[Q] ROM for good battery backup and stability - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm still on 2.3.6 and I'm looking for a newer ROM, either ICS or JB with good battery backup, stability and smoothness.
Actually if GB battery is better than JB and ICS I just might stick with that.
I'm looking around but I don't see any definite answer and no relevant threads in Q&A section.

I would recommend a Jelly Bean though because it is the latest. But I would highly recommend you to view this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612881

This is not my device, a friend bricked it trying to restore the factory settings and I fixed it with the stock jw9, he asked to update it if I can but he needs the battery to be either the same or better than what he had before, so my question is more of should I stick with GB or go for something newer, he doesn't care for constant updates so a stable rom with good battery is what I want to give him. Even if he did care for updates the i9000 is a tricky device, so far today I used odin half a dozen times just to get back to get to flash from recovery cause half the things I now from owning a HD2, Desire, Desire HD, GS2, One X, Optimus 2x, tf300tg and so on don't work here. And I can't constantly ask him to test it a few days and give it back to me to flash a new rom if the battery is not good enough, or teach him how to do it then spend most of days trying to explain or fix what he did wrong, For example I just flashed C-RoM Mix 4.2.2 and it hang on the Semaphore logo, will use Odin right now to get back to gb, and again odin to flash the recovery kernel and then either flash c-rom again or blackbean or just leave at that as I have to wake up in 5 hours to go to work and explain I couldn't be bothered or the people that actually have the answer point me to the "don't ask questions" thread, I've been around xda for a long time, and for some reason the samsung part of the forum is the one I dislike the most as I find people a little obnoxious, every other forum I've been people are actually helpful and eager to answer in a little more detail like: jb battery life good but not stable, ics battery sucks but never hangs" "try gamerzrom ninja cause it has crazy battery life and awesome ui" or something like that.
Anyway, thanks for the help. Will not ask for help here again.
Can a mod please close this or do I have to pm someone?
(excuse any typos I did, it's getting late here and I'm kinda tired)

Your critisism is rather harsh and rude even considering your situation.
I'd sugggest a GB Rom: moderate battery drain because of fewer tuning options/performance. (My opinion.)
You could try CM 7.2: near stock, stable, GB 2.3.7? at cyanogenmod.org.

AW: [Q] ROM for good battery backup and stability
I would recommend you remics JB. It has touchwiz and 4.2.2. Very smooth for me

I had a long response written but I deleted it cause figured it's not worth it, I guess I am still naive to believe that the courtesy I extend to others when they need something and the courtesy I have been extended to every time I am in need in the past around here is a given, apparently that is not the case every time, I want to, and I will honestly, thank you for your answers, as I have the first user that responded to my question, even with the "don't ask" response.
So have a nice day (it's morning here) and thank you again.

[Q] CM or Not? Which one?

Hello everyone,
I've been a fellow follower of the forum since I got my Galaxy S about 4 months ago. It is an amazing phone.
I've tried CM7 at the beginning, MIUI and several ROMs (currently with Darkys 10.1) and I had always a problem.
With CM7/MIUI the problem is battery life and some incompatibilities like codecs, playing flv files and so on. I am really having problems to know the current state of CM7 cores, mostly about if the battery life is comparable with stock rom.
I really want to try something that is still evolving but stable, that when I want to upgrade I don't have to wipe everything, and that I don't need to spend days to have everything working.
My main concern is battery life when using 3G, now it is simple not enough and the quantity of applications that can be run in background. For GPS I use GPS AIDS and seems to work fine.
So I really want to stick to only one ROM (Darky for me is too slow for updates and I have some issues with it)
EDIT: I am currently testing CM
Thanks!
if you want speed choose MIUI / CM7
If you want battery life Choose something similar to stock
if you want both ............ Tough sh!t lol

U can try Juwe's Rom 5.3 JVR it's fast, stable and has a good battery life.
I was on Darky's 10.2 befor flashing Juwe's 5.3 and i'm happy with it
People say's that S.U.R.F.A.C.E. has a good battery life too, I didn't tried it.

