Dear Experts
I am first time android user, have rooted Droid 3 XT883 & installed Safestrap 1.08.
Later I came to know that it wont's work due to some partition issues.
Now safestrap 1.09 is available for droid 4, will it work on my device?
Also please tell me how shall I uninstall safestrap 1.08 without damaging my phone.
Thanx in advance
Still Unanswered, please help
Please suggest, I am noob in this matter & can't try any dangerous stuff.
use this one!
all the explanations are there also.
if you decide to uninstall safe strap, you go to the main ROM. and nothing bad happens. you just choose disable SAFESYSTEM from recovery, and open SAFESTRAP in phone menu, uninstall recovery...and thats it.
Thanx but still unclear
your link directs to how to safestarp page which I have already gone through several time while downloading 1.08 & installing .
My question is that 1.08 doesn't support XT883 due to some issue with partition size, so shall I try 1.09 releases recently. On site it says it's for Droid 4 so I dont know if it will support droid 3 or not. I am afraid to try without any confirmation as I may brick it & I don't have any backup of ROM till now.
If 1.09 supports XT833 then please tell shall i just install the apk over 1.08 or shall i uninstall 1.08 first then install 1.09?
Droid 4 is a completely different phone. I wouldn't. I would tweet Hash if no one knows why here.
Sent from my XT862 using XDA
Thanx Mr. Obivious
I have posted on his blog & will wait.
Thanx for your advise.
I have a working build of Safestrap 1.06 for ME863 that should also work for the other non-Verizon variants too.
Instructions are at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20976390&postcount=294 and the download's attached a little earlier in the thread, with more instructions.
Thanx

So I have 1.08 installed on my 883, what I understood is that i need to unzip your file which contains two files (recovery & fixM3android.diff. Then I go to etc/safestrap & copy the 2nd-init.zip to my laptop. Extract it & replace the recovery file with yours & zip it again & replace the new 2nd-init.zip in phone /etc/safestrp folder & reboot. It will take the backup.
Few doubts :
1. Is there any chance that I may brick my phone by doing this?
2. Once backup is successful do I need to replace the original 2nd-init.zip for flashing another rom.
3. If i need to restore my original rom do i need to put back your's version of 2nd-init.zip
And many thanks to you for your help. All international droid 3 users shall get benefit if it works out well.
Edit : While zipping your version do I need to specify any specific compression method. As i faced while creating custom bootanimation for droid 3 that if you do a normal zip it doesn't work, it has to be selected store method in compression type.
That sounds right.
I guess it's possible to brick your phone doing this, but I think if it goes wrong you can just battery-pull to bypass 2nd-init for the next boot, and reinstall safestrap normally.
I don't know the answers to the other questions as I don't know what changed between 1.06 and 1.08, and I don't know if restoring works with my code, let alone with stock 1.08.
Sorry, I only threw it together quickly, so it's not massively user-friendly at the moment. I was hoping hashcode or rick#2 would integrate it or something similar, and my version could quietly fade into the mists.

Hii, It didn't brick my phone, I am able to do backup & restore, enable safe system & install another ROM but the new ROM always boots to Black Screen. I have tried CM7.2 & Maverick 4.5. Going to try 1 or 2 more ROMs mean while to make sure it's not ROM problem. Could you suggest something what could be the reason or any workaround.
Thanx
We have same issue. I think we have to install Verizon ROM with .906 then we can install any other ROM.

Today I am gonna try few more ROMs with my tweaked safestrap, if it doesn't workout then I think we need to SBF with .906 & install safe strap then do it. But as I have heard on forums some features of XT883 ROM is comparatively good than others.
Please share if you find some other working solution.
Sure one of my friend having same problem, he well aware of android as compare to me. My primary device is iPhone, So I don't have such knowledge as compare to you also. We are looking into Gummy ROM let's see. And XT883 more stable than these ROM.

Hey, I've been reading through everything I can find about the ME863. I've got Saestrap installed but I can't seem to get it to backup anything or to run any ROMs in safeboot after they've been installed. I have read your solution and done exactly what you say to. I copy over your recovery file then in ES File Explorer I copy over the 2nd-init to a new folder extract it delete the old recovery, put the new one in, compress it and then put it back in the original directory, (I leave the original renamed 2nd-init_original ) however when I go to boot to safestrap it just loads a black screen. Then I have yank out the battery reboot to the bastardization that is Chinese Android and put everything back and then safestrap goes back to sort of working (except not at all really). What am I doing wrong?

