HTC ONE Radio Signal - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking for another Android after my Nexus 4 failed me... I've had enough of the poor network connectivity issues (non-network related, I have ATT and other phones on the same plan/network around me connect fine, that sometimes I have to use their phone because mine can't--how lame). I'm trying to find information on HTC radio signal strength. I haven't found any sources regarding testing the radio. Can anyone point me to the right places?

Your best bet is to wait for the review from anandtech as I am sure he goes into quite some length about signal quality which should hopefully help you to make a decision, the mini review is up so hopefully the full review won't be too far behind.
Are you looking at getting the international version or the USA variant? As someone from the USA got the international one and was/is having issues with the signal hopping between 3G and HSPA all the time (see below thread)

Diamond and low 3G Signal

I own a Diamond since yesterday and have noticed having problems with 3G carriers (specifically H3G Italy) searching on the net I've seen that many people from different countries have the same problem. I think that the problem should be the radio rom shipped with the diamond. Actually I tested 1.00.25.03/05/06 all with poor signal or loss of signal or roaming.
I adviced HTC of the problem (saying that 3G signal is very poor) indicating the os rom and the radio rom.
Everyone that has the same problem should notify HTC on this form http://www.htc.com/europe/CS_Mail.aspx
so, perhaps, can begin working on it.

SEARCH Junior!!!
Agree with this 3G signal dows not improve on all Radio ROMs
I can confirm this.
I had a TytnII before I got the Diamond, and I tested them for a week against each-other.
The TytnII had 3G coverage about everywhere I live, but only 3-4 bars.
The Diamond mostly have 1 to nothing...

Hi Sergio,
what do you mean? Should I search the signal or should I search somewhere else here on the forum? I didn't find nothing but I'll give another look.
Any hints?
Hopefully the .16 rom will improove things a bit. I really hope that its a rom issue and not a hardware issue.

Do you know when it will be released?
There is a rom in the raphael forum with it but its the whole rom and not just the radio. I've emailed HTC - doubt ill get a responce. I'm suprised there isn't greater interest in this problem.
Incidently i think the .11 radio gave me slightly better 3g reception.

Thanks, hope so either.
I have sent htc an email, I got an automated reply saying that somone would look in to it soon. We shall see.
ohh, you all have send a mail,
i have also send a mail, since the end of June, i think 4 emails and nothing happens,

It looks to me that HTC has rushed the release of this phone before they properly tested it (most likely to coincide with the release of 3G iPhone). They are using us, their customers, to test it for them.
The 3G reception here in Australia is very bad (never above 2 bars) and it constantly switches over to GSM, which in some cases causing for a call to be dropped. Pathetic.

Hi broncos nice to see you I think tomorrow I will call HTC by phone
i wondering if there is a Serie of devices which have those problems ,
2 of my collegues have also a diamond , in the same room with the same Provider , i have NO or 1bar when they have full ??
Now i tried alot of ROM's and i came to the conclusion to send the Device to HTC, so i have to flash back to SSPL ...
1st HTC and no luck ...
The same problem in Spain with the carrier "Yoigo". I have already sent the appropriate message to HTC.
I have send email past week but I don't have answer.
I think it's a big big problem!!!. What HTC doing to solve it?
it does nothing???!!!
Hi guys
3G is not everywhere yet even here at my place it often goes down depending on where I am.
But when I have this problem and look at my friends Iphone he has the same problem. So I wonder if this is a diamond\Iphone or a provider problem?
Grtzzzz
it's 3 years that i use only 3G phones and only with diamond i have this problem (i read also iphone has the same problem)
but it is sure that the problem is of the diamond (and iphone) because all the other phone dont' have problem (also 3Gphones pay 20/30euros have no problem!!!)
I just hope that its a software problem rasther than a hardware fault.

[Q] 3G Fluctuating issues?

My captivate is always fluctuating between the edge and 3g network. My iPhone never had these fluctuating issues like this phone and ive tested both in the same area's. Is there an explanation or possible fix to have a stronger signal while on AT&T's 3g network?
Short answer, no.
If before you had a solid 3G connection in the area you're having trouble with now, then chances are it will return. Data connections are typically like that and although it may have something to do with the Captivate itself, there's nothing you can do there either. As far as I know, there haven't been any major connection issues with the Captivate. Nothing like Antennagate (The iPhone 4 hassle), at least. AT&T will release updated software and radios in the future, these typically come with better connections. Best recommendation I can give you would be to buy a Wi-Fi router, if you can.

