Broken Power Button

Anyone else have a broken power button from regular day to day use?
Mine started acting up like 2 weeks ago. I noticed I had to press the power button more than once to turn the screen off/on. As the days went by the presses increased til it eventually gave out entirely this weekend as I landed in Vegas. I had to get someone to call my phone so I can turn the screen on and download "no lock" to enable trackball wake. I've also been paranoid about not letting the battery die since I won't be able to turn the phone on.
Calling Google/HTC tomorrow.
Btw, this is my second nexus one. First one had dead pixels. I had this second one maybe a month before the power button gave up!

Bummer.. Thought this might be a weak point in the design. Thanks for the heads up on "no lock". Will use that when @ home.

Oh my god I'm having the same problem. Thought my N1's power button is now getting harder and harder to press to turn the screen on and off.
I was so angry about that, but after sometimes I figured out that the problem is not from the button (the hardware), it's because of the software. I dont know exactly from what apps which caused this, uninstalled some apps (especially apps for root only - which I thought are the main causes), but sometimes the problem occurs.
*Im using MCR r13.
And for your poor N1's button, I think it's broken because when facing with that trouble, you tried to press too hard... Bless your N1!

Not A Software Problem...
The issue you are having is indeed a hardware problem. Well for the OP it is. I had a Nexus that was in the same situation. You can tell its not a hardware problem because if you remove the battery and put battery back in, the phone wont power up unless you press the power button like 8 to 10 times. That my friend is a hardware situation.
I created a small fix for mine. I should have created a youtube video of it lol. What I did was removed the back cover and batter and inbetween the Power Button and The Phone itself youll see like a small crack or very small gap of space between the phone and button. I stuck some small very small thin piece of paper in that gap. This will raise the buttun away from the phone just a lil bit. Put the battery back in and back cover back on. And noticed my button working 100% again.
So long story short the button itself starts to not make contact with the switch on the mother board or somethin. My bootloader was unlocked so i never got HTC involved. If your on cyan lates rom you can set it to wake via trackball under settings.
In the end, I ended up selling that N1 on craigslist for loot for a HD2 and HD2 was gargage (out dated OS and 65k color max display at LCD) and ended up selling the HD2 and got another nexus.
PS - I did have one of them argyle clear body cases on it that fit the N1 very snug and tightly, and wonder if that had somethin to do with power button goin out since it was rubbing against it repeatily.

same story happend to me, with a regular daily usage. It really bummers me, i unlocked the bootloader too, so i cant send it to HTC.
And I can't sell it in this condition too, sux!
Anyone with the same problem that sent it to HTC?

My wife had her's for about a week before having issues with the power button. Got a replacement and haven't had issues yet.

I had the same problem as the OP. Had to push the button several times to get the phone to respond.
HTC swapped my original N1 with dust under the screen and then sent me one that eventually had the power button crap out.
My GF's Nexus One has had no issues at all and we bought around the same time. My current (third) N1 is now rooted so I'm crossing my fingers that I won't need to deal with HTC again.
I love both the N1 and Android, but from my experience, I'm shocked and disappointed with it's poor build quality.

Crossing my fingers, cuz my power button still "works the first time, most of the time"..

Yea I gave myself a good month of testing this phone before even considering rooting and I'm glad I did.
My first unit was rooted and it was hell to get htc to support my fix over a dead pixel so naturally on my second phone I avoided rooting.
With the build quality on these phones (unfortunately) I would recommend NOT rooting for a good month or so to make sure you don't need warranty support.
I've ended up doing the repair option because I can never justify a $529 hold. Will get a ****ty flip phone loaner from Tmobile for the time being.

sorry to hear your issues but thank you for pointing out that app "no lock". I've been waiting for something like this! Now I can wake my Nexus with the volume button rather than the power button(wear and tear) or the trackball(it gets dirty from touching too much so I never do).

Have any app can replace power button?

I got a ****ty samsung flip phone loaner from tmobile. Ironically, I feel the call quality on these old phones are better than all the smart phones i've owned lol

Will this issue eventually happen to every one? That would be horrible..

Phone was never dropped and was in one of those gel cases. I use my phone heavily but no more than I've used any of my other phones. That power button is definitely not made for heavy use. I'd hope froyo has a trackball awake feature because from what I read on the interweb this problem is definitely not exclusive to a select few people.

