Hello guys, im sure similar questions have been asked before but I realy want to be on the safe side with this so im asking here anyway.
Currently I have an unrooted n7000 running android 4.0.4 ICS. I am getting tired of samsungs touchwiz interface and I want the smoothness of jellybean, therefore I want to root my phone and flash a new ROM. I have found this rom which looks like it has some nice features. But the problem im having is that I have no experience with Rooting for the past 2 days I have looked around for info on how to root my phone. I know that I need to flash a "safe kernel" before flashing a new rom. However, I havn't found that much info on flashing a new kernel. What seems to be the most "advertised" method is philz kernel.
On the philz kernel thread I have found some instructions, however I don't know which download, if I have understood it correctly, I should download the version with the same letters as my kernel version. My current kernelversion is 3.0.15 - N7000XXLRI - CL811902 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMT Wed Jul 11 20:04:41 kst 2012.
So I went looking for a XXLRI download and found some which had the XXLRI in them. The problem is that all of them are 2.7 or lower as well as a "Update to all ICS 4.0.4 kernels from 3.71 ---> 3.99:". This leads me to believe that I need to have 3.71 installed before applying this kernel. And from what I have read, I will need at least 3.99 to use CarbonRom. But the only other versions are <2.7. Have I missunderstood something or is there simply no version of PhilZ kernel for my phone.
If im not misstaken, after I have installed PhilZ kernel, I should be able to flash CarbonRom without problems. Is that true?
Also, just for saftey, I would like some form of backup of my current ROM, I know you are able to acieve that with CWM and my suspiccion is that PhilZ will be able to do that (based on my limited understanding of this, PhilZ contains a version of CWM). Also, im guessing that installing philz won't wipe the data on my phone.
I am greatefull for all your awnsers.
ICS.. most of the ics kernel will work with your rom.. use any kernel thats updated to 3.99 like XXLRT or DDLRB.. download the zip version and place it on ext SD card.. boot into recovery and choose apply update from external storage and flash the kernel.. you will be rooted with safe kernel and cwm.. now you can install the carbon rom .. follow full wipe procedure.

Thanks for the awnser, just one more question, do most roms past 3.99 work so I can use a later version, or should I just use 3.99 ones?
most of the Kernels updated over 3.99 are JB kernels so no.. install a ICS kernel

Ok, hopefully I got this now. In the list of the list beneath "Update to all ICS 4.0.4 kernels from 3.71 ---> 3.99:" I found this kernel "PhilZ-cwm6-XXLRW-SFR-v3.99" Judging from what I can tell, the download for the 3.99 kernels are just updates so I will need to download a version before it. So, I found this file: XXLRW-SFR
mediafire.com/file/sunp1b....71-signed.zip
mediafire.com/file/3gwdl8...R-3.71.tar.md5
It has the same XXLRW-SFR and im guessing it's the 3.71 file. Above it it says < Update to PhilZ Touch 3.39 based recovery>. Which im guessing is telling me that I should update this one to 3.99 with the previously mentioned file. have I finaly got this right?
you can even use the 3.71
Awesome, I have now installed the kernel successfully. Im currently backuping using the "Backup" feature in PhilZ.
I guess I should move on to the ROM now, Like I said, I want to install this. Will I be able to install it right now without doing anything else. (I have only installed PhilZ 3.71) Also, will I be able to use the backup I made to restore back to my original ROM in case I want to?
I hope you don't mind me asking this many questions. I just don't want to mess this upp.
Edit: I found this in the CarbonRom thread Only Philz kernel 3.99 supports rom installation or else you will get Status error.
I will just go ahead and install 3.99. But is there anything else I should know before I install the new ROM?
thats i think for JB kernels.. but you can always update. Yes you can restore the backup you made
Well, CarbonRom is a JB rom if im not completley misstaken. What would happen if I try to install the rom on a kernel that dosn't support it? For example installing it when I have philZ 3.99 and that dons't work? Will it just give an error?
That's does not matter as when you install the rom it will replace the kernel with the one it has. You can use any kernel to install but later you need to use a compatible kernel to run the rom.

