Hey guys, thought I'd share my LEGO car dock with everyone.
First about the phone:
HTC Droid Incredible running
2.15 Radio
CM6 9/17 Nightly
With a shell/holster case combo
Then the vehicle:
2002 Honda Civic EX 2 door coupe
Pioneer stereo system with AUX/Bluetooth/CD/iPod/XM Radio support
The LEGO set:
Jedi Starfighter
And without further delay, the pictures:
(Sorry about the glare, didn't realize the sunroof was cover was open until halfway through)
Yeah, the R2D2 legs acting as the front bumper to the phone isn't the prettiest of options, but I felt that between making the dock as small and as unobtrusive as possible, aesthetics, and functionality... this option filled the first and last options the best out of any other combination of parts.
Now for the ultimate in awesomeness, I decided to try out putting a movie on the Dinc then streaming the audio through the bluetooth. There are some issues with the audio being weird. I don't think its the blueooth itself, I think its the fact that the 1 hour episode I put on there is almost 1.5GB and ridiculously hi-def. I'll try out another movie this weekend. Heres some pictures featuring an episode of Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
So far, "structural integrity tests" have proven that this baby can take an amazing amount of shock. Took a two hour drive with my girlfriend and a friend and drove around the rural parts of my area. There was a few bumpy dirt roads and the whole time this thing kept together and more importantly kept the phone steady.
I used to have this awesome desktop dock for it too, but I tore it down the other week. Maybe I'll rebuild if I get tired of this one o.o
Best.....Dock......Ever.....Thanks for sharing. Made me LOL Hopefully wikitude drive goes live soon, then I'll need a dock that let's the camera see the road, and this gives me ideas.
Edit: Your stereo does not have audio in?

It does, but I never found a use for it. Plus i'd have to drill a hole and run the AUX cable to the back. So far the iPod cable that runs into the glove compartment and the bluetooth as worked alright ^.^
Awesome. Any instructions for setup?
Yeah sure if theres enough demand i'll take it apart and put it together again on camera.
Dude! I like that! Post some instructions!!

Magnetic Trick #1
Okay, so you are loving that you can sling a football game to your new NC while snacking in the kitchen, but your are stumped.....where can you safely mount your nook? If you purchased a Industriell Easel Cover, then your problem is solved. It turns out that the magnet, built to hold the clasp in place, is a very strong rare earth type. So strong in fact, that you can mount the entire thing on the refrigerator door. I know it seems risky, but the mount is surprisingly firm. Now, I not suggesting you attempt with house full of drunken Super Bowl buddies, or lot of active refrigerator friendly little ones about; but for breakfast news viewing you might find it handy.
****note: Any metal surface will work, you could for example use the side of the refrigerator if you find the door too risky. Please whatever you do, don't use the oven.
Magnetic Trick #2
Still not sold on this versatile NC cover? Then check out this second horizontal or vertical mounting option. Take a metal bookend holder, the old school library type, with the cork or felt protective base. Bend the vertical tab to your favorite viewing angle, then slide it between the flap and back cover. The magnets stick to the bookend, the mount is extremely stable ,and it looks nice to!
Very cool. Thanks for the info. Now if I only had a car from the 60's or older, this would make a perfect dash mount.
I shudder to think of driving an old car like that; drum brakes, metal rings on the steering wheel, no seat belts, metal dash and seats without head rests. How did people live though accidents?
OP thanks for solidifying my choice. I was on the fence before this idea of yours.

It turns out that I have such a car, and old 66 mustang convertible, and I used to drive it, single bowl drum brakes and all, in Houston traffic! Yes, I was younger, yes I was very very, okay, extremely stupid, but the funny thing was the way other people reacted. I had driven an old 3/4 ton company truck and it was dog eat dog.....brutal Darwin style driving, but when I hit the road in the Mustang, the traffic parted like for the Red Sea for Moses. People would wave me in, if you've ever hazarded the Houston Interstate nightmare you can appreciate how incredible that is. It was an amazing experience. Hmmm, you've got me thinking now, I might have go see if that thing will stick to the dash...........

The Nook Color works well with my slingbox, I think I have an AV model. I can also confirm that it tethers to my captivate (froyo 2.2 rom) and slings over cell network.
I almost learned about the magnet the hard way. Was home working on a computer and had my nook next to me with this case and just about set a hard drive down on top of it until I noticed all of the screws sticking together. I just figured the magnet was in the metal buckle and not the case. Never thought about sticking it to the fridge though. Tried it and it worked pretty well. THANKS!

