Now that ROMs are being built from the Nexus 5 4.4 source, what are your impressions on the update?
Also, please specify if you're using the OTA update or a Nexus 5 4.4 variant because the performance on both can depend greatly on it.
Anyway, my impressions:
Nexus 5 4.4 AOSP build:
+ The no black bars in the status bar and nav bar when in the homescreen is pretty nice looking
+ Homescreen with the Google Now stuff looks pretty good too
+ The clock doesn't look ugly anymore now that Google got rid of the bolded font
+ I like showing more information about battery drain from apps that use location
+ Bigger focus on Google Now.
+ It looks like more control on Google Now too like adding reminders and easier to modify preferences.
+ Easier and more apparent way to open Google Now and Camera from the lockscreen
+ Easier to choose a default Launcher now that it's in the Settings
- The white font when not in the homescreen (the black bars return) make apps look really plain and bland.
- Moving to neutral colours for other apps like the Keyboard make it looks plain as well
- I'm not really liking the changed Roboto font
- Tougher to add screens and widgets
- Dialer's design is all over the place. It has a new interface but then it looks the same when calling someone. Can't comment on the Yellow Pages thing since I think it's not working on this build.
- The app drawer icons are way too big and since some icons weren't made with such a high resolution, the consistency seems off.
I can't comment on the NFC part because it didn't seem to work on this build.
Anyway, yeah, the bland, grey colours are really bothering me. It looks very soul-less but I think I just need to get used to it.
Flashing another 4.4 rom now and see if that's better

Yes, I know but I thought it would be good to have a separate thread for impressions considering that thread started off as a speculation thread. And now that it's out, impressions from users using Kitkat would be beneficial for people looking for information about Kitkat

Have you ran it long enough to notice battery life is great compared to 4.3?
Google now integrated into the launcher?
Performance is same as 4.3 and has no optimizations as of yet?
Transitions are very smooth.
Overall this is a great upgrade from 4.3, most people are just not looking at the right parts of the ROM to notice it is greater.

What are the odds we get touchboost fixed?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The performance is very good, it benchmark better than stock 4.3 for me. The interaction response doesn't change, but it try to make the transition smoother like with iOS. Overall a very good update, visibly it has more to do with gapps integration. I think it persuade me to stick with the Nexus 4 instead of upgrading right now.
If you don't think there are enough change, stay with 4.3, don't update to 4.4.

I really wish the lock screen had the transparent nav and status bars too, looks so silly when they disappear without so much as a fade animation when the phone is unlocked
Say.."bombs away nsa".. You get to watch live drone strikes in Afghanistan, don't worry about watching shoeless peasents being killed because there will be reassuring propaganda adverts before and after assuring you that it's helping women and children in Muslim countries.
Comparing 4.4 with 4.3 right now is stupid, we don't even have the updated binaries yet... judge it when its complete, not while it must still be considered a hackjob (and calling it that is not an attempt to diminish the efforts of the people who built the ROM with the older binaries).

Once you're using an official 4.4 build you'll find the opposite is true. Right now all people are using is a mocked up 4.4 using the 3.4 kernel. After some research many people claim that the 3.4 kernel is the worst power efficient version in recent history...An official 4.4 build uses either 3.8 or 3.10 if I'm not mistaken.

So can we use 4.3 Kernels with these early builds?
You know I see slot of speculation on an update that is not even released yet for this device. No kernel, no binaries, no nothing at all. Yet people complain.

Hello folks.. i'm thinking of getting the HTC One. I'm really in love with it but i'm a rom junkie. As you know HTC One X got the official CM support 6 months later what do you think about the One? Will it get the CM on time or like 5 or 6 months later as One X?
Ask to CM team as they are the only person who can precisely answer
Send from my S3 (2nd HTC one goes for replacement)
Yet they are the ones who push us back to this forum and say "if we will support something then it will be HERE in the forums"
So I think he should ask here and just maybe one of the cm devs will give us an answer

I just saw that Codeworkx is getting the One... So yeah, I expect there will be CM love for the One. Though like many say, I don't think it's worth it just yet. But when Android 5.0/KLP hits us, it will be hard to resist a CM11 build if available..
source: codeworkx.de (3rd of 4th post)
Koush has ordered the unlocked developer version (x2), so he will be supporting CM for sure.
And as for the S4, team Hacksung has already said they *wont* be supporting it, so don't expect that to be better.
In the end, as many have said, both devices will get CM, whether official or not. But why you would want to lose great features like Zoe and the new gallery I don't know. Just install Nova or Apex launcher, and Sense will be out of your face 90% of the time while keeping access to the good bits.

It's not about JellyBean i won't even consider flashing another JB rom on Sense 5. But Key Lime Pie is on the horizon and i can't resist to give it a try. Yes HTC is a weird bird slow as hell to get official anything. ie thunder bolt. With this 4 Meg ultra camera I see the support for that being unrealistic ie 3d no one ever got that to work.

Apparently what Google want from it is support for older or less powerful devices as that's what they're concentrating on (or so the rumours go so far), it's supposedly going to run well on any device with 512MB or more.
-Better battery management
-Major UI overhaul (Holo is a bit gloomy)
-The ability to sync app data across multiple devices.

I hope that Google devs will rush to this thread just to take our ideas, wants and needs for KLP as clearly in your logic they haven't planned anything yet and most likely this is not in the pipeline of Android development.
And also I don't have anything against threads like this just I don't really think there's a purpose to discuss what we would like to have - we will get what Google has planned for us.

There are phones that have been out a lot longer that don't have 4.3... And 4.3 is in the testing stages... Be patient it has only been 2 months... They're still doing bug fixes... And with 4.4 right around the corner they may or may not just move to that.

