[Q] Rom Upgrade Required Help with some Issues on Lots of Minds - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
Being an SGS user willing to upgrade to jellybean, while roaming around a lots of posts getting a lot of answers i have got a few questions unanswered.
So any help regarding these questions will be much appreciated keeping in mind that i moved to android a few weeks ago. My SGS was rooted, it had clockwork mod recovery installed and it was already on
"Dynamic ICS"
Firmware version:4.0.4
Baseband version:I9000XDJV1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJW5-CL1045879 Semaphore_2.7.4.
1.when i will flash a custom rom using CWM recovery do i need to remove the sim card or let it inside the SGS?
2.if i flash the latest Mackay rom 2.8.8 JB4.2, will it cause any issues while moving to c-rom mix or slim bean roms?
3.i heard there is no radio support in JB roms but my current ICS rom have a FM radio app version 2.3.6, if i back it up using titanium backup can i restore it in mackay rom or c-rom versions?
4.is there a difference style of partitions for mackay roms as compared to c-rom?
5.do i need a nandroid backup before flashing another rom?
6. if something goes wrong while flashing can a nandroid backup be restored via CWM recovery or the recovery setup is also lost in case device is bricked?
7. what is a logcat and how its used or created?
these are a few issues in my mind which i cant get clear help about on various forums and posts i know i ll be redirected to a lot of posts as a reply but if any1 can shortly and precisely guide me i ll be grateful.

[Q] Custom Roms' compatibility with firmware and Kernels

Just a few quick questions please.
a) Will there be any problems installing a rom which isnt created for the firmware? Example if Im on 2.3.5 and I installed a Rom which is made for 2.3.6, will there be any issues?
b) I understand that most roms comes with its own kernels, so if Im installing a Rom which has a KKA kernel and my phone is on a KJ4, do I need to install a KKA kernel 1st before installing the rom?
thanks
1) Always, on any phone, when you want to install a ROM with different basement than yours, needed full wipe before.
2) never instal a kernel before ROM.First the ROM, after the kernel.all kernel threads in op, you can see if its compatible with your rom filmware version.

Sorry for the bump but I need little explanation on both of these questions though I have Galaxy SII. I think I don't need to make any other thread asking same questions.
Thanks.
I make sure I do a full wipe every time I flash a different ROM.
This is not the case for ROM updates. I only full wipe when the update tutorials says I need to.
And as said before, make sure you flash the ROM first THEN the kernel.
In the case of the G-Note, both AbyssNote and FM kernels are compatible with CF-Root custom kernel.
Hmm.. then is there anyway to backup your stock ROM without root OR you have to first root the device, back it up and then flash another ROM?
Yes, you can backup the stock ROM after rooting the device and installing CWM.

[Q] Need help, noob friendly

Hello.
I got a dutch Galaxy Note, with 3.0.15 Speedmodkernel, CWM. android version 4.0.3 build nr im74k. Xxlpy
Now my question is, how do i flash a custom rom, and what rom do you guys recommend? I heard jellybean is a nice rom? I really want to get the best experience out of my Galaxy Note.
Sorry if im not being very clear, i quite new to this..
For flash rom you can use guide from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801686 but I suggest you still stay in custom ICS rom because JB rom still not stable yet. If you really want to try JB rom i suggest you using BlackCNA because SMemo app still working but before flash read the issues they posted and decide weather want to use it or not. For ICS i suggest using "Crash ROM" which is the rom I using now pretty cool and stable. One more thing, I suggest you using hydracore kernel before flash rom it suitable for all types rom and safe for full wipes on all types rom .
BlackCNA - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1883877
Crash Rom - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1723757
Hydracore - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28245219
backup efs first and save across different locations, then do readings above

Hi,
If you try to use CM 10/9 ROMs you will suffer from lags and battery drain due to following limitations of our ACE:
Less Ram (Min 512 MB req. for smooth performance with user apps installation)
Less power processor (its ARM5-787MHz only while ICS and JB need modern processors for smooth performance with user apps )
Limited battery (Only 1350MAh while ICS and JB need 1700-2000 MAh power house for a day long backup..while it also depends on user usage)
Thus, I will suggest you to flash CWM recovery 5.0.26 and then flash any CM 7.2 ROM / CUstom Stock ROMs of your choice.
Some best ROMs are :
Apo-K-lypse (new one :Genius version) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2444500
Ultimatum V 3.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2234221
You will get best performance, features and battery life with these ROMs.. much better than CM9/10 ROMs for our ACE.
All the best and comment again if you need any further help
Before flashing a ROM you must flash ClockWorkMod recovery. Once you installed CWM you must boot in recovery and then do the followings step:
1) wipe data/cache
2) advanced -> wipe dalvik cache
3) install zip from SD card
4) choose the zip and confirm
5) reboot
For the most stable cm10.1 I suggest you Cm10.1 by Maclaw or the last CM10.1 by androidarmv6 team.
My favourite is the second one !
These are pure CyanogenMod ROMs with no moddings. I don't like modded ROMs.

