Greetings Everyone
Please help me
I was wanting to install the revolution Rom for my Incredible S which at the moment is running on Android 4.0.4
I have been reading this article
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088498
and i understand that i need:
You need:
HTC Incredible S S-OFF
4EXT Touch Recovery (what is this and how do I find it?)
New hboot from [HBOOT][S-OFF] BlackRose (unable to install BlackRose as it says to me that my system is not Rooted?)
I Already was here to unlock the bootloader: "www.htcdev.com/bootloader" and as i understand it it is not the same as Rooting my HTC
PLease someone help me to Root and to find 4EXT Touch Recovery

This question should have been posted in the General section. Anyway, you apparently haven't even begun to read the sticky posts in this forum because you would have found the answers.
Unlocking your hboot is the first step. Now you can use either the Downgrade tool in the General section or the HTC IncS tool 3.3.0.1 in this section.
Yep, as tpbklake said read the stickies on the general forum, they will give you your answer, the gave me an answer when I didn't know anyway
And what happened to the 10 post rule??

PLease can you help me more
I'm going through the newb guide and Im stuck at step 4 because the "here" link is unavailable.
on this post i mean http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105
4. Go to here and download the recovery image for the Incredible S. Put it in the "android" folder along with the other files needed for HTC's unlock process, above. This file is the ClockWorkMod recovery image for the IncS.
Thanks

I guess the fact that he has been a member for so long must have allowed him to post in DEV.
I just wanted to post in here telling this guy how he was f***ed but it seems as though everyone else has taken him down a notch already. Glad to see people are posting about him and not to him. : )

Why can't we be a little friendly ?

Is today "Defend a moron who posted this thread in the wrong forum months ago" day? Get over it and yourself.
It's even more weird if you check his post history... He hasn't posted in months. Assuming he bought an incredible S that updated to 4.0.4 and it was the first thread he found and was sad that there was no direct answer without having to read.

whats even more weird is I was doing a search for incredible s parts, my girlfriend (not that you two hobbits would know what that is) ruined the micro-usb jack on her already rooted incredible and this thread was dug up by google. look like i struck a nerve amongst the lifeless acne ridden of xda....dont be so sensitive little missies, grow a thicker skin or go home. It seems to me the morons in this thread are the ones who ASSume to know what they do not.

This thread will be giving all the newbies basic knowledge on how to build custom ROMS using android Kitchen by dsixda
This is the most basic tutorial!!! Don't ever consider yourself as a developer using this.
Developer is someone who understands what a code is and writes, or enhances the present one.
What is Android Kitchen?
Linux terminal for windows – Basically a Tool created by dsixda (Recognized senior developer) which helps you customize the shipped ROMS, or modify custom ROMs for the features you like
Setting up Cygwin and android kitchen
1. You will need java jdk to run the kitchen – you can download it from here
2. Download and extract the kitchen from here
3. Run the setup (.exe) and follow the instructions or the read me text file in the downloaded zip file.
4. local package directory *must* be the path to the cygwin_packages folder that you just extracted
5. when it shows all the package names, go to the top and select "all <-> default" until it changes to "all <-> install" (you must click on the arrows)
6. Now you have Cygwin installed on your computer.
7. Open the shortcut on the desktop and close it. It will include three files in the Cygwin folder.
8. Now it’s time to add kitchen to your folder. Go here and download the kitchen files.
9. Extract the downloaded kitchen files Cygwin folder C:\cygwin\home\(Your user name) and rename it as kitchen
Ex: Android-Kitchen-0.218 to kitchen.
10. Now your kitchen is ready for COOKING!!:highfive:
Starting with the kitchen
1. Open Cygwin , it should open with your username as the directory
2. You will have to change the directory to the kitchen
Code:
cd kitchen
./menu
3. This will take you to the menu which has list of things that can be performed using the kitchen.(Below)
Code:
===================================================================
Android Kitchen - by dsixda (xda-developers.com)
===================================================================
Main Menu
1. Set up working folder from ROM
2. Add root permissions
3. Add BusyBox
4. Disable boot screen sounds
5. Add wireless tethering
6. Zipalign all *.apk files to optimize RAM usage
7. Change wipe status of ROM
8. Change name of ROM
9. Check update-script for errors
10. Show working folder information
To give a head start
I am going to explain how to create a working folder >>You need a ROM (Which is a .ZIP file)
1. You can use a stock rom (OTA update from HTC or an RUU(extracting ZIP from RUU will be explained below)
2. Or, you can use custom ROM that you have downloaded.
Remember you are using someone else’s hard work, Do not Upload your cooked ROM
- Unless you have changed lot of the features and you might think that will help the original rom developers a lot(which can never happen!!!
-You take prior permission from the Original ROM developer and give proper credits upon their acceptance to upload
Click to collapse
3. Place the ROM in the original update folder (i.e. C:\cygwin\home\\(Your user name)\kitchen\original_update
4. Go to the Menu on the kitchen
By opening Cygwin>cd kitchen>./menu
5. Select option 1 and follow instructions to setup the working folder.
6. Once the folder is setup you can verify it by going to the kitchen folder.
7. You can change the system apps, Bootanimations, Default walllpapers and lots.Explore and let us know!!
8. Always play safe by making a nandroid backup of your current ROM before testing!
Extracting the ROM from an RUU
This is the most simple and easiest way. There are tools which can do that for you. But I prefer this
Run the RUU and as soon as you see the device picture on the screen, Go to %temp% and find the ROM.zip, copy and paste it.You can exit the installer after copying.:victory: Done!!

