Following SXSW then saw this AT&T spot promoting a new app - Nexus 7 General

Discovered this Tapestry app from AT&T. Pretty nifty! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nxa8YoEhsA&feature=youtu.be. Requires more than one phone to "share".

Carrier IQ

I'm looking for a way to disable Carrier IQ on HTC Vivid.
It seems like HTC Vivid has two Carrier IQ packages:
com.htc.android.iqrd
com.htc.android.iqagent
Is it safe to disable these packages?
If these packages to be disabled, would it stop Carrier IQ?
Is there another way to stop Carrier IQ?
I believe that Carrier IQ software invades our privacy, and we should have an option to opt-out of this "service." I've submitted the following request to AT&T:
I've noticed that my new HTC Vivid phone runs Carrier IQ software.
I did NOT give AT&T, HTC or Carrier IQ permission to collect my smartphone data as described in the Carrier IQ web site (http://www.carrieriq.com) and their marketing youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KRsBkOEXhI).
I'd like to opt-out from Carrier IQ data collection as described in the aforementioned Carrier IQ youtube clip.
Please acknowledge and confirm my opt-out request ASAP.

This technically is a question. Belongs in general.

As far as I have read on Carrier IQ in other threads my assumption would be that it goes into the phone deeper than just two processes and from what I have read is quite a pain to get rid off especially without Perm Root. Not sure it can be gotten rid of 100% without Perm Root, Unlocked Bootloader and S-Off.
Check out my post. Let me know if there are problems.

In the letter from at&t to Senator Franken they state that although it is installed on the vivid it isn't activated.

What's the point of having it on the phone then? Also, I really don't care about them collecting some random data to make the network better, but my main concern is whether or not its using my data on my 2 gig plan...

According to AT&T response to Senator Franken ..."AT&T's CIQ profiles are designed so that data uploads from customers handsets do not incur charges'
Of course txts weren't suppose to be saved either...
I wonder how many other bugs will be found.

Yeah, that's strange. Either way, I don't personally care too much about it. I think its all been overblown.

I respectfully disagree.
There's a keylogger running on our phones.
Any APP can potentially harvest this wealth of data. Would you like to have a keylogger installed on your PC, even for your benefit, but without your knowledge and permission.
Then, once data is transmitted to carriers -- we've to trust carriers, and their network infrastructure to safeguard our data.
Carrier IQ makes our phones, and carriers networks, target for hackers and social engineering attacks, IMHO.
Notice, the data may include the phone numbers you've dialed, SMS and email message texts, passwords entered, etc...
I hope AT&T would follow Sprint and disable Carrier IQ data collection, and direct phone manufacturers provide firmware free of Carrier IQ ASAP.
Since AT&T Mobile days they have kept track of who you called and for how long.
I kinda liked going to the website and using it as a 'contact' manager.
If you wanted the info sent with your bill you had to pay extra.
That was many many years ago.
(the 'hand set' looked like an over sized monthly planner - HUGH
I have stopped using my Vivid for mobile banking (including texts, App & websites).
I'll no longer read sensitive emails also on the Vivid.
Thankfully my Inspire (without CIQ) is still good to go.
(Mail truck just pulled away from my mail box.)
I haven't had any statements for any accounts (Credit cards, banks, credit union)
mailed to me in years, so I don't have to run out & get my mail before someone else (a Federal offense I believe) or worry about wrong delivery.
I'm don't know what CIQ sends and what AT&T reviews.
I do know that the locked bootloader stops us from flashing custom ROMs or CM,
thus we can't remove CIQ and I'm not very happy about it.
just my 10 yen worth
Did anyone tried this new APP called IQIQ?
Take a look at the article:

Very interesting...
By the way, since Carrier IQ profile can be easily decrypted, the AT&T statement, that the encrypted Carrier IQ profile is safely transmitted to AT&T secure network does not hold water any longer.

T-Mobile upgrade a line broken

You currently cannot upgrade a line to a Nexus 4 on the T-Mobile website. When you click "log in to see your price", the Nexus phone is not listed after you log in. I upgraded without issue on 11-15-12 in-store. The T-Mobile reps are clueless when you ask about this phone. They tried to tell me that it is not a supported phone and they don't offer it. I even sent them a link to an ad that was on their front page advertising the Nexus 4.
Here is a transcript of my chat with Bayani with T-Mobile Live Chat. You might find it humorously frustrating.

[Q] GPS Nexus 6 Carrier App Store

Has anyone else noticed (with the Google Play Store Nexus 6) once you place the sim in, (ATT for me) the apps section inside the play store (top left on the play store home screen) now has a "top ATT picks" or something of the sorts?
When I installed my sim it was prompted to download the att apps but I stopped that from happening, Non of the ATT-Navigate apps or of the likes made it to my phone. Just wondering if T-Mobile people are noticing a similar branding inside the apps section (Just check with a co-worker who is on t-mobile and His says "T-Mobile hot picks") I have been off-contract for a while and I am grandfathered in to the unlimited data (which means no tethering until I edit the props file).
Anyone else noticing similar "deep" brandings based on your carrier? Even if there is non of that crapware on there?

The only thing I've noticed on T-Mobile is the T-Mobile top picks in the Play Store which I've only noticed once. Other than that, nothing.