Well my problem is that I flashed my Gnote with ICS and now seems to be a problem with the kernels ( i read it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26272631 )
So as that thread says, now i have to change the kernel by flashing with odin/heimdall, but i wanted to ask you guys if any kernel will work with my rom or not... and if you can give me a link with a safe one (i didn't find any link to say that is safe, although i have to confess that i haven't searched too much neither ) I have this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589375 but v01 and i'll upload a screencapture with the system info because i think that would be useful.
Thank to evereybody and lets hope that the problem is going to be fixed soon

Flash this kernel to be on a safe kernel flash via Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...4&d=1337346991
Read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1627854
the first link doesnt work, and about the second, what you want me to say is that is ok to flash the kernel they recommend there via odin and no need to change my rom right?
really thank you i was pretty worried about this problem...
WAIT
I think you should go back to stock GB and then use one of the safe kernels to install an ICS rom, like CM9.
I'm really a bit confused but this is from what I understand.
I still don't know what to do... does the kernel have to be combatible with the rom or it doesn't matter which ROM i'm on? for now i want to keep this ROM because works really good or to get the original ICS... so guys what do you say? Is it ok if i flash the kernel that brockyneo told me?
I would reccomend flashing the latest cm9 nightly as the rom your using is a old unoffical version of it. In order to do this flash the kernal i have attached via mobile odin (your phone will NOT boot using this kernal so make sure you go into recovery). Then flash the abyss note kernal via cwm, after which go into advanced and reboot recovery. Then in this recovery you can flash the CM9
Hope that helps
I recently upgraded my Note to official ICS (OTA) and I'm not liking it AT ALL! Now I really want to get far away from this update as possible and I'd like to switch to a CM9 nightly Rom. I've that now that I have upgraded to the official ICS Rom, I run the risk of super bricking my device. So now I ask you to help me make sure the following is correct so that I may move on from this wretched update:
DO NOT perform wipes if you are on original Samsung ICS
DO NOT perform wipes if you are on a original Samsung kernel??
Flash back to original Gingerbread Rom using odin BEFORE flashing to CM9
Flash to different kernel??
I've flashed millions of Roms but this one is scary and I just want to make sure haven't missed anything... Have I?
Thanks for you help!!
John J
Just flash a stock directly rootable GB rom, root and put CM9 on it. Then do a factory reset and you're good to go. Went that way few times already.

So is the super-brick BUG on the official ICS OTA?? OMG
And yeah go back to gingerbrear via odin, get root then flash any CM9 tru CWM no problems...
I'd like to do something similar to what the OP wants to do however I have rooted and installed CWM on an official/stock ICS rom. So if I wanted to flash back to a stock gingerbread rom would I need to remove CWM and/or un-root?

