.4.2. Everything worked out flawlessly and everything seems to be working just fine.
I have the Original Nook OS running via Internal Memory (If I boot without SD Card); and CM7 running via SD Card.
One issue that i've run into is that my YouTube is not playing HD Videos. If I try to play any HD Video, I get the error..
"There was a problem playing this video.
Please touch to retry".
If I click the "HD" button on top-right corner to disable HD, the video starts playing just fine in SD Quality. All SD Videos play just fine.
I have not been able to play any HD video at all on YouTube.
The YouTube I'm talking about is the YouTube App available on the Google Play Store.
Is it just me or do HD Videos not play on the Nook Color via YouTube?
Thanks!!
Unfortunately it depends on the format the hd is encoded to... it is hit and miss.
One thing that MAY help is to install MX player and the codec pack for it.

Thanks for replying Dizzy.
I installed MX Player and it's codecs; I have to say that my actual MP4/MKV files are actually running pretty smooth & nicely in this player .... however, YouTube HD Videos still won't work.
I think what bothers me is that it's not appearing as a "hit and miss" with me; it's appearing as a total "miss" with me and I want to make sure it's not just me. Over the last couple of days I must have tried something like 30 ~ 40 HD Clips - absolutely none of them work - each gives the same message.
Could it be something else in my setup?
Thanks.

Ok - so basically HD Videos do not work on YouTube on the NC at all; that is fine, I think I just primarily wanted to make sure it's not just me or my setup. I know "HD" isn't really conducive on the NC anyways since it's max resolution is 854 X 480 ... it's not even 720p.
Thanks for clarifying.
Is there any way to modify the YouTube apk so that it won't play in HD? It's been getting annoying how it keeps trying to play in HD and just fails.

I'd like to know this as well.
Try the apk in the following link to play HQ youtube clips
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282736
Only problem is that Google play detects this as an old version and will try and update. You could always break the market link with Titanium Backup or similar program

Actually the resolution is 1024x600.
A bit better than the lower res 854 x 480.

Try starting youtube app...
go menu... Settings... if High quality on mobile is checked... uncheck it... if it is unchecked... check it.
Mine is checked...
NOTICE: with it checked or unchecked... if you select a HD video... it will ALWAYS initialize in HD mode and you have to tap on the HD logo top right of video to avoid the error message.

I'm Running ICS and the only option in the Settings is to Disable HD over 3G, which the Nook doesn't have. Clicking the HD button disables HD playback for a Playlist but as soon as you leave the Playlist it defaults to HD again. Also HQ is also disabled if you Disable HD in the App. What I need is a patch for the Youtube app so that it thinks my Nook isn't HD capable as it's supposed to.

This was already suggested in this thread, but you can install an older version of YouTube that does not detect you are running in HD and it will play HD videos in HQ. They are decent quality and do not crash. But there is no tablet interface either. To keep play store from updating or bugging you, uncheck automatic updating for YouTube and tell it to not notify you of updates. Get the older version here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17983409
It is version 2.1.6

I already know about that but I updated to CM9 to get the new ICS interfaces. I'd rather suffer the HD presses(Which are less difficult in the latest UI overhaul from Google) then Downgrade. I'm just expressing that I'd be interested if anybody wanted to try and patch it. I have nowhere near the coding skills to create a patch myself(I'm standing on Earth while the Skills are on Neptune).

[Q] Video playback issues

I've been using MX player to watch my videos on the One, and I've got some issues with it. The video occassionally freezes (audio continues) and I have to either wait a couple of seconds for it to catch up, or I have to rewind/forward to get it moving again. This happens on every single video I've tried (at least ones that I've copied over via USB) and I can't seem to figure it out. Already tried using the custom ARM7 neon codec too as suggested from MXplayer but it didn't make a difference. HW+, or software renderer does not make a difference either. Anybody else having these problems ? If so, were you able to fix it, or find a workaround ?
Forgot to add that I'm still using the stock ROM.
Try uninstalling the codec pack, you don't need it unless MX Player specifically asks for it. I can't say I've had video go out of sync before though.

