[Q] Beginners help of which ROM to choose - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody!
I have joined XDA-Developers forum today and read a bit about rooting my GT-I8190. Here are the SPECS:
Code:
CSC: I8190OXXAMA2
PDA: I8189XXAMA2
ANDROID VERSION: 4.1.2
BUILD NUMBER: JZO54K.I8190XXAMA2
REGION: NEE (according to Kies)
So I want to root my phone. Mainly to be able to fully use BetterBatteryStats, install Titanium Backup and perhaps remove apps.
Kind of like spring cleaning.
I don't want to change my phones look and feel to much. If there are improvements I won't say no. Currently I'm having battery problems and WIFI problems...
Anyhow.. Looking around I think I've found a couple of ROMS that seems to fit my description. But then I think it's hard to compare and choose of which one I should use and therefore I need your help..
Almost forgot.. Since this is a Phone from work I need to be able to go back to original eventually.
Here are the ROMS I found:
[ROM][CWM] Stock I8190XXAMA2 4.1.2 - BenzROM V3
[ROMS][JZ054K.I9190.XXAMA1][4.1.2-Jelly-bean] [26.01.2013] V5.1
[ROM] I8190XXAMA1_I8190XAAMA1_4.1.2 V2 and V3 [ONLINE]
[ROM] Jelly Bean 4.1.2 I8190XXAMA4_I8190XXAMA2 rooted only [23.02.2013]
[ROM] I8190XXAMA3_I8190XXAMA2_Jelly_Bean_4.1.2_rooted [17.02.2013][ONLINE]
Please help me choose or give me pros and cons...
Also feel free to suggest other ROMs

I would go for benzrom v3 its very good.

There is a few pre-rooted firmwares here also that you didn't mension. Maybe you havn't seen them yet.
I'm using I8190XXAMB3_I8190XXAMB3 and I'm happy with it. Best battery time of the ones I've tried I think.
Usually on NEE too, but countrycode only matters if you rely on OTA-updates or updates through kies, which I don't. I get my updates here
Most important is to pick a firmware for your region.(Europe)
Of the ones listed in the poll I would go for BenzRom v3. Stable, fast and good battery. Or maybe wait for his v4 to come out...

Stick with BENZ ROM. Lots Of people agree.

Ok I will try Benz ROM.
So to use it I have to erase my phone.. That means i should check the box Re-Partition when uploading the ROM with Odin?
@tys0n, no I didn't see those ROMs before.
Also since I don't have 10 posts and cannot post on developers forum(the Benz ROM thread). I ask here. Do I really need an account on 4shared to download the ROM?

Yes

ok, good, yes to re-partition.
But I have a problem Odin 3.07 will not accept .zip files as input when pressing the PDA button and browsing for the firmware. It's looking for files with other file formats.
Do I need to flash this phone with something else before using Benz ROM?

Cant you read? Where does it say flash with Odin?

You flash in CWM not Odin.

Well it apparently was a bad assumption by me.
So I need to install another ROM with root via Odin and then install CWM and from there install your ROM?

Easiest would be to flash cwm from odin and then flash "rom.zip" from cwm.
Last but not least, use triangle away to reset the flash count.

What would be the best option if your region is not listed? Specifically the U.S. (T-mobile).

So, I'm new to Galaxy S. Need Help :)

Hi guys,
I own a Galaxy S i9000 mobile.
It's running on :
Android 2.3.3
Baseband : DXJV9
I have not rooted it or did anything till now.
I wanna flash ICS AOKP on my mobile..
I have tried using the search option but still im soo deserted.
Can you guys guide me on how to root, flash CWM recovery, and flash ICS please ?
and Does Galaxy S supports ROM Manager ? coz i've been using Galaxy Ace before and it didn't support it..
Thanks a lot
For Root read this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
You need to download file ending in JVP. Usually you want the one ending with last 3 digits of your baseband but as there is no JV9 JVP is close enough and is reported as working. Besides it does not really matter as you just need this for root.
Once you have root you can simply follow the guide in the AOKP thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524108
I know you have stated you want AOKP but if you want a bullet proof simple way to get this all done start with this thread for Team ICSSGS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494493
I usually like to make sure I have all necessary files, roms & programmes before starting so if anything goes wrong I can get my phone working again. This tutorial will help you with that also.
After following all of this you should have a good understanding of what to do and then you can flash AOKP as their instructions are kind of limited.
Also when choosing an ICS Rom this is a great thread with regards to performance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554621
AOKP is a wonderful choice.
But if I can give you an advice, wait for the next Milestone which is expected to be released over the next few days

That link for flashing Team ICSSGS has help for everything else. From downloading stock rom to flashing with Odin to flashing ics (in this case team icssgs)
You could potential substitute Team ICSSGS for AOKP.
I got another question..
does Semaphore ICS kernel works on my baseband (i.e - DXJV9) ?

Great
and finally, Which version of the kernel should i use for official AOKP b34? 1.1.0 or 1.1.0s?
Not sure but both should work. 1.0.1s is for slim ics and other roms. If it is not compatible it will break 720 video recording & playback otherwise eveything else should work. There is also a video patch somewhere.

