So with the kernel released, anyone want to educate us how to flash a kernel? Id like to dig into this kernel, and if I can do anything with it, id like to know how to flash it to test...
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA Premium App
it should be the same as on any other phone. boot into ClockWork Recovery and select "install .zip from sd card"(or you could specify in ROM Manager that you want to do that also.
No, its not the same as any other phone...you can't install a custom kernel on the Bionic because it can only run a signed boot image...ala the locked bootloader.
The release of the kernel source, while welcome, is not anything that end users can do anything with at all and is of limited use to developers as well, due to the fact that Moto doesn't release everything and custom kernels are not possible.

Well, you're wrong.
It the phone was unlocked, that is where you'd flash the kernel - through recovery.
well, the procedure of installing a kernal is the same as a ROM(meaning you don't have to go through BootLoader)... so as far as installing, the above is how you'd do it... but wether or not(not) your phone accepts it is a different story considering the current status of the Bionic.
Hmm, wonder if any one is willing to try... If u have then knowledge to put that in a flashsble zip, il try... what's the worst that could happen.... Have soft brick and rds back to life....???

Jeez. The kernel source was barely released a day or two ago. Give the dev community a few days to sort out what they can do with it before getting all crazy about it. We already have ClockworkMod Recovery for the Bionic. Chances are, since they have the full source code, we'll have refined flashable kernels that are bootloader-compliant in the coming weeks.

I am hoping this is the case as well.
Not sure if the entire source was released or just what was contractually obligated to under the GPL.(which is likely the case since everything would give the dev's the key to the kingdom so to speak.)

Well...since we are being sticklers for the facts here...the easiest and most efficient way to load a custom kernel, if we could do so, would be fastboot.
They are typically released for most devices with unlocked bootloaders in update.zip format, but it's really device dependent and several forms are often available.

no, you can use it with both locked and unlocked bootloader, unlocked bootloaders cannot have more than one partition as of now for our device, but safestap can have upto 3 partitions, that means you can have 3 roms at the same time with boot selection option,, i have tried having cm,pac and aokp at the same time a month ago and i worked well..

but, if you have your bootloader unlocked there is no possiblity for soft brick and these kind of things cannot cause hardbrick... if you mess up with something you can fastboot it to stock easily and install cwm or twrp.. it is soo simple, noobs get bricked because they have a locked bootloader yet, they try these things.. before you start with something related to modification, it is highly recomended to unlock your bootloaderand it is safe after unlocking..
Safestrap is just a workaround to let us play with our phones. A poor workaround at that. Noone here recommends running safestrap on top of an unlocked boot loader as well.
If people want "slots" make a cwm backup of your ROM. Flash a new ROM. Back a backup. Switching between the two is simple.

SS will work, but it has safeties in place that make some of its functions do what we don't need them to do now that we're unlocked. Format commands are really wipes, can't flash boot or recovery with it (by default), etc. If SS was recoded to be installed to the recovery partition and the safeties removed then it would be TWRP with MultiRom, but the safeties in place makes it a bit of a nuisance with custom roms, kernels, and unlocked devices.
I agree but because it's sticked in the development section all the noobs use it and end up breaking something.

Hey guys I was chatting with arrrghhh and he told me that he can try whipping TWRP for us if we want it. He even thought we had it since long time. Lol
I will be one for sure to have this recovery even though cwm touch is working great for me. But more options the better for our devices.

That's exciting news ... I use TWRP 2.6 on a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and on my Kindle and it is great. I've always wished to have it for my phone, plus it's reminiscent of those old SafeStrap days.
I'm dreadfully ignorant here...
What exactly is the difference between TWRP and CWM/CWM-Based Recoveries?
ATM this doesn't seem too exciting... (Of course I haven't used TWRP before so that doesn't really help either...)
It have more many options to mess with. But so after testing the first attempt we still have the same offset problems. So this is a work in progress

So it supports multi-ROM or does it not have that functionality from SS3?
No, for my understanding multirom is a modified TWRP or TWRP with the multirom hack. Yes is run through TWRP but we also need the hack to be active on it for it to work. In other words that is a different project
Sent from my Atrix HD using Pacman rom and XDA 4 Premium
For the ones that don't know, think of TWRP like CWM Touch only with more options and things to do. It has features like a file manager, multi-zip flashing, more ways to manipulate the sd card (partition, file system, etc), custom themes, and more.
this is awesome

Then just don't flash the security component. Just do System and I think boot? I'd have to check mine, but I went from 4.4.2 to 4.1.2 and back to 4.4.2 again. It can be done if you are careful

The XT907 is surprisingly capable for its age.
Hoping that Verizon launches an LTE variant of the Moto G. It's a worthy successor to the RAZR M.

I haven't seen anything like that in 4.4. I had to decompile the frameworkres.apk and systemui.apk and change the colours that way but if you are doing that you may as well load cromi-x. So no way to change them unless you can find an app for root that works with the asus framework which I doubt.
