Customs fees on UK imports? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
From the brave ones importing the phone into Canada or US:
Did you have to pay any customs/broker taxes? Where did you buy from and what shipping method?
Thanks!

Hmm,
Don't believe in under certain value.
How it usually works, customs fees depend largely on country of manufacture.
That said, I was charged brokerage fees for a 10$ item bought from hk I guess, thru ebay..
Sent from a galaxy far away..

I usually buy stuff from eBay, they are from varies location like hk, Japan... Etc and I always got charged with customs fee or import tax especially using courier service like FedEx or ups. The amount of the tax is charged by the percentage of the claimed value of your order I think, base on my previous experience I am expecting FedEx to charge me 40CAD for this 800bucks phone

I didn't have to pay any duties or fees when i got my Note 2 from handtec UK last year. I live in Los Angeles and it was delivered by FedEx

How does this happen ?

The Nexus S is $529 in the USA, sim free and unlocked .. then it makes its way to the UK and Carphone Warehouse think that a price tag of £549 is appropriate? $529 equates to approximately £330. Does this come across as reasonable and fair behaviour ? Do Google/Carphone Warehouse think people in the UK are (1) stupid, (2) unable to do simple sums and (3) stupid ? Unbelivable!
How indeed can this happen? Rip-off Britain again I'm afraid. My nexus 1 came direct from Google in the USA, but the problem importing a nexus s is +20% vat - unless you're going to visit the USA yourself.
I managed to import a car dock via a 3rd party seller, and didn't pay the vat.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Plus insured courier of course, vat and courier would set you back about £100.
How would you then go about taking your phone back in case of any warranty issues? We're fairly scuppered which ever way you look at it.
...apart from our super n1's!

Us americans are poor. Thus lower prices on goods.

Nexus 7 available to uk

I ordered a 16gb nexus 7 on the Play Store a couple of weeks ago. Then found them for sale in currys last week, so bought one. It is an awesome and extremely addictive device!
I cancelled the Play Store order but they still shipped it!
So now I have a spare sealed one. If anybody wants it at cost price plus postage, then drop me a private message.

They will deduct 15%!!!!!!!! And also not refund the shipping!
You are covered under distance selling regulations, you do not have to pay restocking fee, it should say not applicable to EU and Australia, not sure about delivery, check t and c
Easiest way is to refuse delivery, that is what Google recommends

Yes, distance selling regulations give you too weeks to return no questions asked as long as the box is unopened. You may have to swallow the shipping charge but its better than selling it.
to clarify DSR
You have 7 working days from contract (receipt of.goods) to notify cancellation in form of durable medium, eg email not phone call.
You then have to return goods within a reasonable time period.
You do not have to pay cost for returning items if it is not explicitly written in contact.
You do not have to pay any other fee such as admin or restocking fee.
This is only DSR, returning because you didn't like it when opened doesn't count, in this case follows company returns policy.

All you have to do is, register your brand new spanking Note 2 or any Samsung device they send you coupon through email.
I did mine through

I am not sure about the shipping cost because I don't know how big/heavy the Zero Lemon will be. But I am willing to pay the shipping. We can do it without going through eBay, just paypal. I'll pay you paypal fee too plus time and effort.
PS.
Are there any other Australians here? Maybe we can bulk buy and divide the shipping cost.

OK, we have 5 orders now. That is enough for the now, don't want to put too many as it would be too risky.
I want to make this as easy as possible for the American XDA member who will be kind enough to help us by sorting out as much as possible the financial and shipping business within Australia.
So here is what I think we should do.
at the moment $1AUD = 1.03 USD, so lets assume it is equal to make it everything easy.
Step 1. Have all the Australians buyers deposit money (bank transfer) payment which include Zero Lemon plus the shipping cost from the States and monetary incentive for the American XDA member to me. Those who live outside Sydney should pay additional $8AUD so that I can post the battery to you after it arrives from the States, otherwise you can pick it up from my Parramatta residence if you live close by.
Step 2. I will then transfer the total amount to the American XDA member.
Step 3. the American XDA member will order the batteries off Amazon and ship the batteries to my address in Sydney.
Step 4. I will then post out the batteries for the rest of the Aussies that live in other Australian citise or a organise local pick after I receive them.
So this way, the American XDA only have to deal with one person and one payment, which is me and I will deal with the fellow Aussies.
So all we need now is that American XDA member volunteer, I personally prefer a MOD or a Dev member or established XDA member, because the amount of money that will be involved, Thanks.
Im in canada and use comgateway.com its pricey for one person but if theres a few being ordered should be ok. Plus theyll give you a quote up front now
Sent from my SGH-T889V using xda premium
One thing y'all should be aware of is that UPS, Fedex and such have regulations against shipping batteries. You need a bunch of paperwork including MSDS from the manufacturer. I couldn't ship a HD2 battery to my dad in another country because of all the paperwork I would have had to go through. It's much easier for the manufacturer to do it because they already have the paperwork on file.
Now, I'm sure you'd be fine just mailing it and not telling them it's a cell phone battery since people get on planes with cell phones everyday. But they could easily seize it and penalize you if they wanted if they found out.

on Amazon, why don't zero lemon just use Amazon shipping if they don't want to ship it to Australia. I bought few things off Amazon, they ship to Australia with no issue.
How about shipito.com? I have an account and willing to order.
Do we get a colour choice if we can pull this off? I'm a old Henry Ford man, "u can have any colour, as long as it's black"

I have simply ordered it via http://getpebble.com in the USA and they ship from Singeapore
After 2 weeks i got a message that it was delivered in the Netherlands. Now i'm waiting for the Customs and delivery.
So this should work for you too.

If there was an European selling point, it would charge you the VAT anyway. So just order on getpebble.com and pay 150 dollars and your VAT and handling fee, or don't order a Pebble if you feel those taxes and fees are too much.
Verstuurd vanaf mijn Xperia Z
I live in Slovakia. Ordered from getpebble.com. It costed exactly 109 EUR (150 USD) including shipping. Watch arrived from Singapore in 5 days.
Package was not intercepted by customs office.
The official site won't overcharge you. Only thing you will be missing is the standard EU warranty.
You have to pay VAT in Romania. Might be different in every country.

You have to pay customs in the UK too, but somehkw I received it yesterday without the added custom charges.
So it only cost like 90 quid. I consider myself very lucky.
I got two of them for $150. They replaced first one because of screen glitches and didn't ask to send broken one back.

To be honest it is better than I expected, and was easier to setup the way I want than I thought.
Go for it
Anyone from Poland got it from getpebble.com? What range of VAT/customs can I expect? I've seen some very inconsistent comments on some polish forums. Some paid none (not even VAT!), some paid VAT and customs.
Also - how it looks like when it gets broken? Do i need to send it back at my own expense? I admit this is what is holding me right now for buying Pebble, and i strongly consider Sony SW2 instead (as i have it in my local brick'n'mortar shops, so if it gets broken i can easily put it back).

The problem is not VAT but the delivery company charging cost

My experience buying out of the UE (from Spain) is that the delivery company charges a lot more than taxes. For example, for a tablet delivered from China, I paid: 190€ for the tablet + 10€ for delivery + 38€VAT + 90€ for administrative costs. A similar thing had happened years before with some books from amazon.com.
I never expected to pay so much but the trick is that they already have your product hijacked, you have paid for it and you can not complaint to the provider because he have already said you have to pay taxes... I have promised myself never to buy anything from outside EU again.
Ordered yesterday from Italy with free shipping ... I will see what happens and I'll report back ... in my previously experiences in buying from outside EU I've been lucky ... I never paid for VAT or customs ... finger crossed!
