Hello guys,
I would like to flash a different version of CWM onto my N7000 but somehow it does not stick.
I currently run AOKP 4.1.2 and it has 6.0.1.5 as CWM which always gives you the md5 generation error when you do a nandroid backup.
I've installed Rom Manager and downloaded a different version of CWM and tried to install it both with Rom manager and also in CWM itself.
On the first boot after I flash some other recovery like the one from rom Manager (6.0.1.2) it actually loads the new recovery and lets me do a sucessful nandroid for example, but when i reboot into recovery another time the old recovery is back.
When I flash a new rom though, the CWM does get permanently replaced. I flashed a different rom which came with CWM 6.0.2.8 and then I permanently had that version. (same behaviour when I tried to overwrite it with the 6.0.1.2, wouldnt stick).
I even tried just partially restoring the nandroid and leaving boot out, but then phone will get stuck on boot.
Is there any way to permanently flash a recovery to the note without overwriting the whole boot.img? CWM and Rom Manager do not seem to be able. Maybe Heimdall or ODIN? Been so long since I had to use them..
Hope someone knows whats goin on with the recoveries.?!
because the recovery is in the kernel. to change recovery, you need to change the kernel. MD5 error is a known bug in AOKP.
you can use this

thanks man, yea i got some tools installed that should be able to do a nandroid from running system, was just wondering if there is a way to permanently switch the recovery - it is sometimes booted, right after flash but then its gone - so there must be a way to stop the restore or?
Or are there any custom aokp kernels out there for the n7000? usually they only support TW or CM as far as I saw, or only older versions.

hello .
i am using galaxy s i9000 , with stock ddjv9 , n speedmod kernel .
i flashed speedmod kernel n i was able to reboot into cwm recovery using 3 buttons .
then i installed rommanager from market but it was not recoznising the cwm recovery version , so i flashed cwm recovery again frm rom manager .
but when i select reboot into recovery or back up rom frm rom manager it reboots to stock 3e recovery , n doesnt perform any backup .
i can still boot into cwm recovery 2.5.1.2 using 3 buttons .
plzz help . i want to use rom manager to perform backup .
Forget from manager and you your recovery to perform a backup. It's called a nandroid back up, it saves your whole system in its current configuration.
You restore this backup if something goes wrong and you can't boot up to your home, but you can still use recovery. If you want to backup apps and stuff then use other means such as titanium backup. If you want specific backups then let me know and I will give you a list of what i use.
As far as I know rom manager does the same thing however automates it so you don't have to go to recovery and go through the selections. Another thing you may need to be aware of is if rom manager doesn't recognise your recovery, any backup you attempt to make may be corrupt and un usable. If you want to fix recovery you may need to reflash your kernal. Not just CWM. This should retain all data and settings.
Hop that helps

But i cant do back up frm cwm recovery too . Its reboots into 3e recovery n nothing happens .
I want to use rommanager to flash custom roms after making a backup .
So my main aim is to make cwm recovery working thru rom manager .
My rommangaer can detect cwm recovery . After i selected flash recovery frm rommanager. But cant reboot into it or do other functions.
Plz help. With steps to perform.

3. i can get into clockworkmod recover v 3.0.0.5 by pression those 3 buttons.

Thought you could get into this recovery??
Are you saying when you use the 3-button combo to get to this recovery it works, but then trying to make a backup does not work??

So what your saying is although rom manager detects it (recovery), it is useless as you cannot get into it to make a backup via rom manager
I suggest first go to manage apps and clear data for rom manager>>>open up rom manager>>>make a backup.
*CWM not detected?>>>flash via Rom manager>>>Backup...Remember because you are on stock your device is Galaxy S not Galaxy SMTD. As i believe MTD is for cyanogen based roms (I am 99% sure of this)
*If this still does not work, clear data again>>>do not open Rom manager but turn off phone>>>go to recovery (via 3-button combo)>>>Backup/restore>>>backup
If that does not work then Reflash your kernal as you did before, or any other kernal that you want that is compatible with stock roms. You will probably need Odin flashable kernals as your CWM is not working. You can try flash the kernal via rom manager, not sure what the result of this would be if CWM is not being installed properly. Instructions for installing the kernal will be from where ever you download the kernal.
So all the above should enable you to bypass Rom manager for the backup, or fix the backup/recovery which should fix the rom manager backup/compatibility whatever issues, Hopefully

What do you mean the phone runs fine?? Did it ever boot up properly, as in get you to the home screen??
Have you tried reflashing the rom via recovery as you said it works...
If you use ADB you should be able to transfer back and forth, but there is a fairly long winded process to set it all up! However after this it should be easy..
If that doesn't work restore your backup which you should always make before flashing! (Im guessing your in this situation because you didn't do that? )
So if you don't have a back-up get an odin flashable rom either from stock firmware on sammobile.com or from the general forum where Ramad has made an extensive collection. Also you could flash DarkyROM 10.2 RE Odin ROM which is a custom rom and odin flashable..
I have heard frm sumwhere that we have to apply some update.zip two time to make cwm recovery working on sgs. Is it true ?

