[How to] Ubuntu touch Tutorial for Windows - Nexus 7 General

As you all know Canonical just released the official Ubuntu Touch developer preview with an installation guide on linux.
Since most of you probably have windows, I thought I might help you with that.
So here is a guide to install the developer preview of Ubuntu Touch for tablets.
What you need:
A rooted nexus 7 with costum recovery
What you need to do:
Make a backup and save it on your computer. I am not responsible for data loss or bricking your device!
Go to: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/quantal/mwc-demo/ and download these 3 files:
quantal-preinstalled-boot-armel+grouper.img
quantal-preinstalled-armel+grouper.zip
quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip
Copy "quantal-preinstalled-armel+grouper.zip" and "quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip" on your nexus 7, leave quantal-preinstalled-boot-armel+grouper.img on your computer
Reboot into bootloader and connect you nexus 7 to your computer
Use your favorite Nexus 7 toolkit to flash the boot image "quantal-preinstalled-boot-armel+grouper.img" (with the "Nexus 7 ToolKit" you can use 11 to flash the image)
or
On your PC, place the quantal-preinstalled-boot-armel+grouper.img in the same directory as your fastboot.exe file.
Open up a comend promt, navigate to the directory with the fasboot.exe and type “fastboot devices” to see a list of all fastboot devices connected to you pc.
Type the following: fastboot flash boot “quantal-preinstalled-boot-armel+grouper.img” to flash the image.
Boot into recovery, wipe data and cache and flash both files
Reboot your nexus 7 and have fun
After flashing recovery still works, so you can restore you backup, if you want to.
SD card does not get wiped in the process and as far as i can tell, there should be no data loss. At least that was the case for me.
Sorry for any typos...
Credits to: Liliputing and mskip for the awesome Toolkit
I not sure anymore, if this is really the right forum. Really sorry. Please move to genereal, if necessary.

Cheers, I love my Android too much to make the switch , I would love if someone has instructions on how to use this with MultiRom !

Thanks for this guide.
Flashing took about five minutes for me.
But this can't be used as a daily driver i think.

Hi!!!
Thanks for tutorial. I installed it easier still... I put this 3 zip files into internal storage, reboot into recovery, flash first quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (biggest file). When finish, flash the other one. It finish normaly, reboot N7 and it should start into ubuntu with no problem.
Best regards.

No its not. This is Ubuntu on your tablet. I don't know why you think it's just an Android launcher skin.

A little trick & tip:
I installed ubuntu for tablet following these steps:
1. copy only quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip and quantal-preinstalled-armel+grouper.zip in /sdcard on your Nexus 7 (quantal-preinstalled-boot-armel+grouper.img no need because the boot image is inside the second zip file)
2. Enter in Recovery Mode (CWM Recovery)
3. Wipe data/factory + cache
4. Install form Recovery the zips files (1. quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip - wait 10 minute and then 2. quantal-preinstalled-armel+grouper.zip)
5. Reboot
I'm actually testing ubuntu for tablet : graphics is amazing; In any case there are many bugs and issues.

Ubuntu is its own os with cm sources, not exactly android.

The only way I was able to get back into recovery was using adb. My Nexus 7 would not boot to recovery using the power + volume down method, but "adb reboot recovery" worked and I was able to wipe and restore my TWRP backup without issue.

Where did you adb from? Was your Nexus booted to Ubuntu or the bootloader? Did you have to ADB from Linux?

Is this actually working for anybody else? No matter what I do, no matter what ROM (stock or custom), and no matter how many times I re-flash this, it boots up to what I'm assuming is the lock screen but that is all. It's not frozen because the clock still updates, but I can do absolutely nothing with this.

I am very excited about this project. I will be glad when all the bugs are worked out.:cyclops:

How long should the first boot take? Is there any boot screen?
I just have a black screen at the moment
edit: It didn't work. Fortunately, I could reach recovery from fastboot mode. I must have been a bad flash :S

[Recovery] ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.8

Well I got to compile the last non-touch recovery and finally is now possible to mount both SDcards (internal and external).
Work:
Installing from ZIP
Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Backup Nandroid
Internal and External SDCard
Untested:
Fix Permissions
Battery Stats
SDCard Partition
Download: CWM 5.2.0.8
Thanks to TheManii for the help.

What ROM did you use it with?
Could you also upload your source files? I'd like to take a look at what's changed.
I plan on working on it more mid may when my semester ends.
I'm also gonna remirror it off streakdroid.com. I assume you dont mind.

Just wondering if one could do an Android restore from files created with CWM 4.0.1.4 using say CWM 5.0.2.8?

Going to give this a try with ICS B4 and see if it can handle it.

