Random Question About Magnets - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I'm planning on designing a case for the new HTC One, I need to incorporate magnets into the back of the case (Just along the right hand side as you face the rear of the device) and I wanted to know if the constant presence of these magnets would effect the device in any way? The magnets only have 0.55Kg pull, what do you guys think?
If its all good I'll unveil my case after completion...
Thanks!

Anyone?

It will interfere with the built in compass making it useless

[Q] Hand Strap or Leash for our Focus

I have been looking around for a product or a DIY project that will allow a hand strap to be attached to our Focus but so far have not been able to come up with anything.
I love the phone's sleek body and I really don't want to put a case on it so a Hand Strap would be ideal.
Anyone care to share your thoughts or ideas on this?
Thanks!
Possibility
Been wanting a hannd strap myself. The only place I can see where I can secure it without much moding would be the external antenna port below the sim card. I was thinking maybe could attach the strap around the port and find a way to place something into the port like a kind of pin to help keep it in place.
That's an idea.
I saw that connector too but thought that since it's not a screwed on connector it might not provide much of a grip for a strap especially when the cover of our phone comes off so easily.
I actually saw one of my customers at AT&T have a strap on hers and it was a strap with a rubber 3.5mm port at the end. And it was dang sturdy too, and perfect positioning at the hradphone jack. I thought that was so freaking awesome. I have no idea where she got it but more than likely a quick Google search will guide you.

I was toying around with that idea but I was not sure how much grip the headphone jack will provide but it's better than not having a strap at all.

i've seen many, the little jack is plastic, most of them come with a stylus for a touch screen pen, it's a good way to hang a hand strap for decoration only, but dont use your hand strap to hold the phone, it's not strong enough.

I agree, the headphone jack's retention spring/clip will not likely provide enough holding power to stop the phone from falling out of my hand if I put a hand strap on it.
I have already dropped the phone a few times and luckily it had not hit a hard surface with sufficient force to cause much damage. A hand strap in my opinion is totally necessary on a phone this wide (I have a medium size hand).
I hope a solution will surface before anything really bad happens to my phone.

the plug are the only choice, if you do have the a plug with hand strap, the sudden loose of your hand, i'm sure it will hold for that purpose, but like me it's a natural habit to start swing your phone if you some sort of cord or strap on the phone.

[MOD] Simple FlyGrip-style case mod for better one-hand grip - now with kickstand

Hi, I came with a neat idea of really simple case mod - not sure if anyone came with a similar idea before. The trick is to add a elastic band to the back of an existing phone case, so you can put your fingers under it for easier device holding. It provides function similar to FlyGrip accessory, but it is cheaper and much thinner.
To do it, you'll need a case that covers the back of the phone, 8-10 inches of soft elastic tape (which you can get in most sewing or craft shops for about $1/yard), scissors and stapler (or needle and thread if you want to make it more accurate) - see attached photos for detailed. step-by-step instructions.
First variant does not require any alterations for your case - if you have elastic tape that is narrow enough (1/2 inch or 10mm) you put it through camera opening at the top and speaker opening at the bottom. Pull the band so it is stretched and connect both ends from the reverse side of your case with few staples (or needle and thread) - see steps 1 through 7 in attached photos.
Second variant requires you to cut two holes in your case, but it allows you to use 3/4 or 1 inch wide tape which looks and feels nicer. I guess you can use a knife to make these cuts, but I've used the Dremel tool on my case. If you make cuts thin enough and slightly narrower than band width, the band would be held in place by friction, so you would not even need to connect both ends.
Please let me know if you find this mod useful.
[12/27]: I've also made a simple kickstand out of used plastic card - I guess might not work for cases with very smooth back, but it works for my case. Kickstand it is thin in disassembled form, so you can carry it in your wallet or between the case and the back of your phone.
Ha, that's pretty neat, I like it, just need to see if I can find any elastic band around ... Thank you
Great idea!
I don't like using a case. I wonder how well this would work if I just cut slits in my back cover.

If you use a really narrow band (1/4" or so), you can run it through camera and speaker holes without the need to cut back cover (sorry I only had a white 1/4" band). If you decide to cut the cover, remember that it has NFC antenna in top 1/3 of it - do not cut there.
Very very clever! I'm going to try this, did you have to test a lot of different straps before you found the best one? which did you use? Where did you buy it?
if anyone is wondering what the flygrip is that OP references, I did a review.
You can see it here, make sure to watch the video to see it in action.
Cool thanks

I've started with 1/4" band that I had at home and then went to sewing supplies shop and got 1/2" and 3/4" bands they sell by length for about $1/yard. So far I've tested 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4" bands and, I find 3/4" to be the most comfortable and it also has some texture that improves the grip - you can see texture here: http://www.beverlys.com/non-roll-elastic-bundle-3-4-x-18-yd-black.html
I did not have a chance to test 1/2" textured band (as they did not had black color in stock) or 1" band but I think they might be good too.
You can also get these online in 1 yard packages, for example on amazon www.amazon.com/Dritz-9306B-Non-Roll-Elastic-4-Inch/dp/B003WV3RE0 but it seem to cost more there.
Think ill be trying this out!
nice
i might try this
What an awesome idea. I prefer to try DIYs like this but my only concern is making sure the staples hold so the strap doesn't fail since I don't have insurance on my phone.

