Has anyone who needed to replace their phone with a refurb recieved one with a SLCD? I am wondering because of the whole amoled shortage and all. (I prefer SLCD over AMOLED)
Haven't heard of any on the boards here... Oh, congratz on your Nexus For some reason I thought u had a HD2

LOL, I did, just sold it XD. I will report when i get my refurb soon, just need enough money so they can see that I am good to send to. I really dislike the unaligned "pixels" on AMOLED screens. SuperAMOLED or SuperLCD FTW.
I just swapped mine out with HTC and the replacement has an amoled screen. Did they even start selling the super lcd's?

i'm with you on that one. i also have an AMOLED Nexus One and i HATE the pentile arrangement. It's a joke that the inventors claim that the differences are not visible from certain distance, because i can see them very clearly at normal distance.
I'm just waiting for the Dev Phone to be sold with SLCD and then i'm going to buy one and sell my AMOLED version.
i just got my phone back from htc and it looks like i got a brand new one so how can i tell if i got AMO or SLCD?
thanks
Just look at it to tell the difference. Does it have the pentile display? (oled) Or does the black look washed out? (lcd)
i dunno im so used to my g1 cuz i took forever to send it in, it just looks so good i cant tell, i'll wait until my buddy stops by with his so i can compare
i just got a new phone from htc (my old one i turned in for warranty repairs) and it came with an amoled screen. i was kinda worried about getting the slcd since i did the swap right around the time of the announcement.
I wish they would do that. I don't mind blacks being a tiny bit greyer, so long as everything is symmetrical and easy to look at. It took me like 3 days just to tolerate text or anything on the screen.

yep, compared to some old WVGA LCD screens like on the Touch Diamond 2 (hell, even the td1 display was great) or the Motorola Milestone, the Nexus One AMOLED PenTile display looks like utter garbage when showing text.
Reading this fuzzy text for a longer period of time is really bad for the eyes. Nexus One was a superphone in many areas when it was released, but the display was a major step backwards.
I don't know what's the fuzz about SLCD. There are comparison videos online you can look up. SLCD obviously is worse that AMOLED. The brightness, color vibrancy, and visible angle are all worse than AMOLED.

X2!!! indeed!!!
Replacement phones are refurbished n1's, and since SLCD on nexus was announced after the consumer version was discontinued and there have been no reports of the dev phone having SLCD, I would say that it is safe to assume there is not going to be any SLCD anytime soon.

Didn't someone mention that the fuzzy text can be corrected by the driver of the display? Currently the text ant-aliasing is suitable for traditional RGB subpixel layout, but it is possible to correct this on a pentile subpixel display. I wonder how probable this is. Some people said that text look sharp on the Galaxy S. Maybe Samsung has corrected this issue with software?

Hmmm, I would rather Have the darkness of AMOLED, and the pixel alignment of an LCD.
Hmmm Monday I will be able to order the refurb, paypal is stupid and makes money transfers to and from the bank 3-5 days long. So I cant have the money on hold yet to do it.
I would also like to know! AMOLED and SLCD which is better?
I am getting my refurb soon hopefully. I will post what I get.
Samsung has recently brought in the White Note to the Indian Market.Does it beats the style and looks of the Black?
Depends on personal preference I guess. I personally liked the white one because it's more stylish and fingerprints are less visible. And if you want to stand out from the crowd then get the white. If you want to be discrete, get the black.

LOL I think having this beast in one's hands makes one "stand out from the crowd" Plus White is too Appleish.
WHITE!!! most of the devices around us are black..go for white..stunin 5.3 beast in white is awesome
Also love my white note, its a beauty beast
After looking at some pics of a white Note recently I liked it so much it made me have some buyers remorse. I hadn't bothered even looking at one before getting the black, thinking naaaah that won't look good but when I saw it I was like damn!!! that is sweet!!! it just looks better in white. Of course color preference is completely subjective so that's just MHO. If I could get my hands on a white one with 32Gb internal to further justify the expense, I'd buy it in a second, long as she was new in the box.
dude definitely go for the white one ...alothough i have a blue (black) one
coz when i got in dec ,the white one was apprx 35k and mine was 30k so 5k just for colour was not worth it

Agreed but I just couldn't justify the 400$ hickup on the white one. Still happy with my black one though don't want people staring when I'm using an already eye catching phone.