Alright..I've flashed AOKP b34 and Semaphore 1.1.0s
Everything seems to be fine
But now my sdcard is mounted as internal storage and the actual internal storage is mounted as sdcard..is this a bug or what ?
Even when I connect my phone to my PC using USB,only the actual internal storage (which is mounted as SDcard shows up..
I personally haven't 1.1.0 only 1.0.1sbm with slim ics. I think the 1.1.0 is still a test version for cm9 but could be wrong. Things may have updated since i last looked but i recommend reading the semaphore thread and posting there for more help.

Known bug in Semaphore. Make sure you enable the 'Netfilter' module in the app. When it randomly doesn't work, which is the bug, simply check and uncheck it 2 times and it will work.

Now, The only problem I'am experiencing is a little more battery drain when compared to GB.
I am gonna experiment with modems..

Which rom should I use for first flash?

I'm looking to root my phone.
I read a lot on xda and I found a lot of interesting information.
But right now I don't know which kernel/rom combination to use.
I've looked around and I don't really like the feel of ICS. I prefer GB.
So what now?
custom kernel and stock rom?
darky rom?
cm7?

Darky Rom is a good place to start for your first custom rom flash.
All you need to do is reboot to download mode.
Connect your phone to your PC
Open Odin
Install an RE version of Darky Rom
If you do want to try ICS Slim Rom is very nice and i have been running it here for a few weeks with no issues

Thanks for the benchmark thread.
Does CM9 have swype?
or which rom does have it?
For swype just search for swype beta and you can install on any rom. I've tried a lot of the ics roms (cm9, weui, aokp, cna, team icsgs, dark night, slim ics). My favourite was Team ICSSGS. Unfortunately this has not been updated in a while so currently on slim ics which is fast becoming my favourite.
If you havn't flashed ics before i recomend either following ics for dummies or ics333 installation thread in the general section of the sgs forum. Once you've got an ics rom and basics then it is easy to update to slim or any other rom you choose.

Galaxy S I wasn't made for 4.0 so I think its better to put something that will be stable and the buyer will be satisfied with it.
if you want to sell it the best deal would be to make it stock , with stock recovery, and latest stock rom. All custom roms have bugs and problems, which necessit reinstaling or updating. If the buyer knows how to work on android he will flash whatever he wants. If he doesn't, it is better with all the bloatware from samsung and every other app and option working properly.

[Q] Updating firmware will slow mobile?

Hi, I`m completely new to smartphones so bear with me, this is my very first one! :victory:
A brief search did not yield any answer, plus I think such an amateurish question would never be asked here.
I`m thinking that a newer firmware will have more features, fixes etc... and will mean more stuff for the CPU to deal with.
If i update my firmware to the latest firmware that is possible for my mobile, will it slow down my mobile?
No, JB or ICS are significantly smoother than GB and have more features. Its like saying Windows 95 is faster than Windows 7 because Windows 7 has more features.

There are loads of tutorials. Long story short, when you're on GB, you root your phone (flash CF root via Odin), and from there its as simple as downloading a zip file and flashing it in recovery if you want ICS or JB. [Q] [ Need HELP ] .. Not Kernel Panic .. Upload Mode

Dear all XDA Developers
i have samsung galaxy note n7000, after we got the official JB update the device went to be so slow, so i choosed to downgrade it to ICS and i download the sogtware image from (www.samsung-updates.com) as i told it should be official software images.
and i downloaded the ODIN v3.09 for pc, connect the phone and install, it fiinished successfully, AFTER that i start to got the error, the phone shutdown suddenley and got the screen said "RST_STAT 0x2000000 User Fault, not kernel panic, upload mode"
i tried to install again and still have the same error the it is random no specific time, then i download and install the Philz and wipe the phone as for install a new ROM and install the same image then got the same error after two days.
my request is how to solve this problem and where to download an official ICS for my GT-N7000
i hope to find the solution here in XDA developers
best regards
No one can help??!!!!
Is this issue so difficult and there is no solution or any idea about solving it??
It depends on how you choose. Going your path back to official ics could be problematic. So i would just go forward install a custom jb rom such as Aryamod then the problem is solved and u will have a beautiful and fast rom. Done.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
Also, stock ics is known to brick phones.
as i got the official JB via update the device is too slow, so would that problem solved when installing a custom rom? and which rom should i choose? and the problem now is with the device hardware? or just the ics??
as i searched before it on the internet i found that this is a GPS problem!! how can i check that please??

Did you read my post at all? It has got most of the answers. Trying to flash a custom jb using Philz kernel you already have is quite easy

1stly, After getting JB update from OTA, it's recommended to do a factory wipe in stock recovery (This is what Samsung CS told me). I tried and it works (at the expense of having all my data n apps gone).
2nd, Like @forest1971 says, there's many good custom Roms And you can choose per your liking. I strongly oppose going back to ICS as of the brick bug threat. If you really want to downgrade, might as well go for GB.
3rd, WHAT is the point of our good Dev's spending their precious time and cracking their heads to come up with a custom rom IF they are not BETTER than Stock roms?

Installing through odin is the best method for flashing stock rom. You have done it right. Just remember NEVER to do a factory reset anywhere with ICS. Not even in recovery
