[Q] Updating Overcome 2.3.3 - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was given an Asian verion that was puchased in India about 2 years ago. It is a GT-P1000. I think it is an unlocked version, meaning it was not tied to any service provider but it did not come with the SIM card. We stuck an AT&T sim card in and it worked great. So right now it is a WiFi setup here in the U.S.
I rooted it and loaded Overcome 2.3.3 a year and a half ago. Then I let my kids use it and I forgot about it. I just got it back and wanted to update it to JB but I can't for the life of me remember how I originally installed Overcome. I have a number of HTC phones that I have rooted and installed custom ROMs but this seems to be different.
I have searched but can't seem to find a simple way to do this. Does one exist?
Thanks

Just boot to cwm recovery and flash any custom ROM. Can be overcome series 7 v4.1 ( follow my signature) or cm9, cm10, AOKP, or anything that comes in zip.
Do a wipe cache, wipe data and wipe dalvik-cache.

Thanks,
For some reason i was thinking i could not flash directly to a new version, that i had to do incremental installs.
Which download do i need. I see many of the zip dowmloads come with extra utilities i dont think i need.
Thanks

Should be just the Overcome 4.1 ROM zip itself.
Since you are coming from 2.3.3, you should do the wipes.
I usually do it before and after the flashing of the ROM.
But you can choose not to wipe and see how it goes.
I still recommend downloading the nowipe version.
The reason is, you can always manually wipe it, and keep the nowipe just in case you need to roll back.
Consider this scenario: you install Overcome 4.1, and applied a mod or a patch or whatever and didn't like it and need to revert without reinstalling everything.
If you have the nowipe version, just apply it, and all will be back to Overcome standard, with data intact.
So it is useful to have the nowipe version handy, and if wipe is needed, just manually wipe from CWM.

Do you know of a JB version?

Sure. CM10 and AOKP SGT7 JB.
Both are in development subforum.
They are not Samsung ROM. all open source based.

Questions about installing ROMs and reverting to stock

I've recently rooted/installed CWM on my Sprint SGT, and I'd like to try out spacemoose's HC build. I've never flashed custom ROMs before, so I've been reading around to try and make sure I understand everything and I don't render my SGT useless.
Will I just download the ROM through her thread and choose "Install .zip from sdcard" in CWM recovery?
Assuming that's correct and that all goes well, how would I revert to stock? Would I do it via a similar process with a stock .zip file? If so, where can I get this file?
Also, it appears that there are only a couple CDMA ROMs out there. It seems that GSM users can use a ROM regardless of TMO/ATT affiliation. Is that the case with CDMA?
Thanks for the help!
The HC of spacemoose is still in the early stages of development-even alpha stage. Definitely not for beginners to try out.

It seems there are two CDMA Roms available. Can to recommend one to get familiar with the process?

I think you are on gingerbread 2.3.3 firmware. NO YOU CANNOT USE recovery to install/flash a new version of the firmware as HC is android 3.0. The install from zip is only used for the same firmware version.

I'm on Froyo 2.2
I installed SpaceMoose's Alpha 2 and then upgraded to Alpha 2.5. If you install a launcher (ADW or VTL) it greatly improves the usability of the Tab.
I will say this, if you need to use it for work or as your only device then I would hold off. I am extremely happy with Alpha 2.5, but there are a few quirks.
Data (3G) does not work yet
Occasionally it will freeze up and require a reboot
Some apps aren't playing nice (personally I haven't been able to get Google Music to sync)
With that said, if you still want to go do it, then here is how I did it on my Verizon Tab (should be similar since they are both CDMA)
Starting from stock, unrooted:
Installed the over the air update EC02 (or you can download it on XDA)
Rooted using SuperOneClickRoot
Installed the VooDoo kernel to get CWM 2.5 (apparently CWM 3.0 has some issues)
Put SpaceMoose's ZIP file on my SD Card
Booted into CWM
Install Zip from SD Card
Choose ZIP
Install
VIOLA!
Not sure on the process to get Sprint Tab back to stock. I used Heimdall and the instructions found on XDA and DroidForums. I did see this thread for Sprint (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009926).
Hope that helps.

Wont boot but got download

Hi excuse my ignorance im a dhd user slightly different.
I rooted my wifes phone, clockwork was okay but would only boot cm7..would not allow gapps.
So i reverted to taking it back to froyo. Then i wanted ics on it,so flashed that,i kept her data so tried resoring that.
Now it just hangs at galaxy s screen
I cant enter into clockwork at all. It does enter download thankgod.
Thing is taking it back to froyo takes a while! Is there any way to take her straight to ics or cyn 7 or different rom without doing froyo.
The kernels for this phone are slighty different from mine the way they work..so how do i get the exact kernel and rom running again,
Also lol her data is on a back up i did will tgat still be there? Rom manager must save it somewhere?
ill be honest i have no idea anymore when coming to the galaxy s,im fairly confident with my dhd,but this has got me stumped
plus ill be a goner if i cant get it restored lol
Sorry for the looooong question

