Gauntlet Patriot Node - Nexus 10 Accessories

Hey people!
I have a Nexus 10 and I just ordered a Nexus 4, but the only thing that had been putting me off of it is the 16gb storage limit. I want to use my phone as an mp3 player and I want to use it in the metro, so no internet streaming possibilities.
I've been looking for solutions for a while and I found one, and since the N10 has a limited storage as well, I figured I'd share it
I bought a Gauntlet Patriot Node last week and received it today. (Note: I'm not affiliated with them in any way ) and I was wondering if I could use it as an extension to my tablet's storage. Basically, it's a hard drive enclosure that converts a 2.5'' drive into a battery-powered wi-fi hard drive.
Long story short, yes.
The app it comes with is pretty average, it lets you look at the files and everything, but it doesn't allow you to create playlists/listen to songs one at a time, so if you want to listen to music, you have to pick an individual song and then pick another one once it's done.
However, I ended up setting up ES File Explorer's LAN capabilities to use it with the node. I can now explore the node folders with it. Furthermore, ES' music player works great, and I can easily select one folder and make ES play it all, shuffle the stuff, etc.
Now, I know it's not the best solution ever and it's quite pricey, but I know the limited storage has been quite a pain for me, and I am probably not the only one. Such a device makes it really easy to expand storage and to move around with said expanded storage.
I also know I haven't been able to find much information when I looked for it, so I'd be glad to help anyone who has some!

Very true, should've thought about it. I cannot post any links however, as I don't have 10 posts yet
It's quite a small device, I'm guessing it's around the size of a 5'' phone, but it's around an inch thick.
The device cost me 95$ on Newegg.ca, and I got a 320 WD hard drive with it for 50 bucks.
Seagate has a mobile wifi hard drive as well, but it's priced at 200$, and some other brands do them as well but they're quite expensive. The node seemed like the cheapest way to me.

I'm looking at the Ravpower, I hadn't seen it. Though as far as I can see, it takes SD cards as memory?
I'll be posting more as I get more use out of my node, I only got it today, so I obviously am still in the honeymoon phase. I should be receiving my nexus 4 tomorrow, so I'll be able to take it for a ride as well (though I'm scared of leaving the house with the n4 without a cover, which should be delivered on the 18th...)
I'm really fond of the fact I can put a hard drive of up to 2tb in the device though. Obviously, I'll never use that much, but it's a great idea.
My main gripe with it is that it can't connect to a hidden wi-fi, so I can't connect to our home's through it. Not that big of a deal though, as I mean to use it as an extension on the road anyways.

It's smaller as well, so I'm sure to many it would be more practical. Also, the ability to use an SD card or a flash drive is great, I can already see the music jump because my hard drive bounced in my bag.
Oh well, nothing's perfect :victory:
By the way, it took me a long time to figure out how to set my drive to work the way I wanted it to, and I just realized that while looking online, the article that gave me the idea to try ES file explorer came from you, I had read your thread without realizing it. So thanks for that

I have not used it out yet, my brother didn't wake up when the UPS dude came home, so I won't be getting my N4 before tomorrow. Since my galaxy W has an SD card, I am still using it, so I can't confirm the battery time, nor how different parameters (connecting to wifi through it, for example) affect it. The specs sheet says 5.5 hours, however, and the cables are quite easy to carry around.

Not in Canada, sadly Great to know however, if anyone's interested in it.
I've played with it a bit more today, and it is really slow if you want to play with the files on it via the wifi. However, with an usb 3.0 cable, it's as fast as you'd expect.

I just purchased the Seagate Wireless Plus from Best Buy for $199.99 (seems to be the same price on Amazon, B&H or wherever you buy it). It's USB 3.0, just a little bigger than the typical portable, and has a 1TB SATA drive. It sets up its own wifi hotspot that you can connect to with any wifi-enabled device (Android, IOS, Windows, Mac). There's a downloadable app for Android and IOS to access the drive, and Windows and Mac use a browser. It's capable of multi-user streaming--3 users can stream their own movies at the same time. It claims up to 10 hours battery life, but, of course, that depends on what it's being used for, and how many people are using it at once. I've only tested it very briefly, but I was able to connect a Nexus 4, Nexus 10, Transformer Infinity, Surface RT, Windows 8 desktop and Windows 8 laptop. It worked well over a distance of about 25-30 feet (it may have a greater range, but I didn't test it for maximum range)
Edit: it has a pass-through so that you can connect to the drive and the internet at the same time.

