How come the downloaded OTA JB file has ..tar.tar extension? Should it be renamed to ..tar.md5?

Well, I clicked on your link for the OTA download, downloaded 1.47GB file, it has a name "OTA-Jellybean-4.1.2_system-boot.tar.tar".
"I might be crazy, but I am not stupid"(c)
I am on Win8, IE10 machine if that matters.

See attached image. Odd that yours is .tar.tar..? What browser are you using?
Win8/IE10.
BTW, same thing happened with TWRP recovery which was supposed to be ...tar.md5. I ended up flashing it from adb rather than Odin.
OK, I have changed the extension to tar.md5 from tar.tar.
Flashing as we speak. We'll find out soon what happens.
Very odd... I've Win 8 pro on my other laptop that i use to test all my odin images downloaded with Chrome and they all come in with tar.md5. It may be a ie10 thing, thinking the extensions should be different.
Nice thing is, since it's just the boot and system, if it fails (which it shouldn't since it does it's own md5 check) you can just revert to your backup.

No go.
The tab reboots itself after the boot animation.
Did wipe cache, Dalvik, then did factory reset, reflashed. Same thing.
Going to restore TWRP backup. Oh well.

Will do.
Opera gives the same ..tar.tar extension, so I am going w/Chrome. Chrome gives the correct .tar.md5 extension.

That is honestly, the strangest thing I've ever heard. Theory: Opera and IE both thing the MD5 is a mistake and they rename it .tar.tar. Since it IS a .tar with a .md5 extension, it makes sense.

I think you are right. Both IE and Opera outsmart themselves, they are used to the MD5 files being just a few kbs, and not having double extension, so they "correct" this.
Again, no go.
I did:
- Titanium backup;
- TWRP backup;
- Wipe cache, Dalvik, factory reset;
- Powered off, rebooted into the download mode;
- Flashed w/Odin successfully.,
- rebooted.
The tab keeps rebooting after the start animation.

Did you flash the modem? It shouldn't make a difference.. but who knows.
Also, after flashing with odin, try wiping cache and dalvik again.

Yes, I flashed both Modem and the second zip file.
Gimme a few..
No, the same. Wiped cache and Dalvik immediately after the /successful/ flash from Odin.
Keeps rebooting.
You guys MUST have something on your development tablets I don't have.
Oh well. Like you said, it is not bricked and I can restore my TWRP backup.
nothing out of the ordinary... well, i'm putting together a recovery flashable update right now that may work better. I'm pushing it now then will flash and test.

Re: [OTA][SCH-I705][2013-03-15] VRBLL2 Jellybean 4.1.2 OTA Rooted
My sch-i705 is also rebooting. Any chance we need a secure boot loader with this version?

Well i have Droid 3 phone! and i have no chance to flash a custom rom!!
I have rooted the phone i have installed safe strap!
I go into the SS menu and put my phone into Safe Mode... All fine till now!
Then i go to install zip etc.. i choose my zip and it seems to be installing! But the install procedure seems to finish very soon... in under a minute its says completed succesfully...
so i clear dalvik cache user data etc and reboot.. but nothing happens... the phone gets stuck with a black screen and nothing happens... i have to disable Safe Mode so that the phone can boot up in its old state! i have donwgraded the phone to the old sbf but nothings seems to work!
I really do not know why... so any advice would be very helpfull!!!
you are probably using rick#2's modded safestrap 1.08f
use 1.08e or hashcodes 1.08
I don't know if it will fix your issues, but you're supposed to do all the wiping before you flash, not afterwards. You could have wiped system as well when you did those wipes, so it would have completely undone the whole flashing process.

emm NO... actually i^m usng hashcodes 1.08 - official... but i also tried the modded one. but the same results occured!!!
i forgot to mention.. in recovery when i try doing a cwr recovery some kind of error shows up saying that this opperation cant be completed... i dont know if this has s.th. to do with the other issue! and also tried first deleting user data and stuff and than flashing... but no result at all!!!
After you enable “Safe System”, you must then go to the “Mount” menu and choose “Format System". Then Wipe Data & Cache, Install Your Custom Rom, Wipe Data & Cache, and reboot.
If the SKIP the step of going to "Mount" and "Format System", you will get stuck on a black screen upon reboot 100% of the time!
Hope this helps!