T hink your problem is that you tried to install ICS on Froyo Base. SInce Gingerbread there is a new bootloader. If you want to install ICS or any Gingerbread-based ROM, you have to install a JVH base ROM (with bootloader), for example Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000_ODIN, first. This will update the bootloader and you may flash any newer rom via CWM.
If you have an boot-loop now, you may try flashing Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000_ODIN via ODIN, its a very basic ROM (see this thread).
Thanks for your help, its up and running again

[Q] GT-P1000 Confusion about how to install Andriod

Hi, I would love to update my GT-p1000 to ICS, I have found a whole bunch of posts about how to do this, but I can't really sort out what posts are the correct ones or where to start.
I have not updated with a custom image before so it's "clean"
I have rooted the device though, but that is about it.
Can someone guide me step by step on how to install a ICS image on this device?

Hi too. Your post confuses me. I thougt almost all ICS update Q&A threads are similar and therefore correct too.
It would start by tell you there are several ICS ROMs available.. CM9, and Stimpz0r's AOKP, being the main choices.
Continuing to ask you to follow the team overcome website instructions to restock (i.e. install GB-Stock-Safe) with team overcome kernel ONLY(no need to install overcome rom)
Next would be downloading the respective .zip file from their threads, and usually ends by asking you to follow each respective install instructions on their first posts. Currently AOKP and CM9 follows a very similar install procedures.
So, all these posts similar to tbe above are all correct.
But since you are on stock and rooted, AND if you are on Gingerbread 2.3.3 or up, with JPZ modem, you can skip the restocking procedure and directly install Overcom KERNEL before flashing ICS .zip file.

Do you mean
How do you put ICS into your Tab ?
First upgrade to 2.3.3 Then install cwm by using chainfire's pda and flashing it through odin 3 v1.7
http://www.4shared.com/zip/g-uW6vGt/CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v33-CW.html
then you have to flash overcome nowipe from team overcome's site.
after that you can follow any post incluzing stimpz0r's aokp or cdesai's cyanogenmods
What about for 2.3.3 unrooted set up if would like to had an ics? Also the same cm9?
Thanks

Same procedure.
Install CWM by flashing a kernel that has CWM built in , like Overcome 4.0 kernel.
The exact step you can follow overcome guide.
Then boot into cwm and flash ics and gapps.

One question from me (it's about ICS and soft modification so I allowed myself to put it here)
If I installed e.g. AOKP build 37 and I want to update it to build 38, do I need to use Recovery to install new rom only? Will it wipe my data (so I need to back it up using Titanium etc.?) or should I clean it myself? What about dalvik?
Thanks for answers!
It is OK to wipe cache and dalvik cache (some recovery just lump it as wipe cache)
I update from AOKP #37 to #38 without issue, everything intact.
Remember to flash gapps again.
But there has been at least two cases if seasoned users who got stuck upgrading and had to restock.
Just in case, copy everything from internal SD to external SD or to PC, since restock with pit file will reformat internal SD.
Edit: recovery is for flashing anything and wiping, not just for flashing new rom.
Of course it only flash zip that is packaged for flashing.

[Q] Upgrade confusion - Froyo to ICS

Hello guys,
I'm currently on:
Froyo 2.2
Kernel 2.6.32.9
[email protected] #91
FROYO.JPJPG
I want to upgrade to RemICS v1.3 (ICS 4.0.4), and my phone is already rooted, so my questions are:
A. Do I need to upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.3 first?
B. Do I need to use ODIN in order to upgrade the Kernel to ICS as well as the ROM.
C. I've almost consumed most of my internal SD memory, so if I do a Nandroid Backup; where would it be stored? and would it include the apps as well as the data, or just the basic data without the apps?
I'm leaning more towards using ODIN than to put the ROM on my SD card, so that if something goes wrong I can flash it directly from there again.
I appreciate your help.

First flash GB rom (best to do via odin). Kernels are usually included within rom so you don`t have to worry about that.Nandroid will be stored on sd but you can move it to your external sd or computer. If you`ll need it later for restoring you`ll simply put it back on int sd. Nandroid does complete picture of your phone, so everything will be backed up. BUT! You can not use nand restore done in GB directly from ICS. You`ll have to go back to GB rom before preforming it.
1. Yes. You need the gingerbread boot loaders.
2. Also yes. You will need Odin a second time to flash an ics kernel with cwm in order to flash the pics zip.
3. A nandroid does everything. Literally. Do one of them, go to another rom, when you come back its exactly as before. Down to the wallpaper and homescreen layout and wether Wi-Fi was on/off for example.

You don't actually need gb bootloader to go to ics, but I recommend it as if anything goes wrong it means as easy reflash to gb , rather than going back to froyo, gb bootloader are needed to get onto cm7, which is where the confusion lies
I made the leap to GB 2.3.6 using Odin. Amazing difference from that stupid Froyo. I'm enjoying GB right now until I find a solid stable ICS.
Thank you guys for the info.

