[Q] Please help- Screen TOO bright even at lowest setting! :( any remedy?

Hello everyone
I just got the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S yesterday and my worst nightmare has come true. I have sensitive eyes and keep brightness on all my equipment at the lowest level. I had asked someone before buying this phone and he told that it is manageable but now I find out that the screen is way toooo bright even at the lowest setting!
It strains the eyes + drains the battery.
Suppose we are not connected to internet through any source. Then if we refresh any widget we get the error "Please check your network access" and the screen goes dull in background. Now thats the perfect setting I would like for the phone.
Any idea how we can reduce the brightness even further through Mod or through factory settings or somehow?
I would really appreciate any help on this one.

Try fiddling with your phone in the morning, just as you've woken up. It works as a nice wake upper though. .

Android default min brightness is 8% (even though it reads 0%).
Two apps that give you less than 8%, both goes to 0% :
- Brightness Level by CurveFish
- Dimmer (Night Mode) by geekyouup
Also, look into changing your background color to black, it'll save you battery and be easier on your eyes. Lastly, the browser has its own brightness setting, found by hitting menu > settings.
Alternatively, only use under direct sunlight.

Thanks. I would try the dimmer and see if 0% helps somewhat though I have read that its only marginally better.
I am hoping that there should be a way to reduce it somehow since it gets reduced when we see some error just like I mentioned in 1st post.

I agree even at the lowest level its way to bright.
I have the curvefish brightness app, but even set to 0 its too bright for use in the darkness.

I've actually written that it's only a marginal improvement, but I omitted that opinion here since I think my opinion is less applicable to someone with sensitive eyes. You might perceive a 3x decrease than what I did, not sure if that'd still be enough.
Again, I think changing to a dark background will get you more mileage, if you haven't already done so.

Currently I am using a relatively black background but when surfing most webpages have white background and that really is painful! I guess I may have to look for some tinted screen protector!

i know this may sound strange, but If I wear my sunglasses at night while browsing it works quite well

You can also use tasker for lower brightness levels..

I am currently using "Dimmer". It takes the brightness levels from 30% (Though in settings it show minimum only) to 10%. I have also tried "Quick settings" so I guess tasker would perform the same function.
When we have locked our screen and we have to unlock we have to slide the screen. When we do that it seems like we have to slide a transparent layer of glass which is quite dark.
Now I am no developer but is it technically possible to create an app which is like a layer of tinted glass on screen so that it dims the screen further?

I haven't tried the dimmer apps yet but I DO agree that I miss my iPhone which can be set to a much lower brightness level for better privacy, night vision, "before sleep reading".

At first even I thought that and I was worried about that. But there are some times for example when you get some error on the screen the major part of screen goes quite dull so it is indeed possible to do that technically I guess just that it cant be done through brightness.
I am baffled why did the Samsung/Android guys set lower level of brightness as option also. It would have cost them nothing and would have saved us a lot of strain and battery life.
PS: Is this the issue with Android or Samsung?

To someone with a bit more knowledge: how hard would this be to do something about? We all know the screen dims to a level that's not for the moment available to manually set some time before it shuts off, so it's got to be a way.
The screen is just too bright for me at the lowest setting - meaning it hurts me eyes (some pity here Samsung) and consuming a lot more battery than it needs to.

got me new galaxy s for a couple of weeks now.. but really miss my old htc hd... the minimum backlight setting was awesome for nighttime reading/browsing.
switching on the sammy in bed in the week hours of the night makes my eyes burn! hehe.
an app to force lower or add a filter over the entire screen would be awesome!

samsung galaxy s has a SUPER AMOLED display which is why its bright even at lowest level.

Well I dont know for sure. The device has been working same since the 1st day. I guess its just that the brightness is too much for me. As far as the screen is concerned I didnt notice anything significant but any easy way to check about the problem?

flickering screen of NC

I played with my NC nearly one week and I like it. But I want to know dose anyone notice the screen of NC is flickering. If you couldn't understand what I mean, please refer to below video,

it is not so obvious in real world as in video, but it is noticeable and uncomfortable. I have ipad with IPS LCD but never find this kind of issue. It like some kind of low fresh rate issue in early PC screen, so I want to know whether it is possible to fix it via adjust screen refresh rate in OS level.

