Sorry, probably should have put this in with my earlier question regarding queries coming back from pure Android to Xperia Android. I have a HK Xperia Z and for the life of me I can't find how to set a data usage limit in any of the settings.
The reason I want to do this, is that on the Nexus it was the only way to individually prevent select apps from using background data, which I found on the Nexus reduced data usage and battery drain.
Is there another way of achieving the same thing in the Xperia version of Android? Am I blind? Being stupid? Or is there just no way of doing this with a Sony phone? It was one of the more acclaimed features of ICS when it came out.
Under settings
Just below Bluetooth - this is how it is on the Xperia s.
Then you can play with the settings and put a limit on the usage

Just realised I'm an idiot. I was still setting up my new phone and hadn't transferred over my SIM card, apparently if you don't have a SIM card installed there is no option to limit mobile data, which I guess makes sense, but I would have expected it to just be greyed out rather than removed completely. Since I switch from my Milestone to HTC IS, my data plan for the past 2 months exceed the limit of 1GB. I don't understand the reason behind. I 've never had such issue before while using my MM.
I have installed some data tracking software and notice within 2-3 hours, the download could be 14MB with my phone idle / on-standby.
I have to turn the sync of all service to manual. This is unacceptable.
Till now, I am not sure the actual cause. I only saw a lot of services are running in the background pulling data. Such as Calendar, HTC Sense, HTC Hub, Map, FB, etc, even though I have set it to manual sync.
If anyone has any idea on this, please update me. Many thanks.
I would suggest you try Network Counter (search in market, or www.mapemapps.com)
This will give you a way to track individual applications data usage.
Cascading effect - you'll know the rogue program that has been eating on your bandwidth
I'm not sure about your problem but I myself turned off HTC Sense and HTC Hub sync as I found it takes 5-10 mins for a single sync which consumes a great amount of power.
This was the reply from HTC, very disappointed:
"With reference to your query, when you do not use data connection you may turn it off: home page>menu>settings>wireless&networks>untick network.
We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience you are experiencing and thank you for your consideration. As this could be software bug, hence nothing much we can do about it.
Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services"
I don't mean to sound rude, but this is likely something simple. I doubt it has anything to do with the phone itself. Are you sure you just haven't forgotten to put the passwords in for your wifi networks or something.

Hi everyone,
To be honest I am not sure if this is specific to the Note but here is what happened.
Two days into my monthly plan I realized I have used up 1.5gb out my 6gb plan. So I installed "Data Manager" to monitor which app is sucking up all my 3G data. It turns out that "Android System" is constantly sucking up all my data. So I have my phone data off and turned on my wifi for the entire day today and it went through like 500mb (over wifi) a total of 2gb if you add the 1.5gb of data it sucked up over 3G.
I am worry as when I go out I won't have access to wifi and if I have my 3G data off the phone is pointless. What good is any smartphone without an active data connection?!
I have tried uninstalling some apps and turned the phone on/off but to no avail.
Any thoughts?
Check all your standard stock apps and see if any are set to automatically update. For example, I do not let apps from the market auto update, and I only let the market check over WiFi.
Most apps have that facility, and I have not had a problem so far. I am on a 2GB plan and have not used more than 2% so far each month. I am not out of home of the office often, but am for an hour each day and several hours at the weekend, and I have not noticed any increase.
I used to root and nail everything down. I recommend that, but am waiting for ICS, like many others.
Thanks for your reply. What I did was erase everything on the internal SD card. Then Android downloaded everything it needed again and now it is not sucking up data ATM. Hope this remains.

Hello all.
I work at a Best Buy in the mobile department. Today I had a lady come in and show me that her Atrix HD had used 85 MB of her 200 MB data package. She told me that in the previous month her phone had exceeded her allowance and that she was only two weeks through her current month, and that with her old phone she had barely used the 200 MB at all.
I checked the data usage settings and found out that AT&T Smart Wifi accounted for 60 MB of that 85 MB of usage.
What I would love is if anyone of you have the Atrix HD on the stock ROM with that app, for you to go into your settings and check to see if Smart Wifi is using inordinate data like her phone is. The reason why is simple: AT&T bundled the app into a software update for the phone and made it uninstallable. The average user is not going to figure out how to stop the app from chewing up data like that, so it's potentially costing a lot of people money. If you see similar data usage to what I'm describing, I would love it if you could post screenshots. I want to tip off the tech sites if I can corroborate this, because if this is a real issue and it goes public, we have a chance to make AT&T fix it.

Nothing on my Atrix HD shows AT&T apps using data at all, but I also skipped that portion of setup and use T-Mobile on my AT&T model.

I disabled mine. I don't know about the app itself using data (although it might download lists of AT&T access points or something), but I did see someone over on AtrixForums.com say that it seemed to make their home WiFi connection unstable when it was running. They were seeing cases where their home connection would disconnect and then subsequent data would be over the carrier connection. I tried it on for a while and generally didn't see that issue, but I saw a blip or two where it looked like the Smart WiFi app may have put the AHD's WiFi to sleep causing it to flip back to carrier data... Between that and the fact that I saw little value to the app, I disabled it.

