Lens flare? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone else having really bad problems with lens flare? I've taken some evening shots around town and the flare from streetlights is unbelievable! Even kitchen lights are doing it. Galaxy S3 and iPhone 4S are fine - a very small amount, but nothing like the XZ.
Anyone else having the same problem, or think I may have a faulty unit?

Clean the camera lens.

Make sure you have HDR mode On or using Superior Auto. No flares here - i took some photos with direct sunlight and they still are good.

Cleaning the lens really helped. Wonder if the lens doesn't have oleophobic coating (I never once cleaned the lens of my galaxy s3 or iPhone)

Try not to touch the lens by your hand or fingers.
This happens with all phones not only the Z.
Maybe s3 and iPhone has better placement for the camera.

Maybe it's exaggerated due to the fact that Xperia Z uses a glass lens and not plastic lens like other phones ?

[Q] Camera lens scratches

Hello, so yesterday i noticed some scratches on the camera lens and i can feel them with fingernails. So i googled about scratches on lens and almost everywhere they said it does not affect pictures that much but when i try to take pics with my SP they turn out to be fuzzy/blurry.Im afraid the warranty doesnt cover it too
Any advice what should i do?
Sorry for my english and if this thread is in the wrong section feel free to move it
after 2 months the camera lens looks terrible. im not using protective case but it is in pocket on its own no keys or lighter next to it. somehow the camera LENS got nice scratches. there is a purple color shine on the lens like on eyeglasses which supposed to be scratch resistant layer but it has gone completely. since the lens is not covered physically i have to clean the fine dust off the lens to take photo. what i see the on closer look is that the scratches are drawing circles that makes me think the lens is so soft material that the cleaning causing the scratches. i guess its plastic. i havent checked it yet but after replacing it ill do a test. i ve found on sony support forum a link where u can buy replacement lens which is by description 100% glass.
interesting that the screen itself is very durable but this tiny round lens is a crap. disappointing from sony. very stupid mistake of chosing this material for such a nice phone. i am thinkin to call them and make a complaint. :crying:
Yup, mine is scratched too, every photo looks like Joan Collins c1986.
I believe it's just stuck on so should be easy to replace.

faulty assembly?
My mate said that purple layer is a kinda filter (flare,uv or whatever) supposed to face to camera. Is that possible?

I have the same problem, and I just bought one.
Here's a question for people who have changed it : do you have to unscrew the back of the phone (not just the back cover) or can you change it directly ?
From what I've seen, the lens and the "camera ring" might be "glued" directly, but might as well have to come off from the inside.
Another thing, there's one screw that's not directly visible, it's under the antenna, at the bottom of the phone...
Some help would be really appreciated !
Thx
I managed to get the ring off with just my finger nails, the ring and lens are two separate pieces, when the ring is off, the glass sits in a recess, so may be a bit tricky to remove.

Is there any purple coating on the replacement lens? If no than its just a plain glass and not like the original. I will just polish off the coating. On photo there is sharp area just as the clean area of the lens.
Thanks for the tip @technaudio.
@r1kkHUN : I'll tell you when I get it, but since it's an original part, I guess it'll be there, i'd make no sense otherwise.
Good luck with the polishing, I'm affraid I doubt it'll solve the problem though.
T cut or some fine rubbing compound that you polish a car with might work?

Hi.
Just got the new lens, and changed it.
Easy and fast, and the result is perfect, and for only 11€
There isn't any purple coating on the new one I got, but it seems to be okay, I'll try to take pictures in the sun as soon as the weather gets better.
I did a little guide about it on a french forum, if you want to have a look at the pictures.

[I9001] stains on photos

Last few weeks I've noticed some stains on any pictures taken with my phone's (rear-facing) camera. They have been getting progressively worse as well... I think there's dirt somewhere but after taking the phone (partially) apart and cleaning the inside & outside of the back cover in plus the outside of the camera module nothing has changed.
Any opinions? Should I get a new camera module or can I somehow clean this one? Did I do something wrong with my phone or is this normal?
Attached is a picture of a clean white surface, which does not look very clean on the picture!
Thank you for any information!

