[Q] microphone quality - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My previous phone was a Nexus S and I often used to dictate text messages (my phone typing is excrutiatingly slooow) and 95% of the time I didn't have to edit any of the text.
Just tried dictating a text on my XZ and the text is repeatedly misquoted, every time, barely one word in a sentence of a dozen is correct, is this because of poor microphone pickup?
I've tried various distances between my mouth and phone, speaking faster or slower, just can't get it to work
Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions?
p.s. everything else about the phone is tickety boo

Amazed this post had so many views but no comments, similar or polar
Just for the record, I turned off the microphone noise suppression and the prob seems to be cured
( I dictated this post ) but stranger is that I restored the Mic noise suppression and the voice recognition still works cleanly

I have a complaint regarding microphone quality as well. Coming from the iPhone I commonly would send short audio clips to people, mostly via whatapp. I produce house music so occasionally I'd send little blurbs of my music, etc. Now I wouldn't ever expect the audio that was recorded to sound amazing but the iPhone would do the job and do it well. Audio was actually very clear and crisp.
I just tried this for the first time with my new Sony Xperia Z and I gotta say the quality of the recorded audio is so terrible, some clips you can't even decipher what you are listening to! Even my voice when sending verbal messages, the quality is horrendous.
Has anyone else experienced this? If not could some of you give it a try and listen to your own recordings and report back here. I'm curious if it's a Sony Z issue or just specifically my phone.
I'd appreciate it.
PS - having said all that, using the voice function on the keyboard to dictate text for typing or for use with online searches, Maluuba app for calendar reminders, etc all work great with no problems and excellent understanding of what I am speaking.

I dictate entire emails using voice recognition. Works brilliantly.

Thanks but doesn't really help, as stated in my post, voice to text works great. The problem is using the microphone for recording/playback.

What app are you using to record audio?
There's a few on the play store that allow you to change gain levels that might help.
Anyone tried using a wired Mic yet?
There's some code about it in the kernel but it's not clear code, and I can't work out whether it's just for the online Mic on a headset or a standalone Mic.

Been experiencing the bad quality when using both the built in audio recorder (one you get when selecting the multi task window and get the quick access apps) and WhatsApp.

And just to add, on the other hand when recording video, the audio is crystal clear.

FAIL
I can't even use this phone because of this. Skyping is impossible. SCREW YOU SONY SCREW YOU!

Good Conversation Recorder for HTC Phones??

Hi
Have been using Resco Audio recorder and Vito Audio Notes to record phone conversation but in both the softwares i could only here my voice clearly and the other persons voice is not audible at all. I have faced this problem on ALL HTC DEVICES but the same software worked amazing on XDA Xing and ATOM. cam someone help me here as to what settings to change or what software to use for proper recording.
Thanks
all of these programs will record if the phone is on speaker.
read the documentations, as some phone do not provide duplex conversations, or something like that.
once you set the call on speaker, all works fine, but it's kind of inconvenient.
yea if i remember correctly, it has something to do with the way that the voice calling was implemented in the device that it will only record your voice.
straight from resco.net from the audio recorder page:
(Both sides recording is hardware dependent. If your recording contains voice of one side only, it is not due to the program's failure.)
On my old PPC6700 mine worked fine with the call volume all the way high, The other person sounded a bit low, but if you want you can edit the call on a PC and make them louder. It all depends how often do you plan to record your convos.
I'm recording both sides without speaker or any other hazzle...
This is what I've done:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485783
Do you really intend to unbury every 1+ year old topic on that subject? I think people got it by now. Make ONE thread with full relevant info, that will do it.

Need a Call Recorder for windows mobile

I have the Sony x1.
I always find myself wishing I had recorded calls.
Is there a way to have your phone automatically record all calls.
If it was just a stand alone program that needed to be activated each time I think would forget.
Try this:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-acr-auto-call-recorder.html
Same as above:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=536472
It only works one way though...
The X1 has call recording built-in through the Notes app (also accesible through the phone dialer. Once in the Notes app, go to Menu->Use Recording Toolbar. You can record the conversation while writing into the notes app. It's unfortunate SE didn't integrate this better into the dialer app.
You can record both sides of the conversation if you use speakerphone only. Using the handset, it will only record yourself and the other end will be inaudible. I believe this is some hard limitation in the design of the phone and not something that can be overcome by software.
EDIT: Ooops, I see you want calls recorded automatically...Notes doesn't do that
How do I access the feature through the phone dialer.
If you are using the built-in SE dialer, it is the icon that looks like a sticky note with a tack through it. Pressing that will load the Notes app with the number you are dialing already inserted. From there, just follow the instructions in my previous post.
I believe once a call is initiated, you can still run notes the traditional way (Start Menu->Notes) and achieve the same thing if you have a different dialer you are using.
This functionality with notes is cute, but it only record some 30 seconds. How can I change it. Through regedit or?
One more thing: The loudness of person that I called on recording is miserable... My voice is lot louder... how can I fix this?

