Lollipop! - What features do you want in Android 5.0? - Nexus 7 General

Android 5.0 is coming soon!
So what do you xda-ers want in Android 5?

Update for KLP for my Xperia S

It's called Miracast
I don't really know what I want to be honest, but as long as PIE controls don't become a standard feature of AOSP, I can live with whatever changes that come with 5.0

I don't think they will make PIE standard since it's not very obvious for a regular Joe to figure out immediately, and to be honest is not the most practical and should never be a default navigation method, the taskbar is here to stay. I don't mind it being a complimentary feature, but not a default. I admit I do use the Nav Ring to launch extra apps (where you swipe up to access Google Now).
I'm happy with 4.2.2 now, just looking for more smoothness and optimized the interface for tablet, I still think they have some way to go especially for 10" tablet. But the new "card" interface is looking promising.
I don't think they will announce a new Nexus device at I/O, neither will there be Android 5.0. You can expect Android 4.3 and wait till September for a new Nexus device and 5.0, this is my prediction. Also I think the will be no Miracast for this model, but maybe the next one. For now you will have to be content with this: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...our-display-on-a-computer-at-25fps-root-only/ Just making sure to dampen the enthusiasm and realize variety of ports and connection options isn't Google vice, they prefer you to enjoy their cloud services. I would be delighted to be wrong in this case.

General tweaks...
Speed tweaks, better RAM management, more buttery than buttery.
Also, better kernel management and more developer options, more open to development like the OUYA is.
Some features like improved voice recognition and graphics control on games would be great.
Peace,
shandy1996

Google Wallet being compatible with phones other than Nexuses. (Meaning without having to go through wonky install processes)
Google Now improvements. Many it's just me, but Now is pretty laggy on myNote 2 and N7
Being able to upload to Google Music from your phone/tablet
Overall speed/performance improvements like everyone else said.

Possibly improvements to the battery performance and power management. For example like HTC have done with their devices and they can go into deep sleep when not in use.

it would be awesome if google replace java platform with any other thing..but it's just my dream... look at iOS.. it isn't based on java and it is incomparable faster than android...this **** called java slow down this amazing os..

Gesture Controls and more
It would be great if Google adds gesture controls rather than using Virtual Keys! Features to remove Google apps if needed! Bring a new private messaging inbuilt app for confidential use . Shrinking the keyboard layout for more visibility. Add unwanted calls and msgs to blacklist. Pulsing led light for important calls messages and emails . Dock the phone to display a desktop virtual screen.

Re: Key Lime Pie! - What features do you want in Android 5.0?
I would like it to be more raw..
Let me clarify, developers can't make a device 100% fluid because of how Android 4.X.X is built. So if Google just made 5.0 so that developers could build the software around the hardware, it would be 100% fluid. They tried to make android more fluid with JB, but that only does so much.

Are OEMs actually allowed to market a vanilla Android device that isn't a Nexus line?

It's a simple question, but without a simple answer. With all of the OEMs in the Android environment, none of them have ever released a phone with vanilla Android without the direct partnership (or prodding) of Google in some way.
Most everyone agrees that the OEMs want to differentiate themselves from the competition and this is how they go about it, but why hasn't one ever released a phone without additional "features" or UI overlays? It doesn't make sense to believe Google isn't somehow leveraging their brand recognition of the Nexus line when dealing with OEMs.
Has an OEM pushed out a vanilla Android Jellybean device (or ICS) not in the Nexus line that still comes with Gapps?
Edit:
Meant for Android General, not Nexus 7 forum. Sorry :3
Android is Open Source, so yes, they can. Don't know the deal with the Market though
In addition, if OEM wants to include the Play Store and any GApps, the device needs to be certified by Google. Therefore, you see many low-end tablets do not come with Play Store or GApps and must be sideloaded.
Lenovo just moved out of their App Shop business and going back to Play Store. Also, Acer is having issues with the Aliyun (Alibaba) issue with Google
simple question, simple answer.. yes. problem is the oem's want to add their own touches, and the providers want to add their crapware.
Probably the main reason I like ASUS is they seem to make very little changes to Android, looks almost stock, and they've been doing a good job updating tablets with the latest version of Android. So I think they are the closest we have to a pure Android non-Nexus tablet.
They released the g2x with vanilla android gb but still a lot of people wanted those extras from LG's optimus 2x features like its clock and launcher.
I just started enjoying touchwhiz after a few months and now I can't use my s3 without it.
The nexus 7 seems to actually to plain in my opinion since with all the improvements over that years with android and their respective manufacturers ui like sense and touchwhiz

