[Q] Can we have dark on-screen touch buttons? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can we make the on-screen buttons as black instead of grey like the japanese docomo models? I mean will there be a mod for that? It looks so much better as it blends with the phone with darker on-screen buttons!

This must be the #1 requested mod - and i'm sure devs are working towards that. I have a wee bit of patience (but not too much!), and am waiting for it too!

it would appear that you're using the (W)VGA version with a WQVGA device. Try the (W)QVGA version in the first post.

PureBlack?
With all due respect (and genuinely mean that, cause I sure as hell haven't been able to create anything of the sorts... although I'm still trying) But for "PureBlack3" There sure is a lot of white and faded shades of gray rather than black. if it's call pure black, then make all the backgrounds in the menu's, and GUI in general, that are usually white... make those black, invert the font colors, and you'll be amazed just at how much batter life alone you will be saving people. The handset expends little to no power to display a black pixel, because there is simply nothing to display. Displaying a white pixel uses the most battery power. It's also really helpfull when usign the handset in a night time vehicular setting because you have less light distracting your vision.
Could maybe it be possible if you were so inclined, when creating PureBlack4, or perhaps a PureBlack3a, truly make it as pure black as possible.
I apologize if in anyway this post is insulting or derrogatory, for that was not my intention. Keep up the good work.

With respect, I disagree.
As an electrical engineer, I can confidently assure you that the color of a pixel has an unnoticeable effect on battery life. Black backgrounds would have no effect on battery life. The backlight is the battery-drainer, and the theme has nothing to do with that. Other than that, the way that WM is written, it's almost impossible to do what you're suggesting. My aim was to give a "mostly black" theme that the Microsoft set of themes were missing. I suppose your argument on the semantics of the theme name is correct, but I guess that's why I'm not an english major
Thanks for the suggestion!

[Q] "Lighter" theme/Menu options

Hi!
I've been trying out different ROMS and most of them look pretty decent, but coming from a HTC MyTouch 4g, what I've missed the most is one theme/Rom that is actually NOT black/dark, but has "lighter"-background (ie., light greyish) menus and, particularly, light-background boxes for the menus that pop from the bottom when you press, well, the menu button (how do you call those boxes? I've had a lots of trouble trying to run a proper search).
Any pointers or recommendations on where to look for a theme like this would be much appreciated!

I'm working on a new theme called White Fire. It should be out in the next few days. All menus and popups are white. Check out the phoenix and Firefly Themes thread in the next few days.
Hey, sounds great! Looking forward to seeing it!
By the way, why is the overwhelming majority of (or all) themes black? White looks so much more modern

I am also working on a white theme called PISS...polar bear in snow storm.
In all seriousness, I believe that most themes are black in nature to conserve battery life.

Actually, if you followed Android OS then you would know black is actually more modern. Go get a G1 and look at how the 1.5/1.6 theme is, and that came first.
Black/dark is better for battery life on a SAMOLED. It's why Gingerbread is dark/black for the Nexus S.

Day one with HTC one

Hi all,
I'm coming from and SGSII and I'm in the process of trying to setup my One how I like it. There's a few things troubling me though.
-The blacks of the screen don't seem especially black and it seems there's no way to adjust the contrast. The whole screen seems a bit flat/grey
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
-The icons on my SII are a lot better
-I'd like the notification bar to be black
-On the SII I have gps switched off but weather apps still work, with the HTC gps has to be on.
-I'm going to have to root this phone to get adfree aren't?
I'm using nova launcher so a lot of things are similar but those things above are really bugging me. I've googled all of them and had no luck so let me know if I'm missing anything.
Thanks.
I didn't read your whole post but to get white text on black you are going to have to go with an inverted Rom, like d3rp or 42One I am sure there are others but those two come to mind.

Thanks, I might hold off on rooting for a while.
The main thing I wanted to check was that I wasn't missing an obvious settings and that the screen was working properly, it's VERY flat and grey compared to my SII.
Overall it's doing a good job but the screen is going to have to take some getting used to.