I used CM7 once, but what is so special about it? I only saw speed y the selectable themes. Then I had compatibility and codec issues, also needed to find some driver for the pc to use usb tethering.
I installed juwe over JVH with Darkys but I am getting FC with EDT app and reboots in the browser.... any ideas? Something wrong? I installed it via CMW with Wipe Version.
Also for Tethering you need to copy some script from one folder to another... why the Semaphore Kernel doesn't come with that predefined?
I may try SURFACE as for CM I need to mess with Odin.

One more day in MIUI than in Jetpack?
I really tried Juwe's rom doing all the necessary steps.
But I have a force close error when trying to change the screen delay in settings, also no DPI support as the twLauncher and the browser has some lag.
I think I need another rom.
try this rom called : MilkyS MOD + KERNEL [v1.2]◄ Based on 2.3.4 XXJVR | Odin/CWM | ODEXED!
i had the same issue as u did , and the solutions is ryt above
As I am sure you have realized by now, the reason threads like this very little usefulness is that they almost immediately become Fanboi Fiestas. Each respondent will tell you that their favorite ROM will solve all of your problems and wash your car at the same time.
In the end, the only proper judge of which ROM is best for you will be YOU. You simply need to select a handful of ROMs that seem good to you, and test them out. No advice, no fanboi screed, no feature list can do that job for you.
Reading your posts, I can possibly give you some ideas of what to look for in very broad strokes.
First of all, the battery problem in CM7 is pretty much corrected by recent development. Most users now get about the same battery life as they would on the average Samsung ROM. However, I would NOT suggest you install CM7. If as you say you want to install a single ROM and then be done with it, then CM7 is certainly not for you as updates come every day or two. They don;t NEED to all be installed, but most users do. CM7 is the ROM for those who like to tweak and tune their phones and rewards people who like to experiment and really dig into the nuts and bolts of the OS. Since you say that when you installed CM7 for a little while months ago all you noticed was that it was faster and had lots of pretty themes, and you claim not to have time to even read a thread to learn about a ROM, then CM7 is ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR YOU.
Insanity and MUIU are both ROMs based on CM7 the same way the Samsung ROMs are based on the Samsung android version. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. Insanity is closer to CM7 in look and feel, while MUIU is closed source and by default very much like iOS. Each one has devoted fans, so feel free to try them.
The endless numbers of Samsung ROMs are mainly themed versions of the basic Samsung code, with some kernel tweaks thrown in. You are usually best off choosing the one you like the looks of best, if you choose to go in that direction. Samsung ROM fanbois and devs will usually tell you their ROM is incredibly fast and feature packed, and so much better than anyone else's ROM. Whether that is true or not, take all such claims with a grain of salt.
Go out, download 5 or so roms, read their install instructions carefully, familiarize yourself with ODIN and the three button recovery method...and start exploring.
Good luck.

Hi, Thank you so much for your comment.
I am familiarized with Odin and CMW since I had the phone and I tried so many ROMs when I started. The thing is that now I don't have so much time to read all the posts I only read the first ones with the main info.
Now I will give a try to MilkyS and then I will try CM when I have more time.
I will update you guys on the topic.

These kind of threads are pointless, like was mentioned earlier, each to his own ROM, some that work for some may not work for others, it does`nt make a ROM bad/unstable blah blah, only one way to judge a ROM, try it out then decide, no need for all this prick measuring...just my €1:74..
Ok thr best rom for you is jetpack, its pretty stable and has all features you are looking for with excellent battery life its very easy to install as the developer of that rom has made a simple yo use app. That takes care of all of the simple steps like wipe/no wipe, which kernel, which theme (two themes - basic stock theme or blue cm7 theme) and which modem! Jetpack's latest version which is v3.1 has some problems with tw4 so i advice you to not install v3.1 and wait for v3. 2 which will be there in 1-2 days as said by the developer!

[Q] Which ICS ROM is the most mature to use on a daily basis?