As stated in my first post, you have to use speakerphone to get a usable record volume from the other caller. This is inherent in the X1 design.
I don't understand why some phones have this limitation and others don't. My old Moto v60 could record both ends of the phone call perfectly without any fuss.

Look at Resco Audio Recorder.
I have tried many programs and none work perfectly so here is what i did to get perfect results:
Plug your xperia into the "Line in" port on your computer using a male to male 3.5 mm audio cable - after that i used a program like Audacity to record the call.
It records your voice and the person you are speaking to with perfect results.
^^^ That's clever, but how do you fit your computer in your pocket?

Problem with the speakers in phone mode...

After using the one at home over the speakers to talk i must say thats the only bad thing about this phone.
The speak quality is poor and you have an consistent noise/hissing on the htc one side in background out of the speakers. The part on the other side told me i sound unnatural like i stand in a big empty room without furniture..tinny like.
As good as the speak is when you do it normaly at your ear as big it fails over the speakers....and thats inapprehensible cause the speakers are wonderful in playing music or videos...
Have anybody else this problem? When yes can it be a software problem? Or is it only my phone...
reviewees said speaker is excellent even using it on phone calls. have you tried using it on a open area or where signal is great? Or try using LTE when calling. Or that must be your network doing audio compression on phone calls?
Dude if it is a network problem don't you think the speech was also terrible when calling on ear and not with external speakers only?
LTE i not have but LTE is only for internet speed my friend, not for call quality. What i try are different simcards from different providers and call different users, the speaker has this noisy sound in the background on all cards with all callers...
Yes, i try different areas but it is not the provider, i have with the same provider at the same location with note 2 no probs, the sound from the external speaker of the note 2 are better at phone calls as from the one...
Only time I use loudspeaker in a phone call is if I'm on hold and don't want to hold the phone to my ear, so thankfully not a big deal.

I have this problem too if i do a selfmade video with the camera in a silent room and play it on the one...the noise is existent in all the time of that video. If i play it on the pc the noise is gone...
So i think it will be a problem for you too
Let's just hope it is a software problem buddy. As far as I know reviewers have tried it and never mentioned such problem. Are there any updates on your phone? Or have you tried flashing it with a different firmware version at the very least?
Also could you try the same through VOIP like skype and try also a sound recorder on your phone. And see if the problem persists.
No Dude, no new firmware to flash. And for now no rooting, that comes later when i know all is fine with the phone...
this happen with htc one x with original rom, with cm10 it not happens...I think its a drivers related :S

[Q] Camcorderproblem: Only one channel recording instead of stereo after 4.4.2 update

After I updated my HTC One to Android KitKat the Phone only records with one channel (left channel) instead of two (stereo) when using the camcorderfunction.
Anyone having the same issue?
What Rom are you on? I wrote about that when I installed Viper over the weekend. Noticed exact same thing. Thought my second Mic was dead. The only one active is the Mic on the bottom.
But, I returned to my 4.4 stock kit Kat T-Mobile US Rom, and stereo recording is working.
If you can list what Rom you are on that would be great.

Not sure...we need more testers to try some video recording and post results.
The problem is that testing a video and relying on the phone speakers to show the problem won't work, since the phone speakers will play the left track through both speakers, giving the appearance that audio was recorded in stereo...
The video needs to be listened through earphones, or copy the video from the phone to PC/MAC and then give it a listen.

Anyone, please? Am I the only one here who has this problem with 4.4? (OTA)
I've seen a few posts in the Rom threads where people have brought this up. Saw a post in Revolution and Insert Coin threads.
But we need more people to test video recording and then listen through ear buds or on computer.
Anyone who is on the latest and greatest Sense 5.5 kit Kat builds, can you please make a short video using the Sense camera app, and listen to it through headphones or on computer? Do you only have audio coming out of the left channel?

