[Q] Multitasking.- fixed or not? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love the look of this phone, and I was insanely happy with my One X but I had to make the jump to the S3 (and later the Note 2) because of the multitasking woes that plagued the phone. No matter how I phrase an internet search I can't hear any preview that addresses the issue that many review sites completely ignored the last time around.
So the bottom line question is this: Will the M7 have standard multitasking? (I.e. the phone does NOT refresh applications/web pages/etc in an effort to conserve battery life).

+1 this was my biggest gripe with the hox....I switched to the gs3 as well but looking to possibility move back to htc if this has been fixed

Indeed. HTC has fantastic build quality (I'd easily put the one X with any iPhone). If it had multitasking I'd put up with a non removable battery. Especially since I tend to watch a lot of Netflix lately while waiting for classes and I love the idea of the speaker placements on the m7.
And the one X still had the best camera I'd ever had on a smartphone)

Sorry guys can you clarify about the multitasking issue on the HTC One X? I had an Nexus phone a few years back and thought all Android phones fully multitasked out the box so to speak.

Android has multi tasking but i heard htc one x broke that. When you switch to another app and comeback using recent apps that app would need to be reopened which means it gets terminated even if you dont kill it

It has been fixed on the One according to all the videos I've seen

The HTC One X had the worst multi tasking of any phone. You could literally go between just two apps and they apps would have to completely reload. They would not even be in a save state. For instance, i would be surfing the internet, go text real quick and come back, only to find my internet had to reload the whole page I was just on 30 seconds ago. It was horrible. It ruined the phone for a lot of people. And forget about trying to switch between any more apps lol. I'm not sure if HTC even acknowledged it, or I believe they said "that is just how it works". If I had known it was that bad, I would have got the s3 over it. But I bought one of the first ones so woe is me.

I found a German video right here where you can see it.
At 2:32 you can see it.
This video is short but quite informing also if you dont understand german.

sorry but i don't see anything in that video that shows that the HTC one has true multi tasking?
i hope all the people who have played with the demo units can let us know.

It seems pretty clear to me from that video that it does.

Just to clarify:
People aren't asking if the HTC One can multitask, it is obvious that it can.
We are asking:
How is the memory management on the phone? Does it unload app quickly, like the HTC One X? Or does it save them in memory.
With the HTC One X, if u opened a webpage, then went to the home scream, once u returned to the webpage it would reload instead of staying in memory.
We want to know if basicly this behaviour is still present? Or if it stays in memory.

Hello! I'm not sure about this problem but do you have a HTC One X? If so did you guys ever check the defined values of it's OOM settings already? Since that's the one that handles the killing of background apps etc.

this issue with the multi tasking we're referring to was the modification made by HTC in Sense. see here:

It all depends on your minfree values. With minfree values you/HTC can set the phone to close apps at certain memory values, to have a certain memory free when you are using apps.
Higher minfrees= more apps closed= more ram available to the few opened apps
Lower minfrees=more apps opened= less ram available to the many open apps.
All this can be changed once you root the phone so I wouldn't worry what it comes with. The beauty of Android is that EVERYTHING basically can be changed. That is if you root it There are about 1000000000 ways to do it

HOX Multitasking
Yes this was the initial behaviour of the HOX but since updating to Jelly Bean i have not noticed this anymore.

Facebook is horrible on JB/N7...missing features?

Good afternoon XDA!
Having received my N7 yesterday, I didn't get to play with it too much until later on at night. One of the first things I noticed was that the Facebook app on the device is missing many of the main features. I'm not sure if it's a JellyBean issue (as my Galaxy Nexus is CDMA and I haven't modded it to JB yet) or a N7 issue, but there's no way to see someone's Pictures, Info, or Favorites. What I mean is that if you go to someone's profile the only thing visible is their Wall. There's no way to go into the other sections of someone's profile. The only way to see their pictures is if they post them on their walls.
Anyone else notice this? For those that have, if you also have JellyBean on another device does it do it there, as well? I just have no way of knowing if this is a JB issue or a device-specific issue. I can't seem to find any other complaints, which I'm a bit confused by...I understand that this device is extremely new, but a *vast* majority of Android users also spend quite a bit of time on Facebook, so I'd be surprised if nobody had run into this issue before me (or at least made comments on it).
Post thoughts and maybe we can narrow it down!
I'm seeing the same issue. I've heard good things about Friendcaster as a superior replacement so I'd try that.
Friendcaster is a good alternative and in many ways superior to the Facebook app - you can have multiple log ins/accounts and much more responsive than facebook

I have both the Galaxy Nexus on JB and the N7, I can definitely confirm that the FB app is lacking on the N7 especially when going into peoples profiles. However on the Galaxy Nexus it has every single feature that it had on GB and ICS. No idea what the deal is with the N7 version of the app.
Facebook app isn't set up for tablets on JB as far as I'm aware. Give them a bit to update the app and we will see.
No your wrong, its not the fact its a tablet on jelly bean, its the fact its a tablet.