Is it at all possible to connect to it through the likes of ES file explorer as it appears can be done with the node, or does it HAVE to be via their own app? The seagate plus does tempt me but the deal breaker is it's inability to stream most of the mainstream video formats. Without the ablity to stream them, and being forced to copy them across to the device, the seagate plus is useless to me.
I am once again tempted by the node, battery life is not too important to me, as i don't take it outside with me that much and tend to have a wall plug available, but i like the notion of using it with ES.
The ravpower holds no interest to me. If it had a harddrive built into the thing it would, but i want just a single box that does it all, SD and flash card is irrelevent to me as well seeing as i have an OTG cable.

Otg can power portable hard drives too.... Then shouldn't the node and Seagate units be useless also?

The Ravpower is actually a very sensible option. It's cheaper and it holds flash data. If you're on a trip, every time the hard drive will bounce, so will the data on the screen. It's also much smaller.
It's a matter of portability VS capacity

An otg cable is attatched by a cable, hence the name, and i do not really like even having my otg cable hanging off the tablet due to potential damage to the por. The node or seagate are wireless. Very different things. It also means that the tablet itself is powering the harddrive, and while i do not know any figures, i assume that powering a harddrive uses more battery than streaming something over wifi. I could be wrong on that. Furthermore a portable harddrive cannot easily be connected to two or more devices on different sides of the room at the same time.

If i were to use the ravpower it would not be with a flash drive. I already have a 32gb flashdrive that can plug into my tablet. If i were to use the ravpower it would be for a 1tb harddrive, in which case i would still experience this "bounce", although i've never in the past experienced this bounce when using a mechanical disk. any travelling i do that would see me using my tablet is on a motorway, or a trainline. There is no bumping around. Plus the ravpower is not much smaller once you have a portable harddrive attached. Then you have two devices that might have to be kept in bay by say rubber banding them together, and you also have a cable from the harddrive to keep at bay. The node or seagate is a simple box. Nothing more. I want things kept simple and clean.
The only appeal the ravpower might hold is as a battery pack, but it is not a significant selling point for me in my situation.
Very simply put, the ravpower does nothing for me, what i want is simply a single box that does it all over wifi.

Then it's between the Gauntlet (either the node or the one with a drive in it) and the Seagate... Though I hear Corsair is coming with something very good. I believe WD launched a wifi unit recently too. It's still a very early technology and is far from optimal, but as it develops, I'm sure we'll get some amazing results in the next years.

The Seagate will stream whatever video formats you put on it; it's basically just a regular NTFS hard drive. The only limitation as to formats rests entirely on the device you're streaming to. If, for example, you're streaming a .mov file to a device that does not natively support .mov, then it won't play, at least not without a third-party app.

Hmm. I have just read a lot of controversial stuff about the wireless plus and the goflex satelite
"The app on both iOS and Android look virtually identical. It features media players for Mp4 movies and music files. As long as you have your files in this format, things are golden. Fighting me tooth and nail, the player would not run my .avi, divx ot .mkv files."
so this inability to play avi files is due to the nexus not being able to natively play avi files and not the seagate device itself? I have close to 2000 films backed up as 700mb avi's, hence why i'm still looking around for something that suits my needs.

It plays .avi and mkv files on the Nexus 10 with no problem. Just load them onto the drive from your computer, log on to the Seagate wifi hotspot and then access the movies using the Seagate app. As far as I know, the app does nothing more than access whatever is on the drive and streams it to your device; after that, it's up to the device's capabilities..

