[Q] 3D Game Performance: Jelly Bean vs. Gingerbread - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howdy folks
I've noticed something rather perplexing: game performance for Note on GB Roms is streets ahead of JB Roms in some cases. Bear in mind that this is all subjective (ie I haven't measured FPS) although in most cases where this is noticeable the performance difference is so large that I hardly need to. Think jerking and stuttering movement that interferes heavily with gameplay.
It only seems to effect some titles though: for example Dead Trigger and Shadowgun seem equally good on either (maybe the same game engine is the reason?) to my subjective eye. Real Racing 3 and Let's Golf 3 are very, very bad on JB roms that I've tried. Let's Golf 3 is jerky graphically. Real Racing 3 is jerky to the point of being unplayable.
On GB roms Let's Gold 3 is silky, silky smooth - literally everything, it's an older game of course. Real Racing 3 is jerky at times, in particular on the scenes before you start racing where it shows the cares, but not as much as JB. During gameplay it varies from jerky but still playable (when there's lots of cars/crashes) to that wonderful framerate steadiness where you feel in complete control of the car because everything FPS is consistently the same. Which it is not on JB at all. I realise RR3 is probably getting a bit beyond the Notes capabilities but the difference between JB and GB is night and day. And that's before I use any Chainfire3D features on GB.
I've tried Stock GB and Rocket ROM GB but only 3 JB ROMs - that being ParanoidAndroid 2.54 (utacka), PA 3.10 and Stunner v2 to get these subjective results.
So point of this post is: are all JB Roms like this for 3D performance? Particuarly interested in people that have tried RR3 and LG3 though I'm sure there's other games that this effects. I have read that Asylum and BlackCNA are good for 3D gaming - is it better/same than GB though?
I'm really in love with ParanoidAndroid features other than the gaming issues so I might try a dual booting solution or swap between nandroid backups to have a GB and JB roms even though this will be a PITA (the dual booting would require flashing a kernel before changing ROMS though at least I can do it online with KTools .
Just wondering

Daily usage for the LG 2x

Hi all,
For those already using the LG 2x as their daily phone, may i just ask how's the performance in terms of daily usage? Some reviews says it's speedy, so does benchmarks but i have also read reviews that said it should be much better considering that it's dual core and at times, there's some slight stuttering due to the custom froyo skin that LG has.
I'm presently using a Nexus S and it's smooth as butter running custom roms and oc kernel. I'll probably be able to sell off the phone at no loss and top up something like USD120 to get the LG 2x when it arrives in Singapore in the next 2-3 weeks.
Anyone here that have tried both phones and able to provide me with some insights on if i should bother switching? How's the real life use (browsing net, playing music, batt life while playing games etc) difference felt between the processing powers of the two phones?
As it is, the Nexus S can do everything i want except for those Tegra 2 only games. I don't really need a 1080 HD video capability, HDMI mirroring and the 16 Gig space, although limiting is not a deal breaker for me.
Has there been any indications that it'll be able to run custom roms and kernel soon? i know paul from modaco is looking into it at the moment.
Thanks all!
Hi there, I'm also considering between Nexus S and Optimus 2x.
Would appreciate any feedbacks from the users here.
About custom roms - Paul said yesterday that today would be available beta of clockworkmod for download, everything seems that O2X will be great phone for custom roms and stuff Probably there will be functioning Clockwork Mod and developers cooking even before you even get your O2x )
It is lightning fast, and much faster than the Nexus S on stock 2.3. I know because I tried them side by side.
The reviews are correct though, there is some stuttering. I'd say it's annoying as hell, but I'm an impatient guy when it comes to tech-gadgets. I'm sure it's only software issues that will be addressed, either by LG or by custom ROM's.
Sometimes it takes about 5-10 seconds to open the apps list when adding them to the home screen, and sometimes it's as quick as expected.
Sometimes it will stutter while scrolling but most of the time it's smooth as butter. You can clearly tell that there's nothing wrong with the performance because of the smoothness, but there are undoubtedly some serious flaws in the implementation causing intermittent stutter that needs to be addressed.
Playing games is as smooth as I've ever seen. It's simply amazing; There's no stutter or lag AT ALL, so the stuttering you see in the menus seem to be fairly isolated. So far I have tested Angry Birds and AB Rio in addition to Fruit Ninja + Samurai II from Tegra Zone. Samurai II on the TV looks better than a Wii game and is closer to PS3 to be honest.
Another evidence of the incredible performance is the Gallery app. My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw how quick and smooth it is. My Nexus One is like an old Sony Ericsson with Symbian in comparison. If you haven't tried an SE phone with Symbian, consider yourself lucky.
One thing also worth considering is the fact that Froyo is not really optimised for DualCore phones. When gingerbread hits the LG 2x then the speed difference between it and other single core phones should become even more apparent.
the only problem i have with o2x is LG's poor implementation of the LG skin on it. LG's UI w/c i believe can easily be fixed by tweaks/updates or custom roms. that's why im quite happy that g2x will come with vanilla android froyo.
hope LG recognizes the 'MINOR' flaws and stuttering when on the menu/app drawer. but besides that, all other things like browsing, gaming, camera, texting, calling etc are Great and is superior than any other phones in the market as of the moment.