If you want stable ICS I recommend ics333 extreme. Worked flawlessly on my good ol` s1. Since I bought s3 don`t know really how is with development on that rom but you can check it out on forum. Many different roms and ppl with different taste out there. Almost everyone has his favorite. This one worked really good for me.

Putting ICS on My N7000

I just purchased a international Note off EBay. It has GB installed. I am not sure what country this is from but the phone's baseband version is N7000UBKK1 and the kernel version is 2.6.35.7-N7000UBKK2-CL705203. I would like to move to ICS. I need US English as the language. So:
(a) What firmware should I use? I want to use Odin to install.
(b) Is there any possibility of bricking my phone due to the eMMC issue? I have run the eMMC Check app from the Play Store and it says the chip is "insane". But the test of the memory completes without errors. I am not really sure I know what this all means but I want to avoid problems (who doesn't).
(c) I understand the brick problem is with ICS and not GB. Does this continue to be a problem with the various JB roms out there?
Thanks for your time and help.
Flash stock open German XXLRQ then, look for it in dr.ketan's thread for stock roms in note original android dev sticy.
There are no official jb roms for note yet and cm10 or aokp based custom jb roms are totally safe for wipes and all.
Sent from my GT-N7000
For people who just Dont know what version they need to install u can check this from settings -about,or simply just install kies and it will detect ur version, then u can let kies install it for u or u can download it from dr.ketan post then root it then flash any safe kernel as speedmod ir hydracore, one last thing just remember not 2 make any wipes while using stock ICS thats all.

The brick bug only triggers on unsafe kernels like stock ICS and only if you do wipes like factory resets.

Hello and thanks to you and the others who have so kindly replied. Does this mean I should find a non-stock ICS ROM to install? I was thinking that going stock would be safer. I was reading this guide <android.gs/update-samsung-galaxy-note-to-official-xxlrq-firmware-update> to updating to the ROM suggested above and near the end it speaks to possibly having to select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ in recovery mode if, after the Odin install completes, the device fails to boot beyond the logo screen. I would not want to get to that point and not be able to do this if needed.
Also, I would eventually really like to get to JB - especially for the on-device voice command processing. If there is a recommended JB ROM that can do this now and avoid the brick problem, I would appreciate recommendations.
Thanks again for your knowledge and help.

ofc you can use ICS Stock Rom. But just to be safe you have to flash safe kernel...Speedmod/Notecore/HydraCore are the safer kernels.
For JB there is no official update available from Samsung for our Note. But you can enjoy it with the efforts that developers are doing for us in XDA.
Go to Android Development Section and Have a look on the Topic Titles. Some of them are AOKP/PA/CM10/AOSP... For Me JellyCore is so far gud. You can find the link in my signatures.
I only know u r now in GB.
GB shld be ok to do full wipe. None reporting mmc brick on GB coz of full wipe.
So....
U can do ur full wipe first on stock GB.
Use pc odin to flash ICS 4.04 LRQ.
Voila.... U r on ICS alrd.
Once u r on ics, and on stock ics kernel....
Pls, do not ever do full wipe.
Unless, after that u root and install ics safe custom kernel, then u r safe to full wipe on ics.
Good luck!

Hello and thanks. I guess it may make sense to bypass the stock ICS which seems to contain issues related to the brick bug and go to something like Jelly Core as you mention. I looked at the page for Jelly Core and see that it says to install using Clock Work Mod and to wipe from a safe kernel first. As a newbie I guess I have some questions:
(a) I am on GB which I understand to be "safe". Is that correct?
(b) Where do I get the CWM for this phone and how do I install it?
(c) To do the "wipe" does that simply mean to use the built-in reset to factory or does this mean something else?
Thanks
Hi there,
a. Yes, Stock GB's are generally safe
b. When your going to flash ROM, each ROM has it's own accompanying CWM.. so when your done choosing which ROM your going to flash your Note to, when your going to bootup in recovery.. and you get the standard CWMR...
c. Yes, Wiping is synonymous to doing the built-in factory reset on your phone (thru Settings), or the alternate way is to go to CWMR and wipe data. Different Methods, same result.
Thanks but...

I am sorry but I am still a bit lost here. Before my N7000 I had a Samsung Skyrocket and flashed it using Odin from the GB that was on it to the stock ICS. I found several guides for this online and it worked fine and easily (although I still feared the brickbug). But this is basically all I know about this stuff.
So how do I flash something like Jelly Core? It sounds like I have to install some other was other than I did with Odin/stock ICS on my Skyrocket. Perhaps I need more of a tutorial on how to do this flashing of custom roms. Any suggestions?
I apologize to all for my thick-headedness.
the best and safest way first is to downgrade back to stock GB. Don't do any thing foolish by just flashing a stock ICS (with an unsafe kernel).
Downgrade first to stock GB and work your way up to eventually flash your preferred custom ROM (in cwmr or odin)