I ended up sewing the straps together. Wifey still laughing at my stichmenship but seems to holding well. She only had a thin strap but I can see why the thicker band would be prefered.
What a creative thread. How did you cut the near slit in the case,

This is my mod on this. I did it directly to the back battery cover instead as I don't like the bulk of a case.
Will try to get more pictures of it attached to the phone when I can get my hand on a separate camera.
A simple variant
Nice idea. A simple variant, needing only a large rubber band and a paper clip. Run the ends of the rubber band through the camera and plug holes in the case, attach inside with a paperclip, and you are done.
Superb innovative idea !!!
nice mod. and brilliant idea for one handed usage
Good work, thanks for all of the ideas
Awesome..
Will try that on my Note 3.

[MOD]Wrist Strap MOD

Sup ladies/guys, today I present to you a wrist strap solution. If you are like me and don't like to put cases/covers on your phone and wish every phone had a wrist strap cling, like older phones used to have, then I have a solution for you. I have done this since I got my N5. I never like to put cases on my phone because I believe a phone is sexy, well certain phones. HTC makes the sexiest phones, in my opinion. See pictures below please.
Instructions: Take a thick needle that you can have a good grib on. A nail might work too. You might want to mark with a marker/pen where you want to place the two holes. With the needle start to wind it back and forth, Sort of like like a motion where, as if you are tightening a screw. Careful you dont pierce your hands, lol. You might have to push a bit while trying to make the holes, this should penetrate the needle. You should make the two holes vertical, unless u want them to be horizontal.
That poor thing...
Why???
Just get the REARTH's Ringke Fusion. It already comes with wrist strap slots.

Charging port won't be touched because you would have remove the cover to put the holes =).
I didn't say anything about the charger port. The wireless inductive charging coil is on the back side of the back cover.
If you poke a hole (or 2 for that matter) in the wrong spot; there goes your wireless charging. Plus...I highly doubt neither Google nor LG will honor a warranty claim if you deliberately punched holes in the back of the phone.

Do magnets in horizontal belt-clip cases interfere with the M8?

I assume that dot-view official cover works by magnets, similar to the smart-cover for iPads?
I was looking at these three:
http://store.androidcommunity.com/rugged-qx-ntx-horizontal-pouch/4A120A16420.htm
http://www.htcdepot.com/ventev-universal-horizontal-pouch/4A120A16476.htm
http://www.pdair.com/index.php/leather-case-for-htc-one-m8-horizontal-pouch-type.html
I noticed that that the magnets on that middle one look pretty strong with how much they dug into the case in the photographs, will this mess with the M8 in any way? Or would the placements of these magnets (or the ones in the other cases) effect it?
Seems that they will, so then by any chance has anyone used any of these cases with the M8? Do they activate the dot view mode while in the case by accident?

My wife users a case like this for work, and the magnet does trigger the dot view mode. She wears scrubs at work, so a holster case is a must for her since scrub pockets are so loose.

I had this issue with a magnet car kit and if you rename the file htc dot matrix . apk then the screen will shut off when you put it next to the magnet but you can power it back on and resume operations. Must have root to Rename file.
I am on my phone but it is in something like:
Private_apps/htcdotmatrix. Apk
Must use root browser to see and Rename it.

I've had great luck with PDAir cases. I used it for my M7, although I'm using a different one for my M8. I'm still in the hunt for a pouch case myself; mine is a bit tight. They ship from china and take a while. Great quality.

Yea this one has a button close.. preferred magnetic it's much better... Had one on Evo 4g Lte. Almost 2 years old and still good didn't were out
Sprint HTC One M8
This is the one I got:
http://www.shopandroid.com/ventev-universal-horizontal-pouch/4A120A16476.htm
It uses magnets, but so far I haven't see it set off the DotView feature. It also fits my M8 perfectly, it's not tight nor loose.
Price is a bit expensive though, but the other places I found it at it was too cheap to be true (and I've heard some complaints about the really cheap ones being knockoffs). Do pay attention to the model number though, there is another one of the same size by the same company but has a clearly different design and s slightly different model number, not sure about the magnets or how well that one fits as I opted for this model.
How does the phone fit on this one? Do u use any cover to make it fit? I don't use covers...
Sprint HTC One M8
nothing to do with a case but...
i have a macbook pro and when i lay my m8 on the pro, near the right hand palm rest area, the phones screen will turn on. sometimes if i move it a certain way or over a certain area i guess it triggers a function for one off these case? will these magnets harm my device?
Magnets make the screen come on.

