[Q] Help with stock Milestone 2.2.1 from Germany

Hi everyone,
I know this will make me sound like a complete noob but it doesnt matter. Any help or any pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I have a stock motorola milestone 2.2.1. I hate it and have read how stable some of the roms are and I would love to experiment with them. However, never having a windows phone or an HTC before I have no idea how to do this with minimizing the risk.
So I have rooted my phone with universalandroot and have installed rom manager and titanium backup. Unfortunately, I read that rom manager wont work with the Milestone.
All of the threads on boot recovery and other methods seem to differentiate from one another. Is there a safeR method. I know no method is safe. What programs do I need to install on my computer and or my phone for this to work?
I know this a lot and I truly appreciate any help and support from this forum.

First of all, ROM Manager does not work with the milestone. So please remove it and dont ever install Clockworkmod recovery on the milestone.
Second, What ROM do you want to install?
You need Androidiani Openrecovery for all your flashing needs of customs ROMS. You will need rsdlite to flash sbf files and offcourse the Moto usb drivers. Check the sticky threads in the development section. There are many tutorials.

This is easily one of the best ways to get everything done in the way of flashing a custom ROM.

Depending on which ROM you want to install, it will determine what you need to download.
After rooting the phone, you will want to flash a vulnerable recovery sbf via RSD Lite, as shown in that thread the VR you should use will depend on your bootloader version. If you are running 90.78, then you can flash this VR: http://android.doshaska.net/rootable
After that happens, you can create a backup of all of your apps using TitaniumBackup.
Once you do that you want to place OpenRecovery(AOR) on your SD Card. Follow the steps from the first link I posted to get that on. You will want to place the custom ROM that you want into OpenRecovery/updates. If you are planning on using CM7, you will also need to download google apps from the CM7 thread here.
Once that is on, you will want to boot into recovery(power+x, see the Moto M logo, then release and push camera button+volume up), apply update.zip.
From there you want to select the Nandroid menu with the d-pad. Create a nandroid backup of what you want.
Now is the crucial step. You need to wipe the caches and ALL data. Choose wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache partition and wipe data/factory reset.
Now is time to apply your custom ROM!
It is recommended to create a nandroid backup everytime you flash a custom ROM, in case of anything going wrong.
Navigate to apply update in AOR, select the ROM that you want, select yes. Once it is done installing, wipe the caches and data AGAIN.
If you are installing the google apps, you will want to wipe the caches, flash the google apps, then wipe the caches again.
You will probably have to apply the baseband for your carrier, so you will need to navigate to change baseband, and apply the baseband for your carrier.
If you followed those steps, you should have a brand spanking new custom ROM on your phone.

[Q] [noob][Xperia T][4.3] Update to hybrid 4.3

Hi all,
This is a noob question, I’m sorry, but I figured I’d post the question and explain what I understood so others could benefit. As I’m a new user, I’m posting here and not in the development section.
After looking at the new 4.3 ROMs, I figured peetr_ hybrid ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627922) looked good and I am now trying to figure out how to install it.
Right now, I have a Xperia T (LT30p) with CWM-based Recovery v6.0.2.7, Doomkernel 3.4.0 and XperimenT 2.3 (i.e. JB 4.1.2).
Here is how I planned to update [order and wording changed following Alex5699’s comments]:
1) Download a new Kernel, one of the two mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49870676&postcount=13 . One of them has no recovery, so I figure that if I flash one without recovery, I will loose recovery? So I think I will choose this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2604492 in its zipfile version and put it on the phone.
2) Download the zipfile from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627922 and put it on the phone.
3) Go into recovery.
4) Do a factory reset(=wipe data), wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache.
5) Flash the ROM. No reboot before the next step!
6) Flash the kernel.
7) Reboot and be happy.
I just wanted to check if this is the right order (if someone agrees I’ll update the post to remove the question marks) and that I’m wiping the right things. I suppose wiping these things does not erase the content on the virtual sdcard in the phone. At least that’s what I think I remember from last time.

