is it possible?
Yes. But you need to make an app for that. The IR app can record the database but there's no UI to use it.
As the Siv also got IR-blaster I'd think quite a few IR-apps should pop-up pretty soon.

I hope so. Can't believe it's taken this long to bring IR back to hand held devices.
The remote app can learn. Add a new remote, teach it the AC remote codes and see what happens?
Pretty sure this year will see a whole bunch of competing IR blaster apps being released.

I had an iPaq with IR on it many years ago.
There's lots of fun to be had in airports, railway stations, even the cinema.
Anywhere there are banks of LCD displays, especially if they have crucial information on them.

Going back about 20 years, I had a Casio remote control watch. At the time this was a very new and novel concept. A couple of fun stories
1) I was in a shopping mall. There was a TV in the window. I was with my friend and I told him loudly "With my mind I am going to switch off this TV. Focus ....focus....". Then without being obvious, I pressed the button to switch off the TV. A woman was watching me and was so freaked out she went running away down the mall.
2) A hi-fi store had a big 50" (this was very big 20 years ago) front projection TV. They were playing the Lion King cartoon. It was about 11pm at night. I turned the sound up to max, and still couldn't hear much so I thought, oh well, nevermind. Walked about 20 seconds and then suddenly heard a loud lion "roooooaaaarrrr" coming from the shop. Needless to say, I just left it like that
The HTC One media app can learn new IR controls. You select device not in list, and then proceed to point your existing remote at the phone and tell it what each button you press does, and it learns them and can then push those controls out. I'm using it to control my Air Conditioning, TV, Satellite box, and even my projector at work, none of which are known devices, it had to learn them all. It's very clever and extremely easy to set up.

I managed to manually sync my school projector remotes. It's so amazing, but still the air con doesn't work.. :l
I'm getting the same too. Doesn't work for the temperature control either. I think this has to do with the fact that the remote transmits more than a simple "ON" command. It transmits the parameters like fan and temperature.
LED Strip?
Hey guys,
Did someone manage it to configurate the remote of a LED Light like this : http://www.amazon.de/LED-Streifen-C...etzteil/dp/B00795UGVM/ref=tag_stp_s2_edpp_url

Try this App. I have nearly the same stripe, i've teached the Power-Button and it works. Will upload the other keys in the next hew hours. Of course it is a bit tricky, because you can't enter a name for the key, and there are just a few predifined ones which are logical. But "power" should be clear, and the rest is try&error.
You can find my commands at:
vendor: "in-akustik LED"
model: "A-Art LED RGB"
type: "Air Conditioning"
Maybe they will work for you.

There's a gallery of NC teardown pics at zdnet. XDA isn't letting me post the link because i'm not verified, so maybe someone else can.

From the pictures I see a good possibility for a bigger battery, or even adding a second one. Lots of room, it won't be pretty but something could be fashioned to fit.

Looks good.
Nice to see some more details about the NC coming out, I have yet to find a *detailed* list of the real hardware specs though.. most of the "tech specs" list mention supported ebook formats...
I ordered one of these the other day via a relative in the US and hopefully will be getting it next week some time.
I will miss the haptic feedback though so am wondering if it will be possible to replace the useless mono speaker with a motor from a mobile phone or something..

Cool idea. But it'll only work for typing and maybe apps that have clicking sounds. Still, it should work just fine. Of course you'd have to attach it to the inside real tight. Duck tape won't do

Thanks, my mind is kinda running over with ideas actually
From the teardown pics the internals seem pretty basic and there is hopefully a good bit of space. I would love to know if there are any available usb / jtag / etc headers available though.
If not I was thinking also about the possibility of modifying the usb connector with a switch and a usb 3g dongle inside, I just don't know if there is a 3g dongle that is not based on mini pcie though.
As for the haptic feedback I guess you can just assign a "sound" to everything that should produce feedback.
What about the accellerometer, is that sufficient to control cars in steering wheel based games?
/mrintegrity

The usb dongle would have to support android. To my knowledge there isn't one... but physically it is possible to stick it inside. They aren't that big, just look big cause of the plastic casing.
I think realistically, for now a bigger battery should be the first thing attempted, given the OS limitations we'd face with other mods. It would also allow us to run the NC at 800 mhz at all times via setcpu.

