[Q] Ubuntu for Asus padfone - Ubuntu Touch Ports to Android

Hello,
I'm looking for a new phone now, and I really want ubuntu OS on it. Either as ubuntu for android or ubuntu mobile OS.
At the moment the Asus padfone seems to me like the perfect device for Ubuntu, but it doesn't seem like anyone agrees. There is no mention of it anywhere that I can see and I can't even find the device on xda. I have contacted Asus and suggested that they work on it, but of course they cannot reveal anything to me.
Does anyone know if there are people working on it? Is it likely that the padfone infinity can run ubuntu alongside it?
Just a question about ubuntu for android: If I run the desktop OS, I will be able to run games on steam? And other games like Heroes of newerth that have a linux version. How well will these games run? I mean: How far behind are ARM than x86?
Thank you

I was really hoping somebody would bring this up... I did some research on the Padfone before and getting Ubuntu on it works like this: if you can get CM10 working on the Padfone then it can be done. The problem is I haven't seen anybody willing to port CM10 to the Padfone, but it can be rooted.

Is this only valid for Padfone "1"? Or is this the case for both of them?
Im thinking about getting the padfone infinity (nr 3). Obviously no one can answer about infinity since it hasnt been released yet, but I was hoping to see if anyone cared about the product line at all

Hi,
are you people still thinking about this because I'm really interested.
I have the PadFone 1 with phone/tab/keyboard/stylus and think the ASUS done rubbish on the latest version of the firmware.
I'd really like to go with Ubuntu but need to be sure about it as this is my only phone and don't want to brick it.
Maybe you guys should also look at www.padfoneclub.com. They have a forum and people really interested by the device.

ubuntu
Hello guys! Any updates? Did anybody manage to install ubuntu on their Padfone? As I just ordered my Padfone Infinity.

Any News
I have asus padfone infinity and i would like to have Ubuntu on it.
what i don't understand is why the phone is neglected in everything
its one of the best ones i bought.

I need some advice...tablet construction

Alright, I am pretty well versed in the building of computers and such....and I figured it might be time to try a tablet....I mean, at least explore the options. And I thought it would be a huge challenge....and I saw that one Carbon Tablet that was coming out before the Ipod some guy built...and I've toyed around with Carbon Fiber body stuff before I thought this would be a fun project.
I have decided that theoretically it would be best to build this tablet to run on Android so that it could be upgraded to Honeycomb.
What exactly should I be looking for to run this thing? I'm thinking Capacitive screen probably, I assume Tablets run on SSD's, what type of processor etc?
I am sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I figured if anyone knows what it takes to run Android well....it's these guys.
Thanks!!

well, id have no idea how to make a tablet... but i know that they run on ARM processors, which are most of the time 'texas instrument OMAPS'
i know they usually have flash storage (of course)
But unfortunately for you, i believe that all tablets have custom designed Mobo's, and as ive never seen a "make your own tablet" kit, i dont see where youd find one... (unless you make a super-size tablet with a nano-itx mobo... but then it might be too large and you may as well make a netbook)
EDIT: heres a link to a wikipedia page about texas instrument omap processors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Instruments_OMAP
in fact, do look into the possibility of nano-itx boards... you might be able to make a windows 7 tablet?

(?) Dual OS for Tab!?

Is it possible to run dual OS on the galaxy S tab? Like Android and Apple !?

Is that a serious question?

Seems like a legitimate question to me, ViewSonic's ViewPad 10 already does Android-Windows dualbooting, and XDA itself has a thread about dualbooting the HD2 with WM and Android.
If the OP's asking about Android and iOS specifically though, then probably the answer might be no. If someone could do it though, it might actually be a good thing for the Android crowd: shows the Apple fans that choice and customizability is a good thing.
I was thinking the other day that my Tab would be pretty cool if running Windows Thin PC, saw info and a download on the MS site the other day while working on my wifes netbook.
I dont see a problem with either a full working version of Ubuntu or Windows on the GT and Android, or just the full OS. Seems reasonable to put an OS on what is essentially a tablet PC.
I would think its just a matter of a bios, and loading the OS, but I am not a programmer, so I could very well be wrong.
But....I'd load Windows or Ubuntu on the tab if it gave me the 3G ability as well as all other functions.