If you go in the Play Store and hit "Apps" do you still see the T-Mobile top picks? I never saw any of this on my nexus 5, seems kinda of pointless to buy the nexus 6 from GPS since it still adds some of this branding (even if you avoid installing the apps)

I see it, they used to do this in the old Play Store back when it was called Android Market. I personally don't mind, its not intrusive or annoying.
For me it feels that ATT is able to influence items in the app store (aka block certain apps like they used to with google wallet) I hope that is not that case but I don't know how ATT gets a listing on there (which btw replaced the "Editor's choice" apps for me which I liked)
Its been that way for a while .....look at some of the tethering apps it will say this app is not available on your carrier. ...it's that way with sprint
Eff at&t. I'm disappointed how Google's become carriers toy. Not as bad as Samsung but still I was expecting more from Google

This was not the case with a nexus device. When Google wallet came out, att + verzion + etc created isis/softcard/etc and banned google wallet from showing up in the app store (this is pre play services era) but if you had a nexus phone (in my case a gsm GPS galaxy nexus) you did not have this issue. My fear is that google allowing carriers to put "top picks" seems like it could be a slippery slope back to those days (Imagine if they banned all NFC payment apps except softcard).
Anyone else able to chime in on this observation? anyone not have that show up?

I was also curious on how to remove tmobile top picks from play store. Tmobile stuff comes up on YouTube as well. Any ideas?

I bought from the play store. Used with Sprint till a few months ago. Have been using on T mobile for a few months now, and noticed the T-mo top picks for the past 3-4 days
I don't think this has anything to do with the phone but how the play store is set up, I would assume Google allowed the carriers this.
If you really want to remove this message, you'll have to instal Market Unlocker. With Market Unlocker you can set the play store to a non-carrier variant.

question about nexus devices

i have never had a nexus phone and id like to know a couple things. can u use hotspot for free like you can with root on sprint phones? i have a galaxy s7 edge on sprint i have also had a galaxy s6 and s5 on sprint and have always rooted my phones to use hotspot for free. also who do you get service on a nexus phone it looks as though sprint doesn't sell them
Yes, you can do the same mods for hotspots on a Nexus. Rooting and all that is easier and safer since the bootloader unlick is so easy. Not sure why Sprint does not show them now, they used to. You can also purchase from Google and activate them on Sprint. All the US carriers support them.
According to my sprint store they stopped carrying them over low sales

Enhance messaging gimped on TMO?

I'm a little confused about enhanced messaging on T-Mobile. I had an S7 edge before this and enhanced messaging worked cross carrier. I had the S7 on ATT and this chick at work has a note 5 on Sprint. Worried like a charm.
Then I got the Note 7 from T-Mobile.
Now the only time it works is with the only other person I know who has a recent Samsung and is also on T-Mobile. Otherwise it just goes through as a normal MMS.
How could T-Mobile restrict it like that if it's a Samsung feature? It's the stock messenger. Is there a way around this?
The pic with all green icons is the dude I know on T-Mobile.
The other pic is what hers like like now and no longer works. It's just a regular text now with her.
I get video calling not working. That's usually restricted to the carrier but messaging did work and has farted out.
I'm confused as sh*t.

I was also scratching my head on this one. I noticed the same thing.
Bad news...
Well after many calls and a lot of people at T-Mobile not knowing what they are taking about, I finally got an answer. T-Mobile has, in fact, gimped enhanced messaging for use between only T-Mobile users.
In my case, that is only one prison in my contacts so I'm going to disable it. Bad choice for an "Uncarrier" that's supposed to be different from the big carriers.
It is a carrier feature. It was added to the higher end t-mobile phones as an update. My kids both have non Samsung phones and they also have the advanced messaging.

Does advanced messaging work when using textra? Or do you need to use the stock app?

It's not a carrier developed feature. I had an non-branded international S7 Edge and enhanced messaging was baked in and worked cross carrier perfectly. I called to ask Samsung why the change. They said enhanced messaging is a feature they ship to carriers pre-installed. Once in the hands of the carriers, they are free to change as they see fit.
So they did gimp the feature to only work with only TMO users.
Ahh I see advanced is tmobile , enhanced is Samsung. https://newsroom.t-mobile.com/news-and-blogs/advanced-messaging-blog.htm

Wait. Hold up.
They are saying that's it's only for other TMO users but their website says differently. It says in black and white across carriers.
I don't think they know what the **** they are taking about.

It works like iMessage. Videos and photos don't get compressed like when sending a normal MMS.
I never even knew we get there. Since T-mobiles site advertises it, cant we do something to get it to work with all carriors?

That's what I'm working on now. They finally admitted they don't know why it's not working. They also acknowledged it says on the website that it does state that it works cross carrier only that's not the case with the Note 7. The guy I'm working with now send way more intelligent than the other people I've been dealing with.
Hopefully some good news soon. I'll keep ya updated.

Here are my options.
And my version number says Version 3.0.97
Edit: I opened a trouble ticket on 9/30 with the guy who handles the devs at TMO and they said give them at least 3 days before calling. But he said he was going to call anyway so not too worry about that part. So I'm hoping by Wednesday or Thursday, I'll hear something back.