That really blows about the power button. I've heard of that alot now and feared it as well. I'd never heard of the "nolock" program so I'm really glad you mentioned it. Downloaded it and fired it up. Talk about a sweet program, I can't believe it flies to far under the radar. I'm not rooted so it's definately a great program as I wanted trackball wake. Plus you can create a widget on the desktop so you can toggle it off. Sorry about your phone but thanks for the program. I hope you get your phone fixed soon.

Wow a 1 day turn around. My phone should be back here tomorrow in the morning. Seems like HTC customer care is improving?

Eh TBH I've heard of iphones with the same problem. Manufacturing tolerances in any product inevitably produce a few faulty units...that's what the warranty is for.
Just be glad your N1 will never decide that its automatic backup is now encrypted and password-protected and that you can't use your phone until you figure out what the password you never set is (happened on my brother's iphone 3G)

Can you please explain how to remove the power button? Can it be removed alone or you have to remove all the screws and body of the phones?

[FIXED]: Phone Laying Flat, HOME/BACK are Non-Responsive

So you've played with changing button sensitivity, heard about perhaps removing the screen protector, but still don't get it?
I think I might.
Try this, let me know if you guys can confirm, then perhaps we need to send info to HTC?
Unlock your screen
Place your phone on a level surface so its curved back can rock back and forth.
Enter the app drawer, so pressing HOME will actually do something.
As gently as you can, steady the phone with one hand, and touch HOME (It should work)
Now, re-enter the app drawer and press quickly on your phone's HOME key. This will cause it to quickly rock back and forth a bit and shake.
Press the home key all you want, it shouldn't work... especially the more you bang on it.
Wait 10 seconds.
Steady your phone again, press HOME gently. It should work.
The theory? Something is programmed in the phone that if it detects rapid shaking, like maybe in a pocket or being handed back and forth during watching a video... to turn off the buttons to prevent undesired actions. BUT, the curved back of the phone naturally lets this motion occur so it's triggering when it shouldn't.
If you're particularly twitchy, maybe that can cause it from time to time while even in hand too?
SOLUTION:
Run calibration tool a few times until the symptom goes away. Try alternating between pressing more firmly or more softly to make a difference. Take care to center your fingers on the letters.
If you experience bad button behavior while phone is on a flat surface, re-calibrate:
SETTINGS->Language and Keyboard->HTC Sense Input->Advanced->Run Calibration Tool

I couldn't replicate this problem. The home button works as intended while being rocked. I also haven't found to have any button response issues that some encountered.

Serious note though... yeah always have thought the buttons worked fine too and thought other people were crazy...
I lay it flat though casually press them, they go away and don't come back.

Also couldn't replicate it. Basically the home/back buttons work when they want to, which apparenlty is about 95% of the time. The other 5% is just purified annoyingness.
Allegedly HTC has fixed the button problem in 1.29.XXX.12 which so far has only rolled out to unbranded phones in Europe and Asia. However if you have the international phone you can install the newest Android Revolution ROM which is based on the .12 software. Everyone who has .12 seems to agree that the button sensitivity issue is gone.

Re-ran calibration tool pressing normally and it seems to have fixed it.
No amount of shaking or rapid pressing causes the phone to miss a button press.
This is with US Version of phone w/ screen protector.
If you experience bad button behavior while phone is on a flat surface, re-calibrate:
SETTINGS->Language and Keyboard->HTC Sense Input->Advanced->Run Calibration Tool

[Q] Active Display turns on when phone is moved.

This might seem like a dumb question but whenever I set my phone down and it is moved even in the slightest the Active Display lockscreen turns on. Is there anyway possible to disable that?

That's the cool thing about this phone. Don't worry about it

You will get used to it and come to love it. the great thing is that it doesn't adversely effect your battery, it uses the special built in processors. I thought it was weird at first but now I just tap my phone or bump the table to see my notifications.

I love it because I never have to push the power button to turn my device on. This is a great way to save wear and tear on your power button. A lot of devices that rely on one button all the time (power button) end up with that button not working anymore. If I didn't have this option I would be using my volume rocker to power up my phone.

This is easily my favorite feature about the Moto X. All I gotta do is pick up my phone and it automagically shows me any notifications and is ready to be unlocked. Power button? What's that?