Seems like a decent price, even though the device could use a better screen, bluetooth, and hdmi out. I grabbed a rain check while I think about a possible new toy...
Saw this on Engadget yesterday. The thing doesn't do portrait mode, doesn't have an accelerometer, and almost all signs point to the touch screen being resistive rather than capacitive. Still, for $150 I could slap some velcro on the back and on my cabinets and use it to follow recipes when cooking.

Huh. I spoke with tech support yesterday and they said it didn't support portrait. But we were also talking about the lack of an accelerometer so they might have just meant it didn't automatically flip.
Well I talked to them again today, and I dont get the warm and fuzzy feeling about the answers, but here is what "Ari" had to say:
Ari: unit has options for a prtrait and mode
Ari: headphone jack should be 3.5mm
Ari: unit has a camera
Ari: it has a usb slot for file transfers
Ari: 800mgz for prcessors
Ari: it should be able to charge with the usb also
Ari: it should have a calibrate command also
Ari: and program similar for the android market
Ari: it is using an android 2.1 program
Ari: i apologize this is just a new device and not all program alternatives and specifications has not fully been established
Ari: it is supposed to be out end of the week
Ari: and by august

They're just reselling the hardware I'm guessing. No way a Florida company could make this cheaper than China can.
over all i like the device. im used to a resistive screen so thats not a problem. doesnt appear to have the auto rotate screen but waiting to hear back from them to find out what the deal is. the manual talks about auto rotating the screen so it should have it. lack of bluetooth is another draw back but i really dont need it. they also have a 2.5mm headphone jack on them instead of a 3.5 like normal but they are addressing that with an adapter i do believe.
power consumption wasnt too bad. i was using the device for 5 hours yesterday and only used a 1/4 reserve from what it said. so i was only down to around 72% charge after playing with it for 5 hours. was reasonably bright enough in a brightly lit room. the angle one can see is pretty good as well.
the microsd card slot isnt in line properly. so if you insert a card you will want to put a price of tape on the end of it so when you release it you can pull it out. i played hell getting the thing to pull out and it was dragging the top of the card so had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it out.
cant access the market yet so havent tried the nook or kindle apps but that will be my next thing. looking at pictures was good. just as good as my digi pic frame.
over all for what i bought it for i do believe it will work a treat. i was going to buy a chumby either the bb or the sony branded chumby and this will work so much better then either of those two devices.
mistakes happen. how do people forget to take thier vitamins in the morning? how do people forget there coffee mug on the roof of thier car?

Well, that's good to hear. Really all I'd ever want one for is reading in bed, surfing the web while on the couch and most importantly, following recipes online without having to print them. Velcro that thing to the cabinet and we're golden.
Can you post some pics of the device from different angles? I'm curious how thick it is and where the ports are.
Seems my local store has a few in stock here, so I'm swinging by on my way home to grab one. Ill report back what I can about the device later tonight or tomorrow morning. Supposed firmware update released tomorrow.

HDMI cable?

Cab anyone recommend a UK sourced HDMI cable which can be used with the special USB slot in the Nook Colour please? Thinking of getting Netflix
From what I recall, previous discussions pretty much ended with
"not possible"
If someone can correct me I'd be extremely pleased.
Nope, Nook doesn't have the hardware to support it.
Sent from space
Yea, I don't think that's possible, plus the nook is pretty slow when it comes to netflix anyway, just HDMI connect a laptop if you have one, or game console. I would recommend a Dynex wire, cheap, but I've had 4 for the last two months for all of my hd consoles and tv's, no problems and exceptional video quality.
Newegg has cheap HDMI cables too.

Yeah, I wanted to try this awhile back. Here are some links I found looking into the topic;

https://sites.google.com/site/voyageofbeagleboard/Home/displaylink-for-android
http://sven.killig.de/android/N1/2.2/usb_host/
Essentially, it looks like there is a way to get android to write the framebuffer to the USB port, and some converters to get that out as a display, but I do not have anywhere near the skills to get it working and the adapters were prohibitively expensive for the gain.
My verdict is; Possible, but very unlikely.
You could get a Raspberry Pi and connect it to your Nook (or any tablet without HDMI) through WiFi. At only $35 or so (assuming you already have a WiFi router to plug it into), it's a very affordable solution. The software side would be tricky. I suppose you could just install Linux and a VNC server on the Raspberry Pi...

