So I generally feel I know my stuff to a limited degree about phones, but I am unsure of this...
I am using the standard "safe CM kernel" but have always prefered Philz's interface over native CWM.
Now what is the issue with this, why people don't seem to like his? Is it the fact that he's not open source 100%?
And would there be any problems with flashing his kernel onto PA and over the default CWM 6.0.1.4 (or whatever the most up to date version is)?
If someone can explain in laymans terms that would be great.
Thanks
PhilZ + PA (CM, Aospa, aosp, aokp) = total chaos bootloop
PhilZ + Touchwiz = safe kernel and root and recovery

Okay. So basically Philz kernel is for stock touchwizz (Samsung) roms only.
Because you are running a rom based on CM (and not TW), Philz kernel won't work, so you won't be able to get his modded CWM interface.
So if you flash his kernel over PA, you will get

Hi, I need help with my Galaxy Note. I just buy secondhand Galaxy Note, it has XXLS2 4.1.1 rom for now. I want flash AOSPA 4.2.1 rom on it. My previous phone was HTC HD2, so I'm used to flashing without limitation So, I need your help to tell me if I'm thing good about it. So, firstly I must flash Philz kernel for my phone, to get root and recovery. But for my rom is only version 2.7... is it safe to flash? And next I can just do full wipe, reboot, and flash AOSPA 4.2.1 rom, yes?
You won't be able to flash a aokp rom using philz 2.7 as it will not install and error 7.
-Install Philz and gain root and cwm
-Then place all the required files to flash the rom to storage.
-Then flash a different safe kernel like hydracore or cm kernel.
-Boot into recovery and do wipes and formats and flash. the rom. (while on a different kernel you might not be able to boot into the rom. Just recovery)
And version 2.7 is safe? Why there is no 3.99 version for this rom? But when I finally flash PA rom, I can stay with kernel included in this rom? Or I need to flash cm kernel second time? I'm going to make backup before flashing new rom, but I'm just wondering if I can normally recover this on PA rom or I need to flash stock philz kernel before restoring... So the "diffrent safe" kernel may be "Kernel_CM10.1_20130126_Nightly_CWM.zip", yes? It will work with aosp based pa rom? I'm going to flash 2.99 version...

Yes 2.7 is safe. Just that it cannot install some roms.
Because it's and old kernel.
Yes stay with the kernel included in the rom
Yes PA has a safe kernel and the backup can be restored.
Any kernel like hydracore or cm will do.
Also 2.99 PA might not to that's stable. So.. Your choice. You can use and older version like 2.57 as well
Actually Philz 2.7 is ICS/older JB, and therefore not subject to error 7. Good to wipe and Flash ROMs with. (It's safe too)

GT N7000
hi frds i am having a issue with Amnix Xperia ROM Build 3 for GT N7000. After I installed my antivirus & later when it finished scanning for malware it gives warning about one app - MALICIOUS APP
VOODOO-INSTANT-ANTI-EXYNOS-MEM-ABUSE-0.3.APK
EXPLOIT.EXYNOS.A
can someone pls help....is it a virus....
It's already replied in the noob friendly thread
I forget to reply, sorry. Thanks! It is all working good, so I have now my Galaxy Note with newest Paranoidandroid rom
So I'm still pretty clueless about a rooted phone and I've had Ultimate XXLSC for months now.
Questions
1.) I can't help but think that when I rooted and flashed Hydracore, on the about phone > kernel version, it says Hydracore (I don't remember the version). But when I flashed Ultimate, the kernel name changed. It now says 3.0.31-593490 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Tue Nov 27 02:33:05 KST 2012. What happened? I didn't do anything besides rooting & flashing Hydracore and a custom ROM.
2.) Since the kernel name changed, I assume that the custom ROM changed the kernel (or maybe not. I really have no idea). Do I have to re-flash Hydracore and then flash another custom ROM?
3.) Can I really flash any custom ROMs (namely TouchWiz, MIUI, CM9, CM10, AOKP, ParanoidAndroid) with Hydracore kernel (because I plan on flashing JellyBam and some other ROMs I can't remember right now)? Do I need to flash a specific version of Hydracore (if there is any) to be able to flash a certain ROM?
Thank you for the patience and time to read my n00b questions.
I don't wanna look dumb with a bricked Note because I didn't ask/consult someone about my concerns.
No you don't need to flash the hydracore kernel again. Right now you are using a custom rom so it's already with the cwm from where you can falsh another rom

