I have had a O2X for a month. Actually, O2X's screen looks like a Gorilla Glass but I haven't really believed. Is it true?

And this applies to all O2X phones?

Well I guess I can rip of the "screen protector" that came preinstalled on the phone now!
Actually I would like to have confimed that the P990 has it and not just the Korean version!!! We'll probably never get that though...

ok that's indeed painfull to watch haha. i personally wouldnt remove the preapplied screenprotector. But it's nice to know the phone can handle some abuse.

It's mid-day & I am not drunk... I don't mean any insult but your post is very confusing.

Harder materials will scratch softer materials.
Basically:
Sand > Gorilla Glass > Metal > 'Standard' Glass
So if you take the 2X with you to a beach it may become scratched.

I loved the fact that the phone has gorilla glass.
But after 1 weekend involving alcohol, it's full of tiny and some deep scratches. No idea how they got there, but it certainly isn't scratch proof

Haha didnt notice that. Oh well. Gotta be careful with mine when it arrives. And sure as hell wont put a key scratch test on it.
And i am pretty sure its glass and not plastic.

oleophobic coating?

Does xperia z has oleophobic coating or any kind of coating?
From experience of xperia T, scratch easy with stock screen protector, taking off screen protector attracts finger prints and smudges. Also hard to get off unless use glass cleaner. The glass has a resistant vs oleophobic coating.
With Galaxy S3 oleophobic coating, its smooth and easy to get finger prints off without glass cleaner.
It will be a deal-breaker for me, as much as i love the design and material on xperia z.
Some kind gentleman take off screen protector and tell me how is the glass it self feels like? does it feels like the xperia T?
I dont care about which glass is stronger, i want a smooth screen without screen protector.

It is the same glass. So I think it should feel about same.

They apply a shetterproof film on the screen. If you don't want it - you can replace it with any other screen protector - or apply a second one on it. It doesn't affect looks or screen responsivness - so what's the problem here ?

Jeez... I think I might cancel my pre-order. How could they get this so wrong?!

This video is about Xperia T. There is no evidence that Xperia Z is the same other than "she said so".
Also, a shatterproof film is suddenly a bad thing...i'm confused

If you've been using a mobile phones which include a oleophobic coating for 5 years its quite a backwards step to use one without. The screen is the interface to the eye and the finger after all. Did you see the way that screen protector got scratched?
Personally I don't like screen protectors, for others that don't mind then all is good
Some people like salted nuts, others dry roasted. Nothing too confusing I hope! :silly:

I honestly don't care as i always use a screen protector and am quite used to them. If i can have both antishatter and antiscratch protectors on at the same time, without compromising display's clarity and responsiveness - it's even better.
Having just glass would be nice - but i don't believe in Gorilla Glass anymore. Had 3 phones with GG1/2 and they all got scratched very easily before i started to use protectors - so yeah, if you don't like screen protectors, Xperia Z might not be the best option as it most likely will scratch without one due to not-so-scratch-resistant antishatter film.

If you look carefully in videos on youtube it would seem that the back of the handsets attract more prints. Perhaps the front and back use different layers on the glass.
Bare in mind these are all pre-production models.

Screen looks and touch experience is my problem. I had both, xperia T, S3 and note 2. S3 screen looks very nice, feels very nice and smooth. I use swype, so i swipe alot. Using xperia T is nice too, but its not the same experience as oleophobic coating on it(S3).
If xperia z has the same glass as the xperia T, then its a deal breaker for me.
Hoping Xperia Z will be using a different glass and some kind of coating under that stock screen protector.
Note- I dont use screen protector, so replacing stock screen protector doesnt work for me.
Waiting patiently for a retail version Screen review.

Here's a good durability test from a different sony device. Hmmm seems pretty durable to me....

note screen size and device name Xperia ACTIVE

Still note that Xperia is still Xperia. Unless Sony decides to downgrade their screen technology... And size may affect durability but not in that type of tests.

Come on guys, it did ruin Xperia Z for me too. BTW gorilla glass's purpose is to prevent shattering. Oleophobic layer is done above it and that catches scratches. Same vlogger did a detail video explaining Gorilla Glass's myths of being scratch proof.