Yes. But strangely, when I restart the phone and make a video, then it works perfectly :S But when I make a second video, the audio comes only from the left channel.
I can confirm that.
There is a command, which HTC uses to activate the camcorder mic. Maybe HTC forgot to call this procedure when restarting the 2nd recording.
The function is already present in the phone application to enable the camcorder mic for the noise canceling function.
I use this as a workarround to enable stereo recording.
Maybe someone can compare the old and the new video app to find the "enableCamcorderMic" Function and make it available for other applications. There are some applications which allow to select between the main and the camcorder mic. They work on most devices, which have 2 mics, but not on the HTC ONE. This can be tricked out by switching to the phone application while a recording-application already records. Start a call and cancel the call. Then return to the recording app via taskmanager and you will have 2 channel recording. Unfortunately this does not work for the video app, which cancels video recording when switching to the phone app. But I did not need the workarround in the past for the videoapplicatiom. But now HTC has a bug in it. I hope someone could be able to isolate the "enableCamcorderMic" function.

Hi - can you explain in more detail what your workaround is? Take first video - then open phone app - then go back to camera app? Or does this not work anymore.
Anyone else experience this issue of only getting stereo recording in the first go around...exit camera app....go back to camera app start a new video.
listen to the second video you took through headphones or on computer - do you hear both channels?

I described it more detailed here But unfortunately it does not help for the new camera bug, because the video application stops recording, when switching to the phone application. Normal audio application continue recording when taking or receiving a call, so they benefit from the oping of the camcorder channel which the phone application does for the noise canceling funciton.
Did you try to install the old video application from older stock ROM to your phone. Maybe that helps.

I actually threw on one of the Sense 6 roms. Guess what, no good. Same exact problem.
Something tells me its in the kernel of 4.4.2.
What's bugging me is that no one else either doesn't notice this problem or doesn't care judging by the lack of of comments I've seen. It would be hard to get a Dev on board to look into if there is lack of interest.
Right now I've flashed a Google play rom. While the Google play Roms don't do video recording in stereo at least mono recording is handled correctly, by distributing the source to both channels.
In sense its not mono in that the right side is just dead. Nothing worse than playing back videos on a computer or TV and having the right speaker sometimes on and then off.

Yes your observation is totally correct. The camcorder mic is responsible for one channel. If it is not available you will get just one channel. In my testings the phone switched to mono recording from the main mic.
I tested to reinstall an older HTC video app via titanium backup, but it did not start.
Ralf
I can confirm this. I just did an RUU and i recorded using the voice recorder and video recorder and both come out with only 1 channel being used and its the left one.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/xuxe5l1xvqutp0g/JSajfATqqY That has 4 samples in it, 2 using the latest stock update on the sprint htc one m7 and the other 2 are from the sixth sense rom rls2
I am running 4.19.1540.1
EDIT
Ok I see what you're talking about.
Steps to reproduce:
1 Boot to a kit kat sense rom
2 record video A
3 immediately record video B of exact same ambient soundfield. Repeat if desired for videos B1, B2 etc.
4 reboot
5 record video C of exact same ambient soundfield.
Videos A and C are in stereo, video B is in mono.

Yes, and following videos D,E, F... Only the first video is in stereo.
So the enableCamcorderMic function ist used in the new video app after reboot. I experimented with killing camera app, gallery and videoplayer after the first video and sometimes I got back the stereo without an reboot. For this I used the app "TaskManager" (not simply the function in the "recent apps" screen). But i could not find a reproducible way.
So we need a firmware switch for this function. Then all apps would profitate from it:
Selecting main or camcorder mic for mono recording.
Using stereo recording.
Using mono recording from both mics. This helps if you held the phone while making notes of a speech (e.g. in university) and recording. On the HTC ONE the main mic points to your body and not in the direction of the speaker.
I hope that one of the devs could find out how HTC enables the camcorder mic in the video app and in the phone application when pressing the call button.

I had asked Kernel Dev Flar2 to see if he could reproduce the problem and he could on his M7. He said he might take a look if he has time, but I think he's got the M8 now, so not 100% sure. Hope that he can.
In the meantime - to counter the issue, I've flashed now a Sense 5.5 Android 4.3 Rom on my phone, running on top of KitKat firmware. Stereo recording acts normal the way its supposed to everytime exiting and reopening camera app. So if you need stereo recording, until someone fixes it, I suggest finding a Sense 5.5 Jellybean Rom.
For me its important because I'm always capturing videos of my 6 year old and can't tell her, 'honey hold on, I need to reboot my phone so I can record you in stereo"....
Somehow we have to grab the attention of HTC so they are aware, I hope they don't leave us hanging now that the M8 is out and attention is focused on that.
It would seem to me that everyone who is on a KitKat firmware/Rom probably has this issue - we just need more testers to confirm and then go to HTC on Twitter/Facebook.