Thanks for the info I already talked to AT&T and they said it should be replaced. So i contacted Amazon wireless, who i upgraded through and they are sending out a new one. I hope this fixes the issue cause this phone is sweet and setting everything up all over again always sucks. Thanks again

Sprint website coverage map showed solid 4G LTE coverage

But my HTC ONE has no 4G at all, and I checked the whole area, not just one spot. I tried update my profile(No idea what's that for) and PRL, and nothing helps at all. Also, after update profile, I actually got stuck, lost cell connection for all. But that's a separated issue I'll say. I guess it should be that Sprint faked their coverage( I turned on my ATT phone with Tmobile sim, solid 4G LTE) just to get subscribers, and I'm pretty upset that with all the seemingly good news about Sprint, the real steps are so small, compare to other 4 carriers.
Do you think the phone itself is on the fault? I'm in the Irvine CA area, might be part of the Santa Ana market they are talking about just went online with 4G, which is just not true.

OC in general is pretty spotty whenever I go there, but that could be the One's weak radio. Either way check out this map.

Get close to a known 4g tower (within a few blocks,) check s4gru.com if you don't know where any are. If you still don't get any, there is something wrong with your phone. Sprint 4G on 1900Mhz is pretty fragile and the One drops it pretty easily, unfortunately the S4 actually is better in this regard.

Is it the metal casing that makes the htc one signal not as good as say the s4's? And if so, can a mod be done to help the antenna get better reception?

No idea really, my buddy at work picks up 4g on his S4 several blocks away from where I can in several locations. I'm actually going to flash another radio to see if it helps. May be worth a shot for you too.

The Sprint Coverage Map is an approximation. However, I will agree that a lot of the information is not specifically accurate. For example, the map has shown 4G LTE for my town for over 3 months now. Realistically, I've only been picking up LTE for less then a month now. I don't know what criteria they base the coverage map on (or their underlying intentions) but I have always considered it "somewhat accurate."
The HTC One doesn't help itself either. My wife's Note2 picks up solid LTE in our house; whereas my One can barely hold a 3G reception sitting next to her.

followed the link, interestingly, saw the coverage all along the road, I think it should be one or two person with the app driving through and sent back the signal strength. The real coverage should be wider, cause I don't know any antenna will transmit such a pattern
They have technician that have receivers in their vehicles and as they drive around doing work they collect the signal data.

Sprint really just needs to work on their coverage, they told my mates and I that they would have lte over here by the end of LAST April... nothing. We have 4g signal here, I know this because my old htc evo picked up 4g signals at home, but now that i'm using the one, it has no backwards compatibility with 4g and can only use 4glte, so the unlimited data im paying for is pointless because when i'm home I use wifi since its faster than the 3g i'm picking up (obviously). Really considering the switch to T-mobile when my contract is up.

Well, as demo27vol1 posted the s4gru link, there should be 4G coverage on many parts of the place I am at, that site should be from crowd source, not Sprint. What I found is, if I look at the s4gru's coverage very carefully, I can find one place with much stronger signal, where my phone can get 4G, (I'm not driving around with that map and my phone to try to map the coverage myself, I just went to that place and saw 4G and come back to verify with others' report and found it's relevant.) So I do think the phone is at fault now, means it has some problem with the 4G that it can't get the signal if it's weaker. I guess we should discuss this a lot because I would like everyone having similar experience to be aware of the problem.
It's generally understood at this point that metal phones get worse reception. HTC devices do not have a good track record of having good reception on Sprint as it is (Evo 4G LTE for example).
Most people who have compared the HTC One to an S3/S4 have found that the HTC One gets similar or slightly worse coverage (especially regarding 4G LTE). There are a few who say it's better on the One, but they are in the minority. The largest issue I have noticed on the One is that once it drops the 4G down to 3G, it requires an act of God to make it want to go back to 4G if your 4G signal is only marginal.
This is only a real problem because Sprint's 3G is so bad that a terrible 4G signal is actually faster and more reliable than full bars of 3G in many areas.
I agree, my GF has the GS4 and it holds on to the weak LTE signal for dear life while my One prefers not even to try to get it lol
sometimes i'll 4636 and force it out of spite

M8 vs S4 radio

So, today I have been comparing my M8 against my work phone which is a S4 also on Sprint. Needless to say I'm a little upset. I do not have LTE at my house and haven't felt like leaving so all my tests have been done on 3G/WiFi.
I'll start off by saying I don't get the best 3G at my house but with multiple speed tests and downloading the same file on both devices at the same time the S4 continuously finishes much faster.
On WiFi in the same spot in my house on the S4 I will get 30mbps+/30mbps+ and on the M8 at best I get around 14mbps down.
I downloaded a 1GB file from
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download.html
On both phones at the same time. On the S4 it finished in 7 minutes and on the M8 it was only at 5% complete. I didn't even let it finish.
I have also noticed at my house if I am on LTE/CDMA mode (even when using WiFi) I will get the X above my Signal bars showing that my signal dropped. I don't seem to have this problem if I switch it to CDMA only.
I am rooted running the newest firmware, S-OFF, and BadSeed 2.0
Is anyone else having this behavior with there phone compared to another older phone? Maybe I have a defect.

