1. That require JB.
2. You can root with Shaaan's JB root method.
There is just Russian version of JB, so if you want KIES or OTA update to JB, you have to wait for JB to be released in your country.

I sent you a pm too.
Download kernel, put it in your phones memory and use this app to install it. It is most safe and easy way.

As long as the firmware that you want to flash is Stock, you will be able to update, but you will lose Root.
The Rom in your link is stock but from Taiwan, so the CSC will have limited update options in the future. More details are given in the original thread of this Rom here.
Hope that helped!
Yes thanks.. well as its newer than the LPY German, I just thought maybe it'd be better to install this one instead. What do you suggest?

I suggest not to flash a LPY Rom, there is high risk of bricking your device. If you are not so familiar with this i advice you to look around for details about the procedures.
IMO, flash via PC-Odin a GB Rom, or a Custom GB rom (Chrack's is the Best) and then if you want a custom ICS pick one of the new, such as MidTeam 1.3, CM9, RocketRom etc.
Hope i could help!
I see.. u think even the new Taiwan one LPF would be risky? Cause I read there are many things which are not working in CM9. About MidTeam and Rocket I don't know.. will have to look at them.

LPF is better and safer than LPY.
Since you want the LPF just flash it, many people say that it works fine.
To be clear here, i haven't tried it. I prefer CM9 but it's just a matter of taste after all!
Public Service Announcement:
DO NOT FLASH OR WIPE USING ANY ICS REPACK OR STOCK KERNEL
Not even wiping in stock recovery is safe with affected kernels. Almost all ICS kernels for the GT-N7000 are affected.

Please stay on GB for now... There is a bug on EMMC that effects all leaked ICS roms so far. Read the Public Service Announcment:
Even official LPF rom is effected by this bug.

Hi cistamlaka, be aware that it is your uncle's phone, not yours. So I would be very careful on rooting and upgrading to a different rom. If he is on a stock 2.3.3, I think (because I had it) there is an update to 2.3.6. It fixes a couple of lags.
If you root him the phone and push some new rom onto it, he might be confused because he will lose the TouchWiz and some applications. Check first with him, what applications (and if some Samsung-made) he uses and if he is okay to change the looks of the phone.
Isnt it right that he has only to download a file and change it to "update.zip" to flash it via stock recovery? A friend of me needs that file, is it the same to use as on sgs plus (i9001)?

Hello,
So after getting some knowledge of the things (thanks Shut_Down :good, I was wondering which is the best combination for this phone?
Right now I am running the stock ROM and kernel.
Will the new official JB upgrade also change kernel or just ROM?
Since people here have already tried different combinations, which combinations have you found that give good, consistent and fast running?
Thanks!

Same here. Stock JB LQ4 + ThunderZap 3.5.
So I am guessing I will upgrade to the stock JB ROM (till there will be a JetMod version of JB).
1) Which would be a better kernel set CoCore or ThunderZap?
2) I am right now still running the stock GB ROM.
What would be the right upgrade process kernel update then rom, or rom and then kernel?
The reason I am thinking kernel first is because I still don't have a custom recovery (using the stock brand) so i can't backup or load new roms.
What do you think?
Thanks!

Try both and see what firs you better. And about order, you can install ROM with temp. CWM, but I suggest you use permanent, with custom kernel. So first kernel, than ROM.

If I install the stock ROM will I be able to get it in my local language (Hebrew), or do I need to download a specific ROM that is already in my language?

Hm, on this Russian JB there is no Hebrew as I see. So if you want it you should wait for release for your country or any with your language.

OK, Thanks.
Last question, when just changing kernel, do I need to do any wipes / resets (I have read about dalvik cache, factory wipes etc.) ? Or is that just for when installing new ROM's?

Hi guys
I recently brought a 2nd hand n7000
This rom is totally stock, to be precise, it is a Hong Kong version 4.0.4
Since I want to improve the battery life and have a more defined rom.
I would like to root and install CWM.
Up to now, I understand that there's the infamous brick kernels out there. And I probably need to stay away from ICS.
But because of my n7000 is 2nd hand, i don't know much history about it.
i can not know for sure, that this n7000 is shipped with GB or ICS at the first place?
Or the last guy actually upgrade it from a GB.
My research in this forum tells me it's always better to start with the JB aka 4.1.2 stock.
My question is can i simply flash a HK 4.1.2 as a base without doing all sort of EMMC checking?
Then, flash kernel comes with root & CWM? And finally my rom of choice?
I would like someone could guide me and show me the SAFE way,
Thx in advance!!
Ya.. You can upgrade to JB.. Use of Odin or Kies. Then use Philz kernel to root and get cwm. Now you may proceed with custom roms.
Thx for answering.
I have successfully upgraded my n7000 to JB
it's ZSLR1 (Hong Kong latest stock JB)
Just one more question about rooting.
Can you help me check if this is the correct kernel?
philz_touch_6.19.3-n7000.zip
from http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/n7000
I am planning to use the stock recovery method.
I am too afraid to brick this n7000 with "wrong" kernel
THX

That kernel is fine if you plan to flash another 4.1.2 or touchwiz based ROM. If you plan on upgrading to kit kat or 4.3jb custom ROMs, you will need raw kernel instead.

use philz kernel for ICS the one that matches your Build number in About Phone. Use the .zip version to flash in stock recovery. You can also update to JB via Kies or OTA and then root it using philz kernel for JB. Search for Philz kernel for N7000.
