Lack of response in home and back buttons - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seem to be having real issues at the moment with a lack of response from these buttons. Don't remember the phone being like it when I first got it in fact it seemed very responsive. I find now I am having to press the back button several times or even kind of having to slide my finger over the button to get it to resister. I can recall a previous phone of mine having a very similar issue, think it was the Sony erricson satio but really did spoil the operation of the phone.
Anyone else experience this?

Operation of the dock shortcuts is fine as is the sensitivity of the home screen, even with the screen protector on, it's just the back and home button.

There has been a few threads on this, seems like a common issue. However theyre apparently looking at a software update to improve sensitivity- https://twitter.com/htc_uk/status/319748247075819520

I can confirm it... Is that a software problem?

I'm having the same issue, which is starting to annoy me. Not sure whether these things get worse or not, but as my wife's hasn't got the same issue, I'm not sure it's software??!! Should we be asking for the phone to be changed???

Is there supposed to be vibration when pressing the soft keys? I'm not getting any vibration and it would go some way towards helping me with the responsiveness of the buttons.

This is a software issue in the kernel.. HTC or the XDA developers should have no issues fixing it

Agreed. It's more the lack of feedback that makes them difficult to use. I have the feeling that they are sensitive enough. The problem is that there is no feedback. You just don't know where the tap is registered.

Vibrations can be enabled through settings.

I have to use my thumb to use them, they don't register my finger at all, just so annoying, I would rather a home button like the GS2.

I have it set in "Settings" -> "Sound" -> "Vibrate on touch" but I still dont get any vibrate on soft key press.

Vibrations for the capacitive buttons are turned off if you have the power saver on, regardless if you've turned vibrations on via settings.
For some reason I'm getting a much better response from the Back and Home keys when I use nova launcher as opposed to the stock sense launcher.

Use swype or any other alternative keyboards, u can change the size of the buttons and it's location
Made possible by my sexy LG Optimus 4X HD (P880)
im glad im not the only one who has the problem lol, tried other keyboards, but the space bar is still above home, if i root it, is there a setting to make it delay a fraction??
Home button does not annoy me. I rarely hit it when typing. The most annoying thing for me is that this phone heats up quickly. I got sweaty hands..
I have the same problem too

Touchscreen multitouch problems and capacitative buttons

Get multitouch visualizer from play store. the touchscreen is poor, especially with multitouch (only seems to support 2 touch points, the 2nd finger often is not detected, or causes the first to no longer be detected.) The caapacative buttons are hard to press sometimes, or do not respond. very annoying.
Enable the show touches option in the settings of the developer options, it works much better.

Probably need to disable the HTC Gesture option in Settings->Display. After that it'll recognize 10 touch points.

Just tried it with the HTC gestures turned off, multitouch visualizer 2 recognized 10 touches.
Indeed, turning HTC gestures off gives more touch points, but I still have the problem of the capacitative buttons not being as sensitive as the rest of the screen. They FREQUENTLY do not seem to register touches. Very annoying.

This seems to work for some people:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2231832
It should bring up the sensitivity for both the touchscreen and the capacitive keys which are, I presume, less sensitive than the touchscreen itself by design.
I'm not using any screen protector.
I tried the sense keyboard calibration and it had no effect.
The problem seems to be related to how FIRMLY I press the buttons. A light touch often does not register, but a firm touch always does. Never had this problem on my Evo 3D or Evo OG.
so this problem with capacitive home/back buttons is REALLY pissing me off.
went to sprint store, asked to see their display unit, told them the problem i had. guy said "I NOTICED THAT TOO". used their demo unit, EXACT same problem. Talked to some people on IRC who also noticed it.
*really* hope its software-fixable because I love the phone otherwise
I've used adb shell # getevents to see that FREQUENTLY tehre is just no event generated when pressing the home and back buttons. It *is* a hardware problem. I've never been so annoyed, displeased, or disappoined with a phone. I'll be returning it. Even tho the model I saw in the store had the exact same problem. If my next one has same problem I'll give the ol F**K YOU to HTC and not look back.
Also, havent found a way to get software keys on it...which MAY be an acceptable alternative to broken hardware buttons
I had noticed the same problem with a demo unit in one store and so went to check it out in another store where it was fine. I assumed it was specific to the first demo unit. I hope I get a decent phone.
Is anyone experiencing touches being registered slightly off from where you are actually touching the screen? I enabled show touches in dev options, just to make sure, and saw that touches were being registered just slightly lower than where the tip of my fingers were touching.

There is definitely something going on here with the capacitative buttons, as we all see.
However I'm going to give HTC a few weeks and see if they sort it out. Once enough complaints roll in they've got to do something right?

[Q] Vibration on hardware back and home buttons

One of my only complaints about this phone is that the hardware back and home buttons are a bit small. If their tap targets extended to the screen edges from the HTC logo, all would be well.
Alas, that's not the case. So, to make up for this, I was curious if there was a way to make the phone vibrate when I tap these buttons. I seem to miss these, and tap twice or more, and sometimes, I'm just being impatient, but I don't know until it's too late, since the response isn't always immediate.
They seem to vibrate for me. I'm on viper Rom but pretty sure it did it before too. It is a rather faint vibrate but it's there.

Well, maybe my phone's just being dumb, but there is definitely no vibration here. It does vibrate on other functions, though.
Anyone else able to confirm?