Probably the problem is your in zip, I also went through the same. Do as below
1. Install safestrap 1.08 on your phone
2. Copy /etc/safstrap/2nd init.zip to your PC. (file size 1.13 mb)
3. Extract it with winrar to some folder
4. delete the recovery file
5. copy TBBie recovery in folder
6. select all files & zip it to 2nd-init.zip (don't ZIP the folder, that's what mistake i had made & had same problem)
7. verify that zip size is 1.19 mb & when you open it in browser you see files not any folder.
8. replace the tweaked zip with original in etc/safestrap
9. set permission & ownership as original
10. Reboot & you shall be good.
Hey guys, I recently upgraded from my precious S3 (bless your capabilities) to a new S5 (meh).
Long story short, I want three things:
1.) to find the right person who can use my stock AND3 firmware and extract it to create an ODIN-flashable file (is this possible at all?)
2.) understand the best way to create a backup of my current device state
3.) achieve root, which seems insanely easy thanks to geohot
My knowledge of android thus far tells me to root and use Online Nandroid backup app to create a backup. How would I later restore this backup when I want to unroot and restore my phone-state & files to pre-root?
Thanks so much in advance, and please feel free to put my knowledge on blast lol
UPDATE:
-shortydoggg has nice a post over in the general forum, but I still hope to be able to get a flashable file for AND3 instead of having to downgrade and then do an OTA again

You're asking too much if you want specifically AND3. It literally takes 1 minute in order to update to the latest firmware via the guide...
All of this you could've found via Google... *sigh*

[GT-I9070] Unble to root
Hello guys, hope you are well.
As I have less than 10 post, I came here to Q&A to seek for some assistance. The problem is that I cannot root my Samsung S Advance (GT-I9070), I am trying to do so with the method mentioned in the quote below. Basically, when I am in the "Recovery Mode" and when I go to the external storage to open the .zip file, the .zip file is not there...
Any clues?
Model Number:
GT-I9070
Android Version:
4.1.2
Baseband Version:

Build Number:

I finally managed to root JB. It is a hassle free process. No kernel changing required.
It doesn't increase the binary counter.
Download here : Root
How to :
1. Download the zip and place it in the root of your sd card.
PS : SD Card is a must.
2. Reboot to the stock recovery.
3. Select install update from external storage.
4. Select the root.zip file.
5. Viola
Enjoy your rooted JB.
Note : This method has been derived from a method to root SGS2. Thanks to Phil3759 and his thread.

Put that zip in the root of SD Card, not in some folder you have there.

Repartition your external SD card. http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
It is not formating, it is partitioning. Ofcourse backup files from it first.

Hi thank you for the help!
I have found the following app that might do it just with the cellphone:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sylkat.AParted
Going to try it out!
EDIT:
I just finished rooting with the method posted. Thank you for the help, I do not understand why my previous FAT partition did not recognized the .zip file. I tried the method using the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition and worked as a charm.
Thank you for everything
Regards!

noob to rooting
hello, I am a complete noob to rooting.
Although i have my s advance ( on stock jelly bean now ) since more then 2 years now, its only now that i have decided to install a custom rom ( kitkat 4.4 , cyanogenmod 11 to be precise ).
I have been reading around and have seen many people flashing new roms losing their imei no, efs, etc and also may sites advising making a nandroid backup of my current stock rom in case i want to return to it. And that we need to root our device to make up a nandroid and to back up our efs and imei no, etc.
Have also read thtat to go back to stock ROM after rooting, Supersu ( already comes with the package needed to root ) can help me do it just by clicking some buttons ( as easy as that )
So I had decided to root my device to get all the above and came to Shaan`s thread describing how to root s advance. And i read about this temp CWM recovery bit and need to partition my drive, etc.
Now my questions are
a) what is this temp CWM and what is the difference between temp CWM and permanent CWM?
b) Can I make a nandroid backup using the temp CWM?? And can i recover my stock rom if i need to get back to it?
c) Do i need to make a partition using this temp CWM? If so can i go back to the state of stock ROM when i want to revert to it?
d) CAn i make two different backup recoveries ? one of stock ROM and second of debloated rom ( i would like to get rid of samsung apps .
e) Where does the nandroid backup / recovery get stored on the phone?? on internal memory or external memory?? ( i have only a 1 gb micro sd card )?
f) after rooting and doing all of the above can i flash cm 11 kitkat rom or i need to get to unrooted status to do that??
Thanks in advance for the answers and sorry for all the noob questions.
Noob to android - no answers for my questions?