Have not heard of this... Sometimes you do have to flash roms twice that have kernals to avoid problems which may be what you are talking about. All custom kernals use CWM as it has many extra features. If you follow the instructions of the rom/kernal you should never have any problems.

It should work, possibly its a problem with the kernal I'm not sure. But I can say that every time i have installed and used Rom manager (I dont usually use it, so i uninstall it ) I have had to re-install CWM. What happens is i get a popup telling me to install the latest CWM, I then have to pick my device, I do so and then the pop up just disappears and all downloads are available to me. So in my case it doesn't even look like it installs anything as it doesn't reboot etc.
Soooo the answer is that it will probably tell you that you need to install the latest CWM, so just follow the prompts and if it installs the latest then great. Hopefully it will work after this. If it doesn't you may have to try a more recent kernal. If that still doesn't work, then use Odin to flash a rom.
Odin flashable custom rom that usually never fails for anyone This rom is usually recommended to people with problems. After this you should have CWM and be able to use Rom manager like it should be used

Why are you so attached to rom manager?? You think its safe? Probably agree but you may have to dump it for the first flash and then get back to it once you can get it working.. If changing kernals doesn't work then it may be your stock rom, and to change will either have to be odin or a zip via recovery...
Hopefully all goes well, Good Luck
REALISATION...
This is all because you cannot get a backup... If the above does not work then forget the backup and just flash the rom via rom manager. Because even if you have the backup you wont be able to use it as you don't have a CWM recovery right??
The apps i use for backup
App list backup
Sms backup and restore

Was running the note on ParanoidAndroid v 0.5. Everything was fine. I had gotten PA v0.5 by flashing stock GB, used CF-Root with CWM to root the phone and get custom recovery. After this flashed PA 0.5 onto the Note. No kernels etc have been changed. Before flashing PA 0.5 i had taken a nandroid backup of the stock rooted GB with CWM recovery.
Fast forward to today..
I wanted to take something off my old nandroid backup so i rebooted into recovery took a backup of the current setup.. Backup successful.. After this i rebooted into recovery and restored the old nandroid backup.. This was also successful.. I booted into the phone, exported the data that i wanted and used the restore option available in the CWM recovery application that comes as part of the CF-Root package.. The phone rebooted into recovery.. Was at verfiying MD5 stage.. And then suddenly everything goes blank and the phone went into a boot loop.. It just stays at the screen where It says Galaxy Note GT-N7000.. Tried rebooting into download/recovery etc.. Nothing works.. Just coming back to the same splash screen..
I have not wiped the note on any unsafe kernel.. I'm sure about that.. Please help!:crying:
Try to boot into stock recovery and use pc-odin to flash a stock GB
Try to get in download mode....and please flash gb rom.
I would suggest pre-rooted gb rom.
And if you cant get in download mode or in recovery mode....then it is soft brick.....
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
actually try wipingcache and dalvik first from safe kernel recovery.
after that if the nandroid you restore is ics and kernel is cm or aokp you need to flash an ics kernel inbetween.
Make sure to fkash when restoring pa you have same kernel you made nandroid with.
First things first, thanks to all of you for your replies.. I backtracked on my steps and i had done *some* mistake with the steps that i followed..
People who want to know the result: Problem solved! Yay!
Here's what i had done..
I went back to GB nandroid backup from a 5.5.x.x CWM based recovery (worked fine - as expected)
The GB nandroid backup had a 5.3.x.x CWM based recovery. So my mistake was trying to restore a backup, which was taken with a newer CWM based recovery, using the older 5.3.x.x recovery.. This is where it failed..
Luckily i somehow got into download mode, flashed stock GB and rooted it using the zergrush exploit, flashed CF-Root kernel with a CWM based recovery, booted into it, flashed PA v0.5.
Then after this, rebooted into recovery of PA v0.5 and restored the nandroid backup of PA v0.5..
Voila! It worked :victory:
After upgrading my phone to CM 10 and installing ROM Manager 5.0.2.1 (which
includes Clockworkmod Recovery 6.0.1.2), I had a problem in that nothing could be
installed because the SD card was not being mounted.
There was no way of downgrading Clockworkmod Recovery because nothing would
get installed.
After numerous methods, I solved this by paying for the premium version of ROM Manager.
Once that was done, I got the option of reverting back to an earlier version of Clockworkmod Recovery from
within ROM Manager. I chose (arbitrarily) version 5.0.0.0 and now the problem has gone away.

