hi there,
first off, im sorry for being a total noob.
i was trying to look for a full guide to install Criskelo ICS ROM v2.
i found an online guide from the site rootgalaxynote dot com
but its for the older version.
i was wondering if i can do this step but install using the V2 or follow the steps, install the older version then use clockworksmod to load v2?
once again, please accept my apologies as i have never touched an android in my life.. im so new, my note is still in the mail and i havent even received it yet.
Go the the development section find criskelo v2 and follow the instructions in the first post? Why go to another site when the instructions are right here

hi there,
i was there, the thing is that i want to make sure i understand the instructions the instructions
From GB:
Install ics repack by chainfire via mobile odin-reboot-reboot into revovery-full wipe-install criskelo ics.
Click to collapse
so before i run the steps above, i should install clockworkmods and titanium backup to backup my current rom and apps rite?
then i download the ics repack by chainfire and the criskelo v2 mod
then install mobile odin and install the mod?
Very simple as ABC.
First you use PC odin and flash a single file called chain fire repack.tar
This ROM is already rooted.
Boot up and install triangleaway1.25.apk
Copy your ROM to SDcard
Reboot to recovery using the CWM app in Your note
Wipe data.factory reset wipe the other one below the list. I forgotten the name
Wipe devalik cache from advance settings
Install the zip file called Criskelo or any other ROM from Sdcard.
Once you are done reboot and enjoy your new rom.

This does however increase the binary counter thus voiding warranty. By taking some extra steps you'll be able to upgrade to any ICS rom without increasing the binary counter.
What I did was I flashed one of the pre-rooted roms found in a thread in the dev section. After that I flashed the CF Root kernel for the rom I installed (I used the pre-rooted LA6 rom so I used the CF kernel for LA6).
Now you have full root and CWMR so you can flash any rom you like. For ICS roms, install Mobile Odin, flash the ICS LP1 repack, reboot to recovery, do a full wipe and install any ICS rom you want to try.
Pre-rooted stock roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
For CF-Kernel check step two "2. I Want ROOT + CWM" of this thread and download the appropriate files for the pre-rooted kernel you flashed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360

To my knowledge Triangle Away only does exactly what is says, it will remove the yellow triangle after you've flashed a custom kernel through pc Odin and thus having triggered the binary counter. To my knowledge Triangle Away is not able to reset the counter though I could be wrong as I've never used it myself. There is however a thread explaining how to remove both the triangle and reset the counter using a usb JIG: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354888
Counter is reset
using triangle away does reset the counter as well as removing the triangle also says your rom is samsung original even if it is not!.
you must use the correct ics version to do this one that does work is I9220LP1-N7000-ICS-REPACK worked just fine on my note. It does not work on all current versions of ICS. enjoy
Thanks a lot for the info! I really didn't know and I thought I read somewhere that it didn't reset the counter.
does the triangle away work for GB phones? just wondering
No

Other way you could try
Hi, maybe you already flashed, but this is how I did it. No problems at all.
Starting from stock GB. (Or you can flash stock through ODIN)
Used CF-Root to get Root and CWR on the phone.
Downloaded and flashed Abyss Kernel 4.2
rebooted recovery
flashed ICS ROM from sdcard.
Worked perfectly well for me.
Hope this helps.

As soon as you flash the rom, abyss kernel will be overwitten (you get CWM).
Now a piece of advice, there are great risk on flashing any rom based on leak repack, there is an issue with the kernel and the eMMC, which basically can fry your phone (if you are unlucky).
I personally decided to flash back to stock GB.... just in case. I'm not willing to gamble with my note, but that is me.

thanks for the input... was kinda thinking that while doing alot of reading... im still considering a GB rom or an ICS rom
hi,
after reading so many post on rooting and secure kernels I am still unsure if I lose root, if I flash abyss kernel after beeing rooted (Super Su Busybox).
As I want to do back ups as well as restores I think I need a secure Kernel after rooting. (I am on stock ICS LPF rooted).
Again I am not installing any MOD or ROMS just a rooted Stock ICS.