They make these things called Micro USB to USB adapters. As long it has Host support (which devs can most certainly add) you are all set.
So stop worrying and buy the 8GB model
EDIT: Once you get your Nexus, please post a review of YOUR USB-OTG setup so that we can have a quick reference to know which products work and which don't.

Nah. I'll make do with the tablet I have until somebody wants to sell me the tablet I want. I'm hoping Asus will still sell their 7" tablet instead of throwing all that business to Google.
I know someone who has a massive music collection - almost 500GB in size - and, whilst he likes the looks of tablets, he cannot find one that would allow him to comfortably store even a fraction of his music on. If he were to buy a Micro-USB to USB adapter, could he then connect his hard-drive into the Nexus 7 (or any other Android device for that matter) and listen to his music off there?

An original 7" Galaxy Tab.
Being able to hook up an external HDD is great, but not the most practical thing to do on the go. Seems kind of silly to have to take out a hard drive on a short bus/train ride or something, but I suppose it's better than nothing.
Anyone else thought of some cool ways to maximize storage space?

1) There is the cloud. 20,000 songs is no laughing matter. And on a short bus ride is ample.
2) You can store a few of your favorite albums ON the tablet. For emergency, no data use.
3) Use the Storage method while at home or during long trips.
You can easily expand with micro USB sticks which you can't even notice plus they cheaper and you get more storage

Because that worked out so well for the Kindle Fire. Oh wait, it didn't, because the USB port is 3.3V and needs an external power source for host mode.
I'm going to wait and see if the Nexus 7 has proper USB OTG support before I even think about getting one.

did you really just say one should use an extern hdd for storage?!
first we would need to check the power level and then if it really would work who in the right mind would carry around a hdd all the time
the nexus 7 will fit in my jacket pocket most male people will not carry around a purse.
if i am at home me and most people will use a network drive.
i don't think i will need more than 16gb but we don't need to defend googles poor decission to not offer more space we are no apple fan boys and storage is mad cheap.
Not a huge concern for me...just a minor inconvenience. I think I'll opt for 16GB model for only $50 more.

do you have a link for a micro USB stick?
Doesn't the micro USB operating in host mode suck down the battery (assuming that it has the appropriate power coming in...many that support this don't!)
As far as a portable hdd being too big, use a flash drive. I've seen 32 gb ones for around $30, with 64 gb not being too much higher. Of course, that only works if you don't have to have a powered hub.
Why is it so hard for Google to put in an SD Card slot?

Question about this guys. So, assuming I load a few movies on a USB drive, I should be able to plug it into the tablet (via a micro USB-USB connector) and play the movies straight off the drive?
I only ask because I have been wanting this thing for a while, and loading 4-5 movies on it was going to be a huge plus, but 16GB is really cutting it close.
But if all I have to do is plug in a USB drive....I think I would be OK with that.

the price point and size, you cant get everything for $200, if you require an sd card get a galaxy tab 7 2, they charge 50 more for a dual core cpu and worse screen but include a sd card slot

Not hard at all. They clearly don't want to.
Tab 2 is crap. I have a Tab 7.7 but still stuck on Honeycomb. Screen is most important to me and Tab 2 is crap. I want pure Google. Google refuse to put in sd slots because they think the cloud is so great. It's not. Right now I have 76gb of music and movies on my Tab.

I think we're going to wait to hear from one of the guys that actually got their hands on one...I couldn't imagine why they would run the power (I think it's 5v instead of 3.3v, but don't quote me) to the micro-usb, but stranger things have happened. If they DIDN'T for some reason, then you'd be able to, but only with a powered USB hub, so it would be a little inconvenient to lug around.
I agree though. If I can hook in a flash drive without the extra power, then I'm good to go, and will be picking one up ASAP.

you get what you pay for its that simple, you my friend have a dilemma so chose your priorities (pure google or micro sd clot) and pick your poison. Google had a price point and they did what they had to do to stick to it, so yes while It may only be a $5 addition, google has small enough profit margins as it is considering the kindle fire is sold at a loss and this has much more expensive hardware. So, I wouldn't expect google to take more than a 5% loss on this tablet, this is a business after all