Did you download from the Gameloft site? I couldnt get the version from my G2 to get past the license check, and the only other version I've tried is a pirated 3.13 version. I would be glad to pay for it if I knew it would work.
Tried disabling the compatibility mode and the top of the screen is blank and I have to press high to get selections to work.
EDIT: I figured it out. You have to load a version made for Samsung Galaxy Tab or Galaxy S. I downloaded a version from Gameloft.com with Galaxy Tab selected as my phone and the game displays fine. If you purchase from their website you have to do some trickery. When they text you a download link, just type the link address from your phone in a browser on the Nook Color and the download should start and install the game.
isolated_epidemic - I'm having the same issue as you with Asphalt, as well as some of the other GameLoft games. Does anyone have a solution for this?

I don't think it is a small feature. That means that with the Right soft (understand app) you can virtually have the equivalent to a harmony universal remote control to master all your IR devices such as TV bluray home theater. I have an harmony and its awesome. Getting old though.

Already tested it and it works fine.
For most devices there are preconfigired setups. If your device is not listed, you can "teach" the phone by holding original remote to the power button and by pressing any button on remote.
Sadly the set of buttons is limited (only most common buttons available)

Have to say i'm quite impressed with it, i thought it was just a bit gimmicky but after trying it out it's quite good.
My 8 year old son was very impressed with it...."woah mum, dad's phone can turn the TV over!"......the wife wasn't impressed at all
Can't wait to get back to work in a few weeks and start p***ing the lads in the canteen off by turning the TV over!
Great thing is, that SGS4 also have IR sensor.
So we can expect some nice apps in near future and another devices with such functionality.
Back to the roots, earlier each phone had IR (ok not same like now)
Oh my. This feature is epic.
For Virgin Media users dont select your cable box as Tivo, it doesn't work select Virgin Media in the option.
Its Epic. EPIC EPIC.
I can't get it to work with my Sharp tv. The auto setup fails and when I try to get it to learn from my existing remote it will learn some buttons but not others. So I can mute the tv, but not unmute it. None of the numbers work, but the volume controls do.

I gave up. On the remote and the WD remote.
One day, there will be some unified remote I hope.
IR apps are thin on the ground because Bluetooth pretty much destroyed the need for the blasters (still chuckle thinking back to eldest daughter sitting 2 phones an inch apart then holding her breath though the numerous attempts to share an MP3.)
HTC have brought the blaster back in a way it was really meant to be used, developers will start coding for it (especially as Sammy had to copy them to stay in the game. )

It's probably proprietary but if someone could make an app that pulls in your Logitech Harmony remote info that would be awesome. I know there is one on the Play Store from Harmony, but it requires a separate device (which we don't need since the IR blaster is built in).

Can someone explain to me why I would want to ROOT my Chromecast units? I have two of them that I just bought today. I'm about to get the Moto Nexus 6 too when AT&T figures there crap out. Just wondering if ROOT'ing my CC's will be of any benifit?
Really all I'm going to do it cast Youtube and Plex from my phone so maybe this doesn't apply to me. I've already put both of my two new CC's online but for $35.00 dollars IF it offers me anything, I can buy more.
Thanks!
Because the only way to use an app on it is by registering with Google. Until you give Google money, you cannot develop or test anything.
Fun fact.

The majority of users will never need root.....
Custom Whitelisting - You might be able to get some features before Google officially supports them (Screen Casting is one example of something you could get while rooted before Google officially supported it) By the same token because Rooted users are for a short time behind Google on the latest version (as they get released) you might have to wait for some new features until Team Eureka makes their version of the update.
Custom DNS But the most notable reason for wanting Root is the ability to set custom DNS so you can get around regional restrictions on content.
ie Living in the UK but wanting to watch content from USA Netflix.
But if all you plan to do is Netflix and Plex there probably is no compelling reason to be rooted....
At least this week...Who knows what Next week brings! LOL
Thanks for the explanation guys! Sounds like I do not need ROOT at this point then.
I honestly would have probably not bought these Chromecasts but we ordered something like 450 of them at work and put them into all of our classrooms and since I'll be supporting them officially, I thought I should buy one. This thing is so bad ass, I went back for a second CC unit the same day. They work SO well. Much nicer than the Apple TV's we had in our classrooms. I like how these are not limited to what is on them so much and basically there is a way to cast anything to them in one or another.
Wish had gotten these earlier! Between these using Netflix and Plex Media Server with my collection of movies from the past 10 years, I might just shut off the Cable TV. The ONLY thing I ever use the Cable TV for is watching Pawn Stars on Demand. I have 130Mbps internet cable link, what do I need Cable TV for honestly!
Thanks again!