My question is: is there really a need for the update? Granted, I do want wish to install some apps that only work only with 4.3. But they are not that necessary.
With the leaks about 4.4, printing and payment option, seriously, do you really need those things?

Even if development finally picks up with this phone the only good Roms (at least for me) will be the Roms based off stock and that means I'll have to wait until an official 4.4. So to curb my need for rooting and flashing I'll just use a nexus lol.

They are pushing more and more system stuff into the Play Store, and the Moto X is about as well optimized for that as can be, so at least we have that. As much as I love the AOSP I'd be happy if Googlrola pushed everything but the kernel into play services, at least for their phones.

The upcoming release of the Android camera app will feature refreshed user interface. Today’s increasingly popular background-blurring, portrait-friendly effect will be on board too, joined by improved panorama and Photo Sphere modes.

If we look at the releases order, nexus 7 2012 should be the nexus that loses the support first. But they should increase the time, just look at S2 how many updates has got and it';s not a nexus.
Hope it does come to the N4, as I'm having major BT issues at the moment. Surely the 18months should start at end of production as well?
So no fix for headset microphone volume issues? I know they may ignore us, but considering Nexus 5 having the very same issue, it seems a little bit strange...

Last time they made some excuse regarding Ti/OMAP processor. This time being a snapdragon thats also used in Nexus 7, I don't see any reason for non release of update. We should all in fact assume we will get the official update. Google need to look at Apple's support of old devices like iPhone 4 and get a damn clue.

Yeah, they should gimp the update, not include new features, and make the phone laggy. That's totally what Google should do.
No thanks. I'd rather get no update(or just get unofficial updates via ROMs) than get an official update that bogs the phone down.

Yeah, now the difference it's just a higher frequencies to make a equality between the higher resolutions and a little bit faster memory. We should definetly lose the support at the same time with nexus 7 2013 which has the same processor on a higher resolution which means worse performance in games especially. They have no excuse now ....

That is a clocked down Snapdragon 600. I suspected the 18 months period might have been the reason to go with this one internally instead of the S4 Pro.
Worst case is still that they keep the ancient linux because Qualcomm's mess is so huge they don't have a chance to support a newer kernel. But it might happen because the S4 Pro is in so many devices.
I am the only one not interested in upgrading to Lollipop? I'm a big fan of Xposed, especially App Settings, as I do not like the standard DPI.
With the introduction of ART runtime, Xposed does not work. It does not look that likely that it will work anytime soon. This is have a big impact on my ability to customize my N910H.
I'm also a big fan of app settings, but that won't affect me changing the dpi, everything can be modded manually and flashed just like older days and enjoy the lower dpi values

Thanks. I've admired your mods from my Note 2 days. As I haven't seen any DPI modded apps for the Note 4 I was getting concerned.
So you think that setting the system to, say, 420DPI, will not be a problem? Modded apps will appear for In Call UI, Lockscreen, Calc etc etc?

yes, it can be done. without xposed manual mods will be back in action
SO how does one change the dpi for apps without app settings?
I just need it for root explorer, gmail and chrome.
I imagine A5 will give us a bit more smooth trip with TW. Not even Samsung can mishandle A5 that much I hope I love xposed but I love a smooth and micro lag free ride even more.
my estimate is that when the big manufacturers (samsung/lg/motorola/etc) all finish updating their mid to top range smartphones to lollipop(lets say in samsung case for example: S4, note 3, S5, note 4) exposed will come with it as well. right now maybe 0.1% of all android devices have android 5.0, so I can see why the dev working on it taking his time as there is simply not high enough demand for it. (one of the reason i'm not upgrading to 5.0 too atm)

From what I've read it might be impossible to get ART working with xposed. I too am happy to wait, but we might never get xposed with A5
sent from somewhere
Hell I'm bored to death with Android honestly

I am also very happy with Android 4.4.4, its got very little bugs, incredibly stable and efficient, all I want is further optimising of power usage and app optimisation, thats all I ask for, but hey, this is how tech works, got to moving, and the great thing in 5.0 is ART, apps should run faster, better audio, better memory management, etc etc...I am not in a rush, I am glad we will be getting 5.0.1 and not the buggy 5.0

Yep agree on that. Lollipop definately has some improvements over 4.4.4. Although 4.4.4 is really running perfectly.
I will be looking forward to 5.1 though, as 5.0.1 is not yet perfect...still has some bugs.
I thought I was the only one thinking like this because all I've been seeing is hype ? but reading through your comments got me thinking about actually upgrading to Lollipop... I love Xposed to the point I can't live without it but if 5.0.1 is THAT great... Idk anymore.
Also, does anyone know if there's an official forum or something here on xda for all this xposed situation?

I'm sure A5 will be great, but sure that that it will great enough to give up xposed, at least until there are alternatives for tweaking the UI. Xposed has its own forum on XDA. At present there doesn't seem much hope for getting it to work with A5.

I was using xposed on my stock rooted rom but had a huge battery drain, didn't find out why, anyway i started using X-Note on my N910H and its amazing, multi dpi without xposed, no battery drain and lots and lots of mods, amazing rom, i have no complaints at all :fingers-crossed:

Lollipop is awesome. I just put it on my mates sm-n910f, and we were looking at Google cardboard vr apps....
They were running at close to TWICE!! the frame rate that they were running at on KitKat touchwiz. Unbelievable.
The UI is noticeably much smoother too. Highly recommended. More than that, it's an absolute must have IMO..
I've got it on my s4 also, and there's not a thing I can do with it to make it skip a single frame anywhere. Love it.

Thanks. I hope there will be similar benefits when it hits our N4.