Ok so whats your honest opinion of the chromcast

So wondering what you all think of your chromcasts, I like mine but I can't say its the best thing ever. It feels almost useless. Now don't get me wrong, what it does do, it does extremely well and ts my favorite way of watching youtube but it doesn't do much.
I mean there are just so many devices that can stream youtube and netflix. And both youtube and netflix could already be controlled remotely way before the chromecast. The only thing its super useful for is for those who invested a lot of money in google play music and movies and I personally havn't due to their prices usually being more.
Then again it was only $43 after shipping and taxes and it should have plenty more features on the way I hope. Hopefully google will finish the sdk soon and we can get some real use out of it. Though its hard to justify buying something on what it might do in the future.
I guess I don't regret buying it, but its hard to recommend it to someone right now.
How do you all feel about it?
I love mine, but I only paid $35 (amazon free shipping, and no tax where I live), and I got the three months free Netflix (already a member).
I have a Vizio smart TV, and the Netflix app is bad. It hasn't been updated in three years. Cannot enable closed captions. Cannot view all episodes for a TV series with more than 100 episodes. Plus, it's slow. So the Chromecast was an easy way to upgrade my Netflix experience.
I was going to use it to stream local stuff to my TV, but instead I just hooked up my computer directly to the TV and set up plex for other TVs.
I would like to see being able to cast the browser from a phone. Plus support for plex or other DLNA streaming would be nice.
At $43, it's too close to $55 for a Roku XS, personally. I don't see it as a Roku or Apple TV competitor. Nor, in its current state, a replacement for either or them. But, I think it's a much better play at getting to TV service than the Q was. I'm interested to see what Google does with it in the next year.

I pretty much agree with you on all points. For about 6 years i have had a HTPC hooked up to our main home TV screen. With a wireless keyboard attached, it does pretty much everything that chromecast/roku/internet tv's/xbox 360/etc will do and more. I have been a XBMC user since back in the softmodded xbox 1 days. I switched to my HTPC when high def video releases became more common and I needed more horsepower.
Using my tablet to browse and cast youtube videos has been pretty fun. Chromecast caused me to take the time to get my tablet (iconia a500) on a updated and stable ROM. I had been ignoring it for some time and the previous rom I had was crashy and frustrating.
Mostly, i bought Chromecast because i believe the dev community will eventually do some fun stuff with it.
Chromecast was next to free when i bought it since I got the netflix deal. I wish I would have bought at least 10 more. they seem to be going for double on Seattle Craigslist.

I like mine a lot. But, then, i like my Toast-r-Oven a lot also. Is my Toast-r-Oven the same as a full sized oven? No. Is it the same as a microwave oven? No. But that doesn't mean that I won't have all three and use them differently.
The best feature about the Chromecast is that it's literally plug and play. Type in a wifi password and you're done. About as easy a technology product to use that I've ever seen. This will make it a big hit. I would have no problem giving this to any friend that knows absolutely nothing about technology.
I've used an HTPC as my primary mode of content delivery for years and I've been always searching for a better way to completely eliminate the need for a mouse/kb. My remote and tablet both fully XBMC for all the things I download. But my other big source of content has been Netflix, for which there has been no good way to access without using a mouse at the very least. That's been a big annoyance to me for some time, so being able to fully control Netflix, while getting the highest HD and 5.1 stream possible, has been huge.
I'm hoping that HBO Go will be implemented soon. Hopefully the Xfinity will get support, as well. I'm not going to hold my breath, but maybe someday Amazon will finally release a true Android app and they'll put in Chromecast support. I'm looking forward to the expansion of content, but for me, just putting the control of Netflix onto my tablet has made the product a winner.

Off the main subject, but...
Have you tried the gmote app? it sort of accomplishes the same thing as turning your tablet or android phone into a touchpad. You have to run a little server app on the HTPC though.
Another workaround I came up with is to used a wireless keyboard with a mouse (roller ball or touchpad) built in. These are no good for gaming, bit they are a little handier than a separate mouse and keyboard. I have tried both of these and they have been decent.

