Now I'm coming from the SGS 1 (i9000) which has no bootloader locks at all.
My mother recently purchased an Xperia Z on three. Xperia Z phones have a similar unlocking procedure as the HTC Dev one, however it can only be performed if the phone has unlocking enabled. Only naturally, I have heard Three disabled it on the Z and I haven't really confirmed otherwise.
My question is above, specifically relating to the Three network. As far as I'm aware they do have a custom firmware and have changed the boot screen. I have seen a thread on XDA talking about allowing unlocked phones to change it.
While I wait for an S-Off, can this phone still be unlocked via HTC Dev? This is more aimed at Three UK users.
If it can.... I may buy one today !

I'm not sure, but I think yes. And for the topic, you can change yourself. Edit post and click on 'go advanced'

Yes as in, yes it is dependent on network. Or yes as in, yes it can be unlocked?

Can anyone confirm this because I am so close to just heading out tomorrow and buying one? As long as this signal and battery life stuff checks out. Reading the thread right now.

Haha, my heart skipped a few beats there when I read the title. Damn it
Moto shipped the D3 with a locked bootloader, but they will unlock later this year (supposedly).
Plus, per their quote from another Engadget article
We completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it

Motorola will make the first move with the bootloaders, then Verizon (or whoever else) will make theirs. Dunno how long between Motorola and us getting the unlock, but they can delay the process
Lol you got me there

For the love of God, change the OP title.
I feel a little left out in the dark. Droid 3 has been out longer and it seems there has been literally zero movement on it. Sucks living in an area with the only available carriers being Verizon and AT&T.

It's a locked bootloader running 2.3.4 which is extremely tough to crack. Plus you add in the fact that every single known exploit is blocked, that's the development delay.

I doubt we'll see the bootloader unlocked. Look at HTC even. They've released their list of devices they'll be allowing the web-based unlock to happen with and it's over a dozen deep with not a single Verizon device on the list. It's Verizon that doesn't want us to have the unlock, not Motorola.
If Motorola really wanted us to have an unlock they would leak it. Maybe Googlorola will instead?

Motorola probably has a contract with Verizon that they will not unlock the phones without their permission first, which they would be breaching and surely be sued for if they simply just went ahead and did it.

Did you buy the phone outright from a Sony store? If so, go ahead and get an unlock code for it. According to most places reporting on the ban that I've looked at, it's only subsidised handsets that are covered under this downright stupid piece of legislation

Just have someone with T-mobile call t-mobile and get an unlock code. They do not require a minimum period. It only takes about 2 weeks for them to process it. I have done it many times with phones. That said, I am almost certain that this phone only works on T-mobile's bands, but I could be wrong. But it is branded for T-mobile. If you wanted one for AT&T, you should try selling the one you have and ordering an international version.

The phone is actually out today. I will try to ask tmobile to get the unlock code probably next week. As I know there is a requirement to submit an unlocking request. The phone need to be used on a prepaid number, which I have, more than 40 days.
International version doesn't support US LTE at all unless there will be C6606 for international.

Have you tried your contract sim in it?
If you have and it doesn't work then you'll have to contact the original carrier for a sim unlock code

Cheers mate, I've ordered it, received and unlocked it within an hour.
Coming from HTC Desire HD, I was thrilled when I laid my hands on the Sony Xperia Z. But when I played around and wanted to tinker, I was utterly disappointed that my Xperia bootlaoder has a permanently locked bootloader. To my knowledge and spending hours on the net trying to figure out that there are no free or paid ways to get it unlocked I feel really disappointed that this powerful beast cannot be unlocked to run custom roms.
Thinking of selling my Xperia Z but it is such and elegant device. I wonder whether any developers are working on a solution for this or weather theres any prospect of finding a solution.

What on earth are you on about, the Sony XZ is one of the ONLY phones you can get permanently UNLOCKED, you simply go to the Sony site and you sign away your warranty and bam in return you get a bootloader that is permanently unlocked that you "officially" cannot re lock.
I think OP means carrier branded phones that come with an unlockable bootloader. Even Sony can't unlock such devices.

Some phones (usually carrier subsidised handsets) have non unlockable bootloaders.
The OP is asking if anyone is working on a way to bypass that restriction.

It's simple to understand, if your Phone comes from a carrier then there's a 99% chance the bootloader can't be unlocked. I've SIM unlocked mine but the bootloader is a no go.

The only problem with XZ is that its sealed to ensure its water resistant and theres no way you can get access to tinker with internals
My question to developer community is...Is it a no go forever or will someone at some point invest their precious time and energy on developing an unlock solution or should i get rid of this permanently locked XZ? Coming from HTC, I have little or less experience with Sony. Has it been an issue before eg Xperia series and some where down the line, developers at XDA found a solution? If so i want to wait. XZ is damn good phone and i really love it!!
There are some workaround for it to unlock at the Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 forum, and there were some discussion in the qna thread about this. Better u check it out.
So I'm gonna buy one of these and the three locked variant is cheaper. Does three not allow boot loader unlocking, as they did with their xperia T?