I like this feature. I usually tap my finger on the screen or press off to one side so the phone rocks slightly on the curved back to get the display to come on. As someone else said, it saves a lot of wear on the power button. I can't tell you how often I clicked my Razr Maxx on just to see what time it was, and clicked it off again immediately. The button never wore out, but it's nice not having to do it at all.
I do have a question though. I got the phone on Wednesday and didn't notice this at all until this morning, and I don't know if it's normal or not. While getting ready for work this morning I noticed the Active Display fire on and off a few times in a row. I thought since it was right at 7am that I may have gotten a few emails close together or something, and didn't worry about it.
When I got to work I set my phone on my desk and was reading emails and such and I noticed the display puling on and off about every 5-6 seconds. It fades in, holds for maybe 1 second and fades out. It only had one notification, for Plume (Twitter), which only polls every 15 minutes in the background, so I knew it wasn't getting new notifications repeatedly.
I can't remember if this was happening yesterday and I just opened it up right away to see what it was for, or if something actually changed. I disabled Plume from the Active Display list, which didn't change anything, I got the same result for email (Maildroid) and Snapchat.
I guess it kind of makes sense that it repeats, as there is no LED on the phone, but it seems a little excessive. I don't know how much power is saved by using white on black in the small area of the screen, but it's bugging me a little because I don't remember it doing this before.

It's normal. When you have a notification, the screen pulses instead of having a notification LED.
I haven't measured it, but it's my impression that it slows down the pulsing if the phone sits quietly for a while after the notification happens (I seem to notice that, if I ignore the notification, I don't see it as much). It really uses almost no battery, though, so don't worry about it.

Does the phone always light up when driving? I don't remember it happening on my old X but it's lights up at every bump on my new X.
Thinking I've frozen something I shouldn't have. Did not use assist on either phone.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm guessing yesterday I either cleared them quickly, or they were present long enough to go slower and I didn't notice the repetition.
I will have to play around with what I actually want notifications for. Plume (Twitter) is the worst, followed by email. I wish I could turn on different channels for Plume so that Mentions/DMs could go to Active Display, but regular tweets didn't, but still have it do all in the notification shade. I might have to just settle for not getting a notification for all new tweets. Or increase my poll time...
Email might get shut off too. I get too much spam to care, and rarely get any emails that are urgent enough to warrant it.

Yes, mine lights up when driving Lol. The second I press on the gas it lights up, tripped me out the first few days owning the device, but I'm used to it now.

Button-less Wake!

The main defect with the Note 3 is that it requires a button-press to wake-up.
Let this thread be a collective bounty of alternative solutions until we can Slide2Wake which requires kernal changes and AT&T to unlock the bootloader.

Why would you want a huge wake lock like that? A simple press of the home button is much easier IMHO. I'd rather not have to swipe across the screen to turn the screen on

You're right. It's a considerable battery drain. The surprising thing is.. in the end, the smoothness of button-free operation becomes *worth it* IMHO.
I turn my phone on and off a lot to check stuff. I'll look at my to do list then press the corner SwipePad shortcut to turn it off. Then I'll remember something while moving up a bit in the line and **without even looking down for a button** and half-entranced in contemplation still I'll swipe from one side of the phone to halfway to the other and it is ON by the split second both my hands hold it to to make a note or reminder, look up something, etc. after which i'll immediately press the corner shortcut again to turn it off and my phone stays in one hand while I people-watch.
For some reason this is much more relaxed and makes me feel like the phone is like a second brain where I don't even need to create mnemonic devices called loci as much like I used to.
Maybe that's what's making my memory kind of crappy. Maybe should go back to doing that for my to-do lists. Might improve my memory. ANYWAY. my point is:
(1) it's less mechanical effort to swipe and
(2) I like to save my buttons and don't want to eventually have to replace the home button on the Note 3 for like $50 or whatever.
I guess it's not that big a deal.
If I did have that feature though I wouldn't miss anything else from past phones especially since the Note 3 is big enough to fit in one hand BARELY and could do a HALF-swipe to wake feature.

I would like a solution to this as well. Tried the light sensor app but that wasnt working well. Really wish we had tap-on.
I really like not hitting any physical buttons because this phone is huge and unwieldy. Still love it though.

I assigned the power button to holding down the back button. That saves a little bit of button-life.
The app also is designed to support the same while the screen is off... but it doesn't seem to work yet.
Would be super awesome though to be able to turn the screen off and on while the back button is held. Just not there yet.
Screen on with swipe is the next best.. though much more battery intensive.