It looks like there is some dirt on the sensor, or between sensor and the lens. Let it be cleaned in Samsung service.

[Q] Just Got my Xperia Z1 C6906

Hi guys, just wanted to share with you my opinion, yesterday i saw the device in the store, fall in love with it and started to read about it, and found that firmware update helped a lot with the camera quality so i took a shot and bought it, i must say im very sad with the camera performance. frontal camera is useles and is very hard to get good pics on the main one even in the last firmware 257, i was an iphone 5 owner, sick of OS but also i have to say that the frontal camera was very good, every thing else ok but the camera quality BIG FAIL tried everything manual auto 20 8 iso AV etc etc perhaps a defective lens ?? please help
Hmmppfff other than the fact no one ever said the front camera is good? The. 257 helped wuth main camera performance...
If that so importent to you there is a chinease phone by THL called monkey king, it had 13 mp front camera and costs 250$ go knock yourself out.
Btw the main camera is a blast! Especially at night.

This is the worst frontal camera i have used. and not the cheapest phone i have bought and NO is NOT A BLAST. for me thats a lie, btw i was not asking for advice in chinnese phones i was asking for orientation in defective lens. so knock yourself out some where else kid.
Perhaps you didn't remove the front protecting film from the screen, it makes the camera blurry...

i did, its naked. on 257 firmware
No yellow hue
a ltl overheating
no touchscreen issue at all
just the camera, main reason i bought it.
any way to confirm a defective lens ?
It's been said time and time again here, the camera itself is quite capable. It's the unpredictable Auto mode that kills it. You need to have the right manual settings on each different photo scenario to capture the perfect picture.

Camera can't focus on anything

The camera cannot focus at all when I'm taking a close range shot. Pictures always come blurry as a result. Anyone else have this issue?

If you looked at the film that covered the lense, it didn't actually cover the lense center. There is a hole in it for the shooter even if you don't remove it. That wasn't the cause. The shooter is just wonky on finding good contrast for focus, especially anything less than 6"
I have also the same problem.

It still effects the focus it happens on the s4 and on the s5 you must have a bad camera

It does not effect the camera, it is not in line of sight. My camera works fine(I don't have the film, regardless). The cameras focal distance isn't great if the subject isnt super high contrast if less than 6".

Source, because no. This rear camera is not a wide angle in the strictest sense. By your logic it would take pictures of its own bezel if the small film would be in line of sight. That's not the case, the front camera is an 88 degree wide for close field (selfies and such) the rear is not.

Im sorry but I had the same problem with the s4, s5, and so did a whole bunch of people. If you dont know what your talking about then why are you still arguing. It clearly messes up the focus because A: Dust and hair start to collect over it and B: it keeps trying to focus while its on which causes blurry pics
And if OP could chime in I bet removing this made his camera better
I wasn't arguing, I stated its not a wide angle, it isn't. The front lenses is 88degree for wide. I also still stand(with no sticker) that the rear shooter isn't the greatest at focus. These sensors are still just over hyped webcams. My bias towards specific detail comes from photography experience.
Further, I hope OPs problem is solved too.

See I dont have a problem with focusing unless im a inch above it but i feel like thats expected with theses cellphone cameras. I just like the fact how much detail it retains
I still have the little plastic film on my lens and have no problem taking picture with it! Not once my pictures were affected by the film.

Like you, I kept it on my S4 for a long time and it didn't cause any problems either. However, like I mentioned before, not all of these phones are alike. It might not cause a problem for some while it does for others.
To the OP, the best thing to do is remove it and see if the problem persists. If it does, exchange the phone until you get one that works right.

I'll pass, nothing wrong with my camera, higher Megapixels means larger file size. Pain in the ass trying to send pics through MMS. I'll wait for the M9, full glass screen looks sexy.
Once i cleaned that film off the lense the camera has been perfect.
My focus seems to lock on faster too after cleaning the lenses.