I thought I could get around this but then there is this explanation here:

we do have an official 4.3 out now for the T so basically hes saying latest 4.3 firmware (mainly baseband/radio)(flashtool or official way)
- stock based 4.3 kernel
- working recovery is needed if u wanna flash the hybrid rom .. but since ur on a 4.1.2 rom you jus follow the steps u posted first .. and when they said to flash rom and then kernel without reboot they mean right after rom is install "while on 4.1" go to install again and select the kernel then once thats install then u reboot and allow your phone to boot up .. first time boot may take up to 5 mins so be patient

In other words, you’re saying (just to make sure I understood you correctly):
1) No reboot between flashing the ROM and the kernel. (I had understood that, but you’re right, I should correct that above, and I will).
2) It’s not an issue if I’m not already on a 4.3 kernel (although it’s written in the prerequisites), as long as I follow the instructions above. [For others reading this, there is a list with stock firmwares here for instance http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2648320 .]
3) There will be no need for separate baseband flashing (there is an explanation video on youtube for the Xperia Z for those who don’t know how to do it, I can’t post the link as a xda-noob =D) or for flashing a separate recovery (since the mentioned kernel has already a built-in recovery) after following the instructions above, and no need to fear not recovering my mac-address.
Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to give me some kind of warranty, I’m just trying to make sure I understand what you’re saying.

Hello can anyone help me install a cwm for my 4.4.4 z1 c6903 unlocked bootloader (also rooted . version 4.4.4 with the .108 on the end) ?! I really want to flash a new custom rom for this phone and unlike samsung phones the tutorials on youtube for 4.4.4 are missing !

Hello, i'm newbie here, trying to learn some stuff, i searched the forum but i couldn't find it, i think this page is most appropriate to post it here.
Well i want to flash a custom rom, but my first attempt went not good for me. I've lost my imei and panicked, anyway by flashing stock sony rom i recovered it.
Now i unlocked my bootloader again (it was locked again after i flashed my stock firmware back), rooted my phone, and learned that nandroid app can make a full backup, and even i screw things up (except hard bricking i guess), that backup will save me. So i downloaded it made a full back up, but it says "back up type: clockwork or TWRP,"
And i heard that TWRP is not for Xperia Z1. Thats why i decided to not install it,
Then i installed clockwork rom manager, it said "this app requires clocwork recovery", but i couldnt find a appropriate version of clockwork recovery, the ones i found on play store were for android 4.0.4, and mine is 4.4.4
You guys probably understand that i know almost nothing about this stuff, (i have only got what i read form forums), so what should i do, which version of clockwork should i install or is there any other supported apps that i can use my nandroid backup?

CWM Recovery
There two methods:
1. Unlock your bootloader and flash a custom kernel (Bootloader Unlock is required for flashing custom roms which are not stock based; for example cyanogenmod)
-> with a custom kernel you have cwm and often twrp also.
2. check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/development/newroot-z1-t2807092
maybe you have to flash .108 kernel to use newroot, after rooting you can flash the actually kernel from your firmware....

This will install recoveries and an app called NDR Utils. With this app you can choose the primary recovery of your choice.
I prefer using Philz...(CWM) based. Important rule i've always followed make backups ( Nandroid).

[Q] Return XT1095 to Stock?

Hi All---
I'm an old-time flashaholic who hasn't flashed in a long time.
However, I'm so sick of the memory bug, that I'm going to try out CM12 on my xt1095.
However, I want to verify that there is a way to later return my phone to stock so that I can recieve the OTA when the fix (eventually) comes.
I can't find a thread that tells me how to do it (on the old moto x you would use an sbf, but i don't see anything about that around here.)

Any clue where I'd find the official ROM (either for fastboot flashing or rsdlite)? I can't find any links...
My phone is already on 5.0, fwiw.

There is a lot of topic about stock roms on this forum, in your settings you have to search what version do you have (see picture) and download that one.
But i don't kno if you're expertor maybe you know what you are going to do. I ask you: twrp installed? Rooted? Why not doing a backup without downloading tons of mb and going crazy flashig 10 files?
That's my opinion.

I have ..., guess what ? a RAZR i (Ok, it's a friend's one) that I repaired changing the mad battery after factory resets didn't do anything. Then found OTA was available, applied and the RAZR i was 4.1.2 IIRC and the new battery went OK. My mistake, another OTA went soon, which I applied too, making the RAZR i a 4.4.2 kitkat piece of crap (no more write access to sdcard, this is well known ... by the ones aware , know I'm one).
Then I thought I could make the phone free and search the web for days to try to understand, found a french forum which said I can't do anything without unlocking the bootloader, what I did.
They directed me there to remove the boot-logo-warning but that's a razr hd thread and nothing worked for me. I can't remember where I read I should have CWM to do this, but as the french guy said he rather like twrp I didn't do anything at the moment, only failed to flash some logo from fastboot with various errors....
Well, I'm there, and it's cool because I hope this is the good place to have answers to questions that are still in my mind for years, and 2/3 new ones... fortunately they'll overlap and self-resolve once I get one. I'm not at all skilled in android, I only flashed a phone in 2010 and that's why I still have android SKD in my ubuntu (I also have a xp box, but I couldn't do anything for my old Acer LiquidMT). As you see, I'm a vintage things amateur (... okay, I'm vintage too).
Now the scene is built, please let me dare ask what still puzzles me :
1) For the Razr i 4.4.2 (french from sfr-vodafone kia20.74 now used with another carrier) do I have to search a specifically dedicated recovery ? Parsing this RAZR i Q&A, I found twrp seems to the preferred recovery, but I'd rather like to get confirmation from skilled ones, and also for version.
2) And please tell me if I'm wrong thinking the [RECOVERY] Unofficial TWRP 3.0.2-0 thread aim is to bring support to the RAZR i which is not supported by official teamw.in ? (BTW, @Hazou, the 1st link in the thread - DataMedia - is dead)
3) Assumed I have to go the TWRP way and I only have currently the stock recovery, do I guess right the only way is download img.zip and extract then do