Samsung has always had better radios than HTC. My M8 is MUCH better than my M7 was at holding 4G. Sprint's LTE signal sucks in most places, I'm hoping 800 LTE will fix that. One thing I always do with a new device is remove the proxy that is in place. That can help with speed. I don't think the S4 should be that much better. Download signal check make sure when you are running the test you are doing them at the same signal levels. To remove the proxy you will need your MSL, dial ##3282#, edit, advanced, RTSP/HTTP setting erase the IP's and port put 0 in then back out and reboot the phone and try again.
I belive the signal bars when in Cdma/lte mode shows the lte signal instead of the cdma signal which could explain the x on your signal bars. But yes mine sucks on that mode. I don't get any calls or texts coming thru unless I'm on cdma only.

My proxies were already set to 0. I have signal check on both phones they are both reporting almost the exact same numbers. But, what I don't get is why the WiFi is significantly worse. All Speed tests on WiFi show at least 50% slower on the M8 and I am manually setting the server to make sure its testing on the same servers. All servers show the same trend with 3G and WiFi.
Sent from my 831C using xda app-developers app
It seems if I have both phones right next to my router theywill both pull about the same 45/35. If I am down stairs the M8 significantly drops off while the S4 is still pretty strong although they are within about showing around 4dBm of each other.
Surprisingly I just got 1.65mbps down on the M8 on 3G and .92mbps on the S4. Then they both went below .10 on the next test. I guess it is just to hard to tell right now but it does seem the S4 is doing better 90% of the time. I will have to do some more tests in other locations and on LTE. I can get LTE less than a half mile from my house but not at my house both phones do always show connected to LTE first thing in the morning but it drops immediately as did my S3.

I would check for interference from neighboring networks. Are using 5G band for wifi? I have had no issues with wifi on this phone or my m7. However I do use the 5Ghz band with 802.11 ac with a nighthawk R7000. Samsung has always had better radios from my personal testing but again shouldn't be as much as your are having. Maybe try and get a hold of another M8 and see but I'm sure yours is fine. Any problems with calls or text is most likely related to circuit switch fall back which is a tower issue. To my surprise CSFB has worked perfect for me so far on my local towers. I was expecting all kinds of problems since my area has been so bad since last summer. So far it has worked rather well. Give that time to get fixed.

I don't think what band I'm using on WiFi should really play a factor in this. Either way you look at it the S4 is doing significantly better.
I have also tested it on LTE now, the S4 does 30%-60% better. For example on Speed test app both connected on the same server at the same time S4 will get 12mbps down and M8 only 6mbps and this is in an area with working Spark. According to Signal Check where I did this test the S4 ranges from around 4-10dBm better
I don't know anyone with a M8 so I might just goto a Sprint store and test mine against one on display.
I am almost half tempted to trade it in for a S5 even though I really like this phone.
Sent from my 831C using xda app-developers app
Well I was finally able to find a store with an M8 to exchange mine for today (last M8 at a Best Buy within 50 miles). I haven't been able to do too much tests but my WiFi is 100% better so I am happy now. I guess I did have a defective phone.

Where are you getting LTE in Riverside ? The only LTE I found was around In-N-Out near Madison, the In-N-out off of Van buren and Clay, and downtown. Riverside is dead compared to the OC and LA counties .

[Q] Signal strength (radios)

Hi everyone, waiting for my Nexus to get shipped from the GPS but I've seen some anecdotal reports on here and the Android Central forums about the signal strength not being so great on this phone. Specifically, some people report that their LG Nexus 5 shows a better signal in dB (not just bars) than their Nexus 6.
I'm a little concerned about this. I relocated just over a year ago to an area where I don't have the best coverage with Verizon at my work. At that time, I had a Galaxy S3 which had terrible radios where I literally had no coverage in many places. I upgraded to an S4 and had no issues since then although my wife's Note 3 seems to do slightly better getting LTE when I drop to 3G. Was looking forward to getting this phone as it will be my first Motorola and I've always read that Moto has some of the best radios (also read LG and Apple do too). Not gonna turn this into a Note 4 vs Nexus 6 thread because that one already exists and is a hot mess but I've been reading that the signal strength on the Note 4 is really good.
I have a ship date of 11/26 so I guess I'll find out soon enough but just wondering what people's experience has been with the Nexus 6.
Thanks!
I'm curious about this as well, I have a Nexus 4 and find its radios to be more powerful than my siblings and gfs Nexus 5s.