- Use this system.img in kitchen's original_update folder
- WARNING - If using a ROM made from system.sin (not Nandroid), it
is recommended to flash from the temporary (fastboot) Clockwork

You can't really cook a ROM for which we have no kernel now can we? I mean even if you had successfully ported the ROM, it wouldn't boot because you don't have a kernel.

I had that problem before.
Fixed by clean flashing a new rom.
Don't use slimsense it's outdated. I'd go for revolution. For the wifi to work be sure to flash the correct kernel

[SIZE=+3]Frequently Asked Questions[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+2]HTC Incredible S[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+1]This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please only post in this thread with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+1]Q1: How do I root my phone?[/SIZE]You have two choices.
1. To downgrade and s-off using revolutionary and nonverbose's toolkit. This is harder but s-off makes flashing ROMs and Kernels easier. If you have HBOOT 1.16 or higher you need to downgrade before using revolutionary. See here
[TOOL][SCRIPT]S-off for HBOOT 1.16 and above
OR
2. Unlock using the HTC dev method, which unlocks your bootloader but you remain s-on. You have to flash boot.img via fastboot every time you change your kernel and most ROMs. See here
[Guide] Newb guide to unlocking HBOOT 1.16.0000 and 2.00+ and flashing a custom ROM
[SIZE=+1]Q2: Which custom recovery should I use?[/SIZE]The tried and tested recovery that most people use is 4EXT.
Find it here: 4EXT Recovery Classic v2.2.7 RC5 | TAR BACKUPS | Convert FS | Romname -> Backupname
4EXT is officially supported, TWRP and the latest CWM are not official.
[SIZE=+1]Q3: Can I install an OTA on my rooted or bootloader unlocked phone?[/SIZE]No. If you want to install an OTA (imo you'd be crazy to ) you must revert to stock EVERYTHING. This includes ROM, recovery, and reverting to a locked bootloader. In my opinion it is best to flash a stock-based custom ROM like Blackout ICS, tpbklake's stock rooted ROMs or Android Revolution HD to save you from the hassle of reverting to stock. It also gives you the flexibility to easily flash a custom ROM
[SIZE=+1]Q4: How do I flash my boot.img in fastboot?[/SIZE]On your computer, open the custom ROM zip using an unzip program (WinZip, WinRAR, etc.) and extract the file "boot.img" (no quotes). Place this file in the same folder as fastboot.exe..
See this video: [Tutorial] How to Fastboot Flash boot.img on S-ON HTC Device
And here: [Tutorial] How to flash a new boot.img via Fastboot
[SIZE=+1]Q5: What is the difference between S-off and HTC dev unlock?[/SIZE]Basically, s-off gives you access to everything you need as a normal user. To flash a ROM, all you have to do is wipe, flash it in recovery and reboot
With HTC Dev unlock you will remain s-on and have limited access. You cannot flash radios and other files via hboot. When you flash a ROM you must flash it in recovery and then fastboot flash the boot.img (see Q4)
[SIZE=+1]Q6: Do I need to s-off or HTC dev unlock my bootloader to install a custom ROM?[/SIZE]Yes
Otherwise you cannot have a custom recovery which you need to flash a custom ROM
[SIZE=+1]Q7: What is HBOOT/bootloader and how do I enter it/what does it do?[/SIZE]HBOOT is the white screen that displays all your phone info on it. It will show you your HBOOT version, radio version, whether you are s-off, s-on or have an unlocked bootloader.
[SIZE=+1]Q8: What is ADB?[/SIZE]Stands for Android Debugging Bridge.
Read more about it here: [GUIDE] ADB Workshop and Guide for everyone