Mine does that but only on the gray background, otherwise I don't see any flickering.

I exchanged my first NC because of this issue. The salespeople thought I was nuts until I demonstrated it for them. My new one still does it but MUCH more faintly and not all the time. I do believe that Barnes & Noble is aware of it (or at least that's something I read in another thread here somewhere..).
It seems to only happen at middling levels of brightness. My first NC exhibited the issue under very specific settings and times, the brightness had to be set between 20%-40% and I had to be displaying a solid area of mid-range colors. I saw it all the time when the screen would dim to display a menu.
From personal experience, you MIGHT be able to get a unit that's better if you exchange. It does seem to be a very common issue, though. Rumor has it that it might be fixable through a firmware update.. we shall see.

I had a pocket pc with this problem many moons ago...The fix was to adjust a trim pot on the display...
No idea if anything like that would apply here, but just wanted to mention it.

Are you planning on rooting or installing another ROM on your Nook? The overclock kernels fix this issue.

from what I see there in the video, if that is what you are seeing...not refresh rate. Rather it looks like a cycling in the backligt control. Almost looks like the PWM duty cycle is out of wack...would explain why it happens at mid range of the brightness.

My first nook color had this problem, I solved it by leaving the brightness up all the time which seemed to prevent it. I got it replaced for other display issues, and my new one doesn't flicker at any brightness, so yeah it sounds like a defect.

Not a defect. It's a problem with stupid coding in the backlight driver.
They set the PWM (pulse width modulation) rate too low, at 40Hz if I remember right. It's easy to fix by setting it up to 60Hz in the driver, which I did in my old Quickie kernel. Totally gets rid of the flicker, and I've seen no side-effects, nor have any been reported to me.
I don't have the time to keep up with the kernel anymore, and for some reason no other kernel dev has pulled my driver fix into theirs. You might talk to Dalingrin or one of the other devs if you really want it, and put them in contact with me at [email protected] and I can help them get it integrated into their kernel.

Hmmmm.... my Nook definitely had the flicker issue on most gray colors, especially at dimmer brightness settings. I'm not using your kernel, but I am using Dalingrin's. I haven't seen flicker in months. Could this issue be limited to the stock ROM only?

It appears that way from my experience. I was running the dual boot package with stock and CM7 nightly.
The stock rom flickered very noticeably on greyish type backgrounds. Using CM7 and now Phiremod, the flickering has totally gone away.

Actually the fix is already in init.encore.rc:

Does anyone else have this issue? Every time you lock/unlock the brightness auto adjusts again (and it adjusts pretty low)
So even if I manually set it to 100% and lock/unlock it will be down to 25% again. Doesn't seem like it's learning at all

Seems like it takes a lot of time to learn. I don't use it anyway I prefer having control on it

Seems like a bug honestly, because it goes TOO LOW. I tried to lock the device several times to see if the "learning" of the slider improves, but it still goes back to the same spot... I'm gonna keep it deactivated until they fix it.

Android Pie has AI in basically everything and it learns for you, just keep adjusting the brightness manually and in a few days it'll know how you like your brightness and adjust it for you.

I care about to go low! And now I can't go below 19% with Adaptive ON, it's to high for a dark room.

Actually I've been reading similar things about this on the pixel so it might just be the way it is. Might take long for it to learn. I read someone say it's always fun when he first unlocks it

Yeah it could be the new implementation of the AI, I'm gonna use it for a few days to see if it gets better

This has started happening to me since yesterday. I've been using Pie for a month now (December update). What I've noticed is that it goes down to about 25% every time I cover the brightness sensor with my finger (usually when watching YT) and it stays there no matter what. It's pretty annoying having to always adjust it like that. Using "Sensors Monitor" app I see that the sensor is working correctly so it's a software "feature".
Any suggestions on how to mitigate it besides using "Velis Auto Brightness" app?