Hey 1stStep,
A lot off assumptions and questions. And most of them are right.
1. Afaik there are 2 recoveries for the RAZR I. Stock and my build TWRP 3.0.2-0 unofficial. (Thanks for the heads up about the link)
2. Answered in 1.
3. Yep. If your bootloader is unlocked it gives u the function to flash non-stock firmware to the phone. Stock firmware are signed to prevent normal users flashing wrong firmware. Firmware consist of a couple of images. Those images contain data for the partition, just like in your PC. Every image does something else. Most known are boot, data, system, recovery and cache. There are many more. Some needed, some unnecessary.
To answer your question: when u have flashed the TWRP recovery u override the stock one. The TWRP can flash zip files and images to the most known device partitions. From here on u can flash a superuser zip(gives root access on the current ROM/system). Make sure u have the right superuser zip. There are many.
4.
Path to root on stock:
Unlock bootloader->install custom recovery (TWRP)->install superuser zip->reboot and test root on device
Path to custom ROM:
Unlock bootloader->install custom recovery (TWRP)->install ROM zip and extra's if needed like (Gapps(needed for Google playstore and more))->reboot and play with your new ROM.
Off course if u already have the bootloader unlocked and installed a custom recovery, u can skip those.
In the recovery u can also make backups, called nandroid backup. Read up on them and everything u wanna do.
5. The only thing u never want/should do is flashing Android 4.0.4 stock firmware without prior modifications. This is because from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 there was a change in bootloader (the thing u unlock). If u go back it corrupt a part of the firmware which is difficult to overcome or even impossible without some factory stuff. Everything above 4.1.2 is save. And can always be flashed. The latest stock is 4.4.2 (KIA 20.74) and latest available custom ROM is 4.4.4 (CM11 or soon Lineage 11).

Do I have to understand custom ROMs are yet rooted (OOTB), or root yet made on stock will survive flashing the custom (I though flashing a custom was some kind of infant clear brain graft?
BTW, is it general good advice to test recovery before flashing? I found this in Moto Play unofficial recovery 3.0.2-r5 from Vache:

Do I have to understand custom ROMs are yet rooted (OOTB), or root yet made on stock will survive flashing the custom (I though flashing a custom was some kind of infant clear brain graft?

- Most custom roms are prerooted.
- Cyanogenmod/LineageOS are prerooted
- Root installed by a zip will not survive any system flashing (rom flashing)
- Any modification to your system partition will not survive and system flashing (rom flashing), though 1 exception:
- installed gapps package (google apps/play store etc.) will survive system flashing on cyanogenmod based roms. But only when updating the rom to a newer version on the same android version. So:
CM11 version 1 to CM11 version 2. (because of a special script in the install zip)
Pre testing a boot or recovery image is blocked on our bootloader. So u can't do it. It's a shame they did it. Working on any boot or recovery changes is a pain in the spoken ass.
If u flash the recovery with:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
there is nothing to be afraid off. The TWRP 3.0.2-0 recovery is well tested on this device.

You're right, it's a shame all these locked things in our phones. I'm sure the guys that agree (our security, blah blah) with these ways to do won't be so happy the day their computers will be locked the same way.

[Edit] .... hmmm, how long does it take to flash? Yet a 1/4h elapsed and razr still says "Flashing recovery..."
Please, what is the md5 of the image (not the zip, this you give us)? Thanks

[Edit] : I've been puzzled for days being stuck in endless "Flashing recovery ..."
In the ended I decided, after saying 1 hour waiting a hypothetical "success/congrats message", NOT QUITTING the current fastboot screen, to select the recovery option in this very fastboot menu (on a Razr i : Vol- to highlight recovery item, then Vol+ to select) and bang I was in TWRP menu. What to do next once in, it is another story.