We're OT, but Wargames. The one with Matthew Broderick, not the sequel (though I did enjoy that as well). Watch it. Acoustic coupler. Covox Speech Thing. No fancy graphics. No Matrix tap-tap-tap-I'm in! Yup, that was life.
Back OT... Wargames, that's why you want root. Why? Because you're curious. Because you can. Because it's way cheaper than destroying a $400 piece of equipment because you wanted to see if you could ____. Because you want to cast Wargames to your TV that has nearly 3 times the resolution of our old tube TVs...

I remember some of those stories when I was younger, when I would ***** about the 56K modem, and making sure my dad was off the phone before Doom deathmatches.... Why his network engineering degree and Linux involvement didn't turn into a fascination with all things Android, I'll never know.
We had a dedicated line for dialup internet. No inbound calls on it. The computer was set to a 1 minute delay for when the provider booted our connection. Each month was billed at a minimum of 400 connected hours. I managed to hit 700 connected hours once.
I am also curious if I should root or not... everything revolving around my phones need root to do everything I prefer and would just root this.... except I don't have the hardware needed to root it..... so would have to buy the hardware and have no other use for the hardware except to root this.... I live in the US so don't need to try and get around region locks... As far goes functionality and apps... do I gain anything except a custom white list and a little more control over my device? Specifically I wonder about apps... I know in the rooted world some apps are just not possible without it.... so don't want to get stuck missing out on great apps. I know there have been threads about this in the past but I am interested in an updated answer since the environment is constantly changing.
Wow, So Im Not Sure if anyone else has stumbled upon this yet but if you have a gamepad paired while in the 1st 2 theater options, you can change your seat by pressing button 3 on the gamepad! in the first theater u can switch to any of the 6 seats, while the 2nd theater only allows from front, middle and rear, ENJOY! GUYS!!

Y button in Moga Pro Power is what you use to toggle your seat.

Somewhat changing the perspective and distance of the viewer.

You don't get stuck next to the guy checking his Twitter during the movie.

Same benefit as you'd get in a real theater. Some folks want to sit down front and some in back.

They really should add a similar feature to void cinema as I want to be closer to the screen, but without having to strain my neck.

Ugh. I doubt moving away would be enough. Seems the type that would follow you around still rambling. My luck, I would have to leave for dumping my soda on "a paying customer"
i too hope they implement this
1. to be accessible even without controller (i.e. swipe up/down could be used) and
2. to be accessible in the void as well, so that every person can choose for himself how big he wants the screen to be. i do like the void, but it kind of bothers me that the screen is smaller than in the main cinema. sure it makes sense to not have the picture "attack" you too much, but on the other hand, theres movies that attempt to do just that, i.e. gravity.
so, this should be an easily accessible user setting in all theatres including the void, IMO. for some movies, id like to sit in the back of a cinema with some distance, i.e. TV series that generally tend to do more closeup than movies do. for others, i might want to watch them silly close in the void so that they almost fill up the entire FOV, maybe even a bit more than the cinema default does (that would be gravity )
So is this not achievable with just the touch pad? :/
EDIT: Just bought a controller, and it's much much better than swiping with the touchpad. Tried this in the cinema app and it works perfectly. I prefer the very back seat because I can see the whole screen without left or right.
Me and the wife want to get one, I think it's sad you can't join two and sit in the same virtual cinema... maybe in a future update.

Get them anyway! You can sit together on a couch and start the movie at the exact time and enjoy the show!!! Don't forget to hold hands and share a bowl of popcorn and pretend you are ghosts sitting on an empty movie theater :silly:

Why do you think Facebook bought Occ Rift? I can see voice coms mapped over the top so that you can sit around with your mates regardless of where they are, watching the same movie and pause and chat if you want to. Kinda cool.
