Hi all,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001. It's just over an year old, bought in January last year. The warranty period of 1 year is up
The phone has been working absolutely fine till now, and I love the phone. But, yesterday night, I noticed that the signal for my networks was not available. I thought it must be some temporary problem from the network provider, but in the morning too, I found the same thing.
The signal keeps coming and going.. intervals are random.
Even if the signal bars are all there and full, I am unable to make any calls, or receive calls. If I make a call to the mobile, it says that phone is out of coverage area, even when the bars are full.
I was able to receive and send a few sms... but after that, nothing. Can't send sms too.
Anything that can solved by myself, or do I have to take the phone to a care centre?
I have tried putting the sim in another phone, and it works fine.. no problems. So, the sim is not the issue, it's definitely the phone.
What might have caused it? It did not fall or anything recently. I use it with care.
And if I have to leave it in the care centre, what precautions do I need to take? I will be taking backup of the contacts. Should I uninstall apps like Whatsapp, and Kik Messenger?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Seems that maybe your internal antenna is damaged. Did you drop your phone?
Also if you are leaving it with a service centre it is up to you to uninstall/delete any private apps/messages

Thanks for the reply. So, it seems like I will have to take it to a service centre. Hmph.
Yea, I will take backup of my contacts, and uninstall the private apps, or lock them with app locker.

Don't lock them with app locker. It can be easily bypassed , its better to make a backup on your external card and then uninstall the apps.

How do I make backups?
Also, I can take backups and uninstall the apps on the phone, but what about apps that can't be uninstalled, like all Google apps.... Gmail, Google+. They cannot be uninstalled, and anyone can access my mail from there, or Google+ account.
I dislike such integrated things which compromise the security and privacy. It's good that they are personalizing the phones, but on the other hand, in cases like these, and in case of mobile theft, it's a big risk for security and privacy.
you can always install titanium backup and uninstall the integrated software also.. plus titanium backup can also backup everything on your cell..

I think Titanium Backup only works on rooted phones, and mine isn't rooted .
After the problem started occurring on my phone, I had put the sim in an older Nokia phone, and I had been using that. Today, just to test, and also as a feeling, I put the sim back into the Samsung phone, and strangely, it's working now. It's catching the network/signal, and also working normally. I was able to send sms, send and receive calls, and was also able to take a call and talk for long without any problem. Although, I did notice that the signals keep getting low sometimes, reducing to one or two bars, but they haven't gone out fully.
I think it looks like some kind of software problem? I am thinking of doing a factory reset, if the problem becomes worse, or I encounter the problem again, of no signal at all. It might be worth a try, and I wont have to take it to a service centre, where they will definitely charge money, even if it isn't a hardware issue.
Has anyone encountered anything similar, or see anything like this, on any other Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 phone?
Does anyone know of a free app for contact backup and restore? I have two free apps for backup, but they don't restore.