Everyone *****es about the skins and delays. But sometimes oems add worthwhile features too. If I were an oem I would work with some third party developers and bundle good pay apps with the phone (uninstallable of course.) like nova launcher, Camera ect. Leave most of the base os alone, making updates easier.

Android 5.0 KLP. What do you want out of it?

What does everyone want out of the newest major version of Android what do we want removed from it I thought I would start this thread just to see peoples opinions of key lime pie.

Don't mean to be rude. However there is already a thread on this.

Apparently what Google want from it is support for older or less powerful devices as that's what they're concentrating on (or so the rumours go so far), it's supposedly going to run well on any device with 512MB or more.
-Better battery management
-Major UI overhaul (Holo is a bit gloomy)

I hope that Google devs will rush to this thread just to take our ideas, wants and needs for KLP as clearly in your logic they haven't planned anything yet and most likely this is not in the pipeline of Android development.
And also I don't have anything against threads like this just I don't really think there's a purpose to discuss what we would like to have - we will get what Google has planned for us.

Android 4.4 Kitkat Impressions Thread

Now that ROMs are being built from the Nexus 5 4.4 source, what are your impressions on the update?
Also, please specify if you're using the OTA update or a Nexus 5 4.4 variant because the performance on both can depend greatly on it.
Anyway, my impressions:
Nexus 5 4.4 AOSP build:
+ The no black bars in the status bar and nav bar when in the homescreen is pretty nice looking
+ Homescreen with the Google Now stuff looks pretty good too
+ The clock doesn't look ugly anymore now that Google got rid of the bolded font
+ I like showing more information about battery drain from apps that use location
+ Bigger focus on Google Now.
+ It looks like more control on Google Now too like adding reminders and easier to modify preferences.
+ Easier and more apparent way to open Google Now and Camera from the lockscreen
+ Easier to choose a default Launcher now that it's in the Settings
- The white font when not in the homescreen (the black bars return) make apps look really plain and bland.
- Moving to neutral colours for other apps like the Keyboard make it looks plain as well
- I'm not really liking the changed Roboto font
- Tougher to add screens and widgets
- Dialer's design is all over the place. It has a new interface but then it looks the same when calling someone. Can't comment on the Yellow Pages thing since I think it's not working on this build.
- The app drawer icons are way too big and since some icons weren't made with such a high resolution, the consistency seems off.
I can't comment on the NFC part because it didn't seem to work on this build.
Anyway, yeah, the bland, grey colours are really bothering me. It looks very soul-less but I think I just need to get used to it.
Flashing another 4.4 rom now and see if that's better

Yes, I know but I thought it would be good to have a separate thread for impressions considering that thread started off as a speculation thread. And now that it's out, impressions from users using Kitkat would be beneficial for people looking for information about Kitkat

Have you ran it long enough to notice battery life is great compared to 4.3?
Google now integrated into the launcher?
Performance is same as 4.3 and has no optimizations as of yet?
Transitions are very smooth.
Overall this is a great upgrade from 4.3, most people are just not looking at the right parts of the ROM to notice it is greater.

The performance is very good, it benchmark better than stock 4.3 for me. The interaction response doesn't change, but it try to make the transition smoother like with iOS. Overall a very good update, visibly it has more to do with gapps integration. I think it persuade me to stick with the Nexus 4 instead of upgrading right now.
If you don't think there are enough change, stay with 4.3, don't update to 4.4.