Do not use abyss as safe kernel for your ics it will not boot up. Use speedmod k3-6 or goku as a safe kernel. Use abyss only for wiping purposes and then flash a custom rom.
thx, that's important info. will try to find those kernels.
If you do have a link just in your hands would be nice if you could copy it for me.
TIA for your efforts

Do you mean to use only stock kernel and use abyss only when trying to install any custom ROMs. Is it not possible to use CWM instead of abyss kernel to flash the custom rom. is abyss kernel is just another method to root the note?
Hi,
I think I have problem here...
I have official ICS 4.0.3 (XXLQ2) and CF-Root,
I just flashed with abyss kernel and phone is not booting....
How can I flash to another kernel? I tried Volume down, Power and home button, but I got in download mode...
and also, which is safe kernel to use?
I flashed CF-root kernel by ODIN and now it boots normally
Basically Abyss is kernel for GB. That is the reason why every one advise when ICS rom, if you flash Abyss, do not leave CWM but reboot (not device) but the recovery. and after wiping flash the custom ICS immediately. I suggest you go back to GB and upgrade to ICS officially, and get rooted. (but remember ICS stock ROMs are not safe for backup, specially restoring, since you mentioned backups)

Use speedmod k3-6 for safe ics custom kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673072
Here is goku kernel for ics. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710937

Download any ics rom u like, put in into external, after abyss full wipe, then install it from ex.sd.

Well, thanks for the various info, however, my problem is still not solved.
Just to avoid misunderstandings I say it again: I do not want to install a custom kernel or so. Just keep my stock ICS rooted. But.... of course I would like to have the possibility to make backups and restore. As this involves the risk of bricking my device, I want to install a Kernel, which is at least considered to be safe ( I know no guarantee at all).
So the advice from "Jonpaslim" seems to be the answer.
this brings me to another problem........ I am in China, so I can't download from File-sharing services, as they are blocked. i can download from drop box, box or any other server also from xda......but I couldn't find a usable link for the k3-6 or Goku. those files don't seem to be so big ones. I wonder, if it may be possible for s.o. here to upload to a private cloud like dropbox or box or sugar sync etc.. and give me the download link.
I thank you for all your efforts in advance
greetings from China

This all i can say about the safety of speedmod, never i once read that somebody brick their phone by wiping on speedmod. I trust speedmod myself.
little help
guys one small but important help
i'm going to buy note in just few days probably tomrw
i will buy it on gb version
so what i want to know exactly
1. if i root the gb version with chainfire method of rooting (is it safe to go and keep the device brick bug free) or any other method should i follow
2. if i want to flash any of ics version first i have to flash abysskernel is it ok (means is it brick proof method)
3.abyss kernel is best for upgrade and downgrade and to do nandriod backup with full wipe and it does not brick the device, as much i have read about all this thing, is my knowledge about note to upgrade, downgrade is ok
4.after upgrading to any ics custom rom from gb version i have to keep rom on speedmod kernel is it totaly safe method, and in future if i want to downgrade from ics to gb again i have to flash abyss or same can be done by speedmod
5.speedmod kernel is safe to do full wipe or to flash any modification not the rom
or lastly should i keep my device on gb version without root and wait for expert dev or team samsung to provide us with best solution to keep our device bug free
plz guys appropriate answer will be appreciated
thanks in advance

1. GB ROM,s are safe,
2. If you are upgrading from GB, you don't need abyss kernel, use it own kernel for wiping
3. You are right, abyss kernel is safest, because its a GB ketnel with its own CWM, but note, abyss does not boots ICS
4. Speedmod kernel is safe, but for extra safety use abyss kernel for up/down grading
5. It shoud be safe because buggy feature is disabled, but still I can not find solid confirmation, that hardbrik does not happened on this kernel after multiple .wipe and cache clearing, but, also, I didn't heard that hardbrik happened, so i will use abyss kernel for wiping before solid confirmation, that speedmod kernel is safe

You welcome,
You can upgrade from GB to ISC with samsung Kies,(as i did) it should be safe, anyway, if something goes wrong, you still have valid warranty.
or, you can use abyss kernel and manually upgrade from cwm. (You can find thread, where all stock ICS rom's are listed,
Also, there are a lot of step-by-step instructions on this forum or you can find also video toutorial on youtube or rootgalaxynote.com, just in case, not to forget anything)
I recomend upgrade to ICS, it's way batter than GB.
But after upgrade, you have to move to safe kernel, like speedmod, (already there are several safe roms for ics for example, last one:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749863)
There are also methods to flush to safe kernel and root without having binary count increased.