Just curious if this happend to anyone else. I went to add a new phone number on my phone this morning, but I saw that all my contacts are now labeled "Unknown".
I lost all my contacts.
I did look at my missed calls over the night and there were 3. two friends and it said what time. An "Unknown" number and didn't say what time they called. I can delete the missed calls, but I cannot delete the "Unknown" missed call.
Is it possible someone called my phone and killed my contacts? I only can get the numbers from my history of calls. which is around 10-15 numbers.
Don't know if anyone can help or not. I do have the tilt and am with t-mobile.
Dutty's latest
i sure hope someone can help you cuz i went through a similar experience TWICE in the last year since i've had my kaiser (last time was TWO DAYS AGO when my beta-based ROM expired cuz of a builtin timebomb). so i feel your pain, but to a minimum degree because i was fortunate enough to have recent backups so i didn't lose more than 10 days of texts, call history, and contacts in both my experiences.
i hope you find a way out...but believe me! there WILL BE a next time! like it or not, data loss is sure to happen to everyone, possibly many times, in some form over their lifetimes.
fortunately, with windows mobile, you can use "pimbackup" (just search for it on xda!) to make regular backups to your memory card of all such otherwise-difficult-to-backup pieces of data like texts, call history, and contacts. in my opinion, it is a much more reliable and manageable way to take backups of precious information than using activesync! in case you are unable to recover your data this time, at least take precautions now to be prepared next time it happens!
IDEA!!! try pimbackup right NOW...look at its logs carefully when it is performing the backup to see how many contacts and call records it can retrieve...who knows, maybe it can read the database in case the OS's native routines are shot. if you think pimbackup is able to see data that your OS can't, then you might want to think about restoring the backup to see if it fixes things...
good luck!
thanks, i will try this when i get home from work today.
I keep all my contacts on my sim card. not sure if it can grab that.
I got my Optimus 2x Today, the one from Netherlands. And I have a big problem. I can't make calls. When I dial the number, it is calling and after 10-15 seconds it disconnets. Happens everytime, anywhere i call. I tried Hard Reset 2 times, but it haven't fixed that problem.
And also I can't send massages, they are just not send, and there appears that ! warning yellow triangle.
I switched my SIM card back to my old phone (I8910 Omnia HD) and everything works on it like a charm...
I don't know what to do now
You would need to add your providers account information to your phone. I'm far away from being a specialist in these things, so please wait for some one else to help you. But it's not a big deal to get your phone running properly.
Slap me if I'm wrong.
Kind off experiencing the same, although it is not constantly, but intermittent for me. however when phone calls start to fail they keep on failing, untill i pull the battery after which it works for awhile.
I am now having this with wifi aswell ....
Was i too ambitious removing those apps, following that other thread ? ill install a different launcher and see if that changes anything ....

I have been to the Orange shop yesterday in my city, they checked my sim and said that this is a fault of sim card. They gave me a new card and now everything works like a charm.
I've had the same problems and also some noise when coming near monitors (didnt had this with any previous phones) so I decided the cancel my contract renewal with this phone. Returned it to T-mobile and i'll just wait a few more months to see what will come! I just didn't want to take a risk to use the VIP service within the 7 days you can decide to agree on the contract or not. And also, having to use the VIP service while your phone is just 2 days old gives me a bad feeling about this phone (also reading other stories about bugs and stuff).

I have exactly the same problem with calls as you. An issue this huge is intolerable in a 500€ phone or, well, any phone. I think I'll have to ask for a new device or a refund. I'm really dissapointed, I really liked the phone otherwise.
Try another sim card in the O2X. If the phone still does it then it is faulty.

I am having the same problem. Any solution for this except changing to 2g? Data is disconnected when I checked in the settings. It is constantly trying to reconnect.
When this happens, I can't receive/send sms or make calls. The only way is to restart the device.
This only happens at some locations (i.e. my workplace) but doesn't encounter this problem at home.
Is this a problem with the kernel, radio, or hardware?
I am on MCR r10 by the way.
Radio/baseband: 1035.21_20110315
Kernel: Tried all available kernels and still getting the same problem.
Hello,
I've been trying to figure this out for days now and I can't seem to find any permanent solution. My Nexus 6 on Sprint (Android L 5.0 / LRX21O / Up to Date PRL) 50%-75% of the time sends duplicate SMS messages to recipients. On my end I see one SMS message outbound and it sends without issue. On the other end, people will get the same message one to six times. I've seen it myself on a separate Sprint phone and a Verizon phone.
From what I can tell, sometimes updating the profile helps for a few minutes and that's it. It doesn't matter if I uninstall/disable the stock Google Messenger or Hangouts. This issue happens in every single 3rd party SMS messenger I've used. The only time I've got the problem to stop is if I force 3G service and not the Global or LTE settings. Strangely enough, If I'm on LTE, and I switch to WiFi, the issue remains. If I force 3G and then go on WiFi, the issue is gone.
I've tried uninstalling certain applications that come stock with the phone.. I've tried not updating any applications. I've done factory resets (and I sent an SMS to test without doing 1 update) and it still duplicated. I returned the phone and got another phone. Same issue. On the Sprint end, they changed some settings on my phone and had me reset the network connection via the phone *#*# etc. menu. That fixed the issue, and it lasted 24 hours. Upon either a reboot, or perhaps just a power cycle, the problem returned.
Any ideas as to why this is happening? I have zero Data issues. Hangouts works fine. Youtube, Gmail, Chrome etc are all super fast without issue.
Thank you in advance.