Thanks! I installed it just yesterday to see if it makes any difference. Until then I was using the default codec that comes with the player. I'm using the free version of MX player if that makes any difference.

No one else having this problem ?
Maybe try a factory rest and see if that fixes it?

Yep - also have this problem sometimes - not tried uninstalling the codecs yet so will give that a try.
You could try VLC Player for android - works great for me with no lag or O/S problems.
Im Rooted, Tampered and running Android Revolution 9.2, with custom 1.29 Audio files(tfa) and PureXaudio 4.0

[Q] 4.3 - No longer plays video files

Hi guys,
I updated my Nexus 7 to 4.3 today and I'm now no longer able to play my previously working video files. I've used both VLC and AVP, the file plays but I get sound only and no picture.
The thumbnails for the files are displaying correctly. These are movies in .mkv and .avi format which used to work with no problems.
Has anyone else experienced this and do you think it may be a 4.3 issue or perhaps an app compatibility problem with the new Android version?
Thanks.

It isn't just you. A number of video players are not functional with 4.3. All you can do is review them in the play store and tell them. I am sure most of the App Devs are probably aware of this, but who knows...
This also happened from 4.1.2 to 4.2, just wait a day and it will be fixed by app updates

This is true, but most were a couple of weeks to be re-coded, including MX Player. What is funny is that right after I installed 4.3, MX player and a couple of others worked for a few hours then I got the Unsupported Android Version. I thought that was rather odd...
Cheers guys, I figured as much. Just wanted to make sure nothing got botched along the way!
Thanks for the replies.

Vplayer now supports 4.3
Videos in some games are tiny for me too, meh.
The stock video player still works of course, even for mkv files. Except no subtitles and it can't play hi10p.
Just found out I now prefer Vplayer to MX Player.
Ive always looked no further than MX cause I thought it was the best, now that Vplayer has had an update for 4.3 I tried it and like it very much. Very similar to MX but much more appealing.

Link for Catatonic VRSE Video

Could anyone post the link for the Catatonic video from VRSE? The app doesn't launch for us miserable Exynos users, and the video is still 'Coming Soon' on the Android app.
Much appreciated

I use the Oculus 360 Movie player. You need to mux the video with the audio file using YAMB then put it in that folder.

Is Oculus 360 Movie player in the store? because i cannot seem to find it
It should come pre-installed on the Gear VR, it already has a few 360 movies pre-loaded.
I´ve made a version of catatonic on youtube, that works on cardboards......if someone wants to try...... h**ps://w*w.youtube.com/watch?v=AEWxokjJt6E
Are these files, in any way, playable in VRSE for google cardboard? I had downloaded Evolution of Verse and tried modifying the json file according to the filenames. I could get the audio files running in VRSE, but video doesn't show up. There is a tag in the json file, called "video_format" which has a value "stereo_left_right" for the evolution of verse, but the catatonic is in up-down stereo format. I tried using a couple of guesses like "stereo_top_bottom" and "stereo_up_down" etc, but doesn't seem to do the trick. Anybody able to play it properly? I know muxing the audio with the video file and playing in some 360 player may work fine, but still wanted to give this a shot.
does this work on daydream?
They have changed the app name to Within instead of VRSE.
I only found this out by spending hours trying to find the Samsung MILK app via VPN changes to find none because Samdung had changed the name to Samsung VR. I haven't seen this Catatonic video but if it's the one in the mental asylum then it was on there for me.
So, this video has apparently been removed from all official sources due to "licensing issues", this is so f***ing stupid !
Can anybody post a link to the "muxed" version (video + audios) ?
I tried adding the 4 mp3 tracks with MP4Box and playing it with AAA VR Cinema, but still no "3D sound".. It's much less immersive !
Can you help me mux those files?

Catatonic is now avilable via the Dark Corner App. Dark Corner is an App that delivers horror based VR 360 videos.