I noticed nothing you mentioned, screen is fine, black and other colors are also fine (at least as i can judge)
Also, I'll recomend GL_NOTECORE, Flash it with ODIN immediately after upgrade to official ICS, you will get root, CWM and MMC_CAP_ERASE disabled, also many extra tweaks and doubled 2D/3D performance
Hope to not disturb, today my Note arrived, so right now i got 4 hours with it. Impressions?!? You all know, is a great device.
So, since this morning i start reading and reading, but are alot of infos here, i lose some and i become confuse, so i will need some help in my order questions.
My build number is GINGERBREAD.XXLA6 (i understand users with it can easily brick the device), so here all my questions:
PS: Please post links too:
1- first step is to root and install cwm (how and link please), or i need to flash a new kernel to be sure my device will never be bricked (how and link please)?
2- after i flash custom kernel and install a new rom, i can make wipe all from custom recovery? After that danger situationto brick it will be forever gone?
3- i would like to unlock the sim network, it is working and it is safe?
4- i know about warranty, but i suppose i can allways go back to stock (i need stock kernel too or only rom?)
Dont know what to ask more, users who will read and write, please, write ALL STEPS, 1by1, from first to last, what i need to do, this phone was a big effort for me to buy it, without any jokes.

As long as you are on GB kernel, you are safe to wipe.
1. Check my sig. for excellent rooting guide by Dr.Ketan (post #3 for LA6), it will help in installing cwmr too.
2. You can wipe on any of the safe custom ICS kernels (if you flash custom ICS rom) just do not wipe on stock ICS kernels.
3. check galaxy_S unlock in play store to unlock, I dont think it is unsafe to do it (except some carrier terms, may be)
4. Once you flash stock firmware you will be back to normal. flashing stock firmware will also change kernel to stock.
I would suggest read a lot before doing anything as flashing custom roms, kernels or modding always include some risk.

No prob, and by the way, why don't you simply flash pre-rooted GB rom (look for it in my sig.), it is already rooted and includes CWM recovery too. All you have to do is to just flash it and then flash any custom rom of your choice using cwm recovery.
Reason why I suggested flashing pre-rooted GB is that your rom seems to be non directly rootable and I think only option is to flash pre-rooted rom. (atleast as per my understanding)

After that, since that pre-rooted rom have root, i can install cwm right?

If you choose to flash pre-rooted GB rom, then no need to install cwm separately, as it already includes cwmr, you just have to choose some custom rom and flash it using cwm recovery.
I was about to suggest you the other method of updating to stock ICS first and then rooting but it will take more time and it is of no use as your end motive is to flash custom roms

2- then flash custom kernel .tar via odin
3- root and install cwm (if the custom kernel include already, dont know)
4- install custom rom (from cwm) since i can wipe after
Is ok this way?
So many questions, sorry guys }{

Step 2 u can skip as its already done (dont know about root but definatly cmw) u wil not need root anyway as u can power down phone and reeboot into recovery via 3 button trick.
May i add step 6 install triangle away from play store as it will remove the triangle At boot as u flashed a kernal using odin.
As allways read and read again as uay already know that this phone has the brick problem but if u do everything by the book u will b ok.

That's is completely fine if you want to go this way , step 1 and 2 are okay but step 3 not required as flashing custom kernel via odin will root and install cwmr. You will get yellow triangle and custom binary count by flashing custom kernel, which can be reset using triangle away. check rooting guide in my sig, once you are on stock ICS or ask here.
Checked above post after I posted mine, seems like its getting confusing here, okay so once you are on Stock ICS you have two methods to root and install cwmr,
1. once you are on stock ICS just flash some custom kernel using odin, it will root your device and flash cwmr too, then use triangle away app to remove yellow triangle and reset binary count. (method 2 in rooting guide in my sig.)
OR
2. Once you are on stock ICS, follow method 1 in rooting guide in my sig. in this you can root using stock recovery and then can flash custom kernel using mobile odin, so no yellow triangle or custom binary count.

Good you clarify me
5% left from download and then i will flash the update to ics.
let me see if i understand, after update to ics i will flash a custom kernel via odin (this will have root and cwm too), i will restart the phone and install yellow triangle and reset binary count
then i must root using stock recovery as you say and install again a custom kernel since the yellow triangle doesnt show up anymore? or you want to say i can flash custom rom since the triangle dont show up? -> confuse!

No, don't follow what you have understood so far about rooting. these are 2 different methods for root, check rooting guide in my sig. it will clear everything.
And just want to make sure, are you downloading ICS rom or are you talking about percentage in kies?

No need to have root to flash custom kernel via odin, it will root it automatically.
Do you have Samsung drivers installed on your PC? If yes then try restarting your phone once again.