I always just thought this was an issue on Sprints side and not the phone itself. I just started with Sprint myself when I picked up the Nexus, prior to this I had Verizon.
My girlfriend however has been with Sprint forever and no matter what ROM or phone she had, this issue would pop up from time to time.
Now that I'm with Sprint she's told me a few times that she's gotten duplicate messages from me. It seems to happen when we are in spotty service areas from what I can tell. I haven't even bothered calling Sprint like you have though... I just chalked it up as Sprint service is sketchy.

The issue here is that it's not popping up from time to time...it's pretty consistent. I've been with Sprint for at least 7 years and have never ran into the issue until this phone. My prior phone was a Nexus 5...and I have a galaxy s3 here which I can't duplicate the issue on.
We all need to complain to Sprint so they either fix it on their side, or put pressure on Google to fix it on their own side.

Yep, this has been happening to me. My girlfriend started complaining she was getting my text 2x-3x for each message. She is on T-Mo, I'm on Sprint. Tested with a few coworkers on different providers and only 1 out 4 received it more than once and they are on Verizon. Rebooted, tried updating PRL and data profile. She hasn't complained about it doing it anymore but we will see. Super frustrating

I've tried every combination you can think of:
1. Google Messenger as default with and without Hangouts installed.
2. Hangouts as default with and without Google Messenger installed.
3. SMS Messenger AOSP, ChompSMS, 8sms, Textra, Handcent, all with and without Google Messenger and or Hangouts installed.
I've tried forcing 1x, updating PRL and Profile and then going back to LTE. Same issue. Multiple Hard Resets and Data Network Resets. Only ONCE the Sprint support person did something on their end ("Changed a number") and out of nowhere the duplicates stopped. But it only lasted 1 day while using Google Messenger.
This happened to me with my G3 on Att, it just stopped one day and I still don't know what started it

Lol. Yeah. Doesn't hurt. I'm on the phone with Sprint again and they said they are making a ticket with their engineers.
Just picked mine up today from sprint. My buddy who is also on sprint made me aware that he was getting repeat sms from me already. It's funny because I would always complain that I was getting them from him before I jumped to sprint. He's on a LG G2 though.

Don't get me wrong.. the phone is absolutely amazing. I love it. I can't go back to my Moto X, which to me was one of the best Android phones ever made. Again, what people don't understand is this is a REAL issue. People are very quick to say that "bad service" caused it. We're all smart enough to know that if you have bad service, 1 or 2 duplicates can happen, on occasion. Not repeatedly in a full service area or on WiFi.
As an Update:
Everything Sprint tried has failed. However, my original debug information holds true:
1. If the phone is set to 3G mode only: The problem is SOLVED.
2. If the phone is on WiFi, AFTER being set to 3G mode only: The problem is SOLVED.
3. If the phone is set to LTE mode only: The problem REMAINS, unless you are in a no LTE service area and revert to 3G or less.
4. If the phone is on WiFi, AFTER being set to LTE mode only: The problem REMAINS.