There is no need to unroot first. You can flash stock GB rom directly via Odin.
I've now flashed to GB but before I move on to a CM9 nightly, do you recommend I flash the CM9 kernel as well? Seems like it is not a prerequisite but I would like to make sure. Thanks.
John J
afaik, when flashing a CM9 Nightly, the eligible kernel is built in, so no need to flash anything but the ROM.
i'm on one of imilkas first CM9 port and it says [email protected] #1 under Kernel version in settings.
Yes. The correct kernel is included in the nightly.
Hi, I have an international varient of the Galaxy Note GT N7000 which using Chainfire's Got Brick App v1.1 says:
eMMC Chip
Type: VYL00M
Revision: 0x19
Verdict: Danger! This eMMC chip is "Known" to have the brick bug!
I once had installed a custom Kingdroid ROM v3 and wiped it but it had resulted in a Hardbrick/Superbrick so i had to take it Samsung Service Center to get it fixed. They have repaired it and given me back the handset with the Stock ICS ROM. Here are the details:
Model Number: GT-N7000
Android Version: 4.0.3
Baseband Version: N7000XXLPT
Kernel Version: 3.0.15-N7000JPLPD-CL643396
[email protected]#3
SMP PREEMPT Thu May 31...
Build Number: IM74K.JPLPD
Now i have done some researched and found that this bug is only triggered with kernels (ICS stock & leaked) which have the eMMC_Erase function/command. GB kernels are not known to have this erase function so they are safe.. Also the two safe kernels are franco r3 and speedmod k3 (Correct me if im wrong). Can anyone please guide me on the following:
1) Should I flash Stock Gingerbread OR ICS Kernel(franco/speedmod)?
2) Should I use Recover or ODIN?
3) Plz Provide the links for the Kernels - Franco R3 & Speedmod K3 which are safe?
4) Will the above Kernels provide root access?
5) Is abyss kernel safe (because it supports GPU overclock)?
6) Can i flash an ICS kernel over a Gingerbread ROM?
For answering please answer in a similar numbered way so that it is easy to read and understand for me as well as future audience! Thanking everyone who takes time to read and answer!
I use Speedmod kernel and i confirm that it is safe (for me at least anyway) Im using CleaNote ICS ROM, So I would suggest you also use speedmod kernel,
You Flash it in Odin, It will give you CWM and Root too !
Ive attached the kernel to the post for you.
Abyss kernel is safe, But its for GB ROMs only, You are on ICS so it wont work.
I dont know if you can flash ICS kernel over GB ROM, However, Your are on ICS so you shouldnt need to worry about that.
don't really want to hijack your thread an i dont really want to make a whole new thread for a simple question.
as a noob, im just wanting to know, if i update my stock gb to stock ics via software update, are there still chances of this emmc bug/brick thats going on?
and the battery drain issues, do they only exist in custom roms or does it exist in stock roms too?
cheers.

Thanks for the confirmation mate, one more thing to ask you: Is the speedmod kernel faster than the stock ICS kernel? Is there any flaws such as battery drain/WIFI problem with it? Also does it support GPU OC? Thanks once again for your help!

Firstly get your Galaxy Note checked using Chainfires App (Gotbrick v1.1). If the verdict says "Danger" only then does your device have this problem. My Galaxy Note (Rev 0x19) had this problem and came with GB out of the box and i upgraded it to ICS through Samsung Kies and it worked fine. So i do not think that while updating to ICS via Kies will cause this problem. As of what i know it is triggered when a command eMMC errase is triggered when either doing a factory reset or wipe through recovery. The update as such did not brick my device, however this does not mean it cannot brick yours. I am no expert on this so be a little cautious while updating. I would suggest stick to GB until Samsung Releases a safe stock ICS ROM with a safe Kernel. Cheers!
really easy
1: (optional ) in GB do factory reset (after you have made a backup with TB)
2: put phone in Download mode.
3: use PC odin flash STOCK ICS rom
4: reboot device let it load
5: put device back into download mode
6: use PC ODIN flash Speedmod k3-3
7: reboot
8: launch CWM and tell it to reboot in cwm recovery
9: load your custom rom of your choice
i HIGHLY recommend doing ONLY THE FACTORY RESET WIPE data and cache in GB before you start anything.
ONCE you are in ICS and have successfully loaded speedmod or franco's kernel then it is safe to do a factory wipe if you want. but ONLY after one of those 2 Kernels are on your device.
EMMC BUG. is affected in all N7000 Devices only . only the devices sent to the USA have the revision the non 0x19 bug .

