How can I pull an app from an official FW archive downloaded from samfirmware? The file downloaded was *.tar and if I extract it I get a *.rfs that has 271MB and some other small files... Is there a way to extract an app from those files?

Here's the content. I downloaded it from Kies. It's the official package of Froyo for italian branded TIM smartphones
Thank you!
Did you find a tar file in the zip? Use that

I have currently Firmware 2.1.1.A.0.6 and have downloaded stock 2.1.1.C... ROM.But the file is compressed in .7z. I haven't rooted my phone neither recovery installed. Please tell me how can i update my phone?
You can't. Open the file and extract the .tft file (flash it via flashtool)

The .7z file contains system.img,data.img,cache.img and nandroid.md5. So I am confused! Recovery can only install .zip format.

Its a backup.
Extract the files in
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/"make a folder here of whatever name you like and extract the contents in this folder"
now go to recovey->backup and restore->restore and you are done
use 7 zip pc software to extract it first....
Officially corp via w8

He is right...
Extract Rom files containing {system, kernel, etc} via "unrar" or "7zip" program from PC.
If your phone is rooted : put files in"clockworkmod/backup " folder.(cwm recovery) then restore from recovery place
Not rooted: dl flashtools app or se companion.
Using se-com is easy but in flashtools you have to put files in"framework"folder which is in the place where you install it.press lightening button in program and flash files.

There is a thread about unpacking a kdz to bin and fls and another one about how to extract all partitions from the .bin file.
Then mount this system.bin file (should be explained as well in this thread) and grab the file you need. Or download a ROM based on v30c and extract it from /system/app

What error are you getting, maybe you need to download the ROM again as it's become corrupted when you downloaded it the first time.
If using 7zip you'll need to extract it twice. The first time uncompresses the file, after which you should have a single file. Sometimes this file won't have a file extension, so in this case rename it and add .tar on to the end. This is now an uncompressed archive file, so open it up in 7zip and extract the contents. After this you should have a folder containing some .bat files and another folder which contains a lot of image files. It is this top level folder you need to select in the Mi Flash Tool.