I just posted my issue.
Ok everyone figured I'd come here to where the experts live. Haven't been here in awhile.
Recently my S8, wifes S8, and our sons S8+ all have the same issues.
The first issue is texts get stuck "sending". This happens with WiFi on or off, with wifi calling on or off, and I even tried changing off LTE to just 4G/3G/2G and even 2g in settings to see if that would help. I'm on the latest firmware from TMO ending in QEF, well we all are.
The other one is apps like FB and others aren't alerting but they will show the number of alerts even after they've been checked. I've reinstalled these apps and the problem persists, and then I can reboot my phone or wifes phone and all the alerts start working again for awhile and then die eventually.
The texting issue though persists and is random when it will hang and when it doesn't.
According to TMO rep at the store it's a bug in the firmware with bixpy that was pushed out, but I frankly don't buy it and figured I'd hit the guru's up here and see if you guys have any thoughts.
Thanks in advance guys and gals....
I too have had the random "texts get stuck sending" issue. I haven't had it in a while though (now that I've said that I'm sure I will).
I unfortunately don't have any suggestions.
I ended up using googles version of messages due to this. Only on stock text app do i have any problems anymore. I also noticed on the stock app that my phone would say "sending" when the other side would actually get it, but it was at random.
You don't have a cellspot repeater or router do you? Last time I had it, my device was hung and needed reboots. Just a thought.
Thanks for the feedback, yes I have a cell spot, but I also have the issue other areas of town too with no real specific place thatbit always happens.
I'm going to reverse back from the qef firmware and see if that resolves things. This has been so annoying, and it just started about two weeks ago.
Thanks again everyone.
I have had the same issue with sending texts too. I have been using the stock messenger app. I may just switch to textra.
Same issue here. A temporary fix, try turning on airplane mode and off. Works for me a times
Also happening to me on the XAA firmware (have unlocked NA variant) with the stock messaging and Google messages.
So I'll ask the question begging to be asked (at least by me): How does one disable this messaging app and use "stock messaging" app?
Thanks in advance....

Just get a app disabler for Samsung from play store like BK Disabler.
If I were you, just download Android Messages. It's simple and fast.
However, I do not recommend disabling stock messaging, unless you don't like getting EAS (Amber/Weather/Presidential Alert)
Having the exact same issues and it's driving me crazy because I really like this phone. I don't get notifications for any of my apps but when I open them I can see the new messages. A reset seems to fix the problem but it only lasts about an hour before it starts doing the same thing. I've tried using different messaging apps but the same thing. And the fact that I don't get notifications for other apps it can't just be a text messaging issue right?
Happened to me for almost 2 months but haven't had an issue in about a week. Called t mobile, they created a ticket and said they'll be working on it. Few days after speaking to them, problem went away.
This has been happening intermitantly for me as well. It's been bad the past three days. I'm currently in coversations with T-mo's engineering team and they seem to be coming up with a bunch of dead ends. It's not a location based thing as it's been happening over a 20 mile radius in the past few days for me. Other people on T-mo network that I'm freinds with or I work with aren't having any problems. I'm wondering if just a fresh SIM card could solve it?
I have data connection although it seems a little sluggish compared to when I originally got the phone. Similar to OP I've tried all the "G's" modes, with wifi calling on, with it off, with cellular network preffered with wifi calling on and off. With Textra, with stock messaging app. I've factory reset to no avail. I've pulled and re-inserted the SIM card to no avail. This is incredibly frustrating for a flagship phone on a network where I've had no previous issues.
UPDATE: T-Mobile sent me a new SIM card and that seems to have cleared up the issues. Not sure if it just hapened to coincide with T-Mo tower fixes or anything else like that in my area but I'm back to normal operation. Anybody else experiencing this I recommend you push customer service to send you a new sim.
my husband and i are having a strange issue where we can message pictures and video clips to other people that don't have the s8, or aren't on tmobile and they'll send and receive just fine, but when we try to send to each other, the first attempt to send fails, but the second attempt goes through?