Yes, this bug is known to trigger usually when you do a wipe using the recovery. However there have been some cases when doing a factory reset via the settings has also resulted in a brick. However if you stay away from recovery and do not intend to doing flashing/wipes then i guess you should be ok. And it is a matter of time before Samsung Comes up with a solution. They are said to be working on this bug already. I have the N7000 which i bricked once while flashing and then wiping but i got it repaired since i had warranty. Since then i have stayed away from wiping or installing any custom roms so the device has not given any problems. Hope this info helps! Cheers!
Rom doesnt load during boot
Dear Developers
I rooted my galaxy note and soon as that i got gained super user access for chain fire app, then i flashed CWM and installed crisello rom with abbysys kernel , it installed all the files correctly and soon after that the phone rebooted .After reboot the phone went inside the boot menu ( the world of galaxy UI boot menu ) and it frozen since then
i tired flashing various custom or stock roms and still the same problem i face
If someone could help me out on what the problem is and how i could get a fix to it

I have three questions if You can help me
1- Are speedmode and franco Kernels the only safe kernels for stock ICS?
2- Can I flash CM9 from stock ICS or it is safer to do it from GB rom?
3- Can I flash CM9 kernel for stock rom?

1. Afaik yes
2. NO, you'll brick, flash from GB kernel, I know some have done from abyss.
3. No. CM based not compatible with Touchwiz framework.

I have a quick ( hopefully) question about the brick bug. I already asked but I think a mod must have deleted the whole thread, even though the thread was about the brick bug and I think I might have been bringing a new way ( well for some anyway) to flash safely to new ROMs.
So anyway, I have a 'safe' kernel ( speedmod), and I want to try out 4.0.4 stock ROM. I have extracted the stock ROM zip and the tar file inside. In there is the Zimage.
Do I just delete the Zimage then re-zip and flash from CWM?
OR Do I have to replace the Zimage with another, 'safe', Zimage ( for example just put the zimage in there from speedmod because I want to keep that for now). Does there NEED to be A Zimage there, or will it work fine without one. I don't want to start flashing the ROM and it get stuck half way through.
If it will work this way then this might be a fairly easy way for anybody to flash any new ROM they want. They'll just need to get a safe kernel on there in the first place.

Gave that a go last night and I must not be doing something right. Either I need to re-zip it differently or I need to use something other than CWM (mobile odin?) because it's just aborting before it actually starts flashing anything.
Suppose I could always flash the separate elements on pc odin?

Try mobile odin. If you point to the tar, it should load all the components. You can then review which components are being flashed.

Stock rom in a zip? Are you sure you are nit flashing a custom rom? Point us to the file/thread please.
If it is a custom rom, the it is meant to be via CWM.
1. Flash abyss42
2. Reboot recovery
3. Do your wipes
4. Flash.
Im sure there is a specific instruction on where you got that file. Or better yet, go to dr. Ketans thread and get your stock rom from there.

It's just the standard rom file from sammobile. It does come as a zip you know. If you unzip it, then use rar on it you can see all the bits. I thought if I just put a different zimage in there it would just go ahead and use that, but didn't seem to like it after I zipped it all back up again.
Tonight I've ended up getting chainfires excellent CF-Root kernel.Flashed that through odin, over my speedmod kernel.
Put just the factoryfs part of the stock rom zip onto the SD card and flashed that using the cwm app that CF-Root installs for you.. Now have CF-Root kernel and 4.0.4 firmware.
If you don't already have a "safe" kernel then I dunno what the brick chances would be, but since I had a safe one already I thought it couldn't hurt to try it out.
The reason I haven't flashed the hidden, cache, model and sbl parts of the zip is that simply they wouldn't fit on my SD card If it behaves funny or I can make space then I'll try the rest too. And the reason I didn't flash the zimage from the zip should be fairly obvious. Because I don't want a brick
EDIT: I managed to clear some space on the SD and flashed the rest of it. Seems to be working ok, so far anyway. I'm hoping the battery issues from 4.0.3 will be a little better. This is a really good way of doing it all as you can just swap out a potentially bad kernel for one that has been 'protected' by having te emmc cap erase turned off.
Hello dear XDA peeps
I need some help here or maybe I dont, thats why Im asking!
I rooted and followed all the guides a couple of months back, must be over half a year, and installed ICS Stunner 1.4.19. At that time that was simply the most interesting for my Note. These days when more stable ICS roms seem much more appealing. Altho Im thinking Im waiting for a stable working beta for JB
Since I havent done some ROM loving for quite a while Im quite confused where to begin, do I need to upgrade CWM Manager first? I have version 3.15. Or can I go straight on new ROMs? I spent some time reading about updating CWM today and it seems I have a really dangerous kernel version, 3.0.15-I9220ZLP5-CL295568 and if I understand the CWM Manager thread correctly thats part of the dangerous kernels. Which seems quite dangerous to update it since I cant find a safe version of CWM Manager to update to.
So the bottom question, do I need to update CWM Manager first to do anything safe or update the kernel first to perhaps an old safe rooted GB kernel? All the guides and stuff says the safest way is to first install an old safe GB kernel and then install a ICS or JB kernel (not at the moment tho) but is this the truth in my case?
Anyway, I really appreciate if you could give me some advice here
Thanx in advance