You don't have to remove yellow triangle to install custom rom, you can still do it. Traingle away is just to remove the yellow triangle and to reset binary count for warranty purpose. Yes, you can wipe now, as you are on safe kernel.
Download any custom rom, which you wish to install, put it in your SD, boot in CWMR , perform full wipe and then flash the rom .zip.

hi every body i'm new member and it's first time to make update to my galaxy note GT-n7000
i c in topic steps to make that update but i don't understand what i need to do for this step
Make sure to run CM9 or an AOSP-based ROM : FLASHING FROM STOCK ICS OR ROMS BASED ON STOCK ICS WILL RESULT IN A BRICK
if any one can tell me more about that what is this and how can i do this?? thank u
Which rom are you trying to flash? What that means is not to flash from a stock ics kernel as it will result in a superbrick. You need to first flash a safe kernel such as phillz or hydracore, unless you're on gb in which case you're safe to flash.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
remeber to flash from any ICS rom it is always advice to flash using a safe kernel to prevent brick

Can't flash from stock anyway. Zip wont pass signature verification. I think that warning is aimed at people using cf-root or old franco/speedmod kernels before CAP-ERASE was disabled.

that warning is for anyone thats on stock ICS and wants to flash a custom rom, whether CM or TW based. And yes also those old kernels. If you want CM9, download the CM9 kernel from here and, put it in your sd card, and flash from recovery. Reboot BACK into recovery, don't reboot the phone. Make sure you download the CM9 rom and gapps, and put it your sd card before. Then wipe data, and flash CM9 once back into recovery. The same way if you want CM10. You can also use the Universal Hydracore kernel
how can i know my ROM???

Settings - About phone. Are you on stock? Non-rooted? If stock and non rooted, then first flash Philz ICS kernel based on your current firmware. It will give you root, then wipe cache/dalvik after. Then reboot your phone, let it settle for a few minutes, then go back to recovery and flash CM9/CM10/Hydracore kernel, reboot back into recovery, then flash whatever rom you want, with the neccessary wipes. Its safe to flash from the philz kernel as well, but its hex patched, still could be unsafe to wipe from..
Also, if you want CM10/Jellybean, then you must either use the CM10 or hydracore kernel, don't flash cm10 from the philz kernel

Yes Entropy512 has expressed his doubts about the safety of so called "hex hacked" kernels (ie: offending brickbug byte changed fro a one to a zero), but he also says the only way to test for safety is to wipe and hope the phone doesn't freeze. Well I have done heaps of wipes on Philz kernels and no problems, but that could just be luck right? So for further confirmation of safety, I flashed CWM.zip ( the lethal one that Entropy has banned and has bricked heaps of phones) on a Philz kernel. From there I did Factory Resets, wipes, formatting of partitions, you name it and all operations passed in a breeze. If Brickbug wasn't disabled, I would have bricked on the first Factory reset. Philz kernels are definitely safe:good:

I read that and was very worried. As it is Entropy who wrote it . He is very well respected. Like he says just because you got away with it does not mean the next guy will.
I've read of phones bricked on hex hacked kernels. Can't see how if the 0 is changed but it does happen. The guy should read Entropy's post.

The whole point about Brickbug is that it has to meet certain criteria to activate, you wouldn't experience a brick off one flash necessarily, it could be the nth time you wiped that you meet those criteria there's just no way to know.
Saying that, I've not read of any bricks from phillz so believe it to be safe.

The case of the guy bricking on Philz was due to transferring videos, nothing to do with wiping or flashing in recovery. Could have happened (and still will) to anyone on any kernel with faulty hardware. Totally unrelated to emmc brickbug.

Whenever I was on ics if used a safe kernel, now on jb leak in still use a safe kernel, i don't trust samsung.

same here... the leak on sammobile, can even think of flashing without changing the kernel to Philz XXLS2.. get lot of surprises from Samsung
Today I tried to update my phone to a new custom rom.
I followed the instructions of the threads and tried to get it to work.
Of course it didn't work or else I wouldn't be here right now asking for help.
Here's the current situation.
I am able to boot into download mode + recovery mode and also boot into cwmr and install a different kernel.
I used pc odin to install it each time and it does pass and the rom (i've tried installing a gingerbread rom so that I can try everything again) does install.
the problem is that it is currently stuck in a boot loop at the "Samsung galaxy note gt-N7000" screen.
I have looked up dr.ketan's posts and tried some too.
currently i am booting abyss note kernel 42cwt touch original. (I know for sure it is a workable kernel because I've been using it this whole time.
here's what i've done. please tell me what i've done wrong and the possible ways to reverse it.
1. backed up everything
2. went into recovery
3. factory reset/cache clear
4. use pc odin to install new kernel (since I was looking into switching to another kernel anyways)
5. use pc odin again to install gingerbread rom (I do get the green light saying it did get installed
6. phone auto reboots
7. it gets stuck at the boot loop like i have mentioned above
i will try to attach a few pictures of my note as soon as I can so you can see what's going on with it.
What rom is there on the phone now ? if you boot into recovery .. what recovery do you get now ? CWM or stock ardroid 3e recovery ?