This is the difference between AMOLED and LCD. The contrast on the One is pretty much the best available on a phone LCD, but it is still an LCD, and cannot match the black levels of AMOLED.
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
The menus on the SII are white on black because white is a very expensive color to display, battery-wise, on an AMOLED screen. Inverted roms, or themes, will fix this for you.
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
Depends on the app you're using. If you're speaking about within Sense (settings, app drawer, etc) then yeah I guess, but I'm not sure why you would need the long scrolling in such short lists.
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
Uninstall/disable them via settings>apps or kill them with an app.

Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated. Much as I feared the about the screen. It's a shame, I do really like OLED. Those are the two big things now, the screen and lack of centre button. It's stupid because most apps now have a black bar at the bottom which takes up about 10% of the screen for the 'options' button. A button would be much better. If it had those two things it would be the perfect phone in my eyes.
Makes sense about the menus, I checked out the 42One rom and it looks pretty good. I spent yesterday getting everything set up so I'm going to wait to root and flash.
The scroll/flick behaviour is a bit different but some lists do have a 'mega-scroll' so that was me I guess, I'd still prefer it if it was a bit looser.
I found the only option was to disable certain apps, I guess I won't be able to get into removing stuff until I root the phone.
Maybe I should have said i don't like the stock icons, I still prefer the SII one but have since downloaded some icon packs so we're all good there.
On my journeys I saw someone had written a little program to guide you through rooting your phone so I'll have to find that again. I'd also like to backup my stock setup in case of warranty issues further down the line.
Thanks again.

You can use the HTC Logo as menu button. But you'd need a custom kernel that supports that.
AMOLED displays are usually very over saturated compared to IPS LCD displays. But IPS will give you a more accurate color and truer whites and blacks.

The HTC logo doesn't have a capacitive sensor, the "logo button" feature actually uses the first row of pixels immediately above the logo as a button.
Not trying to attack anyone here, just want to make sure that the information is explained a bit more.

Yep, it's the tradeoff you made when you picked LCD.
If its any consolation, displaying white on your S2 actually caused the display consumption to go up drastically (sometimes double the power required) while on LCD the screen uses a much more consistent amount of power. The whites on your One -should- appear as truer whites, while yes, the black will be more washed out.

Useful to know, thanks!
Thanks for the input, being brand new to HTC I'm still learning what's available.
Ideally I like Nova so I'd like to keep that. I'd like the general menus to be white text on black BG, I can clean things out with Titanium and stop ads with adfree.
From what I can tell I'm going to need to root the phone and then install a rom.
Are there 'pre-optimized' roms? Are there any Roms which are basically stock except for the colour flip? Can I get 4.3 in there as well? That middle button would be great too. My SII came with swype, I miss that.
I've found instructions on rooting but a little unsure which rom to go for, konfuzion's suggestion of 42One looks ok but I don't know what's out there, supported and up to date.
If you have any more thoughts they're always welcome
I'm gonna need some help on this guys.
I'm in the UK on the EE network, can I download any rom or do I need a specific 'EE' one?
Do I need a rom if I just want superuser privileges and a reversed/inverted menu? (also be able to install titanium backup and adfree)
I think I can handle the rest of it.
Thanks.
Well you most likely have a gsm one so you wouldn't want to flash anything in the sprint one section. And seeing as your gsm i believe there are a few roms over there that are 4.3

Tempted by the Z1 but why so few roms?

Hello!
I come from HTC One and S4,both are good but the One has this purple issue in camera and the S4 is boring plastic.
The Z1 is a good choice but I am afraid of its weight/size as well as a too rare roms and mods.
I am afraid to get bored.
No news about incoming devs for Z1?

Fact is the stock software is pretty good so there is in my opinion no need for cooking modded stock ROMs, and there is a problem right now (should be solved in the 4.3 release this month) with the camera in AOSP, so that's why there's few of those.
But it is a great phone, the build quality is fantastic, the the overall feel of the phone is just superb, and it flies in all the menus, I have yet to notice any lag whatsoever.
I love flashing roms and trying out all the various features of each one, but I've had no temptation to flash my Z1, so far, and if the 4.4 update is as fast and smooth as it is on other devices I don't think I will be flashing it.
But I saw that even mods are missing like transparent statusbar and weather...
Can you make the capacitive virtual buttons bar transparent or it will eat from the 5'' screen?
I have hated Sony phones for so many years (with no specific reason). Until I bought this phone and realized how ignorant I was. This is the best and fastest android phone I have ever owned, and I have tried many HTC's Samsung's and LG's. I really don't care much if there will be many ROMs for this phone, it is good enough with the stock one.