There is newer cf root that is 5.6. This is a safe rooted stock kernel by chainfire with CWM manager.
The devs suggest when installing TW ics custom rom it is recommended to install it while already in ics rom.
First install stock gingerbread rom, while in gingerbread rom do the wiping data, cache, and dalvik and then flash ics rom for clean installation. DO NOT WIPE IN STOCK ICS ROM, DANGEROUS. READ THE WARNING IN THE FORUM.
You can choose any tw custom rom you like.
If you want suggestion on what custom rom just ask i gave you one.
Ok, still not sure what do to first but it is safe to install a GB rom first? Updating CWM isn't that important? What I meant was that I still cant find a fitting version to install. Nearest version is: CF-Root-SGN_DD_ODD_LP8-v5.5-CWM5.zip but thats on the danger list so Im still confused about what version to download.. :/
Perhaps CF-Root-SGN_DD_ODD_LP8-v5.6-CWM5.zip is safe to install tho?
EDIT: I saw that I had cf-root version 5.2, it was CWM Manager that was version 3.15
EDIT: getting a new baseband comes with a rom, no need to install baseband seperatly? For example, getting Cassie's XtraLiteRom Version X LC1 295Mb is getting my baseband LC1 too?

EDIT: getting a new baseband comes with a rom, no need to install baseband seperatly? For example, getting Cassie's XtraLiteRom Version X LC1 295Mb is getting my baseband LC1 too?

You can flash the cassies custom rom directly over the stunner rom if you want to, just be sure to use ABYSS KERNEL for wiping.
Base band also known as modem. There are many flashable modem to choose so no problem what modem you Want.
If you want to install cassies latest custom rom you will get also the latest CWM recovery and manager.
Uhm ok.. so much information Im confused as usual
I cant find exactly abyss kernel. Can it be this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362424/
And can I flash all roms via CWM or do I have to use PC ODIN?
EDIT: found the abyss note kernel, really slow downloading tho.

Hey guys,
So a friend of mine asked me to upgrade the ROM on his note which is running stock sammy ICS 4.0.3 and also running or crawling like ****e to 4.2.2 so first thing that comes to my mind.... easy. Root it flash CWM, backup ROM, flash slim bean build 6.
But after reading about in the note section for an hour the notion of easy went out of the window, this note is running kernel version 3.0.15-N7000DDLPA-CL711285 BasebandN7000DDLP4 Build NoIML74k.DDLPA checked out Phil3759's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191 but could not find my kernel on the list.
Guys kindly guide me as how I should go about flashing CWM so I can install custom ROM's without placing the phone in a situation that might lead to it getting bricked
Thanks in advance

I am in the same situation bro(same Kernel). did you get a solution. My phone circuit board conked off and hence I installed a new PBA however I liked kk4 and want to install on this. couldnt get the kernel
4.0.3 is the most susceptible to brick bug. So either move to a safe kernel or upgrade to a newer version like 4.0.4 or JB. Check in Philz thread for your build number kernel. If you can't find the same, any 4.0.3 kernel should do. Else upgrade the rom to a newer stock.
Or if you just want to install a custom rom, then flash any kernel and get into cwm recovery and go about the rom flashing instructions.