LOL, you have a point. Although I kind of disagree with the white Note being Appleish. I had a white HTC trinity a year before iPhones came out so as far as I'm concerned, iPhones are HTCeish.
i've seen a video of it in white and it looks so sexy. I wish I had another month's patience to get white note. but yea as someone else said it all depends on preference
It's actually blue (very dark blue) not black, and white, but that's not a serious matter.
As for me, I always take the black variant when I buy devices with screens. The black bordering the screen makes the video experience 'cleaner' or 'brighter' or something --- can't think of the proper word for it. Something of a more genuine cinematic feel; the same feel demonstrated in a movie house with the lights off.
Of course, that could just be psychological and/or aesthetic but it does go easier on the eyes at any point. I'd try to cite sources but I'm too lazy atm. Of course, when you use the Note in the dark, there would be likely no difference. However, this preference for me in such devices only applies to the screen area. I once had my hands on a Nintendo DS Lite whose interior is black but the outer cover is red but it pleases me all the same. Same thing with the Note whose back is just some very dark blue.
Another thing though, the device looks super cool when the screen is off. Like the front is just a black, shiny slab that comes to life in a push of a button. :3
You gotta admit though, white is very eye-catching. Overkill on the eye-catching factor sometimes too.
My personal opinion - white is more for the female type of users I think. I've hold a galaxy s2 white and although it is very sexy, most people in my surroundings find it more suited for women.
Now, the White Note is very stylish in its white housing there's no doubt about it.....but if you check the streets, you'll notice that most women hold white phones and it looks this color is destined for the lady's market rather than male. The White housing gives the phone a sexy soft appealing look to the overall design. To choose between a black or white, I'll opt for the black at 101%. Just my personal thoughts about this.

I tend to agree. I prefer Black devices or dark brown to any light colored. the whole finger print thing is moot to me as anyone who is concerned about finger prints probably has 50 cases.....LOL I don't use em Like my devices stock and easily pocket fitting.

was about to opinion the same. As per color theory black is more suited for better video experience. Haven't come across a theater with white surrounding near the screen.
Black is best. White could be more dirty with the time.
So I can speak from myself saying that black is very good

My white note has the exynos, I think you will find that the difference in chips is between the european or international ones and the version for the US carriers which are probable going for the snapdragon because of compatability with US LTE

Coming from a One X i must say that ever since I had the One x i simply despise amoled screens. The Black might be good but i'll take better whites over blacks any day. Apart from that the screen also felt so much brighter than the amoled screen.
The first thing I did when i heard of the nexus 4 and its price was to look whether the screen is Amoled or not. If it were an amoled screen i would have most probably thought twice before buying this device. Amoled IMO is just not there yet. I recall comparing the galaxy nexus's screen with my one x... That dim bluish white on websites was simply horrible.

Watch the first few seconds of this video (Nexus 4 boot up) and you will see that although blacks on the current top of the line LCD displays may not be the same as blacks on AMOLED screens, they're still VERY good.
Well, watched video. Amoled rules. Colors reproduction is way better. LCD way to go for improvement.

I have a question...okay the black is better on the galaxy nexus....but when you use your phone, the screen is always black ? because, the white is better on the nexus 4 and the contrast is a lot better. So i don't understand all of this thing about the black on the galaxy nexus....( i used a lot the galaxy s 2 )
This isn't English
How about you ****ing note that in the title, or at least somewhere in the post?
Like I've said before, what's the point of having on screen buttons when the background of the buttons are pure black? And until unless the phone doesn't produce deep blacks, what's the point? The Galaxy Nexus feel more like a Nexus MAINLY because of the AMOLED display.
Don't know why people keep complaining about the PenTile, it's not bad. It really isn't. The Galaxy Nexus, I agree, had some yellow-ing issues but most of the devices DID NOT. I had those issues - My screen broke - I got a new screen and it's FANTASTIC.
Just yesterday, I compared my Galaxy Nexus's screen with the HTC One X, the iPhone 5 and the HTC Sensation (All 3 having LCD displays) and trust me, none of the phones stand a chance in front of the color production of the Galaxy Nexus.
The main reason I didn't buy the Nexus 4 and I never will is the AMOLED. Nexus devices have had AMOLED since their first release. From the HTC One X to the Galaxy Nexus, the devices have been AMOLED and they looked amazing!
Sure the Nexus 4 has a great crisp screen but it surely doesn't beat the Galaxy Nexus in terms of color production and the black levels.
But well, every one has their own opinions. Don't jump on me!