Try this recovery for ICS maybe work. If boot work maybe in ICS the problem is recovery.fstab
The partition is different of HoneyComb?
Greetings
I just tried it on ICS B4 and get the same "Can't mount /data!" error after backing up the boot image, recovery img and system that I got with CWM 4.0.1.4.
Backup to internal card errors with "Can't mount backup path". Whoops! I didn't mount the EMMC. Probably would get the same error as with the external sd.
Recs designed for HC wont wont on ICS as ICS has different partitions.
If we ever get an ICS build that uses the same partitions then the recs for HC will also work on it
Edit: 5.0.2.8 is mirrored and linked to the wiki now

Thanks.
Any with ICS, You can enter the recovery (CWM 5.0.2.8) and go to Advanced-> Show Log
After this reboot to system. Open Root filemanager and go to cache/recovery/last_log (To read the last_log must copy it to another route) & copy the info here.
And repeat the process with Stock Recovery of ICS (Attach ICS Stock Recovery of the ICS B4 of DJ_Steve ROM).

Man, ok heres my story.
Actually iam trying to flash a recovery mode but there so many threads that i dont know wich one is better. I tried some of them but i dont know where to start. I only end up at the fastboot mode and not pass that.

and you ran "fastboot flash recovery ./recovery.img" ? And you made sure your device is in fastboot mode first?
ok this what i did, i Press VOL + AND POWER at the same time and gave me fastboot.
Then plug in the phone to the computer and the computer detects it but when i go to the computer devices it does not show anything available.
I do have the ROM MANAGER app Installed and flash the recovery mode but it does not show up when i press VOL - AND POWER, It just turns ON.
just type in "fastboot devices". if you see "? device" than you are good. If not you need to install the fastboot drivers.

[CWM] ClockworkMod 6.0.1.2 for Xperia T [UPDATED - 15/10/2012]

This is a CWM recovery for the Xperia T - you need to have unlocked your bootloader at http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BRICKING YOUR PHONE ETC. ETC. ETC. - I'm sure you've heard the rest before.
Steps for installation:
Download recovery from http://goo.im/devs/tilal6991/recoveries/mint/15102012.img
Download fastboot and get it into a place where you can run it - I'm not going to provide instructions how - guides are all over the place
Open a command window in the place where fastboot is
Copy the recovery.img to the fastboot folder
Type fastboot flash boot recovery.img
Type fastboot reboot
You will be in CWM!
Note:
The first time you install a ROM you will need to flash the boot.img of that ROM using fastboot - I'm hoping this restriction can be removed at a future date.
A CM port is also up - compiled by me.
Thanks to:
All the CM guys for having their code on Github - I didn't do anything but compile and figure out the instructions for flashing.
Hmm, so tempting but not sure since you've not tested it on the T. Someone else gonna go first?
EDIT: I am sorry, a bad assumption possibly. Have you tested this on a T?
I have. It's tested and working. I've flashed CyanogenMod and using it as a daily as well.
Will have my T today but I wonder how to access recovery in daily use? (undestood the 1st time access, but not the next accesses...)
backup and restore work?
Switch off phone.
Power on phone with volume down held.
And although I haven't tested there's nothing that indicates backup/restore won't work.
Sent from my Xperia T using Tapatalk 2
Hmm, the recovery just cycle boots into recovery mode. It never boots into system
As I said the first time you flash a ROM you will need to fast boot install the boot mage of the ROM.
Sent from my Xperia T using Tapatalk 2
So then you are forced to flash a rom after installing cwm?
Sent from my Xperia T
Yes. Since you are flashing the boot partition its a pseudo recovery so a ROM needs to be flashed.

I flashed this last night successfully. I couldn't get side-loading to work, but it's smooth otherwise. Have not tested backup / restore yet.
Additionally, FWIW, I then flashed the Paranoid Android ROM, and while I've got some issues with it, I didn't have to flash the boot.img from the ROM for the ROM to boot, so I am not sure if that is still required or not... or maybe that's what's causing my issues with the ROM?
Thanks for the recovery!

So this recovery has to be initially installed on the boot partition, but does it copy itself to the recovery partition on first boot or do you have to reflash it every time you want to switch from running a ROM to running the recovery?
Also, is a stock boot.img available anywhere (so that this recovery can be used for nandroid backups with the stock rom)?
Once I am finished with this recovery how do I turn the phone off?
SOLVED
Hold vol + and - and power button.

CWM recovery?

OK here's the deal, I have my phones boot loader unlocked and its rooted, now I want to install cwm, on all my previous devices I did this through ROM manager but atm our device is not supported there. However I saw a guy on here (can't remember his name) use a twrp recovery from the photon q on our device, can I do the same with cwm in ROM manager? Or are there compatibility issues?

They used the photon for cwm. Don't do that though. Use our official one located in the development section.