Thanks.
About my 3rd question, can I flash ANY custom roms? Why is there a custom ROM that says "Make sure to run CM9/10 or an AOSP-based ROM : FLASHING/WIPING FROM STOCK ICS OR ROMS BASED ON STOCK ICS WILL RESULT IN A BRICK!" What does Make sure to run CM9/10 or AOSP based ROM mean?
It's just a example for making sure the flasher must be on a safe kernel. They simply mean don't wipe from stock ics kernel. It can be any custom kernel you can do wipe and flash any new custom rom

I currently have the JB based SweetRom v7 installed on my Galaxy Note.
Recently it was pointed out to me by a friend that CM based ROMs have a better functionality and are easier to use. Me, never having used a CM based ROM (not even on a friend's phone), am kind of in a dilemma whether or not to switch.
It would be of great help if you could help me out with the Pros and Cons of both JB based and CM based ROMs and if I should give CM a try. Also, a list (If possible) about the features which might not work/are absent from CM based ROMs..
Also, an elaborate guide to switching from JB to CM and a ROM suggestion for a first-time CM user will be very helpful.
Thanks in advance guys.

I'll answer part of your question. If you switch to a CM-based ROM, you won't be able to use S Pen-based apps such as the S Note, as it is tightly integrated into Touchwiz.
4.1.2 JB LT4 Union ROM v7, LT3 Modem, PhilZ LT4 kernel, Carrier: AT&T (US)
Will i not be able to use only the apps or the S-Pen as a whole?

You would not be able to use Samsung applications for S-pen but you can use their alternatives from play store, also FM does not work but you can use Spirit FM, No Wi-Fi Direct but you can use the alternatives from play store.
Edit: Just so that you know, CM based roms are much faster and smother than the TW or stock rom. Also has lot more customisation to it compared to TW. TW also has customization but you will have to apply then or use a customized TW rom.

Yep, as already was said here, the spen apps, and functionality like scrolling, hovering stuff doesn't work.
Not every ROM is the same, so ones can be faster and others slower.
If You would like to have many many options I would recommend You to flash the jellybam ROM. It's slower but greater.
You may also try android 4.3
Okay, So I finally decided to go with JB 4.2.2 SuperNexus ROM.
I'm still confused about how to flash it. I've gone through the procedure and I understand it all but I'm now sure how to Switch from Philz recovery to CWM recovery?
I know this sounds stupid but this is the only thing keeping me from flashing the CM Rom.
Do I flash a CM based kernel to change from Philz recovery to CWM or is there something more?
Help will be greatly appreciated!
As for note the recovery is in the kernel, you will need to flash a cm kernel.
But you could directly flash it using philz recovery. When the rom installs it will install cm kernel and overwrite philz kernel.

So I just need to flash the ROM and Gapps through Philz recovery to get it working?
All that head-banging went in vain, I guess -_-
Thanks a ton!
it wont go in vain.. will come handy some day,. there was an issue with Philz recovery not able to install CM/AOSP roms.. (error 7). which was resolved in the latter updates,, if you get the same error ... then flash a CM kernel first and then reboot recovery and flash the rom.
Sorry if this gets asked a lot, but I have just checked for the brickbug and I have it. I looked on the wiki but the links are dead except for a couple of guides and I don't know which ones are reliable.
Is there a guide that will help me root and flash CM or PA? I've done similar with a SGS2, so I know what I'm doing, I just don't know which kernels are safe to use or which method to use to not destroy my Note.
Get a root-kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
flash it from recovery and you will get root. which kernel to choose is in the thread too.
once this kernel is installed you it will be safer to flash different roms.

Thanks that worked perfectly and simply.
Just have a couple more quick questions: I used to use a LINARO/SABERMOD CM build on my SGS2, is there anything equivalent for the Note?
Also is there anything close to Dorimanx in terms of features? That was a great kernel on SGS2.
I went with CM 10.2 btw.
There is nothing optimised. No best rom or kernel. See what suits you better. Roms like PA and PAC have lots of customizations and kernels like NX has lot of tweaking avaliable.

Hi all
I have been trying to find out what the latest version of clockwerkmod is and I would just like someone who knows to inform me if the version given out by rom manager which is 6.0.4.3 is the latest and greatest just so i can make sure it has selinux support as i'm quite new to hacking android.
I have been using the thread on the original development section however could some also inform me as to what "cm only" and "tw only" means as i cant find that on the thread
Thanks
CM only : kernel will only work on cm roms.
TW only : will work only of stock based custom rom.
I think the latest for note as per the cm kernel is 6.0.4.5.

Ah, so TW would stand for touchwiz then, ok
Also I've found an update but its not sticking when i flash it. Everytime i reboot, it reverts to an old version...
You cannot flash recovery using rom manager. You will need to change the kernel.