Somehow we have to grab the attention of HTC so they are aware said:
Well I have reported the missingaudio recording for normal apps months ago. Even to HTC. I have also uploaded them a audiofile to demonstrate the workarroud, but they told be that they will send it to HTC developer team. I am waiting for months so I decided to share the workaround although it is complicated. I think they don't want other developers use both mics for stereo recording. The people should use the own HTC video app to capture stereo videos. But now they have fallen in their own hole by forgetting to insert the enableCamcorder function in the new videoapp for KitKat. It is ouside the normal Android SDK, so normal developers are not able to use the function.
This is really a restriction and a challenge for developers.
And I think HTC has to react and update their video, because many people will complain the missing stereo on video.
The professional musicians are in small minority, but if you once heard the difference between mono and stereo you will always prefer stereo, because you can better understand even an recorded speech in stereo.

Tips for Xperia (v) owners with incompatible headphones

Hello all, I need to post 10 messages before being able to post one useful reply in the development part.
Having no idea what to write about, I just transform my (unpostable) answer in a useful thread where more people will find it and where i might even get useful reactions so that we all learn some things.
Ok, to the point:
When using most unofficial headphones, the telephone won't recognise the plug layout.
Depending on the rom/firmware it hasn't got the same consequences.
Sometimes there is sound coming out of the headphones and sometimes there isn't.
With the official Sony roms it wasn't a problem before (just a popup message stating the buttons unavailable) but I had the no sound problem on my V after updating to 4.3 too.
I have an xperia v and before that I had an xperia p, an app called SoundAbout has solved problems for both models, with all kinds of headsets and every rom, both on dalvik and art, so it might work for other models too.
I found it here on xda frontpage a few years ago and it never let me down.
I'm not affiliated with the creators by the way.
We got a free licence for the pro version here ont the xda forum at the time but I lost it and the free version does just fine.
It really is very simple, you start the app and redirect media sound to the headphones.
Another thing that I discovered only last Sunday:
The disadvantage of the SoundAbout app is that the phone considers the outgoing sound as going to the phones speaker, and thus a lot of audio enhancements like headphone surround don't work, you only have the options for the speaker that will have effect.
But I'm running a new rom now, 4.4.4 neowave, the fastest and best battery by far of all roms I have tested.
This rom uses viper4android, where i found an option to lock the settings, so that it is possible to use the headphone options on the speaker sound, and thus for the headphones when used with SoundAbout.
I don't care about mic or buttons working so I have no info about that.
But the sound on my v is finally perfect with my highend headphones, after years of searching how to.
I hope this helps someone, and that it makes other people as happy as I am.
Comon peeps, more than a hundred views but not a single reply?
I don't want to make a 10 post monologue to get to the limit of being able to feedback in rom topics....
Doesn't anybody care about sound quality on his phone ?
Are people getting used to choppy badly decoded music that much?
Am I unique in carying and listening my music on my phone?
I just want to drop by and say that this works indeed for all my NeoWave users, Xperia T ones included.
So if you have any earphone issues, try this app! :good:
Thanks for dropping by
I'm glad it works on the T too.
Personally I tried almost all roms for the V that are/were available here on xda, I haven't counted but that must be more than 20 roms, not counting the updates, and SoundAbout always worked.
For my P also I tried a lot of roms and mods, and no problems encountered with SoundAbout (a lot with incompatible headphones on official roms).
It seems that it is not guaranteed that the mic and buttons work, even with the pro version that has more options, at least that is what I found reading around on the Web, but I'm quite curious about the actual pro version.
Is there anyone that has experience with the pro version ?
I have not tried the pro version, but I have another question..
Do you have any experiences concerning the trial version? Is the usage limited to a certain amount of days or does the app provide most of its features for an unlimited amount of time?
Concerning the media sound routing there is no limitation.
The free version has the following options :
Service - on(background), on(foreground) , on(auto restart), off
Media audio - let app decide, speaker, headphones, headphones (with mic)
Notification behaviour - block notification to speaker on/off
Notification behaviour - block ringtones to speaker on/off
Notification behaviour - speak caller name options
Wired headset behaviour - set detection options when plugged in
In the pro version there are
Phone call redirection settings
Extra settings for text to speach
Bluetooth behavior
Dock behaviour
So, with the free version the headphones do not work for phonecalls.
As I already don't use my headphones for calling, it does not bother me.
hat does work is the widget (1 tile) that toggles sound redirection.
That's great. So the functionality we need is not limited. :good:

What exactly does not work?
It won't autodetect some headphones but if you set service to "on, foreground" and the media audio setting to "wired headphones" ?
Isn't there any sound coming through ?
Is there maybe an app that will make my Xperia V recognise my Nokia (TV Out) RCA cable?

It won't autodetect some headphones but if you set service to "on, foreground" and the media audio setting to "wired headphones" ?
Isn't there any sound coming through ?
