Help!!!

I Have the new cyanogen rom 4.0.2 installed. For some reason my phone is just stuck on the android logo. I need help because i'm sort of new with this rooting business. Somebody please help because I'm freaking out right now.

Is it stuck at the android screen or is it boot looping? And don't freak.. rooting, if you've done some research isn't too bad.

It was stuck on the android screen. But I wiped the data and installed a fresh copy of cyanogen mod.

So you got past the android logo?

Yes, now I did because I wiped everything and then installed a new copy. So far it seems to be working. Fingers crossed.

That's a question that only you have an answer for. I don't personally like the xROM but that's because I've tasted Hero and can't let it go When it comes to the different roms if you really want to know how they run, flash and test! This is going to be the best way for you to see the differences between the roms. (also check the rom's change logs. they have information about updates and whatnot)

Last question, do I need to wipe the phone clean before going to different rom or just flash the rom?

Most of the non-hero roms you can flash without wiping. But if you run into bootloops, then you'll need to wipe.

No problem man

If you plan on trying any Hero roms makes sure you update the new Radio and SPL. And please god make sure you do the RADIO FIRST then the SPL. If you don't do it that way you will have a $400 paperweight.
And my opinion, stick with non-Hero for now. Not saying they aren't good but I have tested all of them for a day or 2 each and even with a class 6 sd card and trying different swap values and sizes they always have some lag. If you are a casual user then I suppose you would be fine, but I have a business to run and cannot afford to miss any calls or texts. I need the web to run and be able to go home without and lag, or to get a quick email out in under a minute. Some people here say its just as fast but I have to disagree for the most part. When the dev's can get these new sets of hero rom's to be fully stable/optimized maybe I will try again but if you rely on your phone like I do then you may want to stick with cyan/xrom/jf for now.

[Q] Why go back to stock 2.1 before each flash?

Hey all. Just joined the forums a few minutes ago and I have a burning question on why it is necessary to flash back to stock with odin before you try different roms. Why can you not just boot into clockwork, factory wipe, wipe cache, wipe d cache and then simply load the new rom from sd? The reason I ask is because I have been bouncing between cognition and paragon for about 2 weeks now NOT using the method of flashing back to stock 2.1 without a single problem. I'm sure there is a good reason flashing back to 2.1 before trying new roms, I would just like to know why. I was able to preform a stock wipe using odin3 one time last week (just did it to make sure the phone would do it) it just seems like a really long process, but I'll start doing it that way to avoid a brick.

long process? extra 5 minutes when you get used to it. if you are ATT use ODIN ONE CLICK to restore stock 2.1 (hint: it takes one click)

For the most part, you don't really need to flash back to stock. It used to be a bigger deal to flash back to stock because some of the Roms would intervene with each other and mess things up. It is still recommened for a clean flash, but I rarely do it and my flashes work great.

I have been trying roms weekly since November and have only needed to flash to stock twice, after failed flashes caused by my lack of patience. YMMV of course

It's not necessary and not even a good idea. Also, why wipe cache and d-cache when the install script does that?

ROMs don't mod or use any files which are on the phone prior to installing them. All the files on your phone after the install were in the CWM flashable zip file. Any ROM cook would be stupid to do otherwise. The exception would be no-wipe ROMs, but you would never flash to stock before using one of those.

Ive also wondered this as well and talking to guys like opcow, and a couple other Devs such as MikeyMike and a lot of guys at the Andromeda IRC they all agree that you should be perfectly fine now as long as you wipe everything before you flash.
I may try with Andromeda when I get home because I have my PC and Jig there just in case but still may try now. But also tlaking to a lot of users that they dont even do it anymore now because of the install scripts and as Opcow said if you think logically its technically safer.

Actually thats not true at all.
If your a build 1009 and under you can use the one click. Although the build 1008 sometimes have problems.
But for the Build 1010's and up (like me) you have to use Odin3 and take a good 30-40 minutes just to get to JH7 because half of the time I lose my 3 buttons then have to push the 3 button fix over via ADB. I have gotten use it and its a pain in the ass.
And the time I listened to someone that says ALL ATT people can use the one click it completely ****ed my phone and if I didnt have a jig my phone would have been completely screwed up.
Im not trying to be rude im just saying I saw a post very similar to that a couple weeks ago and it came very close to completely bricking my phone and reading posts here now saying they have the same problem and if they dont have a jig they just got a 200 dollar paper weight.
Sorry for getting off topic back to topic today Im going to flash Andromeda over Darkyy 9.3 and wipe data cache and d cache in CWM and see how it goes although everyone and even the devs and a lot of users now a days say it should work perfectly.