Apple TV (version 3) and Roku 3 are both 1080p and have on-screen browsing, which is obviously better than dinking around with a tablet. And they are only $100, so there is no barrier to just getting one.
I have a htpc, too, and it sits now. It's just too much easier and better to browse with a remote.

To those using XBMC get yatse. Its a remote for XBMC and you can "share" youtube vids with your XBMC from your phone or tablet
It's very hit or miss.... Having an HDMI to your PC is way better. And cheaper. Maybe once hackers fix all the ludicrous functionality gaffs..... My advice: wait to buy till it's useful.

It's by far the best netflix streaming experience I've had.
It looks great in 1080p, and I don't have to use yet another remote control to navigate a clunky interface from 10 feet away.
I'm very pleased with it and it will only get better as more developers add support to their applications.
Right now... Not worth $35, however long term once we get Pandora, HBO go, etc support. Then I believe it will be a perfect media device. Am I disappointed with mine? No. Do I use it often? Yes. My only gripe is the lack of app support and some bugginess when streaming from chrome.

The way they showed it work on Google's press conference. It was almost instant mine doesn't work like that. It sometimes takes a little while to load. And it seems to slow down the netflix app on my phone. Anyone else experience this?

I'm with you guys. I have a Mac Mini running XBMC and after that kind of an experience, this is a pretty big let down. I have been eyeing an Ouya running XBMC for a while now, and I was hoping to have that modded onto this, but I don't think that's going to happen now.
Furthermore, format support is really not there for such a single purpose device, it no doubt has the horsepower to decode more. I was hopeful when I found I could stream stuff directly to it without some sort of transcoding, but instantly disappointed with no AC3 audio, which is a bit of a deal breaker.
Yatse on my Android phone with some sort of XBMC remote is a lot more up my alley. I suppose this is nice for Netflix, which I can't get on there, but I have an XBox currently capable of doing it.
One last thing, my Chromecast interferes with my over the air signal. I don't know why or how, but if that sucker is plugged in anywhere close to my TV, no over the air channels receive at all. Mind you, I already have plenty of wifi, bluetooth, and other wireless gadgets over there.
Waiting for more dev support
I have Logitech Revue (which is just awesome since I got it for 99bucks). I love that it has physical keyboard, and plays everything that Chromecast does and more and has better controls (thanks to the keyboard). Also,Chromecast currently does not support live streaming on youtube, which sucks. The main reason I purchased it was I got 3 months free Netflix (which I am a member anyway) and the possible dev support in future. I pretty much knew what I was buying, so did not have any more expectations.
Am ok with it
its not the jesus streamer but it covers 97% of what i would like it to do. Changing to mp4 isn't deal breaker. streams well enough from youtube and excellently from netflix. hopfully more to come
I have mine connected to our office TV (second of 2 TVs in our house). That TV does not have a cable box connected to it because we could not justify the cost of the cable box for the limited amount that we would use it. I did get a Roku 3 for that TV but returned it the day before Chromecast was announced because it was having trouble staying connected to our network. Chromecast does exactly what I want it do do. I can start streams from any of our devices and and I have had no issues (other than a minor installation hiccup). I would like other services to work with it like HBO Go and MLB.TV, but those should be coming and I am content for now. There are a lot of little things that could be improved to make this an exceptional product, but it is still a very god product as it presently stands.
Actually no, onscreen controls are NOT obviously better than dinking around with a tablet.
everyone needs to wake up, a roku is triple the price of this thing, you can't buy a ipod or hell a watch that can do any of what this can do for 35.00. in a simple term this is a Netflix/youtube streamer. routers, modems, download speeds are all going to impact things. I have a Roku 2 XS , Roku is clunky and unpolished. I don't care who you are but Roku is no speed demon, it does a ok job at 50 bucks I got on a accomidation. Chromecast is working for me like the demo. I have a beefed up Asus router, I'm about 4 feet from my router with my tv and I run Cat 6 across all my connections. Chrome cast is fast and snappy. My setup was smooth too. Everyone is going to have a different experience. The only thing close to this is a raspberry PI. at 35.00 I may want the Pi for other things but for playing my content you won't find any streamer with the hardware or Dev support community this little device has. It's one of a kind whether you choose to accept that or not. a plex plugin is in the works also. It's all simple I can buy a 200 dollar nexus 7 or a 330 dollar ipad mini. build quality will be a bit better on the ipad the camera sharper. and more accessories and gadgets. so why to I get the nexus 7? because anyone can buy a ipad if you had the money and 2 the open experience. I can't crack open roku and flash a new OS. with chromecast it's endless since chrome browser can have anything built on it making it your own.
Mine works fine out the box, no issues. I can't see how anyone can complain about the out-the-box features. It IS lacking features, which is why I wasn't gonna buy one. But once I realized the possibilities and the fact that it was only around eleven dollars after the Netflix promo, I snapped one up on faith that Google would open it up to things like what Koush is doing. But even if that never happens, I can't complain. I'm still left with a painless way to use services on my TV that I use everyday.
Long story short, if you have real issues getting to work, your complaints are valid. But if you bought one and you're unsatisfied with the features, you have no one to blame but yourself.
I have an old TV & stereo in my garage / workshop that I wanted to project to from my phone, mainly for the Google Play Music app. I used to use an Airport Express but switched to Android so that was no longer an option. For me, Chromecast is awesome. I had to get an adapter to connect the audio to the stereo, but the Chromecast + Adapter was still cheaper than the Airport Express was. I was looking for something similar to Airplay and for me this was by far the best option. No, it's not an HTPC or even a Roku, but if you realize it's a dumb stick aimed at people who have no idea what anyvody on XDA is talking about, it's a great little device.