statusbar and navibar are 50% transparent in stock firmware. I rooted my Z1 3 day ago and bought GMd gesture control app. It's fantasic and you can do your own gesture to hide status and navi bars
Coming from the HTC One myself and couldn't be happier, I do look over my shoulder at times but the One is a come down from the Z1 and living with it for a little while is enough to make you see that, all the mods I could possibly need I already have.
I don't regret it at all.

New icon, contributions are welcome! (completed)

For the next version (probably named 2.6), @GermainZ has made big contributions for a refreshed, more holofied design. I think this would be the right time to introduce a new logo as well. If you want to contribute, but can't code, this is your chance.
Some trivia about the current/old logo:
I quickly put it together when I first published the installer two years ago.
The "X" obviously stands for Xposed.
It's hardly visible in the resized icons, but the blood drops below the X actually read "posed".
The "deeper meaning" of the logo was to illustrate how Xposed hits right into the heart of Android, exposing functionality that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
I'm not involved in the Heartbleed bug, even tough it has been introduced around the same time.
Anyway, after two years, I think it could use a refresh. I have attached a draft, mainly based on work by @natezire71. It combines two ideas that I like a lot: "X" for Xposed, and a puzzle piece as a symbol for the modularity. As it will still take some more time until the next release, I thought I'd open this thread for improvements and new ideas.
Some guidelines:
The logo should reflect what Xposed is about. I like the puzzle idea, but there may be other good symbols.
Yet, it should be a rather simple shape to make it usable even for small icon sizes.
It should look nice on light and dark backgrounds.
The original image size should be 864x864 according to http://developer.android.com/design/style/iconography.html (I made the mistake to apply colors only to the resized copy, therefore the smaller attachment)
If possible, please use a file format like PSD with multiple layers for the individual elements and ideally vector graphics, that makes it much easier to edit/rearrange parts later (my example isn't good again, I had to get rid of layers to line up the X with the outline).
I'll see how the reactions are, then I'll decide if I like a single logo so much that I will use it, or put up a poll for you to choose one. Feel free to post just a sketch of your ideas to test how I like it (before putting much effort in finalizing it).

assuming that you're interested in feedback as well, my vote goes toward "non-pastel" colors. i prefer saturated colors over washed out stuff, basically putting quite some time to change ugly icons to my liking this is jus throwing in my dice, hope it's welcome
Current Devices:
I9100, PAC-ROM 4.3.1 ( Formerly Omni, PA, Dorimanx, etc. )
N7000, 4.1.2 TouchWizz All Stock ( very motivating to continue flashing custom roms further haha.... )
N7100, Cyanogenmod 11, Xposed Framework ( Formerly AOSNP, PAC, Omni, PA, Devil, Thor, AGNI up to 2.7.6, etc. )
Nexus 4, Cataclysm 4.4.2, Franco Kernel r203, Dalvik & Bionic Patched, Xposed Framework ( Formerly PAC, PA, Cataclysm, Faux, etc. )
Nexus 5, Cyanogenmod 11, ElementalX, Xposed, ( Formerly Cataclysm, Franco & FKU Color Control, Dalvik & Bionic, Faux, Bricked, Chaos etc. )
Sure, feedback is welcome! I definitely have more skills in software development than in graphic design.

Thanks! But keep in mind that icons are displayed at small sizes, e.g in the title bar of the app. I'm afraid that the details in @DD-Ripper's suggestion will get lost at such sizes. Then it wouldn't be much more than a blue circle.

I agree, I like the clean style. @DD-Ripper, did you plan that that the icon should have a opaque background, possibly with slightly rounded corners, or would the background be transparent? Transparent would probably create clearer outlines, but requires outlines in the icon itself (e.g. your latest suggestion would not work on a white background).
Could you post a preview with just the icon, resized to 48x48 px (used for medium resolution), so we get a better impression what it would look like on a phone with less details?