these are the steps i follow:
1. Make sure the ROM .zip file is on your SDcard
2. Reboot and access recovery as above.
3. Select Safe System
4. Turn on Safe System (this should take a few minutes as it is copying the userdata to an unused partition)
5. Power off and reboot into recovery (have not verified this is acutally necessary)
6. wipe data (in main menu)
7. wipe cache (in main menu)
8. Select mounts and storage
9. Format /system
10. Back to main menu
11. Select Advanced
12. Wipe Dalvik Cache
13. Main Menu
14. Install zip (your ROM) from SDcard
15. Reboot (should take a good while to boot, up to 5 minutes)

We will be flashing zips here soon, so I created this. Run this before you install your ROM. It will wipe everything, so backup all your stuff. Good to stay out of boot loops
Worked on my phone so let me know how it works on yours!
Matt did point something out at this time it only wipes cache, dalvik cache, and system.
Download
Cache, dalkvik cache, and sytem wipe.

The regular use at own risk, I assume no responsibility for anything that happens to your phone while flashing this zip, and be careful.

That doesn't matter, you now have the latest firmware on your phone, and there's no going back at this time.
Matt is looking into it over here though:

You can get the latest tar file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522810 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258107. This is for those who are getting contact boot loops on the Galaxy S4 logo
For those who are having a constant boot loop or stuck on the Galaxy S4 screen we (omariscal1019 and I) found a solution. After upgrading to MJA I started to try to get root working and ended up changing something that I shouldn't since it started to boot loop and get stuck on the Galaxy S4 logo.
I thought all was lost and put OctOS for now, waiting for the MJA tar to get posted, but omariscal1019 helped me out made a custom backup with Philz's Recovery in the TWRP format. I was able to successfully boot after restoring boot and system and then wiping data/cache (factory data reset). Here are the files omariscal1019 shared with me and we would like to share with the others in the same situation. I'll try to get more details in a bit up

Make sure to flash with Odin after getting your system to boot properly.
NOTE: This is for only those who can flash Phil'z recovery with Odin and successfully boot into that recovery to restore these backups. Use at your own risk and listen to what others say. We have confirmed that the system/boot works, but only by following the directions below. The modem and radio files are yet to be determined if they work...
Download the files and place them in TWRP/BACKUPS/110c8480 (not sure on the last folder name, that is what was in my TWRP backups folder). Inside that one (110c8480) place the 2013-10-31.21.01.21_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA folder. So in the end you should have the following path: TWRP/BACKUPS/110c8480/2013-10-31.21.01.21_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA.
One other reason on wanting to restore this system partition is this backup was taken after it was rooted. So after restoring this backup you will have a working root with no Knox messages Let me know if you have issues or questions
I just wanted to say a big thanks to omariscal1019, reverepats, and KelevrA_8. omariscal1019 for getting my the files to fix my phone, reverepats for letting us use some of his hosted space, and KelevrA_8 for finding the fix for the sound issues. Make sure you send your thanks to them.
Detailed Instructions
TWRP Format System/Boot Restore
Use Odin and flash Phil'z Recovery at http://d-h.st/users/philz_touch/?fld_id=18376#files
I used philz_touch_5.18.2-jfltespr.tar.md5
Download the files listed above (I'm uploading the zip to a hosting site now)
Boot into Recovery (Power + Volume Up)
Select Backup and Restore
Select Custom Backup and Restore
Select TWRP Backup & Restore
Select Restore from TWRP Format
Uncheck all boxes except for boot (boot should only have the x)
Select Start Custom Restore Job
Select which storage place you put the folder (internal is sdcard and external_sd is sdcard1)
Select 110c8480/2013-10-31.21.01.21_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA (if you can't find it in Philz recovery try moving the folder with the date to a differnet folder where your typical recovery backups go)
Select boot.emmc.win
After it restores boot it will take you back to the list of partitions. Deselect boot and select system, and this time select system.ext4.win000
Then after that go to the main menu by hitting back a few times and select Wipe Data/Factory Reset and then reboot the device
Fix Sound Issue after going to MJA
Use Odin and flash the MJA Kernel which is in the sound issue fix above
Reboot and profit
Thank you so much!!!

