4GB Limit? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious, but I would like to know what is the format of the internal memory of the Xperia Z? Right-clicking it in via windows explorer doesn't show any info regarding that. I'm asking this because I've managed to copy over (drag n' drop via windows explorer) a 4.88 GB file.
Coming from a Galaxy Note previously, I didn't think that it was possible to copy over a file > 4GB (on stock), at least not on a FAT32-formatted internal storage.
So... the question is...
what format is the internal storage? NTFS? (There's talk about how it's limited to only Windows) or exFAT?
...or perhaps I'm totally off-course and it's more of an issue regarding MTP?
Either way, I'm a happy guy with how I can actually not worry about the 4GB limit. Of course, I'm still curious... (Eh, if screenies are required for proof, I'll be more than happy to oblige)

Also coming from the Note here, but I didn't had any problem, the Note has the same File System as the XZ

I am sure it will use ext3 a linux/bsd format
Found that it is using ext4 format, so you can drop a 8Gb file there if you want

I bought a MicroSD 32GB (Class 10) but...
- Formatted it ext4 = didn't work
- Formatted it NTFS = didn't work
Unlocked and rooted phone: any way to get a format that then allows me to place file bigger than 4 GB?

Format it to ext4.
Sorry missed your last sentence. But try a different app to format it or try the phone.

I tried to format it in ext4, the phone cannot read it, and if I let the phone format it then it will be fat32...
Inviato dal mio Nexus 7 con Tapatalk 2

Internal storage is ext4. This is not changeable.
External storage ext4 formatted should be readable by the phone.
You're rooted? Try to format it to ext4 using the command line/adb shell session.

This has been repeated too many times. The internal memory is ext3 or ext4 and can take any file you throw at it.
SD cards only work in FAT32 (without root and without extra drivers from the Play Store). No matter what you do, without rooting and installing some driver you cannot use anything but FAT32. SD's in EXT3/4 are not mounted, exFAT and NTFS aren't licensed.

Can you give me some more info about this? Thanks

AW: 4GB Limit?
I dont know, you could google for the information how to format a sdcard to ext4 through adb or a shell.
Another user(s?) further up said though, it wont read ext4 formatted cards. I dont know, I only use a 32GB card and have no big files. My card is fat32 formatted.

This is for the Note 2, but something similar should work for the Xperia Z.

I have rooted my phone, Is there any way to mount exFAT formatted card ?

Hi,
I do not want to start new thread so I am asking here:
Is it possible to format 16 or 32 gb hc card in exFAT by the Xperia Z (not by PC)?
If yes - is it worth doing this?

[Q] micro SD card exfat

Hello guys!
I have 16GB micro SD card and I can't put a movie larger than 4 GB.
my card is formatted as fat32, but I've managed to install paragon+ and mount ntfs card but I still can't copy file larger than 4GB.
Or to be more precise, I can save file via PC on SD card, but all applications don't recognize file.
I have tried with both 4.1.1 and 4.1.2
Does anyone know how to solve this?
paragon didn't mount exfat.

It's an android limitation. Android has not NTFS support out of the box. I was sure it supported exFAT (our big brother does AFAIK) but after formatting my 16 GB class 10 SDcard my phone didn't recognize it anymore So, FAT32 and no 4GB+ files
However there's a good chance CyanogenMod supports these file systems (at least exFAT) out of the box

Get a live USB stick for any Linux distro and try saving it that way.
AW: [Q] micro SD card exfat
It should be possible to reformat the card as ext2/3/4. Android would support it natively. The only issue would be for Windows users to install a kind of driver to use it.

I've solved it.
I've formatted 16 GB SD drive half as fat32 and half as ext4, and then i've made a script to mount ext4 to /mnt/storage3 folder.
Now I can dowbload torrents larger than 4GB.
@oskreso, can you share the script?

If you used to using Linux PC / Laptop, then best system file is ext4. Since Z1 didn't support NTFS regarding lack of kernel features (hopefully doomlord will add this on next build), then ext4 is the best choice.
But if you using Windows, FAT32 is your choice. But you can't copy a single file which larger than 4 GB (this is the lack of fat32), beside that fat32 can only formating a disk which not bigger than 32gb. In this case, you can create two or more partitions for your 64gb sdcard.
If there's any questions, let me know. Hope this help.

Do not mess up with partitions if you will not use some kind of installations where EXT4 is needed. 64GB SDXC have natively extFAT as primary Partition and its supported by Z1, best choice and performance, also it support more than 4GB per file.

With what Partition System did you formatted your SD last time? Minitool Home Edition I think do not support exFAT. I remember Windows 7 can do that and it will let you formatting the card in exFAT with 32k cluster size. If you can't try to find an application to do so.