No thanks, Jeff. Pentile is an absolute disaster. Forget color reproduction. It has nearly 30% less sub pixels than the Nexus 4. I still remember telling people that the screen is 720P. My iPhone carrying friends literally laughed, because the difference in sharpness between the two screens was a complete and utter joke. Blacks are only noticeably different in a dark environment (try to see the difference in daylight; you can't), and considering most of us use our phones mostly in well lit areas, I'd take LCD > OLED. Lastly, do I even need to mention how pathetic whites were on Samsung crap? What about the severe burn in? Yeah. No thanks. AMOLED, never again...

Contrast:
Amoled>>>LCD
Contrast is the brighness of the whites divided by the brighness of the blacks, since the blacks on Amoleds have almost zero brightness their contrast is extremely high.
How contast is not everything, my main use of the phone is browsing and messaging so I will take accurate whites over perfect blacks anytime.
I also got sick of the oversaturated colors an even worse the unavoidable screen burn that is even worse on phones with onscreen buttons.
so i think the nexus 4 is definitely a degrade from Gnexus.... every one saying that ips lcd has a far better brightness than amoleds but its clearly showing in video that TRUE IPS PLUS LCD is totally crap when comparing to HDAmoled ..color reproduction, contrast levels, blacks as well aswhites(look in when comparing chrome browsers) , saturation everything excellent on AMoled.... i thought nexus 4 has a super duper display....but its a big dealbreaker for me...i sold my s3 for a nexus4 ...

Actually you tend to find colour reproduction on AMOLED is worse. Sure it's more vibrant looking (often referred to as over-saturated), but that doesn't make it accurate.

I can tell you the screen is not bad in my opinion, not to say the g2 is not good however in my opinion the slightly smaller screen and higher ppi does make just that little bit sharper and the colours seem great to me.
Probably not calibrated like the last since that is manufacture optimization. Probably going to need Franco to make it look good.

The Note 3 is probably optimizing itself for those specific benchmarks, I wouldn't trust those results.
Probably the calibration. We will try our best to get the best calibrated profile for the N5 (PA Team).
From the numerous videos etc I've seen it seems like the temperature/whites are ok, just the colours are a bit washed.
Hoping franco releases an n5 compatible version of his display control app so the rob values can be adjusted/improved.
Not sure if I have the balls yet for custom kernels etc.
You can mess with the colors and set them to your liking.
I've been comparing mine to my iphone 5's screen, honestly I can't see any difference. Although if someone could explain calibration test images to me I could do a quick comparison there as well.
From the feedback. It seems the g2 has clearer and a more vibrant screen than the n5. We ll see once reviews start rolling out.
Umm, how do you tell the screen is "really bad" from that video? It does seem more reflective which is a shame because it will look more washed out outside but aside from that, I don't see any evidence of "messed up calibration" there.
All I can compare it to is the HTC One and the N5 screen is nowhere compared to that, not even on the same planet. Colours are flat, blacks are grey, viewing angles are poor... relatively..

I doubt it can be fixed. You can calibrate any screen, or at least try to, but if it fundamentally isnt that great, it will always remain so. There is little you can do about viewing angles.

Poor blacks can't be fixed.
Has anyone compared it directly to the N4 screen? Both indoors and outdoors/in direct sunlight. I suspect the N5 screen is even more reflective and washes out more.

Whites look white to me. Get a color card from a photographer friend and compare under full-spectrum lighting. Maybe I'm wrong.

Dude, no, just no.
I have a galaxy S2 which I believed to have bright and vibrant whites. I was at church with my buddy and we were comparing the white of the S2 and G3 with a church bulletin (Completely white plain paper color) and my S2 was horribly blue. His white was yellow by comparison to my phone, but 100% accurate to the real white of plain paper.
Phones jack up the cool blues to give the impression of a better "white" but that doesn't make it true and accurate to real life.