I'll try to get more details in a bit up
Files:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/227o3k76ps7ozp0/bZMqFQdUjC
*******************************************
UPDATE: Dropbox suspended my web share links for generating too much traffic. I am still in the process of uploading the zip file to an off site location but it won't be up till tomorrow morning.
*******************************************
Download the files and place them in TWRP/BACKUPS/110c8480 (not sure on the last folder name, that is what was in my TWRP backups folder). Inside that one (110c8480) place the 2013-10-31.21.01.21_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA folder. So in the end you should have the following path: TWRP/BACKUPS/110c8480/2013-10-31.21.01.21_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA.
One other reason on wanting to restore this system partition is this backup was taken after it was rooted. So after restoring this backup you will have a working root with no Knox messages Let me know if you have issues or questions and tomorrow morning I will post a new download link from mega.co.nz in case my dropbox link starts failing due to high downloads

Here is a backup of the radio/modem files. I used Phil'z but I didn't do a TWRP backup this time I did a normal custom backup. I also did another one in the twrp format and I am uploading it now as well:
http://www.fileswap.com/dl/1WxPRFZFiP/2013-11-01.12.51.47_JSS15J.L720VPUEMJA.zip.html
Here is the TWRP version: http://www.fileswap.com/dl/Gchsi8LKq6/2013-11-01.MJA.modem-radio-TWRP.zip.html and a better file name for the other: http://www.fileswap.com/dl/bTakvZPpJ/2013-11-01.MJA.modem-radio-CWM.zip.html
This didn't fix me up. I tried anyway just to make sure but I can't get into recovery so that isn't an option for me.
I've updated the links on the first post, and added modem and radio zips
So if i'm understanding correctly this is a work-around for rooting without flipping Knox off?
So before i update to MJA here is what i think i have to do, pls correct me if i'm wrong.
(Im rooted on stock rom/bootloader MF9)
-Unroot and go back to stock
-Flash MJA
-Follow the instructions on this page to get back root
-Enjoy (Hopefully?)
It seems that i would never have to data wipe either so i can preserve most of my setting too!

So I just was trying to backup everything in recovery and it starts up fine and starts saying md5 blah blah, then fails every time. Says failed to mount data, invalid argument. ..I was doing this in preparation for flashing the new rom you ported (v3) already did a titanium backup and saved to my drive, just trying to make life easier just in case.

You need to format your data in twrp or change your syorage location to ext sd not internal
Thanks to Zach ?
is there an md5 for the zip? Think I am already to give it a try but need to make sure it downloaded correctly.

what is the md5, you should put it on first page, would help rule out problems installing.

bad idea will make the boot slower in TWRP and plus its runnning t-mobile lastest update so you should be good!
I hope you are confused. You can write the numbers of the md5 of the zip you uploaded on the first page, not adding one for twrp to check, but so that people can still use a checker before they try to install it and say you messed something up when it was just a bad download

I recommend everyone put the Flashfire AP zip and Rom Zip on your internal storage as the AP file is so large that it may not be read properly do too limitations of some SD Cards. When you select AP file in Firmware there should be 4 partitions that are selected. If not then you have a bad download or need to have AP file on internal storage
You are a big @jrkruse and I love what you build I will install it in a couple of hours I will return thanks

Probably not
I've tried to install twice so far. Both times I make it as far as Aroma installer getting to "Wiping Data" then phone reboots to Splash screen and just sits. Doesn't make it to boot animation. Tried rebooting, then booting to recovery and wiping cache, then tried factory reset, but nothing helped.
Are there any things I should avoid in Aroma options?

Yup, I did everything exactly as listed. Since there was no directions for Aroma, I was wondering if I was picking a wrong option there. I choose full wipe, TMo stock kernel, modded ui, but it always fails at Wipe when it starts to install.

I picked full wipe, TMo stock kernel, modded ui, NoName boot animation. Most of the S8 apps and custom debloat. I tried the dual speaker mod the first 2 times but not the 3rd.
Both files are on my sdcard.

Do you remember what you chose in custom debloat. I just want to run your same config and try. I would check that md5 use and md5 checker program then check it against Android file host generated md5 for file. If its bad there is no need in doing all this

I don't remember exactly. One of the times I just chose the minimal debloat option (70 apps, I think)
Anyway, I'll have to try again tomorrow after work.