I really wish the lock screen had the transparent nav and status bars too, looks so silly when they disappear without so much as a fade animation when the phone is unlocked
Say.."bombs away nsa".. You get to watch live drone strikes in Afghanistan, don't worry about watching shoeless peasents being killed because there will be reassuring propaganda adverts before and after assuring you that it's helping women and children in Muslim countries.
Comparing 4.4 with 4.3 right now is stupid, we don't even have the updated binaries yet... judge it when its complete, not while it must still be considered a hackjob (and calling it that is not an attempt to diminish the efforts of the people who built the ROM with the older binaries).

Once you're using an official 4.4 build you'll find the opposite is true. Right now all people are using is a mocked up 4.4 using the 3.4 kernel. After some research many people claim that the 3.4 kernel is the worst power efficient version in recent history...An official 4.4 build uses either 3.8 or 3.10 if I'm not mistaken.

So can we use 4.3 Kernels with these early builds?
You know I see slot of speculation on an update that is not even released yet for this device. No kernel, no binaries, no nothing at all. Yet people complain.

[Q] what is so great about kitkat for the htc one?

The HTC one doesn't get no design changes, or new features and the tap to pay and printing isn't new. I use Google cloud printing beta before. I am disappointed in this update I was expecting some " okay Google" features from my home screen but hey begger can't be choosers. What do you guys think?
You can get the okay Google and transparence features by side loading the GEL apk which is literally everywhere on the net. Also 4.4 brings even further optimization. Its been since ice cream sandwich that visual changes were a big thing. Google focused more onnubder the hood changes

Fast and smooth!:good:
It's mostly under the hood stuff. You have to remember that KIT KAT was designed to be able to run on mid to low tier phones.
People are getting kit kat to run on the HTC HD2! That's really old!
If it's optimized to run on low spec phones, imagine how well it should run on the HTC One.
I'm running it right now and it's snappy smooth. But the HTC One's specs were already good enough to run Sense 5.0, so I imagine it's just future proofing the device to run snappy smooth.
Kit kat has been great for me. Let us not forget just a short time ago htc one official versioning was stalled at android 4.2.2 so relax, and enjoy what you have! Unlock it, root it, install fun things! Theres a mod or theme out there for just about everything.

What do you think, will Android gonna be better and faster (like iOS)

I'm not talking about phones getting better hardware (cpu, gpu, ram) I'm talking about Android getting better and faster. Let's face it, iOS is better when we talk about speed, iPhone has double lower specs and it still runs so fast and fluid. My question is will Android ever gonna be fast like that. What do you think?
I think it is going to happen. Because latest version of Android is launching. I have found that updated version of Android is more faster than previous version.
Nah, I know I sound like an Android hater but lets face it. Android is an open-source OS and most smartphones run it. iOS is fast because it's only optimized for 3 devices, iPhone, iPad and thr iPod Touch. Android can only succeed if only it was only optimized for a few popular brands, perhaps. (talking about Samsung/HTC/SONY/LG). Other than that, both are great OS' in different ways.
No.
Because in order for Android to be 'faster like iOS', it would need to sacrifice customization, multitasking and it would have to become a closed system.
I'll gladly take the occasional stutter if it gives me the ability to use custom launchers, icons, lockscreens, xposed and roms, as well as use several apps actively at once.

I think the answer is yes, but only once ART gets implemented by default. I've used it in the developer options and it does improve the performance but it's also not quite ready for prime time.

5.0 uses ART instead of Dalvik.. That's why Xposed doesn't work on Lollipop.
It's ready and it's here. Have a read: http://developer.android.com/about/versions/android-5.0-changes.html

yes
Android it's getting bigger and better everyday. iOS seems to stagnate imho, so my answer is Yes
here we go again, the main problem with androids ainĀ“t the android itself, its either hardware or drivers
and untill 5.0, the lack of multi threaded render(this is more important than ART when it comes to overall fluidity of the system)
I think the problem lies in android code itself. We have the hardware but the software cant support it.
Even nexus devices lag after sometime so I guess the software is at fault here..
If you want to discuss anything iOS please go to a different site....