Well, solid state drives are getting cheaper and faster every day. For that matter, I haven't used my venerable old laptop much since I fell in love rooting some nookie. If the recent breakthroughs in Bluetooth plays out I might have to retire the old girl.
Wow! I wonder how early BN opens...
very darn cool...I was trying to stomach getting the Lautner case, as I wanted it to look half descent but want portrait and landscape positions (landscape for airplane flights)...I may go with this...
Thanks to the OP...
I got my nook a week before my wife went into labor. When we were leaving the hospital I forgot my nook on the rook of our car. Our house is about 9 turns and 4 miles away with speeds from 40-60 mph. I got to about 1 mile away from home going 60 mph and I heard a thump. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw my nook on the spoiler. I stopped and everything was fine. I am betting the magnet helped the nook stay on top of our car and I am so thankful I got the case.
Bouncing Baby
Nice magnetic nook save and a new baby to boot. Heck a new baby is almost as nice as getting a new phone, even better because the baby will get continuous free upgrades for life. Samsung and HTC can't match that. All joking aside though, can you imagine how sad and primitive all Dads' hot technology will look to that little one twenty years hence? Well my best wishes to mommy, the little one......and congratulations to the new Dad!
I was planning on going to BN this morning to buy this case and use it with the book-end mod for landscape viewing, but then I found (and ordered) this:
It's under $20 and has 17 5-star reviews and 3 4-star reviews (out of 20 total reviews). There are also a couple of customer-contributed images of a Nook Color in a case sitting in it, in both portrait and landscape.
Hi jason, I saw that stand too and at the time I thought it might make a nice bedside stand. I went with the mag cover for the portability, the protective cover it would provide and, because of my poor impulse control..., the old "I have to have it right now". Its best feature, the magnetic component, was an unexpected bonus.
I'm still interested in how your stand performs, stability wise or, any such observations you might wish to share, once you take the plunge and get some user experiance.

I got fed up with the somewhat pathetic selection of docks for the Streak so built my own.
I took the genuine Dell clamshell case (that I got a full refund for.. as it was so naff), cut the plastic sleeve out of it, glued up and tidied the material underneath and then glued the rear "prop" up, then drilled and mounted the case to Brodit mount. Screws are recessed so as not to scratch the Streak back.
True I still have to remove the Streak from my beloved TufLuv case, but it doesn't wobble or dance even when I take the 4x4 off the road!
Nice work use what you have!

I'm more interested to see what you're driving. Manual tranny with manual 4wd? Nice it's sooooooooooo hard to find stuff like that in the US. Everything is that electronic bull**** that's pure rubbish. Also we're full of a bunch of sack of retards that can't even drive a manual.
If I had to guess I'd say it's a honda passport or isuzu rodeo (same thing just rebranded)...but it's hard to tell
If it is a passport/rodeo I can vouch that although they arent the greatest cars for road use they are pretty decent off-road even stock.
That does look pretty sweet. How firmly is the device held in? I have the official Dell car mount: the phone is held so tight that I often rip the whole thing off the dash trying to get it out. Can you go portrait too or are you fixed landscape?

The car is a Land Rover Discovery. Awesome retrain (it has the manual low/high transmission)
I am using the Brodit dash mount and a swivel mount so I can put it in portrait mode, I prefer landscape though. Mounts are rock solid, quite pleased with them.

Not sure where you're from but where I live in the US, 70% of us use manuals and about 2/3rds of those are 4WD. Go to a Subaru lot. Everything they have is AWD.

Tuff Luv case, a man of taste
Definitely a nice case. I was thinking about trying to do something with the G2 dock, but that would be floppy as hell. This is better, and with the mount you're using, there's something to use for cable management too.

I bought one of their mounts for my SGS III that I have coming, little did I know I was going to buy a tablet that would even more awesome to mount in the car..
You can find it on Amazon for $50 .. free shipping with Amazon Prime (ships from Las Vegas) .. I just ordered it because it's sooo cool and I didn't want it to sell out on me! LOL..

What ya'll think?
In terms of Quality... it comes assembled and functions exactly how it is in the video. It's very solid and secure. So your getting exactly what you see.
To make adjustments, it takes two hands. I doubt you'll be switching back and forth between landscape and portrait though. There is a knob in the back that makes adjusting easier and you can just tighten it when your done, but I didn't mess with that too much.
For those who don't have aux ports on their radio, I use a GOgroove FlexSMART X2.
Update: Since Youtube flagged the video with the Nexus 7, then deemed it okay, I'll have to re-record it when I have a spare moment. So maybe Saturday or Sunday I'll have a new one up!
If I helped in anyway, please hit the thanks button
It looks sweet but I was spoiled by Samsung's oem gs2 car dock that has charger input and audio output.
That's cool .. I have a bluetooth FM radio adapter as well. So you can stream pandora, google music, and phone calls as well (if you have the right setup)..
I was planning on using it for a gps also.
Is the quality and does it work well even for 50 bucks?
Streaming through bluetooth and then fm? that has to sound horrible.