Has anyone just simply tried pressing the simple wake button on the side of the phone once? I mean you already have your hand on it most of the time since it is where your fingers are if you are holding the phone in one hand.
Also for you slider guys, it takes many more muscles to frown and it is the same to slide. Much better to smile and press one single button already under your thumb when you are holding the phone.

Congratulations Captain Obvious. You are the first person to ever think of that!

Read above about my experience with button-less waking in the SGS2.
Besides that, you're wrong, my thumb is actually closer to the screen than the power button when I am holding it.
And it's no effort at all. That's the whole point. It's the same slide necessary in receiving a call. No physical PUSHING required.
I can turn my phone on twice per second easily by linking one of the touch buttons to "power" as well. With zero concern for screwing up any physical buttons.
Anyway please only write in this thread if you have something that will contribute to the idea of "button-less wake"
I'm only looking for creating solutions to that.

I'm talking about my SGS2 (last phone).
If Note 3 has a button-less wake feature then can close this.
I think that won't happen till ATT lifts the lock tho..

Lack of physical home button annoy anyone else yet?

While I can understand the draw of having no physical home button (more screen, yay), it has already annoyed me a few times while typing and and trying to hit the space bar and instead hitting the button.
Maybe there is a stronger sensitivity setting that I missed?
Anyone done this a lot yet? I also noticed that the ability to hide the bar stops as soon as you have the keyboard open...

I am beside myself. There are times when I am getting irritated because of complacency and then there are times when I am loving the real estate...

I am having problems swiping up for the navbar and it hits other apps. Or especially if I'm like text messaging and I swipe and my keyboard comes up. I made the nav bar stay on and it helps but I lose the real estate. Hope with root we can disable the navbar and use 3rd party nav bar on the side.

My phone is still on preorder, so I can't check, but I'm sure I saw somewhere that there is a setting to set the required pressure to activate Home

Not in the least, using transparent nav bar layer and I have a gigantic screen. If you want black nav bar always use this. Install like an app and reboot, go to settings>display>nav bar>back ground color>select black>push slider to the right

I was annoyed at first, but I do admit I love the taller screen Samsung implemented this time by using the physical/capacitive button area for more screen space, unlike other OEMs content to stick with 16:9 screens and waste that space on soft keys. After all, Samsung lets you hide the nav bar with a quick double-tap.
Having to call up the nav bar for back and recents got old fast, but a Reddit poster clued me in on a neat hidden feature: if you force-press the home button, you can side-swipe for back or recents, no swipe-up for nav bar necessary! It does take some getting used to, though.

So get rid of the Note 8. The lack of a home button was implemented on the S8 series, it is the new norm.

I am coming from S8+ so no, it doesn't bother me at all. It took all of 5 minutes to get used to it on S8+

no. not at all. this is how it was before. I prefer this way and loving the ability to hide the buttons too. very happy.

Actually it is a pain in the neck, especially when driving and I switched from S8, still don't like it after 6 months. Not a deal breaker, but especially with full screen apps, simple one press turns into frustrating 3,4, sometimes even 5 presses. For that reason most of the time I have full screen disabled, but that beats the whole purpose of having full screen without buttons. That also forces fingerprint reader into back, absolutely huge issue when driving and having the phone mounted. There are workarounds, like having phone unlocked when connected to BT etc, but simplest solutions are the simplest and physical keys were simplest.

Coming from the Note 4, I'm instinctively keep going to press what's not there haha.
Only had it since 11am so can't make a proper judgement yet, it has got better in the last couple of hours though, so don't think it'll be long before it becomes just as natural as hitting the button was.

but it is there and that's the beauty of the phone. all that gorgeous glass and screen with nothing to take away from it. had no problem when I used older phones and tablets that were the same way. I predict you'll adapt fairly fast. I did.

I have the nav bar auto hide (swipe up to get nav bar), even when hidden you can hard press where the home button usually is to simulate a home button push

I would of NEVER bought the Note 8 if it still had the old, ugly, 2007 iphone home button.

Just hard-press area where home button is. No need to wait for anything to show up.

Coming from a Pixel XL it doesn't bother me at all. Just another Learning curve.

It has a physical home. Press hard in the middle 1 inch from the bottom edge of the phone. Great move on Samsung's part.