From all the prototype xperia z, it seem like it uses the same screen as xperia T. Hopefully it doesnt use the same screen as xperia T. I had both phone and xperia T is disappointing. If its the same screen then its a deal-breaker. Still waiting for retail, Somehow xperia z upgrade there phone, dont put on stock protector and put a layer of oleophobic on it, they they score gold. If not, then lots of people will be disappointing, unless your a screen protector type.

[Q] Xperia Z Dragontrail, Gorilla Glass, Polycarbonate, glass fiber

So I am planning on buying this magnificent phone but did some thinking while i was showering. Got all these text messages and tempted to text back in the shower. Since the Xperia Z is nearly made out of glass materials; according to Sony viet, I've been wondering is the same thing going to happen to the Xperia Z like the Nexus 4?
For those who already owns the Xperia Z:
It would be a huge problem for those who will have to do imports from another country. How durable are these glass? It can survive heights but how about sudden temperature change?
and one more question, there's no point applying screen protectors if you plan on getting the phone wet right?

As far as I know the Xperia Z's glass should be a bit more durable than the Nexus 4's, but until it hits the market in more countries we won't really know. I'd be surprised if the glass would crack because of temperature changes though.
Applying an extra screenprotector on top of the shatter-proof sheet shouldn't be a problem. It might loosen faster if it gets wet but I don't think you'll notice much difference.

The only difference between them is that Nexus uses Gorilla Glass, and Sony uses tempered glass. As great as Gorilla Glass is, it's hardened properties don't make it temperature resistant. The process of glass tempering, in theory, makes it resistant to sudden temperature changes - they use the same technology to make glass for ovens etc. So I think it shouldn't happen with Xperia, but we'll never know unless somebody takes time and money to make a test.
Screen protectors shouldn't be bothered by water. If they're static, then they'll stay on. Those that use glue might start to peel off after a while.

well according to that link, the back glass of the Z is made out of Gorilla glass, and the front is made out of Dragontrail.
I forgot where i read it from, some Sony employee stated that the front and the back uses the same glass. >_____>
Accordingly the glass front of the Xperia Z Dragontrail glasses of Japanese with tremendous strength capacity of about 60kg or sharp objects directly on the screen. On the back of a click-toughened Gorilla Glass scratch-resistant and finally the other components of the body using Polycarbonate material and fiberglass (glass fiber polymer) normal 300 times more durable plastic.

Nope, not yet I have washed it in the sink a few times and it just ain't bothered by any water! It's a very, very weird feeling and part of my brain was screaming "Nooooooooooo!" but it's all fine

Why would they have gorilla on the back and dragontrail on the front though?
Isn't Nexus 4 gorilla on the back or is that some kind of weaker glass? (Was thinking about the crackings due to sudden changes in temp)

No idea. Heard that Nexus 4's back is not gorilla glass though. Also, Nexus 4 wasn't the first phone to use glass back, and this problem seems to be bugging mostly Nexus 4 users ( not often found in any other brand ) so maybe it's some kind of LG specific defect.

I have a faint memory about the back not being gorilla on nexus 4 and now that you mention it i haven't hear anything about other phones with cracks (except iphones but they're meant to break just by looking at it..)

I have spoken to a Sony Rep and apparently Sony uses Gorilla Glass 2 as well as DragonTrail. Devices will come with either one installed. (you might have the front panel made of GG2 and back from DT) and consumers will not have a choice of the glass used. The back panel of the phone has an additional layer on the glass which provides some glare effect (so that could be the layer that is being scratched and not the actual glass). On the front there will be a screen protector preinstalled.
Users will not have an option to select the glass used in their phone, so we will either have GG2 or DT on the front and either GG2 or DT on the back. I think that this should also clarify the on going debate about which glass is used in Xperia Z.

I am from Poland and I spoke to official Sony rep. I got his number from a Sony Store in Poznan, Poland after I asked them if I could do a scratch test on their display device in store

I was concerned about the glass on the Nexus 4 until I dropped it once and then a couple more times... so far it is intact... in my opinion Sony has far bettef manufacturing than LG but will see what happens. Phonewise I am not impressed by the Nexus 4 but for tha price you cannot complain ...