Right now it reboots to 3e recovery.
The rom that I tried to inject to it is currently a the stock gingerbread rom from dr. Ketans thread.
The rom that I had on it is the official ics rom for the hk region.
The rom that I wanted to inject to it was a custom jb rom that uses hydracore as a kernel.
Thanks!!
try installing a prerooted Gb rom or an ICS stock rom using PC odin.. if you choose ICS, after flash install a safe kernel..

If I do a stock ics update can I just do it through kies or do I have to do it through pc odin? Also. Would abyss or hydracore considered as a safe kernel???
yes if kies can do it then good but at this situation i dont think. its better to use PC odin for now. yes both are safe kernels

I've tried your suggestions...and it didn't seem to work out too well.
I am able to flash to different kernels and get in and out of different recovers and such, but ya...still no luck with running a rom.
Well I am not sure but I soft bricked my phone when I tried that Abyss Kernel. In my view Hydracore is safe. Philz is super safe.
Flash ICS which matches your region using Odin. If phone boots flash Philz, If not, then be ready to read a lot of stuff or get phone repaired.

the only thing i have...
Hey guys. my note seems to have cooperated and allowed me to flash a new rom and also a new kernel. Here's the catch though, now it's stuck in the samsung logo and won't boot beyond that. Any suggestions of what to do? I am continually searching on the forums to find a solution.
At least I'm happy to know it's not a brick that can't be fixed.
Thanks nokiamodeIn91 for your help so far. I really appreciate it.
which rom did you flash and which kernel? how?
He spent a lot of time helping you. Be sure to hit thanks button

I currently flashed the abyss note kernel 42 cw touch and I downloaded an old gb rom from sammobile .
Here's what I did.
1. Put my phone into download mode
2. Run as admin on PC Odin
3. Selected the Abyss kernel then flashed it.
4. Boot into the cmw, wiped cache then booted the phone into download mode again.
5. Then I installed the old GB Rom on to my phone and restarted it.
6. Phone starts, loads past the GT-N7000 logo and goes into the samsung boot logo.
7. Phone repeats the animation of the samsung logo a time or two then restarts on its own. This loops until the phone is completely drained. I know that the rom works because that was the rom that I used to root my phone. I definitely don't mind downloading another rom if I have to.
my current goal, if we can fix this, is to quickly just update to the official jb rom for n7000 and not play around with the rooting and such until I have even more time to learn more.
at least I know for sure my phone isn't hardbricked, I would imagine I have either missed a step or something that caused the problem.
I have read through the forum and I did come across one post talking about checking my phone's partition and such.
I got to be honest, I'm really not technically skilled enough at this point in time to dare to mess around with that type of thing yet especially with so much coding to make sense of it. (I know this is kind of dumb to say especially when I rooted my phone and screwed up this bad). More importantly, I don't even know for sure if I need to do a partition or not.
Please let me know what I did wrong and how I can fix it.
I got a question though (out of curiosity), how come there's no toolkit for the n7000 like the S3 and also the note 2???
this is the name of the old gb rom that I tried flashing.
N7000ZSKJ6_N7000OZSKJ6_N7000XXKJ6_HOME.tar
I actually have tried several other roms as well (from GB-JB, official and custom) and all of them so far has gotten to the samsung boot logo
I have read on the forums to try using Philz-cwm 6 kernel but I don't know if it'd solve my problem.
let me show you one of the threads I have read, if I dived into the wrong material let me know and I won't consider using it (or learn how to use it) for my current situation
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661590&highlight=samsung+logo+bootloop&page=2
like I was saying before, I really have no experience in coding so all the things that really made near no sense to me. I understand the basic concept of what its trying to do it's just seems like a very unsafe method for me to try especially when I lack the necessary knowledge in this area of expertise.
did you flash the GB rom using the standard PIT file ?
also you could try with the 5 file flashing method from this thread