I know that a lot here don't appreciate the "what's the Best ROM" threads but mine raises some important points and genuine questions that I believe the devs here need to take in consideration.
I've went through so many ICS ROMs and found that most don't even include a bugs list to know what works and what doesn't. So I'm directing these questions to you and hope to hear your opinion based on your experience as well as your knowledge of ROMs:
Which ICS based ROM is the most mature among the currently stable ones? Please post any bugs or point to what's not working if you refer to a ROM as a response.
Is it easy to get back to a Gingerbread ROM after flashing an ICS based ROM? Are there any caveats that i should know about before flashing any ICS ROM?
Thank you for your time and I appreciate your help and your opinions about this.
there are threads in the general section. please have a look

I've been using Team Rocket 1.5 and find it surprisingly stable (although, of course, there are problems. Just for a heads up, I would NEVER go back to Gingerbread. The girlfriend has Gingerbread on it and it's just so much snappier, not to mention the compatibility with ICS Applications (like Photoshop!). I'll name the few I have:
1. Toggle wifi via the 15 toggle addon and it will just kind of freeze, can't turn it on or off for a little while
2. Sometimes apps just kind of hang, when that happens just let it sort itself out and usually the phone will respond in about 15 seconds. No biggie to me.
3. I've had a SOD (Sleep of death) where the phone screen won't turn on and you end up powering down the phone; but honestly it only happened when I left Sync on in the background. Whether a coincidence or not. Haven't had it happen since turning that off during the day.
4. When trying to restore a backup I've had to restore the boot of the stock GB rom, then restore the ICS backup. Otherwise you really can't flash anything as the system isn't writable I don't believe.
Coming from the AT&T SGSII ICS ROM, this is BEYOND daily use. I just ordered this device off of Amazon and pretty much opened the package, rooted, and flashed this rom. It's fast, nearly everything works. Just have to deal with a few bugs. I'll let you decide whether or not to try it out, but I'm positive when I say I would NEVER go back. Good luck man!
None yet but for minimal bug disturbance, I'd say team rocket 1.5 is quite usable for daily use.

+1 I've been only on Rocket ROM v1.5, fast, stable and like ranger said, this is beyond daily use... really... no going back to GB as well...
It's so stable that I'm so reluctant to test anything else... no SOD, actually got it once and found out setcpu profile is causing it, uninstall and never had it for the past 5 days....
One thing that is bugging me is that the battery drain for the chinese ICS leak is unpredictable as the kernel is not so "refined" yet, you know what i mean
Now awaiting rocket v1,6 or midnote 2.1 if ever maxicet can get the N7000 kernel leak to work properly...
Should be getting my note tomorrow.
First thing I do is flash ICS after rooting etc...been running it on my nexus s since December and its beautiful.
Just got it on my transformer last week as well and its equally as good.
Any of you guys used midnote 2.0? I seen some vids on YouTube. It seems quite stable.
Any opinions in comparison to other ICS roms out?

I think its the criskelo ics v2 its very smooth without much fc! And telephoning and smsing work!
I have been using Midnote and I love it. I flashed all of the other ICS and they had too much battery drain for my tastes.
Midnote is perfect imo. It flashed perfectly, everything worked from the very start. The battery is amazing. Heavy usage and i charge only overnight. I wiped everything during each part of the process of flashing AND wiped after i let it boot the first time. No sod.no freezing.no nothing but smoothness. It is perfect to me.

Though I have had the odd freeze which lasts about 15 seconds then all works well again. Maybe once a day.
Ummm...
I'm using Midnote for 4 or 5 days
working good, charging it overnight, very view FC's.
Check the time on battery (attached)
* "Viber" doesn't work on it (free calls application), other than this everything is perfect
Also using Midnote and it's working fine. My SMS notifications sound sometimes doesn't work but other than that no complaints. Battery life is amazing and I haven't had any major problems. I had Rocket Rom 1.5 on it but that was giving me a lot of issues. To each his own I suppose might try out some other ones as well still praying that ICS comes out soon

[Q] Rom/Kernel combo for best battery life?