IIRC I think there's already a thread on XDA on bringing Ubuntu to the Tab. With Windows it might be trickier. The ViewSonic ViewPad 10 runs on Intel Atom, which is already used by other netbooks that run Windows. Windows might not be designed to run on ARM however, which is used on many Android devices. Processor design differences may be the key factor in porting the OS. (I've gotten Gingerbread to run on my Atom netbook though, alas I still couldn't get the touch screen to work)
Would be the first to jump onto dualbooting Android with Windows if it ever comes to fruition though; I'm a Windows developer and it'll be cool if I could write small apps and use them on my Tab.

You can't run Windows because there is currently no ARM version, though MS say that they will support ARM in Windows 8, but by the time this sees the light of day, the Tab will be obsolete.
There is a thread in the dev forum about porting Ubuntu to the Tab, but I believe it is still a long way from fully functional.

Dave
I already posted the question about fully functions in ubuntu for the tab. Specially the phone and sms functions but they denied it. I keep following and hope some day it will work

since both iOS and Android are ARM based in most cases, you could probably make it happen.
Both Android and iOS are Unix based, so we could achieve this.
Also
It could be easier to port iOS than Honeycomb because iOS source code is avalaible for public, for improvements and bug seeking.
So, Yes, we could have dual OS on the tab, it could be windows, Ubuntu, Maemo, iOS and even Symbian

Ubuntu phone os

Ubuntu just released Ubuntu phone os as see running on a galaxy nexus. This thing looks wonderful and I can wait to see it come to the nexus 4. Check this out
http://mobile.theverge.com/2013/1/2/3827922/ubuntu-phone-os-announcement
If it was up to me I think this is what android should evolve into even if it meant Google buying Ubuntu.
This is very well thought out is which basically uses the entire phone screen things are done through swypes and speech and everything looks like it works. The only thing may be app support.
Here is a hands on video by The Verge and Engadget

Before becoming an android fan I always thought that it would be better to have a full fledge os and not what android had to offer. I would love a.port of this on my tablet. Just running a full office suite on my tab or phone is a dream come true

This looks amazing I really think Google should purchase Ubuntu. They would have a desktop is and a phone is while they could intergrate their play store along with their core Google services.

Its not a full fledged Linux OS its Ubuntu's version of a phone OS, basically Ubuntu Android. The docking mentioned in the promo sounds like the Motorola Atrix concept all over. There are developers who have ported Ubuntu to other phones but they pretty much had limited usability for lack of drivers; no wifi, data, etc. This should port over easier as it uses android drivers. Also sounds like all android apps will not work with this?

It is great there is a little lag but this is pre release software and I believe it could be easily fixed. But even with the lag on a galaxy nexus I think this would run beautifully smooth on a nexus 4.
Edit:Thread updated with engadgets hands on

Yep it doesn't look like android apps would work, but if they could make that work or even evolve android into something like this it would be cool.
What's the definition of "full fledged" Linux OS? We're getting close on the kernel. Otherwise install Busybox and you're there, IMO
Exactly like Ubuntu's Desktop the limitations here will be apps.. I prefer my Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux Mint + Cinnamon over all OS's including Chrome & MacOS, but the lack of apps (which isn't changing anytime soon) will be insurmountable

Yes the os is is nice and it does work, but the major downfall of this is app support and developer support;they need this to take Ubuntu phone os to the top.

Well, it'll obviously be a lot better when Ubuntu creates it rather than uninvolved developers, of course. Ubuntu is usually not one to disappoint.
Also, I don't really get why they skipped the Nexus 4 and went with the Galaxy Nexus. Maybe it's just cause not enough people own the Nexus 4 yet, and due to supply as well, rather than demand.
I think this should be Android based, like TouchWiz. Then we could just easily flash it like a custom ROM and all our apps would be compatible and available from GPlay.
I think I'll still try this out though, looks promising.
Did I hear that it won't come to phones until 2014?