Mine has about the same reception if not a little better than my G3. Att is really bad where I live but I usually have LTE except for a few places but its much better than my wife's S5
i think people just get too caught up in graphical representations of signal (i.e. signal bars). Different phones and carriers show different things for the same level of actual signal. In my experience on T-Mobile on Long Island/ NYC - i get as good if not better signal than i did with my nexus 5. There are a few spots where i had no signal with my nexus 5 that i now get a stable weak signal with the nexus 6. To me, it really has been as good or better, but certainly not worse. With that said, graphically spots where the nexus 5 said i had full bars of service (5/5), the N6 reports as having (4/5), but the service is the same. Speed tests and dbm all match up, so i can just assume it's the way it's being displayed.
The sony Z3 I had had the same dbm that the Nexus 6 is showing in my office, but the visual bars on the Nexus 6 show as being lower. I haven't had any slower speeds anywhere with the Nexus 6 so far. One thing I have noticed is that I'm not getting 4G while on the phone the majority of the time. I haven't had that be an issue in the past. I'm on T-Mobile.
Now THIS is something that I have really been wanting to know. The fact that I too have heard about how good Moto's radios have been in the past really got my hopes up for this phone. I currently rock an AT&T Note 3. And IDK if I just got a lemon, or if Samsung really did throw the cheapest POS radio in their last year flagship phone. But of all the android phones I have owned (Sony, HTC, Moto, samsung) this one gets hands down the worst signal strength I have ever had. Further more, I make it a habbit to compare this thing to every other AT&T phone I can, from friends and family. And not one of them has ever had worse signal strength than I. The closest one had about -3dB less than mine. Most had -5 or even -10dB better. Even after flashing every single AT&T radio firmware, different cases, it still is just terrible. Right now sitting in my house it is at -100 and showing 3 bars. I work as a drive tester for cell towers, and my test phone is a sprint Nexus 5. So I cant compare it to my note, being on a different network.
But on to the topic of the N6, since it has radios for pretty much every network, would that mean that said radios are of a lesser quality? I had really hoped that this phone would blow my Note 3 out of the water on AT&T. Honestly, even if it isn't as good as other Moto phones, it still has to be better than my Note 3. Even dads S5 active and moms S4 get much better signal strength numbers than mine. Forgive me for asking this, but is this something that can be improved within the dev community with some flashing, or is it just a hardware limitation?

Haha I am not alone! Well, here's to better signal in the N6!!!
Seems to me that the nexus 6 reports low signal as time without signal. Hasn't been an issue here as I'm always connected to lte even in places I'd drop to 3g
So anything new on Signal? I'm trying to buy a Nexus6 but haven't been able to on Verizon. Hope there is some good news there has been a lot of bad.

Best and most consistent connection/speeds of any device I've owned on Verizon.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Make sure when u unlock your device that you change your cellular networks to LTE. When I unlock my device I wasn't getting no cell signal or phone call and I noticed my networks were set at ( Global ) so I switched it back to LTE.

I'm on Verizon and really doesn't make much difference on my Droid Maxx. Maybe its something in 5.0. I gotta give it a shot can always send it back if I can ever get one. Pisses me off I got the money for the phone and I can't buy it. Maybe that's some kind of sign. lol
I get a little better signal than my wife's Note 4 in the same locations. She has an otterbox commuter case on though and I'm still running around naked.
I have similar experiences with my N6, or had. I've only had it for 2 days though, but I was having signal drop out and 3g/LTE switching a lot yesterday. I changed my APN protocol to IPV4/IPV6 instead of IPV6 and today its been fine. I don't know if that actually had anything to do with it or not, but thought I'd share. I think its just a coincidence and for some reason my signal just decided to work better. Worth a shot.
So I changed to LTE and now I don't have a global option.... I travel internationally for work very expensively (T-Mobile free worldwide data ftw) and had found previously on my Nexus 5 that I needed to be on global for it to work anywhere else...
Any ideas here?
When there's a CDMA SIM in the phone (Verizon/Sprint), it shows the global option where it can use both CDMA and GSM networks. When there's a GSM SIM in the phone (Tmo, AT&T, etc.), it seems to go into GSM-only mode (no need to display global, which seems to mean GSM+CDMA in the Nexus 6's case).

Interesting change from the Nexus 5. Previously, I had to be sure global was selected overseas as opposed to just LTE, so you can see why I was originally concerned. Good to know. Thanks for the info man!