To answer of points a - e is here.
To answer the points f: to be rooted, and already installed CWM while. Or if you want to install a permanently CWM when the stock ROM, then you must install a custom kernel After that, you can flash the CM11 or AOSP ROM.

the link provided was really helpful in clearing a lot of things except
a) what exactly is the difference between temp cwm and permanent cwm. Can i make a backup ( make a nandroid backup ) and make a recovery of the same in case i want to revert to it afterwards ?? ( I understand i will need to install the temp cwm again to do so ).
But will it give me a back up to make that recovery ??
And thanks a lot TPD-21

Of course you can make a backup since the first of installing CWM-temporary, until the permanent CWM. So the conclusion is that: CWM installed while in the stock ROM can be made to:
a). Make nandroid backup.
b). Restoring a backup Custom ROM and stock ROM and of course it's also included CWM.
c). As long as your device is rooted, and as long as it also CWM temporary or permanent at the time still in stock ROM can still be alive and doing everything you want.
Hope it helps. ?

Hello everyone!
Haven't been on these boards for a while, but I thought it was time that I update my trusty razr to Kitkat. I'm very much a noob when it comes to these things, so I just wanted to make sure I had the process right and run it by the experts here, and hopefully clear things up for other people in my situation. Here goes!
*As of right now I'm on KREAT0R'S KTR-ROM, with CWM as my recovery*
1. Download retail Brasil stock rom
2. Flash stock rom over KTR through RSD Lite
3. Install TWRP over CWM through Flashify app
4. Restore the backup created by ManoBros on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/razr-i/development/kitkat-motorola-razr-debloated-4-4-2-rom-t2941026
5. Success?
So, would this process work? Again, total noob here so please feel free to correct anything I *hypothetically* did wrong or missed. Thanks in advance everyone!

as you are in a unlocked bootloader and custom recovery
you only need install TWRP, ( i always install in FASTBOOT mode, ) is some like:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery TWRPrecovery.img
make a bakup of you data
and restore the KK backup.
Wow there's no way it's that easy! I was thinking that I'd need to flash stock Brasil first, since my Jb version is based on EU. Would I still need to flash the stock Brasil or just go straight to restoring the KK backup?
Many thanks for your thread by the way ManoBros, been waiting for KK update page w/ instructions!
just restore the kk backup, i come from KREAT0R'S KTR-ROM too..
if something wrong, then flash stock brasil and start again.
Okay! Just tried flashing Kitkat, and I can confirm everything works! Much easier than I expected, especially with the Flashify app. Many thanks!
Hi All---
I'm an old-time flashaholic who hasn't flashed in a long time.
However, I'm so sick of the memory bug, that I'm going to try out CM12 on my xt1095.
However, I want to verify that there is a way to later return my phone to stock so that I can recieve the OTA when the fix (eventually) comes.
I can't find a thread that tells me how to do it (on the old moto x you would use an sbf, but i don't see anything about that around here.)
Thanks so much for your help in advance...
1 Making a backup in recovery of your actual stock rom and restoring when needed (with twrp for example)
2 Flash via bootloader with fastboot official rom (no zip to flash)
3 using RsdLite using official rom (no zip to flash)
Cheers
Ps: ota is another thing already discussed here

Any clue where I'd find the official ROM (either for fastboot flashing or rsdlite)? I can't find any links...
My phone is already on 5.0, fwiw.
Thanks for the help
There is a lot of topic about stock roms on this forum, in your settings you have to search what version do you have (see picture) and download that one.
But i don't kno if you're expertor maybe you know what you are going to do. I ask you: twrp installed? Rooted? Why not doing a backup without downloading tons of mb and going crazy flashig 10 files?
That's my opinion.
Last word, search this forum, there is a lot of discussion like this one
Forgot screenshot
I don't have the link but the XT1095 retail/tmobile 5.0 full image can be directly downloaded from Motorola just like the images for the Moto X 2013.