[Q] Issues with new HTC One

I just upgraded to an HTC One, but am having issues with this one and may need to exchange it. Before I do I wanted to see if the issues were at all common or if there is a fix for any of them.
Issues:
1. The power button is sunk in a bit. Not flush, but below the hole. It is very difficult to push and has been driving me nuts.
2. The front buttons do not light up. I saw them light up once, but most of the time I have to guess where the buttons are. Also very annoying as back, home, and power are used frequently.
3. Over half of my text messages need to be resent multiple times. This did not happen with my previous phone.
4. Smaller issue but the volume rocker is difficult to press. Big difference from the HTC EVO 4G LTE
5. Do I have to force close the power app everytime I restart the phone?
6. How do I recent apps? Holding down home goes to Google Now.
Thank you for any help.

Me too. I am gonna RMA it, this is a QC issue. Two of my other ones are fine, this one is bad.
2. The front buttons do not light up. I saw them light up once, but most of the time I have to guess where the buttons are. Also very annoying as back, home, and power are used frequently.
Does your auto brightness work properly? Many people were reporting problems with the ambient light sensor.
3. Over half of my text messages need to be resent multiple times. This did not happen with my previous phone.
I have no idea what this is. Google voice probs?
4. Smaller issue but the volume rocker is difficult to press. Big difference from the HTC EVO 4G LTE
HTC has sacrificed functionality for aesthetics. You'll get used to it, though.
5. Do I have to force close the power app everytime I restart the phone?
Why would you do this? Does the power saver notification bother you so much?
6. How do I recent apps? Holding down home goes to Google Now.
Double tap home.
Thank you for any help.

Yes, a case makes it much easier because then there is nothing to stop your fingers from pressing the volume buttons. The bezel is the culprit here.
True, but I can't imagine not having a case for such a beautiful phone

1: How flush is it? Mine is flush but I can still press it easily without a case on. With a case on, I have to place my finger a certain way.
2: The buttons are light sensitive. So if you're in the dark, they will light up. If you're out in the sun or in a room with the light on, they won't light up. That's one thing I love about HTC.
3: Umm maybe spotty coverage? Or it could be a defect. Not sure about that one.
4: Volume rocker is fine if you don't have a case on. Just try hitting it near the very top or bottom to make it easier.
5: Are you asking about the power saver notification? If yes then yeah, every time you reboot. Or you can just leave it there. I don't mind it as I am switching the power saver on and off quite often.
6: You double tap the home button.
Hope this helps!

OP, if it is hard at all to press the power button, return it or exchange it. My other Ones are SUPER easy to press. I have to get around to mailing this one in, but I'm not sure if I should because everything else about this phone is pretty much perfect.
And to see if your button lights are working, just cover the ambient light sensor with your finger. The one at the top left. Hold it for about 3 seconds. The lights should turn on. It think it's very smart that they only turn in when there is very little light.
I would have like a nav bar better though.
Okay so I'm exchanging the phone for the power button issue. Sad that the volume rocker issue will continue, but I can handle that one. The power button on mine is an absolute nightmare. I have to jam a fingernail in there to turn it on and half the time it doesn't work. Have to hit it just right.
The capacitive buttons do not light up in the light, dark, whenever. I cannot see the buttons and have to guess. Believe me, no one would love this feature. On my HTC EVO 4G LTE the lights came on. It gets annoying having to guess every time. I want the lights to come on.
My other big problem has nothing to do with google voice. I'll have full reception and not be able to make calls and text messages have to be resent. Seems like the phone is not working with the network correctly.
Yes the power saver notification is unacceptable. It is annoying to have a useless notification in the status bar. I'm not the only one it bothers and it needs to be removed permanently. Also I need Sprint ID to stop changing my custom screens. I would like my phone to work the way I want it to. I wanted an upgrade not a downgrade. When I get one with a working power button rooting should solve this, but if that wasn't an option I'd be shopping for another phone.
Figured out the double tap on home shortly after, but thanks. I still need to figure out how to stop Sprint ID from messing up my home screens. I tried disabling the icon pack for now.

Gone in 4.2, I believe. In the meantime though, you can long-press on the notification, head over to App info, and force stop the relevant app. Kills the thing quite nicely.

Can't really help you here. First thing I did when I got the phone was disable all of the bloatware (built-in Android disable function), although I later killed it off with Titanium Backup. Never had much an issue there though. Tried another launcher, maybe?

First a double negative is the only way this phrase works. Otherwise it's "I imagine having a case." which does not convey the point. Sure could go with "can't imagine leaving the phone unprotected" which is still a double negative without another "not" but that just seems nit-picky.
Also the first thing I do with phones when I get them is put a case on them. After many beautiful phones becoming banged up, scratched, ugly phones you learn that a case keeps them beautiful. The aluminum will scratch easily so putting a case on it is a good idea. There are clear cases so you can still see through. You could just be really careful and paranoid with it though it will probably get scratched anyway. It's up to you, but in no way is it odd or a contradiction to protect the appearance of a beautiful phone with a case.

Anyway, OP, I hope you can resolve these issues. The bloatware can easily be removed via root. The Power saver notification is gone in the 4.2 update. (We'll get that soon, hopefully)
The texting thing is bizzare. I really don't know what that was.

Anyone else note 4 recent and back touch keys flicker?

Just got my replacement note 4,not sure if old one did this, but when after having screen asleep when hitting power or home button to wake screen up the touch keys will sometime lightly blink once before coming completely on with screen, doesn't do it every time,it's a bit random, wondering if anyone else see's this flicker?
To test if you turn off touch key duration completely in display settings, and then turn screen off and back on u can see the touch keys still ever so slightly light up,at least on mine, just trying to figure out if normal or not.