No, it streams through the 3.5mm jack, then FM. The transmitter I have is pretty high quality, I don't hear any static. I don't have an aux port on my radio.
The bluetooth is so I can answer calls using the fm unit.
I should have the mount on Monday, and I'll borrow a tablet from someone in the coming week and post pictures of my setup.
As far as the mount goes, go to that site and look at the pictures, watch the videos ... go on Amazon and read the reviews ..
I might have to pick this up...my car receiver support bluetooth audio so I don't have to worry about cables (except the car charger) and a 7" tablet is perfect for a car environment. I'm kind of getting sick of messing around with phones in the car.

The Kropsson you linked to is the 800 which only goes up to 5 inches (I guess thats why it's 36 bux). I think you were thinking of the Kropsson 900, which is 50 bux. Looks nice! Thanks for the link!

Here is the Kropsson 850 WITHOUT the charging ports.
http://www.amazon.com/Kropsson-Universal-Tablet-Mount-Holder/dp/B007C94EY0/ref=pd_cp_cps_0
Yeah..these are all the same make (with different names on them), with the exception that the Kropsson comes in different sizes and includes the charging port, which is pretty cool.
My video can serve as a visual for all of the models. It's going to operate the exact same way.
I prefer the 800 since its better suited for 7" tablets in landscape. I want it to sit as low as possible in landscape mode. Seeing how the Exxon rotated upwards for portrait mode was the deciding factor. Not to mention I feel better knowing that its being supported on the bottom when in landscape. But yea, i think its from the same manufacturer, and labeled differently. If you prefer portrait mode then the Exon or 900 is the way to go.
ps. There is a 750 model that is even cheaper, and made for 7" but you lose the charging ports on the back and the red/blue led lights. Need more blinking light! :silly:
My only issue is the disk on the dash. I have one for the arkon mount that only lasted a few weeks. Now the car mount wont stay because I think the HOT Texas sun warped the plastic. I can only stick the mount on the window.

Hot sun will always melt the glue on those adhesive plates. Not sure what other options are, you can use an epoxy but that is a permanent solution.
Plastidip also sells a can of there stuff, maybe you can fashion a smooth spot where the suction cup will adhere too.

I've had mine mounted for the past 3 weeks in the Hot California Sun. I will tell you that I actually keep a microfiber cloth covering that portion of the unit. I've never tried removing it and you'll see from my video that everything is stable. There's no need to remove the unit (as that would be very annoying) as I've experienced so far.
Also a note on the mounting disc, I think there's a picture of it in the OP. It's an aluminum disc that has a SUPER adhesive that is installed on your dash. Then you place the car mounts suction on top of it, press down, and there is an additional lever that sucks the air out and really locks it down. It's not going anywhere

I'm using this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/XENOMIX-2X-...der_Mounts_Stands_Holders&hash=item41751a2e33
pros:
easy to mount/unmount (no for my wife though lol)
there is an opening for the charger.
you can mount it on the dash of you car (I installed it on the dash of my RAV4 right in the middle, and my dash is not flat and smooth)
cons:
it started to vibrate and make noises after 2 months of use.
not to much of adjustment for me.
it's getting really hot from direct sun (its black I know)

I have an Exogear in black and an Exogear 2 in white. They both work perfectly fine(just bought the 2 to see what changes were made), and Exogear is by far the best choice in my opinion! Mountek nGroove Universal CD Slot Mount
I have had this one for about 4 months and I gotta say its the best mount I have ever used. I have a Jeep Wrangler and a Mini Cooper so I am constantly flipping it back and forth between vehicles. I also travel alot for work in rental cars and trucks, so its great having a mount that fits in almost any vehicle with no fuss. It takes about 2 seconds to get it out and move it to the other vehicle. Plus it puts the phone exactly where I want it. I use the GPS alot but more than anything else I use it for music, so its great having it right by the stereo. Plus is minimizes the cable runs across the dash and such. And it leaves no suction cup stains on my glass.
Here is an amazon link, I have bought 3 of them, one for work, one for me and one for my wife. Well worth the money.

Additionally, you have the ability to rotate your device 360 degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise, while it is still docked. Easily switch your cell phone to landscape or portrait mode without taking your eyes off the road.
Side Tilt and Quick Device Release
The device cradle rests on a ball hinge, so you can easily adjust the viewing angle: up, down, diagonal, or side-to-side. Plus, you can quickly and easily load and release your devices with one hand."

Yes this is the first mount that I have had which actually works great in landscape mode as well. All of the other mounts I have had did it as well but seemed to only be very stable in portrait mode while this one is solid from a vibration/shake standpoint in both modes. I find that when I use WAZE I love it in landscape mode but other than that I stay in portrait.

Maybe I missed it, but what mounts are people using with the zero lemon battery/case? I apologize in advance, if I missed it mentioned above.