And you can look for the one m using currently in my signature - ICS Stunner !! Blown away by this!
Stunned !! Thanks to Neo !!
Firstly, welcome to the club.
Secondly, take my advice and steer clear of Beta ICS roms until you get your feet wet with Gingerbread stuff. ICS roms are still somewhat wonky (some more than others) and require high maintenance and fixing while GB Roms are rock-solid and easy to manage.
Thirdly, I won't even try to give you a definitive answer to your question, but rather give you some guidelines to help you make an informed decision. So here we go:
There are full GB Roms, i.e. those who are as close as possible to original Sammy version as far as apps are concerned: they contain everything a stock Rom does, and even some more.
Then there are light GB Roms: they have much of the Samsung and carrier crapware removed. Of course, one can always add some of the removed stuff should one need it.
Light GB Roms are
Cassie's XtraLite
Chrack's Small (Chrack is unique because he offers you full, middle and light Rom version)
All other Roms could be cosidered full ones to a greater or lesser extent.
As for the custom kernels, general rule of thumb is
the faster and snappier the kernel, the more battery it consumes, which is only logical.
GB kernels at our disposal:
CF-Root (the closest one to the original Sammy's, just a tiny bit slower than the other ones, but stable and easy on the battery)
AbyssNote (you can overclock it for fantastic performance, but it will cost you some juice)
All other kernels fall somewhere in between these two performance- and battery consumption-wise, and you'll most probably test them all yourself in time
Franco(my GB favourite, but that doesn't mean anything)
SpeedMod
FM Kernel
Hope this helps.
Thanks alot for all the info!! I know all about the ICS roms before I had my atet note I had a gt-i9100. now time to go play!

ROM help

I just put serendipity 6 on my buddys captivate. I don't know anything about the development for this phone so I kinda had to wing it to pick which rom to put on. He was on eclair . He loves it the new.but my question is, any reason to put serendipity 7 on it instead or any other ROM for that matter? I want to give him the best stability and battery with customization. Any help is.appreciated

Sorry, there is no quick answer. ROM selection is a personal preference thing.
However there is a thread on xda comparing roms battery performance. If I remember correctly serendipity was among the top. Fasty was up there too.
I'll look for the link when I get home and edit my post.
Thanks for the reply. I just want to leave him with something that it's stable and if serendipity I'd up there.my job is done.thanks man

I found the thread I had mentioned, but it's old. It has been almost a year since there were any constructive posts. It was full of squabbling, so I won't bring it back to life by posting a link to it. Too bad though, cause the guy who started it had good intentions.
Probably best to let this thread die also. Battery / performance comparison threads seem to get ugly after a while.

this phone is almost three + years old. so many ppl have moved to newer versions. those who still has this phone are moved on to ICS (Ice cream Sand-witch (4.0.4) based ROMs. ICS is fast, stable and good on battery as well.
that's why there is no action on GB based ROMS.
I am on Slim ICS and highly recommend it.
until they get the encryption unsuccessful bug worked out that is a pretty good reason to recommend staying with the gingerbread roms
i suggest you go with gingerbread because it was tested that it has a better battery performance plus the graphics drivers upgraded.

About to get this phone, 100% working JB rom?

I'm thinking about getting this ROM. It's kind of overwhelming considering there seem to be SOO many JB Roms. But are there any that work 100%? They don't outright say in the OPs what works/doesn't work.
100% of what? jb is still evolving, as there is now a second edition/version of jellybean.
my oinion: If you want a good reliable jb rom, then try cm10.0 stable. it is android 4.1.2 and totally good for day to day use.
If you want the later, jb 4.2.1, you can try cm10.1 monthly or nightly build. it is mostly stable.
Well, the AOSP one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013285) is considered the purest JB, but I don't think you'll get any dev to claim that his or her ROM is 100% working. It's intrinsic to the development of ROMs. Developer creates a ROM, tests it as best he can, posts it, users find issues, developer(s) fix issues, test again, post again etc. etc. It is really advisable to read around in the respective threads to see which issues have been found and delt with. I think that all current JB ROMs will cover basic functionality an average user would want, together with a zillion tweaks to stretch the hardware to the limit, be it good battery life, 3d gaming and other features devs and users come up with.
so I say: read around and try some of the different flavours, stick with the one that you prefer..
Works great.

I have used CM7, CM9 and CM10 on the captivate and all worked well, but recently switched to SlimBean 4.2.1 and it is much smoother. With CM10 my battery drained quicker and the phone was often warm when used for a long period(playing games, etc), but I don't have this problem with Slim