I could have used the 13 megapixel camera the other day verses the 4 MP. Took a picture that I wanted to blow up poster sized that turned out grainy...
That is the one thing that I dislike about HTC, they keep releasing phone after phone after phone with additional features and functions. So when you paid for the latest and greatest you have outdated technology...

There is this other technology called a real camera if you wanted a poster size picture. Even with a 13 megapixel cellphone camera it is going to look grainy compared to a SLR camera.

I did the same thing, one day the pics looked horrible then I read up on it and did the toothpaste and cotton swab trick and my pics have been great. Very strange how it went bad like that, but, as it was said the pictures for me do what I need.

I personally had better luck with the corner of a credit card method. I tried the toothpaste and swab but I guess it wasn't gritty enough (not enough baking soda in the paste) or something. For me it just made the film on the lens worse, then I tried the credit card method and worked like a charm.

+1 on this. Folks gotta keep in mind that the camers isnt an Olympus or a Nikon. Its a phone camera. There are alot of editing apps out there to make the pics you take with a phone much much better. I use SnapSeed for editing with some pretty impressive results.
The camera on this thing sucks. Period. The front camera is ridden with distortion as is the back camera. I have a pro camera as I am a photographer, howvwer I expect my phone that was advertised as having amazing camera. to at least take decent pics. It just doesn't. I do like take the occasional selfie, but never end up using it because there is just too much distortion. People say we expect too much from cell phone cameras. BS. I had a G2, it took excellent pics. As did all of my iPhones. This phones camera is a POS

I honestly have no issue with the camera on this device. Ask the selfies I've taken turned it great. Maybe your camera lenses need to be cleaned?
I've had two m8's. Both have suffered from terrible distortion. Start your front camera and take a pic of yourself. Notice how if the camera Is on anything but the same plane as your face your head gets distorted. The top of your head looks stretched out, etc. There have been a lot of other people complainging about the distortion and that isn't caused by a dirty lens

As a photographer you should know that even with a dslr you get distortion depending on focal length and lens.. You expect better from a front facing cell cam??I Don't personally use the front cam as I don't take selfies but rear cam has produced some great shots, but it's a cell phone so instagram is all that I use it for. Wouldn't dare pull it out to take pics of clients.

You are absolutely right, but they also have in camera software that automatically corrects it under certain conditions. Or you fix it in post. Heck it also depends on the lens manufacturer. One lens can be 50mm with almost no distortion, the next 50mm lens could be riddled with distortion so it also depends on the lens you choose. Also with SLR cameras there a thousand lenses so it's a different ball game. This is one lens, one phone, one focal length, with absolutely repeatable results. That could not have been possibly been missed during the testing of this phone. If they wanted to keep costs low, understandable because it IS just a phone canera, but they could have easily compensated by fixing it in the cameras software It's bad enough to a point where I'm ready to switch devices... as much as I love this phone. If you don't take selfies that's fine, but for us that do, having your head elongated and your facial features distorted if the phone is not absolutely 100% perfectly parallel to your face is to me, absurd..considering there are a ton of other phones, similarly equipped camera wise, that do not suffer from this issue.
It boggles me. I can deal with a little distortion. However the distortion in the "selfie" camera is extreme. Ruins every shot. This should have been a situation in which during testing and software development, which IM SURE THEY EXPERIENCED, that they have put a script in there to fix the distortion. They knew they put a wide angle lens in the front camera assembly, and should have put the software fixes there to correct it, because every m8 experiences it (I've tried SEVERAL. and there are tons of complaints about it) Do I expect too much? NO! There are a thousand other camera phones that have wide front elements, that do NOT suffer from the same level of distortion, and if they do have it, they were smart enough to have the software fix it before it spits out the final picture to you. Flagship android device, ruined by a terrible front facing camera. My opinion