Your thoughts on magnetic holsters

Im looking for a holster, i found some but most have a magnetic closure. Im not sure if its ok for our phones so i just wantes your thoughts or experience with it. I use samsung pay every day and i dont want any sensor to be off because of the magnets.
Maybe im a little paranoid over it because it probably takes an extremely powerful magnet to cause any harm but im not willing to test it out lol
None of the magnetic items for the phones will cause any harm to your phone.
You may notice that the stylus doesn't work where the magnet is, but it will work just fine when you move the magnet.
As a Samsung Experience Consultant, I do not recommend anything magnetic, I think they mess with the device internals.

You do know many manufacturers use magnets in their devices and accessories, including Samsung and Apple, right? Every Apple smart case / cover utilizes magnets and (as much as I love Android) I can honestly think of no more reliable tablet than the iPad.

You think or you know?
You should only be putting out info if you know. If you don't know, and it is clear you don't, then you should not speak on a subject.
Magnets will in no way harm the phone unless you are using super powerful magnets, what you use to hold the phone to a dock and things like that won't bother it in the least bit.
I do not recommend any of the Samsung Flip Cases to customers because I have seen them cause problems with devices before. I do not recommend magnetic closures because I have seen them cause problems with devices.

What sort of issues have you seen?
It seems strange that Samsung would release a product that would interfere with one of its flagship products and sell it as an accessory.

I'm not sure if this is specifically what you're asking about, but I've been using a Scosche MagicMount (http://amzn.com/B00I608BJ8) for my car dash and love it! I lay the larger metal plate (it comes with two sizes) at the bottom of my case, oriented where the longer sides are parallel to the bottom of the phone (let me know if you need a picture). I don't stick the plate to my phone, but rather set it inside my case. It turns out to be the perfect length and height for the Note 5. Wireless charging and Samsung Pay still work great. I used that picture of the Note 5 where someone made the back of transparent to make sure the wireless charging coil inside the phone does not over lap with the metal plate that comes with the mount.
I bought a nice leatherette case for my Note 5 only to find that the S-Pen does not work on the right hand side where the magnet is. I took it off immediately and went back to my Body Glove case.

I purchased a wallet case on eBay. I noticed there were areas on the screen that wouldn't work. When I flipped the removable phone case there were 6 magnets...three on each side to hold the phone in the wallet. These magnets are small, but the impact was terrible! I I'm attaching pictures of me using the s pen to find the areas on the screen and the back of the phone case.

Like I said. "Magnets will in no way harm the phone"
This isn't harming your phone, it does do as you have seen which is a TEMPORARY issue and has already been discussed, it will cause no permanent harm to the phone.
I don't know about magnetic holsters but magnetic car mounts most definitely YES. I've used many holsters over the years, for all kinds of types of phones. I haven't really thought about it till I saw this post. My buddy has a good magnetic car mount for his s7 edge, but I don't really know anyone at the moment that's using a magnetic holster. Just my opinion though, the last time I used a holster was way back in January and it was actually pretty good. It was a best buy branded platinum, with kickstand holdster and case like a 3 in kind of deal but not magnetic. It fit could on my belt clips for my jeans and suit pants. Good luck
bought the Bracketron brand at best buy, the magnetic part is on the mount, it is a metal plate stick to your phone so no interference from the magnet, not owning a note 5 tho.
I put in some small tin paper cutouts INSIDE my note 5. I took the back cover off, peeled the sticker with the color/logo and spraypainted it a nice black then just glued the tin paper inside of that. Then I took a flat wireless charger and added neodymium magnets to it, modded it to be as small/thin as possible then covered it up with some black thin leather I bought from Michaels. I mounted it up to my car's console and now I just plop the phone onto it and it sticks tight and fast charges, no wires or case. Worked perfectly, but in hot weather the leather would become a bit slippery so it would slip off, but I fixed that with a couple of very small circular double sided gel tape on the bottom just to provide a bit of friction. I've ridden like this for the past 5 or 6 months and it doesn't slip or fall off at all, heavy bumps, hot weather, nothing dislodges it.
The only thing that doesn't work is the spen, and that's only directly over the magnets, but I wouldn't write on it anyway while it was mounted. Otherwise I've had zero difficulties with it. I'll post up pics if anyone is interested, but it's a bit frankenstein looking.