i had same problem one of you is not using stock message app, if you check it ull find pictures all there i think its new messages plus thing
So I've got a couple problems that I hope someone here can help me fix.
I've only had my phone for a few days and things were going great until this morning. I received a text message and replied to it, but my response just sat on "sending..." until it failed. Once it failed I was able to tap on it to send it again, and it went through. Tested sending other messages to the same person and one other and I'm having the same issue. One person has a Galaxy S8 and the other an iPhone SE, so it's not limited to just Android or iOS users. All texts I try to send sit on "sending..." forever until they fail, then they send right away if I tap to resend. I've tried every supposed fix that I could find online to people that were having the same problem on older Samsung phones, but nothing has helped. The one solution that seems like it might help, I can't find on this phone. I've used both the stock Samsung Messages app and the Google Messages app, they both refuse to send messages and I can't find this setting in either app or in the phone settings. The setting I am referring to is called "message center" and it's supposed to be in the settings for the messages app, where you can change a number that corresponds to your carrier to allow text messaging or something like that. Like I said, I have no problem receiving texts.
My other issue is one I actually ran into on my Note 4 I was using before I got the 9. I had 8.1 installed on the 4 but I tried everything I could find online to try and fix this issue too, but didn't really have any luck. Now the problem has returned on my 9, I can't download updates or new apps from the Play Store. They just sit on "downloading". The download might finally start after letting it sit for an hour or so, but they won't initiate right away. So I've taken to using APKPure or APK Mirror to do my updates.
I've tried many things to solve both issues, but nothing has helped. The only thing I've not done is a factory reset because I really don't want to go through that already. Plus I did factory resets/clean ROM installs on the Note 4 and the Play Store issue always came back. I'm at wits end and am about ready to switch to an iPhone for good. Really don't want to as I much rather prefer Android and especially the Note phones, the 9 is a beast. But I can't take this Play Store issue much longer and not being able to send texts is not acceptable. So any help on either issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Have you tried changing your network settings? Have you made any modifications to your phone? Is play store problem on WiFi, mobile data, or both? Have you cleared data in play store and services? I think if you've had the problem with two of your phone, is there some commonality between the two? Some none mainstream apps or modification you did to both? If you've tried any and all fixes you've seen on Google, I think you need to factory reset, no point jumping through hoops to fix it if you're not willing to do a reset once at least. There are limited backup capabilities without root that you could use. But really you want to reset, and use as close to factory settings as you can for a while and see if the problem is still there before adding all your own apps and stuff.
What mods have you done to the note 9? Doesn't sound like a stock setup you got going there. Are you using the stock factory sms app or did you download an apk of it from apk pure?
My next question would be what network are you on and where and what model device.?

The text message issue seems to have resolved itself. I'm hoping it was just an issue with my network and won't return. I'd still really like to find the "message center" setting that's mentioned so many times online though in case I need it in the future.
I didn't bother listing what network I'm on since these issues appear to happen on many models of phones and all networks, but here is my info. 512gb model Note 9 on Spectrum Mobile, who is using Verizon's network I believe. My Note 4 on the other hand is a T-Mobile version running on their network through Straight-Talk.
Both issues happened on wifi and lte.
Like I said, I've done everything listed online I could find. I've cleared app cache, app data, reset network settings, booted into safe mode, booted into recovery to clear cache, installed the absolute newest versions of play services and play store apks, and whatever else I've read or thought of. And like I said, I've done clean installs/factory resets on my Note 4 to try and fix the play store issue and it always comes back. So I highly doubt doing so will permanently fix it on the 9.
I've been using Android since it first was released and have been in IT for much longer, but this play store issue has me stumped. The 9 isn't modified in any way other than running a dark theme from the Samsung Theme app. I guess if nothing turns up here I will give it a few days and then do a reset if it doesn't resolve itself, reinstall apps slowly so I can see if one of them is responsible even though safe mode ruling them out didn't work.
You don't need to worry about the message center, I'm pretty sure it's not even a thing anymore, I remember it from the days of the Nokia 5110 haha. If you really want to know it and your messages app has a setting to add it you can call your network provider for it or look on Google for your networks message center, but I'm sure it's not even necessary, especially if your test messaging works, if you needed to enter the message center and you didn't, you wouldn't be able to text at all. As I said, I'm positive it's a thing just from the olden days anyway.
As for play store, I have had a similar problem in the past but it was always just a short lived issue that resolved itself, but if it's happening to you repeatedly then I don't know, other than a reset.