+1 Guys if you don't know exactly what to do/suggest please don't say it. I'm not trying to start a war, but a wrong suggestion can easily soft or hard brick someones phone. This is a forum, so no one can stop you from saying things, but think about if it happened to you? You would be pissed!
Anyways back on topic, what model phone do you have, because having a 1009 model phone makes flashing and going back to stock (usually) so much easier. But then again, I rarely use odin because all the roms are compatible for the most part.

I've never used ODIN because I haven't wanted to try to run it from GNU/Linux in a virtual box.
I just wipe and flash from clockwork like the op. Been flashing roms for a couple months now, never had a single problem. (except when I noobed it up by trying to flash back to a nandroid backup via Rom Manager. Even then, didn't need Odin to sort it out).
If I ever run into a problem, then I'll try Odin, but I'm waiting to cross that bridge till I come to it.

To prevent exceptions or troubles from the version you already have... so everybody comes from the same rom, understand?

I flash to jf6 because that's what I have been conditioned to do for a while. However, the few times I was impatient and didn't....no problems either.
From all the reading I've done here, the only reason to do it is for the placebo effect.

There was once a time when all the new roms were built on the unofficial froyo and it only had 3e recovery. The quickest way to get around that was to flash stock. Also the lag fixes were tricky and easily fixed by flashing stock. Now recovery is in the kernel. As long as you insure the kernal lag fix in rom A understands the kernal lag fix in rom B flash away. Nandroid backups are kind of useless they don't backup the kernal or the modem. Save odin for when things go really wrong(;~ )

I have done it both ways, and there its no difference going back to stock and or flashing over other roms. I flash often, have not got stick in boot loop in months

I like to go back to stock since I KNOW that everything has been defaulted back to normal. Just a security blanket step for me.

I flashed andromeda over darkyy 9.3 just wiping data cache and d cache. Nothing wrong. Everything worked perfect so I got to believe that if you just wipe everything it should work perfectly.
Just for safety I got a jig and odin but for now I'm saving a good 45 minutes to not flash back to stock

Bricked in 48 hours...

Well, long story short, had it 2 days and hard bricked it. Here's the question though. Im getting a new one in an hour or two, and I'm looking for the absolute idiot proof version of rooting and getting a rom and kernel on the phone. I had a samsung moment, and I never had any issues with any of the flashing or anything on that. I have read probably 200 different post on rooting and 3e recoveries and roms and whatnot. Can someone suggest a decent set-up, maybe a 2.3 rom, and a recovery that works well together. I do not tether, and i dont really need to overclock it (maybe later). I just want to be able to have my phone run smooth, be able to install non market apps and have everything work well together...

There is nothing we can really say that hasn't been said already in those 200 other posts you mentioned.

make sure your computer / usb cable works properly first. then just follow the steps exactly described and you should be fine.

Are you sure it was a hard brick? This is somewhat of a "learn as you go" kind of thing. The devs on here post excellent instructions on what to do to get there Rom on your device. I would suggest MikeyMike's 2.3.3 JVB Rom or my personal choice of Cezar's Continuum 2.3.3 Rom with JVH Talon Kernel. These have a slight risk because of the "bootloaders" you will need to get on your phone, but I had no trouble and would do it again in a heart beat.
Take your time reading the instructions in the Rom you choice to go with, then read it again. Then go through the post to see what others had problems with, because 9 times out of 10, someone has posted the question multiple times.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, you will see others posts and get to know who actually helps, who is a douche and should be avoided. This is an excellent community of people who love to mess with things and have fun doing it.
I know I did not address the question with a tutorial on how to do this step by step...because it has been done

If all you want is a smooth running phone where everything works, flash Andromeda 3.0 on it and forget about JVB, CM7 or anything with bootloaders.

@ TigerEnigma: Yes im sure it was a hard brick. I've been modding android phones since donut and this was a definite brick. I was able to get into download mode one time, and after that nada. No recovery no, download, no boot of any sort. The guys at the "Shack" didnt even question my story so no big deal.

My last phone was the moment, which is probably one of the easiest phones to mod so going from that to this was a little bit of a shock. Im going to peruse the forum some more, before making any final decisions. i may try this stuff tonight so hopefully all goes well...

Make a jig also. I made a jig that saved me and the guy i work with. Also if you are looking for a 2.3 rom then do go with a JVH build and not JVB.