How do we know its 'AI'? Has it 'adapted' for anyone till now? That brings us tk the question, what was wrong with Auto Brightness in Oreo? Just because there's piece of code that's new, doesn't mean its versatile.

display brightness

Just received a used device and noticed my unit won't physically lower in brightness at around 25 percent. What I mean is that at around the 25 percent mark, I am unable to perceive it getting any lower when set at a lower percentage. I've also noticed that when I have the brightness at a high percentage and then quickly lower it to the minimum, that the display will at first be quite dim then will suddenly raise itself to a slightly brighter minimum. I do not have auto brightness on, nor any filter apps active while testing. Just wondering if this issue is isolated to my device. Thank you for reading my concern. If anything is unclear, I could try taking a video of the issues. Anyone else with these issues? I've searched the web to no avail.

i just bought a used device as well and mine has the same issues. the backlight seems to flicker on the second screen at low brightness and below about half the second screen is noticably dimmer. its unfortunate that they didn't put a lot of effort into the screen software or quality considering its the main gimmick of this phone, but it is made by ZTE after all. the price you probably paid for one of these things is a lot more representative of the quality than the original MSRP. But its still a fun gimmick even with all the flaws.

Thanks for your thoughts and input. Yeah this is quite unfortunate on how the phone turned out. I also see the flicker on the second display. But as you mentioned, the device is indeed quite fun. I'm actually thoroughly enjoying the device especially with books and comics reading in the extended mode. I tend to do some late night reading, so that was the reason why I brought up the display issue as I had wanted to get the display as dim as possible before applying a filter. Hopefully one day we'll get root to check out if we can lower the display minimum brightness level along with other lower level system modifications.

apparently a few weeks ago someone released TWRP for this device. its not quite a root but it still gives you root access to change the build.prop and some low level system settings. TWRP is the sign that there is some kind of development happening but i wouldn't hedge your bets on anybody fixing the screen issues even with some kind of kernel modification

That is definitely a most welcome update. I'm curious on what build your device is on since you mentioned having similar issues to mine. I am on b30 myself and will be flashing to b37 when I get a chance to see if there are any differences.

Question AMOLED Display Overheated; Permanent Damage

Have been loving this phone since I got it early this year, around Feb, apart from the battery life.
Unfortunately, recently the display has been cooked (literally) after the phone was overheated while gaming. I'm not sure what happened exactly, but at low brightness settings there is now a very noticeable greenish gradient on the display, more intense closer to where the phone got hotter. There is also an odd black line down the centre of the screen that is only visible on certain parts of the lock screen (notification banners). There is also some noticeable graininess to the screen as well now. Seems fine when brightness is increased.
Has anyone else experienced an issue like this? Unfortunately I will probably be looking to replace the phone soon, as this has made it very frustrating to use in low-light, and I'm not sure whether the severity will increase over time. I doubt there is any fix other than replacing the display unit. Any overheating has probably shortened the already poor battery life as well, unfortunately.
I did try to get an image, but sadly the effects are not very obvious in a photograph.

Make sure you are on the latest firmware and that you are not using the 90Hz refresh rate, it is known to have weird colours/a green tint. Other than that, maybe it did in fact overheat and get damaged, but I think it is unlikely at the temperatures a phone can get to, so probably a defect screen. If you can get it checked by Asus they might replace it

I haven't had the issue prior to the overheating. Phone is always on 60Hz because the battery life is even worse otherwise, so definitely not that.
In fiddling around it looks like the issue only happens when DC dimming is enabled though. Sadly having it off makes the display look like an LCD for anything except pure black, where the pixels turn off.
Unfortunately I probably couldn't get it repaired by Asus (without a fee anyway), as I have the bootloader unlocked and root access, and the unlocker reports the serial # to Asus. I live in Australia and we haven't had right to repair enforced like America has.
I am on latest Android 12 firmware.