Charging + USB OTG

I'm planning a trip this November and seeing how I'm not going to have internet connection on the plane is it possible to charge my nexus 6/9 WHILE using a external hdd over usb otg? Or at the very least provide enough power to keep it from dying on me even if it doesn't charge it?
I think you'd need a custom kernel to allow that. I don't know if any have this feature built in.
What airlines are you taking that doesn't have internet? You could bring a 10000 mAh charger pack with you but I know of no way to chain them together with a USB extension. Worst case, you'll have to read or otherwise occupy yourself like we did for the ten thousand years of human society before the cell phone was invented. [emoji6]

There will be internet, but I'm not sure I'm willing to pay for it since it's most likely going to be slow internet to be honest. And Delta/United are the two I'm looking at to go to Cali.
I couldn't get a small usb hub and have it work that way? I'm assuming no because it won't receive enough power. My whole goal is to download some of my most listened to google music stuff to the external hard drive since I've not actually stored a single song since I bought google music along with movies, etc.
You just reminded me of the 10k mAH battery pack, wonder if droid-life has some deals on one again.
why not just download all the music you want to bring with you to your phone? even 10 gigabytes is a lot of music. unless you're really pushing your storage capacity already

No its blocked at kernel level. You can't even qi charge whilst USB is in use.
What's the actual reasoning behind blocking that at the kernel level though.
hate to bump this old thread... but are there currently any kernels that support Charging + OTG?
I'm also looking for any info re: OTG + Charging on the Nexus 6
I'm trying to move away from my Nexus 7 based car installation to using my Nexus 6 for navigation & music, but as it currently stands I can either charge my phone or use my DAC which is less than ideal on long journeys.
Is OTG + charging hard to implement? After using the Nexus 7 I thought it would be a fairly common kernel mod which lots of people would make use of given the rise in use of USB peripherals such as DACs & hard drives etc
Bump number 2. I have scowered the internet and XDA. I can't find a kernel anywhere that supports OTG+charging. A couple of websites say elementalx does, but alas it is not an option in the elementalx kernel manager. Guessing it was only an option for the 7, and the websites just copied it. Anyone else find something?

Bump, again. This would help repurpose a lot of old phones I have lying around. Aside from the Timur kernel circa 2021 for the nexus 7 (the dawn of DIY car screens), I have not found anything. And those ROMs are ancient...