I disabled that crap. Dumb app....

I use smart WiFi, but it's not in my list of apps using data. In that same list, you can disable background data if you have a data limit set. I've disabled background data for every app in the list, and it's made a HUGE difference in my data usage. Only used 114 mb this month, and the billing cycle ends in 2 days...
Deep rooted in the mAtrix HD...

I had to disable it also, it was disabling my wifi leading to crazy data usage.
+1 , Smart Wifi was acting like a Smart Ass , i deleted it too .
Hey guys - I'm thinking about getting this phone as it fits my needs and price range really well, and I love the design and the fact that it's basically a baby Z1 (which is a bit too pricey for me). My #1 requirement is being SD card expansion, as I listen to a lot of music on my phone. However I have been thinking about switching to the Google Music service because lately I haven't had the time to update my library constantly and it would be much easier to use something that does it for you.
I know Google Music added a save to SD feature recently (I want to be able to save my music to listen to it offline, and yes I'm aware you can't actually transfer it out of the phone but that's not the issue) but Google claims it's only for 4.4 devices. I was reading some comments on a blog and people were saying they had it working on various 4.1.2 and 4.2 devices as well, sometimes after clearing the cache (or something like that). I was wondering if somebody here could test this for me before I get the phone - I don't want to update to 4.3 because I hear the performance is very unoptimized on the SP and I'm not particularly crazy about using the latest Android, I'd rather everything run nice and smooth.
Thank you!

PS: Completely unrelated but maybe someone could answer for me: Where is the options button on the SP/other Xperia phones? All I see is Back, Phone, and the switch windows button. How do you reach settings menus on this UI?
Hello everybody,
I am using Note 9 for few months (was forced to upgrade from Note 4 what suddenly died ) and I have noticed very irritating thing.
My phone is connecting on mobile data even they are turned off 2 - 3 times per month.
First few months I thought that I somehow turned them on, but my phone is always fingerprint locked so that is not possible. Last time it happened when I was walking in the forest and once while I was sleeping in the bus... So it really is NOT some kind of accidental user mistake.
Problem is that I dont need mobile data all the time so I have them switched off almost always and use them only when required for email and etc just few times. I have offline GPS navigation and everything I need for work always works offline. Data plan was never economical for me.
Anybody noticed this?
I am trying to diagnose this issue and turn that off because I am paying on connection basis.
It is really irritating that phone is doing something on its own and doesnt care what user set up... I really think that user app cannot enable mobile data on its own, so I suspect OS itself...
This suggestion isn't exactly what you're looking for, but, one I find helps somewhat.
Go to SETTINGS > APPS & on each app, go to MOBILE DATA & turn off background data.
Not only does it curb unwanted data usage, but, may also offer a marginal improvement in battery life.
As for the issue you're experiencing, I haven't had that issue.
The only thing that I can imagine is possibly you have an app that has the ability/permission to turn on data, even if you have data turned off in the phones settings.
I've never heard of it being triggered by external means either, definitely an unusual issue.

Thank you for inspiration . This may be good starting point.
I have checked mobile data usage statistics. Sad that you can see only one month statistics and not like last week or last 24 hours. This week I had 2 unwanted connections again (today again happened during trip when phone wasnt even in my hands).
In last month there are few apps that are system installed, I have disabled mobile data on background on each of them:
- Samsung Experience Service
- Samsung Push Service
- Media
I will see if it will make any changes and report here in another days.
I will check maybe on stackexchange if its even possible for user application to enable mobile data withouth users approval. Is far as I know, even system administrator apps like Cerbersu cant do that...

Please keep us posted on your progress.
I'm not rooted, so, any system apps that I know that I won't use, I disable them, either via ADB commands, or, using the app Package Disabler Pro.
If you are rooted, I strongly recommend using SD Maid Pro. It's good not only for disabling apps, but, you can stop individual processes from starting up on boot on a per-app basis. (Among other several uses).
If you're interested & need links to either/all, let me know......

I wonder if data is turned on either by samsung to maybe location service or remote lock service?
Im not sure but does Note 9 has "aGPS"? Doesn't it connect to cell towers for faster position lock?
Do you have any anti theft software installed what pinging server once a while?

I have installed Cerberus as anti theft service. I doubt thats culprit of this because I had it installed previously on Note 2 and Note 4 fo about 6 years in total and never had this issue before. Maybe this is something different in new app version, but I am very suspicious about Samsung preinstalled stuff.
AGPS is of course present, like on any phone since around 2012. But you really dont need internet connection for using that. It should use coordinates from BTS mobile stations and those data should be obtained without internet. As far as I know...
Now its 2 days without data enabled issue. Few more days and we will know if disabling background data for those 3 services helped.