[Q] A few questions about mods, from a total n00b

I have a Sprint HTC hero with original everything.
I've been wanting to do a mod but that brings up a few questions.
1) A lot of places say the CM7 mod from here is great for this phone but I clicked around and can't find a list of things it changes/improves. Why would I install a mod and will most things continue to work (market places, email, phone utilities, purchased apps).
2) All roms have those warnings that they void warranty. How often do they brick the device? Is this something I should worry about?
Sorry for the noobish questions but I am looking towards modding the hero but I want to make sure I don't make it worse.

1.) well basically MOD's are roms that people cook themselves from the scratch android or from a base like for example the DesireHD android base. They can do things varying from the look and feel of android to adding elements like being able to browse Privately on your browsers. i know that CM7 allows you to do that. Being able to flash different roms opens up a even bigger Android World.
2.) I have been flashing back and forth for a long time and not once have i bricked the device. Besides not like a little system restore wont fix anything. Also if you happen to send you device into maintenance or repair just restore you phone back to factory settings. All of it is reversible. When i first started out it helped me to really read NOOB forums so i didn't do something i would regret, but you should have nothing to really worry about.

reply from a still nearly noob, although i read alot about roms already and flashed my sgs2. ill just attemt to help you a little here.
1) i now flashed lite'ning rom on my phone as there is no cm7 for it yet. once realeased i will also flash it as i also read that it is the most widely used rom with best support. within a thread of the specific rom there should be a list of improvements/major changes or what will be added if you flash the rom. these and mostly more battery life and/or more speed are the reasons people flash roms. after flashing the phone you will have all the things still working, sometimes even better. for apps it depends on the rom. mine for example didnt require a wipe that delets all you data on the phone. others (as i think cm7 also) require a wipe of all you on-phone personal data apps and so on (not sd card if im not mistaken, please correct me!)
2)yes, you void warranty if you flash a custom rom, root or do sth else on the firmware not published by the manufacturer. when i flashed and overflashed my phones rom for several time already i haven't had any problems. and as i read all over the net/xda there is just a very little chance to brick your phone and even there you might have possibilities to revive it, i think. but im not sure on this, cosider others informations first!
hope i could help you a little from noob to noob and enjoy flashing roms. oh and of course have a look in the htc hero android development section for roms!

Oh boy I really hope I am just too tired to look and info I've got so far is incorrect. My i337 Got stolen today and I managed to get Galaxy S 4 Active from ATT i537. I looked up only 1 thing before I did because only system I can use is CM11, I mean stock Samsung makes me uneasy if I am on it for more then 15 seconds. Sounds, UI, just feel and look, totally garbage. So now I see that bootloader is locked AND there is no solution to unlock it. Only then we can install some kind of Dual boot thing ? I really hope this is not true. Can I just get rid of everything Samsung and stock and get CM11 ? I don't want to waste space with stock as "not used" system.
Please let me know because like I said I had really bad day with two thugs stealing my phone, spend money on new one and now this. I just rooted it and was thinking like always I get Rom Manager and from there I install recovery ..... but phone is not listed .... I am freaking out a bit right about now. Please let me know if possible on where to start getting custom recovery cause ODIN + tar recovery files gave me magic error or something like that just now.

UPDATE: Couldn't sleep.
So I have my new phone rooted with "towel", I install Safestrap and backed up my current ROM (I am on NE3) I see now reason why this dual system needed and stuff. I mean too bad Samsung locking bootloaders and oh well. I have only 2 questions. 1 can I just install latest build from https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=jactivelte in to rom SLOT-1 and use it or no. And how much space I can allow for my current ROM and CM I mean I am not planning to have anything on stock so I don't need space at same time I cant make it that when I do want to go on stock I'd have a problem with running it because of not enough space.

Your frustration is understand. Swearing or bad language is not excused in this forum for any reason. Moderate at least title or be prepared to get warning and/or thread locked down.

You cannot install CM. Since you have a locked bootloader, it is not possible to install any custom kernels, so ROMs that require a custom kernel (CM, AOSP, or any ROM based off those) will not work. Using SafeStrap you can flash TouchWiz-based ROMs since they can use you stock kernel.
Look in the AT&T S4 forums for ROMs that say they are compatible with SafeStrap, you should be able to use most of those. Since they are meant fir a different phone you'll have to flash the MasterPatch afterwards. A lot of people seen to like the Hyperdrive ROM.

Got it. Thanks. I remember back in a day I've been using "theme" that allowed me to have Google stock feel u guess I need to look in this but for now I guess I'll just remove what I can and will suffer until Nexus 6 is in stock and I can afford it. Love that phone. Also I see 5.0 will be out for active next year so it's not that bad. Meanwhile should I do Ota update to latest stock firmware ?

If you want, you can still root the latest firmware so you have nothing to lose.