Ok, just thought I'd ask as I get the option in my recovery. I've never used it but I assumed it would allow you to choose the filesystem to format.
It would be nice though
I'd say you should your xperia take care about formatting:
Aslong as its in your device it shouldn't matter what format the card has. In mtp -mode your xperia acts like a reader/writer. It also updates your file index by this method.
If you're using it as a external SD card you should use whatever suits your os.
Ext4 would be okay since there are open source free writers/readers available for Windows.
Still, any changes need the media scanner to run before your Android recognize the files

64 is SDXC and you forced the card to use FAT32, now you don't get the best performance from your card. All 32GB, and under, microSDs are SDHC and they use FAT32. I have 64GB SDXC and out of box is exFAT and I insered the card in my Z1 and it recognize exFAT very well. If you formatted the card with a wrong program you can compromise your partition system, that is why the Z1 do not recognize your card anymore after formatting. Try again to get the best from SDXC.

Most likely because the SD card is formatted in FAT32 which has a limit of 4GB. If the destination is NTFS, you should be able to copy it
Can't do files that big on fat 32 I think. 4gb would be okay, but if it's just a little over, no dice. You sure it's less than 4,294,967,295 bytes*?

Won't work either. File system restrictions are still present even if done another way
Try to use another format. The format of choice would either be exfat or ext4
While ext4 should do the trick I'd prefer exfat since it has windows compatibility. Ext4 isn't natively supported by windows (only Unix based)
Since 32gb is max for fat partitions, the z1 on the other hand supports 64gb cards, it should be able to mount exfat

Check out this great guide to get unlocked, recovery and rooted
If you bought your phone in the United States use 32-bit, if you bought it in Europe/Australia use 64-bit (I did see a post that said the 510s sold in Russia are 32-bit)
Make a backup of everything on your sd card as this will wipe it
Flash either RhInStOnE-A11 or Modded Desire 510 Kernel v2.6.1
Use Aparted to Delete the sdcard
Use Aparted to Create a FAT32 partition (whatever size you want) to put external files on
Use Aparted to Create a ext4 partition (whatever size you want) to put linked apps on
Use Link2SD to link your apps and free up space on internal storage
Here are two simple videos that show how to use Aparted and Link2SD: Aparted and Link2SD
I am currently using one 32GB FAT32 partition and one 32GB ext4 partition with Link2SD and it is working great

I really like MiniTool Partition Wizard. It has a great interface. I did run into a problem with it, though. I was able to create a FAT32 and an ext4 partition. I used Aparted to format both partitions and it worked perfect.

You probably don't need the FAT32, but I like it to interact with Windows. I don't think Windows can read ext4. I don't know how else I would drag/drop music and other files to my phone without it.

Honestly, In my opinion you won't need the FAT32 partition. I'm running my whole sdcard (which is f2fs) as internal /data and everything still works with USB. Windows won't read f2fs/ext4 if you insert the sdcard directly into the computer.

I can't get AParted to work properly. It keeps stopping in the middle of creating the 2 partitions on my 128GB SD Card. Little help?

Hello,
Did you Unmount and Delete the card first or did you just try to Create a partition?

SD card file system doesn't support exfat

I used Moto X Force before, and sandisk 64gb sd card with exfat. The sd card work fine in X Force and PC.
But when I plug it into nokia 8 , system said it doesn't support this card.
So I have to backup sd card, format it via nokia 8, and restore all the thing in the sd card.....
I plug sd card which format via nokia 8 into PC, the file system is fat 32.
Yep! That's one of the downsides of pure Android..
It is all about royalties, Google doesn't want to pay them to Microsoft so they don't support sdcards, at least in any other format than old old fat32... Exfat and ntfs are somehow owned by Microsoft...
And with fat32 we are able to use one single file no more than 4gb, that's the limit on fat32... So old so old!
one the other hand what kind of file will you move to a smartphone that is gonna be more than 4GB"s?

I stumbled upon this issue when I was transferring movies for a long flight..
And those 4k videos you film with the phone, they get really large quickly.
So is there any other possible file format that both supports +4gb files and works with Nokia 8?
Seems stupid to format 256gb SD-Card with ancient fat32, which will render the 4k video camera feature obsolete.
unless you only record in smaller chunks or get by using the internal storage space for 4k videos.
Luckily I got the 128gb model so I can at least get by without the extra storage, but it also annoyingly limits the individual files less than 4gb on the 256gb card. What a waste...

Yep! You really said it! It is stupid.
Nokia could add support for other filesystems, but it would require them to pay royalties to Microsoft.
Only format that I have been able to use is ANCIENT fat32... ERKELE:
What about EXT4??

You need root to mount ext4 drives, and since we don't have root on the Nokia 8 yet, it's useless.

Thats too bad. My 3 year old phone mounts all filesystems including ext4, ntfs and exfat. I may have to reconsider buying this phone due to bootloader, root and filesystem problems.
Shouldn't a linux device support ext4 by default?

I have this exact same issue. My phone is Nokia 7 Plus. But I did not format it in from the phone & rather i tried doing things through PC & now my SD card is write protected. I am not able to remove that write protected and format the card. Can someone help here.

you can try remove partition., if not work in pc (a think you use Windows), then try in GNU/Linux in GParted or only via GParted LiveCD/USB