Questions about the N7

Not sure if this is the correct area but I have a few questions:
How well does the tablet preform?
How do you guys find it?
Is it good for gaming?
How's the battery life of the device?
Is it worth the amount of money people are selling it at?
What do you recommend the 8 GB or 16 GB
Might have a few more but that's all for now, hope you guys can help me out!
Thanks.
1. Fantastically, I haven't noticed any lag, no unresponsiveness at all
2. It's a great device and is built sturdily, the only problem I have with it is that the keyboard is just little too wide to type while holding it, it's possible but mistakes are common
3. Excellent, I've been playing Shadowgun, Need For Speed, Angry Birds, Cogs and World of Goo on it and it's been performing really well, no lag at all and the screen size is just right, and it even keeps the games in memory after opening lots of other apps and it responds really well.
4. Great, got about 7 hours out of it while gaming solidly with screen on auto brightness, when on apps other than games it lasts about 8 hours and a half
5. Yes, considering it does everything rather well, I thought reading would be difficult but it's not
6. If you download a lot of the "bigger" games from the Play Store, then go for the 16GB, if not, everything is cloud based so just go for the 8GB, unless you want to store stuff for offline use

Thank you so much for your informative feed back, could I install a 32 GB MicroSD card? If so that would be cheaper, since it's quiet a lot for a 16 GB Version and its only double the capacity!
Sorry for double comments, but does the launcher do landscape? I saw somewhere it don't do that, or maybe there's a setting for that?

There are two hacks to get this fixed. One is build. prop edit. the other i think is a framework xml edit (dont quite me on the second) Its a assumption but im sure its framework related. I do not have my tablet yet :crying:
This will most likely require you to Root your tablet.
Awe why don't they just add a setting like most launchers ;(

I'm sure you know it does landscape except when on the launcher screens, but mine didn't have "auto rotation " enabled out of the box. If anyone isn't getting landscape when browsing the web, etc., check your settings.
BTW, I just use Apex Launcher and now have landscape on the homescreen too.

The mobile network unlock is called SIM unlocking, which allows you to switch to other networks. Bootloader unlocking, the most commonly talked about here on XDA, means modifying your device to allow custom versions of Android.
Probably means the second one then, so that's equivalent to rooted? or not?
Another thing is, the USB port on the device, can that be used for any keyboard? maybe also a usb hub, so i can connect a mouse to it also?

Keyboard/mouse: yes. USB host capability (for expanding the storage of the device via flash drive): only when rooted so far. An update might fix it if enough people complain, but for now, you have to root it and get stickmount (or a similar app).
And shouldn't this thread really be in Q and A?

HTC Raider ics update

Hello, I'm coming from my One XL and wondering about my bf's HTC Raider's very recent stock pushed update to ICS 4.0.3 and sense 3.6... I'm noticing HTC did the same thing with the raiders' update that they did with the One XL and horribly broke multitasking... My bf is pretty choked about it, and I'm disappointed in HTC's move to do this. I was planning to downgrade his phone back to stock gingerbread with sense 3.(1?) but wanted this community's feedback, perhaps recommend a Rom with ics and non broken multitasking?
After a quick glance, I can't see much reference to this problem for you guys.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
What do you mean, broke multitasking?
Specifically - whats broken about it?
Say, he opens a web browser, then switches to music player, then back to web browser, just as one example of many... The web browser will reload the web page because the application was actually shut down when another process was initiated. The same thing with Facebook and many other apps. This is an issue very similar with the HTC One X out-of-the-box; HTC has "decided for us" that we don't need more than "X amount of processes" running simultaneously. With this said, the Raider handled multitasking extremely well pre-update with no problems at all; he could switch between chrome, trillian, music, the camera, and multitudes of other apps without any app ever needing to reflow.
I don't understand HTC's desire to cripple their phones as of late... The Raider worked beautifully and I'm disappointed to see HTC take this rout. The One X would work beautifully if HTC just screwed off with this vicious multitasking policy.
Edit: I'd also like to report that this update has also suddenly caused his phone to start overheating, too... Damn near burned my hand just holding the raider.

Apps usually get killed when the system needs to free up RAM, right? Could an app be eating up all your free RAM? Run SystemPanel Lite (free in the play store) to check out your CPU usage (re: the heat?) and your free RAM (re: apps being closed?)
Re: Going back to GingerBread. I don't know if the stock Gingerbread RUU rom will allow it to flash now that you are on the ICS update. I tried that once. It threw an error (complaning that the HBOOT fw version was not what it expected). I like ICS. Running a custom rom (Holics 1.2).