Don't give up just yet. It's worth it to get custom ROMs on your phone.
Do a search around the forums here and you'll find a custom build of a CWM based recovery by mattlgroff made for this phone. Flash that to recovery with fastboot and you should then be able to flash custom ROMs without fear of screwing up your phone.
You may also want to flash a stock firmware with RSD-Lite. (not the recovery!)
Some users have had issues with GPS not working until after you flash stock and then go to a custom ROM after getting a GPS fix on stock. I don't know if that is still necessary or not, but it's something to keep in mind.

[Q] Bootloop? & failed Cyanogen Installation

Hi, I'm using a N7000, and I think I have a bootloop, but I'm not sure. I tried to install CM9, and followed the guide there:
1. flash hardcore's ClockworkMod Recovery
2. Push CM 9 onto phone using adb
3. Boot in recovery mode
4. Wipe data/factory reset
5. install zip from sd card
6. choose zip from sd crad
7. Select CM9
Then, I see the following on the console?:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
At that point, I found that I could not boot, and if I tried, there would be a yellow triangle with a "!" in it.
What could I do to fix this problem? Thanks!
Edit: Solved by connecting microSD to computer, then transfering the ROM onto microSD, then flashing again.

Something went wrong when pushing via adb.
You probably should have just copied it over before wiping your current ROM.
Anyhow we can easily fix this...just answer my question above first and we will go from there.

What do you mean by download the cm ROM directly to the device?
Download from your phone...not to you PC, then transfer to phone.

As in using the web browser on your phone after you restore the backup.

Thanks for the replies, but then I can't get pass the Samsung screen. If I try and turn my phone on, the phone somehow turns itself off, if you know what I mean.
Also, I keep getting the no battery symbol even though my phone is fully charged, and am not quite sure what may be causing this.
Thanks again!
flash philz, hardcores doesnt recognize cm roms well to flash.

Stuck at Motorola "Dual Core" logo

So my phone is stuck on the Motorola Dual Core logo after trying to flash a 4.4 Rom. I am still able to get to get into my recovery and into fastboot. No matter what rom I try to flash it still seems to go into the boot cycle. I have tried flashing to stock firmware with no luck. Anyone know what I should do?
After trying to flash stock again it seems like it is on but the screen is pitch black. When holding down the power button it gives the the vibrations after a little bit. Really not sure what this means. When plugging the device into the computer when the screen is black windows does recognize that there is a device and plays the noise but it does not show up in the devices list.

Is your bootloader unlocked?
What recovery are you using?
What ROM did you try to flash?
How did you flash it?
How are you trying to flash back to stock?

Alright, try flashing back to stock manually. Unzip the .zip, open the .xml in notepad(++) and on every line you'll see something along the lines of operation, partition, img. Open a command prompt in the location of the folder that contains the .xml (not the .zip, shift-click on white space in the folder and click open command prompt window here) and flash each line by typing
Code:
fastboot operation partition img
so each should look something like
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Just don't do the one that says "GPT_MAIN1.img" or something of the sort (should be one of the first ones). Also type
Code:
fastboot -w
before you start.
same problem...
Hi all,
I have the same problem... I cannot flash CM 11.0 builds. In the first boot it works, but if you reboot, it will get stuck in Motorola's logo.
I also tried to restore original images (using sbf dot droid-developers dot org / phone.php?device=7 AT&T 4.1.1 image), but with no success.
CM 10.1 build works fine, so that's odd.
My fastboot bootloader says:
"
AP Fastbot Flash Mode (NS)
10.9B(*) (sha-2e68372 2012-11-17 23:33:08)
eMMC Info: Size 8GB
Device is UNLOCKED, Status Code: 1
...
"
Is your bootloader unlocked?
Yes
What recovery are you using?
Tried CWM 6.0.38 and Philz latest.
What ROM did you try to flash?
CM 11.1 nightly (cm-11-20131217-NIGHTLY-mb886.zip)
How did you flash it?
Wiped everything and then flashed
How are you trying to flash back to stock?
Using RSD Lite.
Thanks very much!
Did you try updating to Phiz latest here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552622
It is my understanding that the latest CWM is required to flash 4.4 and higher roms.

Yes, I downloaded it last night... Is it better to use Philz or pure CWM?
My atrix HD broke however when it was working I was able to get cm11 on it by flashing using this recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2421418
When flashing cyanogen mod, wipe EVERYTHING basically /system /cache dalvik and then storage as well, this prevents the emulated/0/0/0/0/0 directory type of thing from happening, then after flashing factory reset clear cache and wipe dalvik then start up the phone. This has always worked for me and makes a squeaky clean install

I currently use Touch CWM which Philz is based upon. From my experience, the latest release for both will do the job.
