I am rooted on 4.1.1
Can I install safestrap and install custom ROMs?
If yes does the ROM have to use the same kernel that is on my phone already?
I have done standard recovery ROMs on my prior phones but have zero experience with locked boot loaders and custom ROMs. I was under the impression that with root I can modify system files but can't change the kernel???? Or am I way off?
Any guidance would be appreciated.

Yea but there are custom roms build from your stock rom. There are also CM builds but without kexec or an unlocked bootloader there is stuff broken. Dont forget to donate for unlocked bootloaders, we need it bad!

That's what I was thinking I just wanted to make sure before bricking my phone.
So I can install safestrap and then install.... say the joker ROM ...... or any other ROM built on the stock one but my mileage may vary.
And if I'm reading about safestrap right it doesn't overwrite stock it merely boots along side it.... kind of like a dual boot PC but using the same kernel? And if I want to OTA I can because stock is still intact?
Oh, and I was first to donate on the bounty

Right on man. Create a rom slot and it never touches stock partition. Joker is good, but the rom I am working on now. It will be amazing
Installed safestrap, check.
Downloaded JokerROM and gApps, check.
Backup of stock, check.
New ROM slot, check.
Flashed JokerROM, check.
Doubling my bounty offer for BL unlock, check.
Loving my much faster Atrix, to be continued.
Thanks to all who contributed to at least having this ability so far!

It's all good man. Basically...with the encrypted bootloader, only "official" roms would allow the phone to boot. So if a custom rom was flashed, it would stay in recovery mode. With this, if everything goes right, the custom recovery will allow the flashing of roms and booting back into android. Hope that makes sense.
No risk. We're all here to help and learn.
The reason this is exciting is that it is the first step towards custom ROMs.
To explain further: Recovery is used on a stock phone to help you recover when you have screwed something up by taking you back to the same state the phone was in when you first unboxed it by loading the stock ROM. Loading a custom recovery, if 100% successful would then allow you to load custom ROMs. However, the X also has encryption that requires a signature on the ROM that is loaded before it will actually boot the phone with the custom ROM.
I think there is some stuff that I missed here but this is the general idea.
The one thing I'm not 100% certain of is if they're going need to work on the encryption still or if a custom recovery gets around that. In this case for some reason I'm getting the sense that the encryption isn't stopping birdman.
all i can say is gimmmmeeeeeeeeee
Great job, keep up the good work. Patiently waiting.

This is huge. We should see custom ROMs shortly after we see a released CR.
Unfortunately, we'll only see custom roms with stock kernels, which isn't quite ideal. I'm still enthusiastic about this though.
True, but we will get a 2.2 kernel when Froyo is released for the X and that will make things just that much better.
I say we look at the fact that we're going to get custom ROMs on a device that is supposed to be totally locked down, even though we will not have custom kernels.
I realize we're not going to be able to truly load an overclocked our undervolted kernel. But the custom ROMs are going to rock.
Please pardon my noobiness here, but how does the kernel affect the roms we can load? Mainly can I load a CM 2.2 rom?

Roms are in the future but kernels no
kernels not only help.you over clock but it effects the UI also but yea we can expect to see CM because of KOUSH

Nspbass - the kernel is what talks to all of the hardware on your phone and we would have to have an unlocked bootloader to put custom kernels on the phone. To load a custom ROM without a custom kernel means someone has to port CM 2.2 over to the X by making it work on a 2.1 kernel and we won't have a true version of Froyo.
However, when we get the 2.2ota update our rockstar devs will very likely get under the covers and give us a full 2.2 version.
One the + side they do have a dev phone that has 2.2.1 on it so we may see it sooner than we think.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: Check this out - we MAY be able to load alternate kernels in the future without unlocking the bootloader: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aMPUcY71Yc
HUGE PROPS to Birdman and Alldroid!
Latest from koush:
"koush: Nandroid worked on the Droid X. Trying to figure out why I don't have adb in "recovery" now though."
Seriously, nandroid backups are priceless. Great to see that koush is working this!
Its been like 6 days since they loaded clockworkmod recovery and nothing has come out yet...there may be major issues, at this rate official group will be out sooner.
Just wish motorola would have left it stock android like they did the d1

No... I think you're a bit confused about this. Flashing back to stock will still require a nandroid restore (idk if possible) or SBF flash.

No. If you don't understand what this does, you're better off not installing it at all!
Ken, you're still the champ!
GingerBlur RC1 is based on the Deodexed 1.2.6 framework and system, and this is the deodexed 1.5.7 update.zip. It does not seem like too far of a stretch for them to be compatible. I am not sure how this indicates that I don't understand what it does.

No, if you want to update to 1.57 and retain root, then you still have to do what everyone else does, flash 1.26 sbf, etc. etc. etc.

We need SS to have the ability to flash Roms. It doesn't do any good to have developed any Roms of there is no way for locked users to load them. Having SS is the first step in the right direction.
Sent from non rooted motoX :'(
SS allows me to run a rooted copy of the latest AT&T update (.54), and I can still flash back to the original firmware (.51) if I wanted to start over.
I was on 4.4 and downgraded to 4.2. Rooted using Rockmymoto and also ran MotoWPnomo.
Can i install a recovery and flash a ROM? Wasn't sure and wanted to ask before I fubar my phone.
Its not that simple because of the locked boot loader.
First of all why do you need a custom ROM on this phone? its vanilla android with a few good enhancements that you will lose with a custom ROM.
With a locked bootloader your only alternative is to use safestrap. The developer choose not to make a thread on xda. You will have to visit rootzwiki and find it. However, you should really understand the danger of having a locked bootloader and messing with safe strap and custom Roms. If something goes bad or you don't know what you're doing you might end up with a brick.
You should do a little more research before continuing. But now that you have root access xposed framework is really all you need. Combined with gravitybox there's no reason to mess with safestrap or custom Roms.
The Search bar is your best friend.

You need to have an unlocked bootloader to install a custom recovery and to flash a rom. All models should be unlockable except the AT&T and Verizon models. However, they do offer developer editions that are unlockable. If you have a device that can't be unlocked, you could try safestrap. Safestrap acts like a customer recovery by allowing you to flash roms made for safestrap to rom slots on your phone to while avoiding touching the primary system. You can also make backups and restore. If your bootloader is locked this would be your only option to flash roms.