Precautions before installing custom ROMs?

Hi guys, I am new to this Forum.. I wanted to root my GT-N7000. So i searched the forums and i followed the guide of Dr.ketan and used the recommended method ( 1A - Flashing safe kernal with CWM recovery with touch 5 ). Had a bootloop on second restart, ( did reset and rooted the phone using the 1B method flashing SuperSU and Busybox ) Nevertheless successfully rooted my phone.
Now i wanna try Custom ROMs..Is there any precautions to be considered other than Nandroid backup?.. Also i have only a 2GB memory card.. Would it be enough to make Nandroid Backup?..
I also read by Installing Custom ROMs, we will lose Stock apps ( Since apps like S Note need some TW kernal ).. Is there anyway to Port or install or Mod available to install stock apps like SNote and Splanner in Custom ROMs?..
Finally, will the SPen work with Custom ROMs??.. I mean will the Custom ROMs for Note will have the Kernals Inbuilt for SPen or we have to install the Kernals required?..
Thanks a lot for viewing this thread and Thanks in Advance for your replies
PS:- Please excuse me, if the above questions have been asked before, cuz i searched for it and couldn't find it or they were complicated for a noob like me!
For flashing custom roms you will first need a custom kernel with cwm and safe to flash from.
It depends on the ROM you want to flash.
Don't worry about the sd card size, you can make backups to internal sd also.
Custom rom based on touchwiz do come with the apps you mentioned. But if you are going to try AOSP&CM roms them they won't work as they need tw framework.
Kernels not required for spen. Framework. Roms based on Samsung firmware support spen but AOSP&CM roms will not. As a stylus it does work though. Not like popus you get on Samsung roms.

I had already flashed Philz safe kernal with CWM.. So I dont need to flash kernals if the Custom ROMs are based on CWM right?.. and for the Spen to work, i just have to find Custom ROMs based on samsung firmware support? or Custom ROMs based on TW?..
Thanks for your help
If you have flashed philz kernel then you should be good to flash most of the roms except 4.4 as they need newer version of cwm. Eg raw kernel.

Thanks a lot.. I have one more question ( pls bare with me )..
If for eg.. i wanna download this SuperBean v1.5 XXLT6.. The last 5 letters, what exactly are they?.. My mobile Build No ends with:- DDLSC and my Baseband version ends with :- DDLS6...
Does this last 5 letters of Superbean ( XXLT6 ) have anything to do with my Build No or Baseband version?.. When i downloaded the Philz touch 5 CMW recovery with safe kernels i Noticed, he had seperate files for seperate Build Nos..
So do i have to check the Custom ROMs for my Build Nos or is it only for kernels and CMW?..
Thanks for your help
Those are roms build for different regions. You can flash any build number. It's up to the developers on which rom version is his ROM based upon.

Thanks a lot man
One more thing to do before installing a custom rom is to BACKUP YOUR EFS FOLDER.
Or do not do it and your phone could end as a small tablet/big mp3 player.
Unlikely, but i bought one with damaged EFS folder last week to replace my screen. It does happen.

If you are rooted then just flash ultimatum ROM .zip file
It has AROMA installer and it will ask you which kernel to install.
If you want to flash kernel separately then you can find the files on Ultimatum ROM page itself.
Glad you replied me bro
Thanks alot for the reply..
Sir
While Flashing Kernels, Should i look into BaseBand or Something related to it. I have DDKQ8. Well this ROM supports this ? How to check that
For installing CM 10.1 or 11, Latest CWM version i required. So for installing CM 7.2 Is CWM 5.2.0.6 is enough ? or i need to upgrade ?
Waiting for ur Helping Hands..

If you are running a Stock rom, root your device and flash CWM5 and then you'll be able to upgrade your firmware
With CWM5 (Stock rom e.g.) you can flash directly CM10.x and viceversa, so:
CMW5.x >>> Stock Roms/CM7.x/CM9./CM10.x
CMW6.x >>> CM11/Omni/Android 4.4.x