Applications are also killed (as of the Raider update, and stock for One X) after X Amount of processes are opened... Which is horrible because that even seems to include background processes... At least I think so. I'm surprised to see lots of ICS custom roms for the Raider and no reference to these issues, or any mention of this update. :/ But its definitely the update that's screwing my bf's phone.

Hypothetically, could I not flash a custom gingerbread Rom with cwm/twrp or would that cause issues? I'll see if he has any issues with a custom ICS Rom first, since this push update is so new maybe you guys haven't had a chance to mess with it yet... but IF it was necessary, wouldn't that work?

Under development options theres something like Background Process limit...I found it plunking around with my HTC phone. Try that maybe? Google what it does, but im pretty sure it will kill your last process if you set it to no background processes.

Multitasking

Do we know yet if htc has fixed the multitasking in the one. I had an x and x+ and the thing could not have more than a couple apps open at one time. It was quite annoying going into your mail app from the browser and having your browser reload when you go back into it. This drove me nuts.
If htc fixed that on the one I will be first in line to get one. If not then i will take a pass.
I read some article (hands-on) and it said multitasking is great, the phone just flew between apps
This is one thing I am looking for as well. I can't stand the multi tasking on my one x. It is completely useless. Couldn't even switch between two apps without having to reload them. I had also heard in one of the hands on videos I believe that they said the multi tasking had been fixed as well. But I'm still waiting for a thorough review.

i read that it is limited to the last 9 apps you have used (which is more than enough i think)
so hopefully that means they have sorted it but could only get the last 9 working.
I'm fine with the last 9 working, as long as they are truly staying in some sort of saved state and pull back up to where you were at without reloading I'll be ecstatic.

The problem is if those 9 apps are actually held in RAM or not. The HOX showed plenty of apps in the recent app list, it's just that they had all been killed already so it re-loaded from scratch.
Hopefully HTC have learnt, and if not then 2Gb RAM should make a difference too

very nice

Seems to work flawlessly none of the nine apps refresh

1g shall work fine for multitask, but one x has special handling to deal with multitask that cause it a problem. It killed app when memory still very much.
So we need ONE user to give their feedback on how good it is now.
Can someone with the One make a video and post it up please.
Go to Youtube Desktop version, play the video to 1 min in, Press home, go into email app, Press home then go to task Switcher app, Click on Youtube and see if the video is still at 1 min mark or it refreshed.
Its a deal-breaker for me

This would be interesting to know... Its not a deal breaker for me as memory management is fairly easy to modify with root. But it will still be annoying.
Root never fixed it on the one x for me despite tweaking

[Q] Multitasking?

I'm an EVO 4G LTE user and am well aware of the multitasking use on Sense 4+ but what I want to know is if the HTC One, with Sense 5, able to do REAL multitasking? For example: playing a video on YouTube (app and/or browser) while browsing the homescreen or appdrawer instead of hitting the home button or doing something else and the video stopping.

No, that feature isn't available but coming from someone who had the evo LTE the recents apps is way better than the 2 cards than are displayed on the evo. The only phone i know that has that feature is multi window option in the galaxy phones. But i like in sense 5 how if you press the recent apps you see 9 apps and the applications don't reset which means you pick up right where you left off in every app.

Well that just blows. I've been waiting for a feature like that but really would hate to get on a Samsung phone again. I do like the way the multitasking is used on the One BUT it would be nice to have 2 apps running at the same time. Thanks for the quick response.

The applications will reset based on available RAM.
Luckily, with 2GB, that's relatively rare.
Isn't it specifically in the youtube app to stop playing if you aren't on the app. I don't believe a samsung will get around this any differently.
As far as the multi-tasking, its nothing like the evo lte.
The youtbe app is designed to pause when it isn't on the foreground....its assumed you want to watch the video.

Without the two apps at once feature, yes.

That's what I'm speaking of guys/gals and was asking if the HTC One/Sense 5 had a like feature that would give the same result.

Not sure what else there is, but that's all I could find on Google that seemed pretty good. They're the closest thing to Samsung's Pop up Play that I could find.
If you just want the ability to watch a YouTube video while tinkering around in your phone Floating YouTube Player is perfect.

I could have sworn I read an article on Engadget a week or two ago about an app that does the multi Window thing.

There's a similar feature on AOSP called multi-VIEW...you might wanna check it out, but I'm not even sure if it's implemented in any of the roms made so far
Best of both worlds woot woot (sorry, couldn't resist)
You could by a floating browser app that will let you surf the web while doing anything else.