[SIZE=+1]Q9: What a nandroid backup?[/SIZE]A nandroid backup is what is made when you go to recovery and backup. It backs up everything you see in android, including your kernel/boot, system/ROM, all your data, settings etc. If you want to create a "freezeframe" of what your phone is like, create a nandroid backup and it will be able to be restored at any time. Use the same recovery that you backed up with to restore.
[SIZE=+1]Q10: My PC won't connect to the phone by USB (for RUU, fastboot, adb, etc.), what do I do?[/SIZE]Make sure you have all the drivers needed for what you are doing.
[SIZE=+1]Q11: What is the best ROM/kernel?[/SIZE]You need to make up your mind yourself It is totally an opinion thing. Some don't like the bloat of sense and prefer AOSP ROMs. I like the Sense interface so I mostly use sense ROMs. One way to see popularity is to have a look at everyone's signatures and to see what they are running.
For stability and everyday use its better to go with a non-experimental ROM
[SIZE=+1]Q12: Does rooting the phone affect my battery life, performance or coolness?[/SIZE]Alone, rooting the device does next to nothing. After the process of rooting, a rooted stock ROM will be absolutely no different to the stock ROM unrooted. However now you have permissions to write to /system and other partitions that you could not do anything to before.
However by installing a custom ROM it can affect all of the above, including coolness
[SIZE=+1]Q13: How much can I overclock my device without causing damage to it?[/SIZE]The general consensus is that 20% more clock speed won't hamper your device. Mine has run at 1200MHz for over a year and it is fine. However over that, there is potential for damage. That said, there are many who use the phone at 1500MHz and they are fine. Just remember that all chips are different, yours might not be able to take the speed some others can get up to. Some cannot take over the 1024MHz stock, but the msm8255 is designed to run at 1400MHz.
Tip: If your device is unstable at high frequencies, try raising the voltages at those frequencies
You also need a custom kernel with OC enabled for you to raise the frequencies.

Official OTA should have it. Custom ROMs based on stock like blackout have it.
Did you go to settings--> security--> screen lock? Face unlock is an option for me in blackout.

About the overclocking, might be worth saying that some chips are unstable at slightest overclock as well...
Especially now when some people have had this phone for 2 years or so, the CPU might not like overclocking at all.

Radios?
What is the significance of Radios?
I unlocked my IncS from HTCDev, its still S-on. I'm using the ROM "[ROM] [Stock] HTC VIVO ICS 4.0.4 Sense 4.1 [En] [Everything works]" though I have to push the boot.img manually every time I flash a new rom, just wanted to know when do one needs to flash radios?

Depending on your area, signal can change from better or worse after flashing a radio. Im pretty sure it also influences GPS location/navigation and it can help increasse battery life
Thanks

The very first thing you do now is "Read ALL the sticky posts (the ones which are pinned) in the General Section and the Android Development Section of this forum."
After that you can move on to installing a custom rom, overclocking, using scripts etc. But remember that you and only you are responsible for anything that happens to your phone. Of course we will try to help if anything goes wrong but ultimately YOU are responsible.
I hope to see your next post only 'after' you have read and understood the Sticky Posts.