Gingerbread isn't currently optimized to take advantage of the dual core devices either... Hence the information about a version 2.4 of Gingerbread dropping in April. http://goo.gl/b7P0g
I had mine for 8 days now and Im still not used to how fast it is!
My last phone was a HTC Hero, wich I really cant compare it to, but I have played around a lot with iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S and Desire HD and my phone eat em for breakfast. Mutitasking games like Angry Birds and Reckless Drivning is really fast and smooth.
Even though 02X dont have 2D accelerated graphics and iPhone 4 does, the smoothness in the menus are pretty much the same.
Amazing fast phone used my old desire (moved to my wife) and it scared the heck out of me found it very slow go figure lol
My son and I uses both the 2x and coming from desires...
Love the screen over the amoled great quality only notice with black when playing not a full screen movie... But the again almost not seen this...
Browsing the net is great and fast deciding which browser to use dolphin mini or opera the latest with flash.
Actually we found the camera great and the sound is great too...
Running myself launcherpro and the diskspace room 1.45gb to store apps beside the sd.
That's what i hated with my desire lol 148 mb
Battery life is building up nice now after 12 days 38 hours normal usage and heavy 8 hours...
lol and we have gorilla glass too
Bottom line an amazing fast phone just love it.

The stutter/lag I saw some of seems to be as good as gone after upgrading with all the latest stuff from MoDaCo.
Ok guys just a quick one... Checked out the phone for quite a bit at the retail shop...
First Impressions...
It's both fast & slow at times. However believe that this should be able to be addressed via software eg custom roms etc... Games tried all seem smooth. Opening of apps at times there was lag but it was somewhat random and can't quite pinpoint. Other times it was fast.
Installed Golauncher, ADW and LauncherPro and all seemed to work alright. Do note was just a quick one at the shop...
For those into it...
Quadrand Std - 2600 - 2700 +
Linpack Score - 36 MegaFlops...
Neocore - er sorry don't recall & first time running it... 75???
Nothing else really significant to say except that in a nutshell this phone has potential...

Best gaming rom (especially SubWay Surfers) ?

Ok so ,first of all i DO know there are other "best gaming rom" topics, but with so many new roms out there,i was wondering if anybody changed his mind.
I used helly bean and some other jellybean rom and it wasnt ok. Now i came back to CyanogenMod 7 and i like it as stability and battery life.
The game im interested in is Subway Surfers (my girlfriend is obsessed by this game). Sometimes it moves ok,sometimes the fps is very low.
Also keep in mind that i tried with and without "Game Booster" at ALL levels.
The battery with CM7 is extremely good (used for music, games, high light display and it was up for 3 days) . What i'm interested in is a rom with a decent battery life (lets say at least half of CM7) ,great stability (i hate reboots, crashes etc) and the best gaming performance out there (as i said befoe, especially to be able to run Subway Surfers with no freezes).
I don't care if its 2.3.6 ,ICS or JellyBean as long as its stable, decent battery and best gaming performance.
Thanks in advance,i hope you guys can help me install the best gaming rom at the moment.

[Q] Gaming - WerewolfJB CM10.1 beta3

Hi all!
I love the work of laufersteppenwolf in making ROM for this smartphone, but it's not the aim of this post to say how much I appreciate his work.
I have a question.
Have anyone tested gaming in this (WerewolfJB CM10.1 beta3) ROM. How it looks? For example how it looks like with the games that used to lag a little: NFS:MW or Shadowgun, and how with those, which where almost unplayable because of the lags: i.e. Spiderman.
Are they running smooth?
Some are better, need for speed is smooth. Spiderman still laggy but not as bad. Some are worse though like nova 3, in benchmarks most stuff was higher but I/O speed is lower than stock which may explain why some are worse. I haven't tested today's new kernel though

Thanks for your response. Have anyone else tested it (w/wo new kernel)? And what about the classics like GTA III or VC?