I don't think you can use two types of glass like that, with one device getting one or another... XZ wouldn't be certified for release ( by the likes of FCC etc ) if that were true. You need to provide one, particular specification for each device to be allowed to even release it on the market. You could file a class law suit for selling randomly inferior devices as the same model and for the same price - Sony certainly wouldn't do that. There might be some regional differences, but it's certainly not GG or DT at random. I think they might have made a mistake or didn't know this at all.

Why would the FCC give a crap what glass is used? They are a communications regulator not a design regulator.
It is highly unlikely that the glass would cause communication issues, or interference with other electronics

[Q] Glass used for xPeria Z

Hello,
i was reading the thread about removing the anti-shatter film and been thinking about doing it myself, however i noticed that there is no official or at least confirmed information about the glass that is used in xPeria Z. I have read that it is Gorilla glass on the front and Dragontrail on the back or the other way around, but i could not seem to find the proof that it is actually those brands that are used.
Usually, i believe, the phone manufacturers are proud of the protection they use for their screens and tend to highlight that they are using the strongest glass available on the market, yet in Xperia Z's case it is just said that it's a scratch resistant glass with anti-shatter film on it. It might be that it's just Sony that won't talk about the glass
So if anyone knows any solid info about this, please do share it .

Sony never said (in public) what glass they used, they just said "some kind of tempered glass". So I've got no clue why Amazon says Dragontail @ front and back. Why would only they have this kind of info?

Front uses Dragontrail Glass, and the back is Gorilla Glass 2 according to slides from Sony's presentation in Hong-Kong. As long as our friend from XDA got the translation right. We can be - at least - sure there's Dragontrail and Gorilla Glass on XZ.
Interestingly though, the one slide that detailed the glass components is now missing...

Pretty much identical. I have read stories of people breaking the back panel and some breaking the front panel both from drops or pressure applied in their pockets

Yes, i have seen this slide and also i have read that it might not be 100% true, moreover the picture is taken from someone's laptop.
Some guys here on xda seem to have sources of information from inside sony, maybe they could answer the question?

It uses gorilla glass 5, which scratched very easily on my S9. I had small scratches after a day with no case on the S9. I imagine this phone will be no different.

I feel the same way. Unfortunately. I am curious about the back though...

Back seems to hold up (maybe non touch sensitive glass is easier to make scratch resistant) the front 2 scratches in the first week... And I used a soft pouch until proper accessories come out.
Got a skin on the back and a crappy plastic screen protector for now.

Allright thanks for the answer, so it seems I have to buy smth for the screen after all..

I have some scratches on mine. I am very careful with it, no coins etc. So I will definitely be using a case with the replacement phone I am getting tomorrow for display issues.

Had my first scratch on the back 3 days after receiving my phone... Now it's always in the official Huawei case...

I do wonder though, if it scratches the olephobic coating or the actual glass is scratched. A colleague of mine has the s7 until last week without a protector and said screen was always perfect. But it got fingerprinty as hell.
Wonder if one of those nano liquid coatings would smooth it out. I have accidental damage insurance so if that works I would rid of the scratches with that.

You might have a point there with the coating. I have noticed that as well on my samsung phones.
I tried that nano liquid, but havent noticed much diferrence though.

I've tried several screen protectors and they all stop fingerprint recognition working!

I guess I got lucky. I got a case and a tempered glass screen protector for free with my purchase in Taiwan. Finger print scanner works perfect. I should have checked what the brand was. It was a flagship Huawei store, so obviously they knew what they were putting on there.

See...that it why they buy iphone or smsng, cause they dont mess up important stuff... You mean the glass ones? Or the foils?

I am challenging those that think Mate 20 Pro uses Gorilla Glass (I have read the 1 or 2 reviews that state this), and it's not listed in the Gorilla Glass website. Also worried about scratches I reached out to Huawei AU and received the following:

I am seeing the above noted comments and "scratch resistant" or not, it's obvious this phone needs a case and screen protector.
I wish it had Gorilla Glass 6!