Weird, I did the same with the free version, downgraded to 5.2.something (that I had working before) and its working correctly.
In summary: DO NOT INSTALL THE v6, usb mounting does not work... yet
CWM 6 working ok for me.I can install roms etc , but I can't mount SD to use on PC
But if you're making a backup on CWM6 and you want to restore on CWM5 it won't work. The backups in CWM6 are a lot smaller and diferent from previous vers

Actually, you can change the way that CWM recovery backs up your system so in fact maybe by changing the back up method, you can restore CWM6 back ups on CWM5. This includes difference compression methods, file type, etc
Just FYI, you don't have to buy Rom Manager Premium to downgrade your recovery image. The 'free' way would be to inject it into a kdz file and extract AP and CP binaries then flash with SFT.

Hi
My CWM won't backup anymore, what i do is: I just select back-up, from rom-manager or in CWM, and it does everything it is supposed to do while backuping. Then, when its finished and i reboot, there is a backup, but its only around 30 mb, And when i try to restore it, it says MD5 keys don't match.
Since I want to flash P.A.C. man i kinda really really want this to work.
Any suggestions or sollutions??
Did you try to re-flash recovery? If this does not work I would recommend NV Restore (an ICS stock maybe???)
in rom manager, flash older recovery (5.0.2.0) not the newest. .
boot to cwm, backup... it should work (i had the same issue a few times and older recovery fixed it)
I tried an upgrade to C-ROM with its TWRP backup. I want to go back to CM11 and I have two CWM backups.
C-ROM grabs a reboot to Recovery and shows a screen with options, none of which is useful to me.
ROM manager won't install as incompatible.
Please tell me what to do?
Richard
Flash CM11 nightly and after reboot into the OS, reboot recovery and restore your backup. Optionally, you can just flash the CM11 stock kernel and reboot into its CWM recovery and restore your backup then.
Recovery on i9000 is part of the kernel, so you can totally forget ROM Manager app for flashing the recovery.

Hi tetapetak
I get trapped in the TWRP menu screen whenever I try to boot into Recovery. I tried Install and went to the CM zip file and was able to get to the com folder but didn't know where to go next. Should I go deeper.
While browsing I found an app called Flashify. Would that help"
I also found a youtube video Change Custom Recovery from TWRP to ClockworkMod on HTC One that sounded good but Galaxy and HTC are different.
I would have to chose between TWRP for Samsung Galaxy S2 Exhilarate SGH-i577 or TWRP for Samsung Galaxy S3 (Canada) if I wanted to follow the directions.

Don't worry mate, you will get your phone working. You can not follow the threads for other phones. HTC has separately flashable recovery, unlike the i9000 which uses the same partition for recovery and kernel. That is the reason why i9000 gets easier light-bricked, because as soon as the kernel doesn't boot also the recovery mode often won't work anymore.
The most reliable way to unbrick, tough bit longer one, is to flash a stock firmware with Odin. For downgrading to 2.3.x from 4.3+ roms using the PIT file with repartition is obligatory. So as you use KitKat (and other system partition sizes than stock) it would be easier and faster to flash just a kernel that will boot.
So, how is the situation exactly now: do you get just TWRP recovery splash screen but can not enter it? If so, please flash in download mode with Odin v.1.82 or v.1.83 the Semaphore kernel v3.4.3 with unchecked auto-reboot and unchecked re-partition (use tar file under PDA in Odin). Then turn off and reboot into the recovery with 3-buttons combo.
You will possibly can restore whole CM11 backup with Semaphore recovery if you have used CM11 stock kernel to create backup. I am not sure for that, but what would ceirtanly work would be to wipe data, cache, dalvik cache and system, to flash CM11 nightly and then reboot once into the OS and reboot recovery to restore nandroid backup.

I did this and when Odin said it was a success, the phone said it was still working. I gave up after 15 min. and tried the booting. A recovery boot or normal boot just gives me the Samsung page. The download boot gives me the still working screen. So phone still thinks it is downloading. I should mention that I was unable to get in to developer mode using tap 7 times. I read that developer mode is important with Odin

Things are going well, not perfect but well. That sticking is download position was not a problem. You just have to download something else that will complete. To use Odin (Kies didn't work) I needed a tar of a system. I tried a Samsung JB that I found on SamMobile, using Odin. It loaded are booted when complete. Got the Samsung screen and those wavy lines with music but nothing more. Tried the Recover button trick and it worked. So the phone is fixed except for picking up a tar to start and then I can recover a CM11 backup of mine.
I think I need a KK tar to get the CM11 backups to work. I did try restoring one and got an error saying that "this package is for "galaxys2.i9100 .." devices; this one is a "", There was nothing between the quotes. The tar system I used was a JB so that may be the problem.
So all I need to know of a KK tar or I could try changing the tar to a zip to please Odin.
Thanks again for your help tetapetak