Purchasable phones is what they meant by that. The firmware images are being released soon, which should find there way to a multitude of devices shortly.
It'll be much better than any other OS as long as it gets support, the desktop version is amazing but lack of developer support means you have to use Windows still. I'm not a fan of stock Android, Google never seem to be able to keep up, Touchwiz is so much better. So I cannot wait to see what Ubuntu will turn out like after a few revisions.

There was a dev in the Incredible forums who tried to port Ubuntu to the phone, he got it to boot and then pretty much quit. I think the same thing was also tried with the Eris back in 2010.
Was just reading multiple articles on this seems very promising
sent from one of the NEXUS twins 4 or 7.....
I am guessing its's going to be open source like openwebos(so we can port it ). Can anyone confirm that?
It's just the beginning...
Ubuntu for Android is coming next year. I did a quick article for these guys below. About half way down is the video demonstrations of Ubuntu for Android, which is separate from Ubuntu Phone from what I understand.

Dual Boot Possible?

Was curious if anyone one has looked into dual booting on this device. Like Firefox OS and Android. If no one has checked into ill will when i get my phone back friday. If its not possible then maybe ill just try porting Firefox OS for our device. Already looked into the firefox porting and doesnt look like it will be that hard to get it on our devices. however i still prefer dualboot if possible.

Would be nice but I don't think its possible, but there was something in the galaxy s thread about it so idk.maybe talk to camcory about it.
Ya that's what gave me the idea about doing it for our phones. I wait on asking camroy til i get my phone in and get at least a native port of Firefox OS before worrying the dual boot part for now. Plus I'll have to test the port and see whats majorly broken and what is not. Worse case I know i can take a different approach and do like I did back in the day with my windows mobile 2003 phone and have it on the sdcard. So you start up like normal into (for this case just saying how the windows mobile/android boot worked) Windows Mobile. Then launch an app that shuts down windows mobile completely to free up resources then it boots up android GB (when i did this) from sdcard. It really wasn't hard to get it to do that. So i don't see why we couldn't do the same for this phone but Android and Firefox OS. Least the brighter side of using android and firefox is that they both are made for the same hardware where compared to my windows mobile phone it ran an xscale cpu ( Windows only cpu ). So it shouldn't feel slower than what it would by it's self. Android just wasn't made for intel xscale cpus.

Well the s4 has dual boot and HTC is capable and what i was reading in the galaxy s forum it looks like i might be capable. And for firefox i see in the nexus s the camera and bluetooth doesnt work but i think cam has fixes for that so i guess youll find out once you compile the rom. If you need help with testing or anything let me know I'd be happy to help.

Well got my phone back already got AOIP on it and been testing out the device its self to make sure it wasn't defective and its not. So now I'm gonna start working the firefox os port with in the next few days. its been quite a while since I've done any programing and what not so not promising anything but I will definitely try. So bare with me on progress. Any how I know we can run firefox os on our phones. according to Mozilla ]https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox_OS/Introduction hardware requirements is arm6 cortex5 or better cortex 7 with neon, adreno 200. then the rest is standard wifi/3g gps and others like that. So yeah its possible. its just building the rom and fixing device specific bugs. Also yeah I wouldn't mind having internal beta testers when i get to that point. Just glad mozilla has a lot of useful resources on porting it.

[Q] Installing Debian Possible Someday?

It seems from a quick look here, that installing debian isn't possible until the device can be rooted and the bootloader modified.
Given the track record with Asus's Android devices, does it look like it will eventually happen? If so, how much of the hardware is likely to be supported in debian, and specifically, will the touch screen still be usable?
I really like the hardware on this machine, but I'll need a full out OS to pull the trigger on getting one, and in the high-res screen computer category, there are slim pickings. Dell with the lousy keyboard, Lenovo with screen colour problems, and Samsung and Apple with very expensive price points.