Gaming on Atrix HD

Hi guys,
Since you already know our device is getting older and now it is being categorized among the lower-end handsets in the android community. Games on android have never been so much better. The visuals on some recent games are breathtaking. I know the device we own is not so much of a gaming one and continuous gaming can adversely eat up the battery life and heat up the phone so please don't bring this up in the discussion which will follow since everyone knows it.
I want this thread to be a gaming thread for AHD. I would like you people to discuss about some latest and graphic intensive games and their performance on our phone. I actually want to determine the real life performance and reach the upper limits of this phone. Stats and benchmarks are just numbers and real life performance can be different. I will comment on the games which I have played on my AHD and share my experience with them. I suggest you do the same. For best performance you should restart the phone before launching the game and never run any apps in the background.
The games which I have tried personally are(I'm listing all the graphics intensive games here not the ones which are like Candy Crush):
- Asphalt 8 ( A great fun racing game with some breathtaking visuals. Overall this game runs fine on AHD. Can sometimes lag a bit when running other apps in the background but overall the experience is lovely)
- Leo's Fortune ( One of the most top rated and liked games on mobile platform. The game runs without a hitch. Can sometimes stutter on levels where there is snowfall or rain but it can be tolerated. I just loved playing it on my phone)
- Dungeon Hunter ( A lovely RPG. It performed okayish when I started playing it but after few levels it just stuttered randomly at some points which I couldn't bear and so didn't play it further on the AHD)
- Plants vs Zombies 1 & 2 ( They both run great. Love playing them every now and then)
- Riptide GP 1 & 2 ( Awesome Jet ski racing games. The visuals are amazing for a game which acquires such a low space on your phone. Try them out)
- GT Racing 2 ( Runs fine for the most part. Performance can be compared to Asphalt 8)
- Real Racing 3 ( I played this game an year ago on my AHD and the performance was not so good. It is such a great game, probably the best racing game on a mobile platform right now but for me it stuttered every now and then due to which I didn't play it further on AHD. I recently asked a member here about RR3 performance in CM11 thread since he mentioned he was playing it. Maybe its gotten better I think I should try it out again)
I've played lots of other games as well but I think these are enough to get the thread going. Please share your experience as well.
- Modern Combat 5 on this phone makes it feel that its getting really old. GFX aren't great (pixilated with textures) and its laggy too, the problem was starting the game or hoping it doesnt crash while doing a very intense level. I ran this game in Blisspop 2.2 (very stable and quick btw) and was surprised that it ran that bad.
- Madden Ultimate Team Mobile (It was a huge problem to start the game even in stock it was a problem it would just freeze and reboot) Cm11 I had better luck it would crash when loading but would load the game when I was lucky enough. Playing the game was okay too, wasn't all impressed or that since its a sports game. I think the problem is when its getting alot of data from the internet for managing the ultimate team, it would just crash there. When using Cm12 and Blisspop (especially Blisspop) It loads more often than not and managing the team would still be an issue, but you must load it one step at a time and not all at once, good enough. Best tip is to restart this device and then just run it, before other apps try to run.
Mincecraft- It just runs the game as if the phone was in the mid range category and im fine with that. Cm12 and Blisspop run it much better thus a slightly better view distance seems fine before the device lags when you put the view distance higher. Cm11 and lower (including stock) just take it down a notch and it runs fine.
I could understand why its now in the lower part of the spectrum and is compared to the moto g of last year and the moto e of this year. (judging from benchmark rankings, just slight differential)
The newer devices will always have some type of edge because it processes things much better due to the chipset architecture, management, optimization etc....

MIUI Custom Kernel or MIUI Based Custom Roms

As the title says, my mix 2 lags and drops fps hard in heavy games like pubg, i tried game boost app from pocophone it helped a little bit and now it became useless. Phone doesnt get hot a lot, i try to play in smooth extreme fps but fps drops a lot, i think it is kernel related or due to miui. I have tried global stable and beta miui 10. It is just the only problem i have with the device. Are there any other kernel that is compatible with miui? Are there any good miui 10 based custom roms that performs good in games and gets better battery when on light use? I dont really want to change roms(aosp ones because i had 5t before and tried almost every single one. Im a guy who fell in love with miui since 2013-2014. Thats why i got mix 2 and i wasnt expecting that bad performance on the same snapdragon chipset. Like i have said its either rom or kernel issue.)
Im also open to suggestions. I have used several pubg graphics tools and the results i got are with those apps. It is even worse with default graphics options. Also i would change the kernel if possible with EAS as they perform better in balanced tasks.I own mix 2 for 3 days and im satisfied with it. But that performance issue really bugs me out. I could play the game at hdr with 60fps on my old 5t. It wouldnt get that hot. I can say the heat is the same i get with mix 2. Animation transitions are ok, i dont get any stuttering in any apps or in system, it happens with heavy games.
This thread can be a discussions thread of gaming in miui.
Miui kernel or other

You can use a different kernel (like skizo or placeholder) or swich to AOSP roms and try NFS-injector (optimized for PUBG only).
