Huge problem with G1...

Yesterday I was texting someone, didnt even finish the message because something else demanded my attention. So I close the keyboard and put it in my pocket.
5 minutes later I take my phone out, and its off. I try to turn it on but nothing happens. Tried taking out the battery and SIM, waiting a few minutes, and put them back in, still nothing. I take it up to T-mobile and they tell me its a month out of warranty.
So earlier today, I say "ehh what the hell" so I try again, this time I held the power down for about 10 seconds, while its connected to a charger, and it boots up! I get past the G1 screen to the Cyanogenized boot screen (5.0.7 test 5 if it helps...) and in excitement I call someone in to show them. As I pick up the phone to show them, the usb cable is yanked out, and the screen goes black. Never felt ****tier. Tried to get it to power on again....back to square 1.
About an hour or two later, I look over and the face keys and keyboard are backlit, but still nothing on the screen. I also noticed that if I take the battery out while its off the charger, the backlight for the buttons will turn off, but will immediately come back on once the battery goes back in.
Basically, Im stumped, and any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: Now the button backlight is off...

I think your phone didn't shut off actually.
Try the 3 finger solute!
Hold send, end, and the menu button.
I've also had this happen to me, and to tell you the truth it didn't turn out good. :/
After awhile My touch went completely out.
It happened when I was running an experimental rom.
Also try restoring a back up if you created one before it started happening. :/

Well I know its off, Ive taken the battery out, and havent gotten it to come back on except for the one time. And Ive removed the battery since then as well. Ive tried power+home, power+camera, power+menu+send. None of them have worked.

One of two things, hopefully the first:
1.) You have a bad battery, replace it, or borrow a friend's and see if that works.
2.) You have a new paperweight. In that case, my condolences, friend.
Seriously, though, from what you described, it sounds like your battery just bit it. Try taking it out and examining it for any bulging or swelling that may not have been there before.

The woman at the T-mobile store tested a different battery and a different charger, so in my case its not likely, but I will give it another shot, since things have somewhat perked up. Right now the button backlights will randomly come on and stay on for a while, slowly dimming, and then eventually turn off, only to come back on later.

After reading you tried different batteries, I think you're in the market for a new phone. =[
The battery idea was the only thing I could have thought of as well.
Hope you manage to figure this out without having to buy a new phone, though. =[

In regards to your most recent post, sounds like some kind of short. There wasn't any water exposure was there? I've actually heard of people having there phones in their jeans pocket and sweating enough to turn the indicator and fry the board.
But yeah, it sounds like phone death. I would totally disassemble it and check for any corrosion though. Who knows, you may save it, then you have fat bragging rights

They must be doing some serious running.... or be really, really fat.
Btw, you can check to see if your G1 got exposed to water, OP. Take out battery and there's a little sticker under the IMEI sticker. Its round. If it's white - you're good. Any other color (i think it turns red or blue?) there's water damage.

HD7 build quality annoyances.

power button: Too recessed and flat, to the point where I now have to use my fingernail to power on the device.
volume button: Flimsy to the point where I can literally slide it up and down. I can also hear it jingle when the device vibrates.
Backcover Flimsy, moves around too much and is never tightly secured.
hardware: When I unplug my device from the charger and the screen is getting ready to time out, it flashes green, then times out... (this looks like it's going to create bigger issues down the road)

Power button: 1 in 20 HD7's I have exhibited the behavior you mention. It went away however. I would advise against using your fingernails if at all possible.
Volume Button: Again, 1 in 20 have this, and unfortunately it's the one I carry around. Two other HD7's I personally used did not have this.
I'd try to get it replaced if I were you.

I'm 2 for 2 on the first two annoyances (power and volume button).
I'm getting it replaced again (for the third time) tomorrow morning. I've also noticed these problems with the store models at various T-Mobile stores.
If I have the same problem with my third device, I'm returning it and getting my refund. Omnia 7, here I come.

Hmmm... I don't care much for the power button placement, but I haven't seen any of the other things you mentioned.

regarding issue #1, how did the problem go away? did some mechanism inside shift causing the power button to pop out more? just wondering?
i also have the loose battery cover. very annoying.
also about the screen... havent seen this mentioned before. i have a slight gap at the left and right edges of the screen where it meets the chrome-ish border. its pretty easy for particles to get stuck in there. compared to the hd2, this gap is pretty noticeable.

I thought I was the only one with these issues lol, figured the recessed power button was just a design oversight

Seriously? I checked a batch of HD7 in malaysia, and exceptionally, all of them had this issue. You're just so lucky you dont have it

I knew I wasn't crazy in thinking this was an issue only I was experiencing.
I've also read several phone reviews, and a lot of the reviewers mentioned about the power button being recessed and stating frustration waking up the device.
I don't know how HTC can fluff up something so important. I mean, what good is a product if you can't power it on; wake it up? One would think they would put emphasis on having a solid foundation on the power button.

Melcali: Yeah, on one phone the power button managed to become flushed, to the point the user had to use their fingernail (even though i found it easy to turn on with the flat of my finger, almost like it was capacitive). However, next day it had 'popped out' a bit and had become less recessed and hasn't been a problem for him since.
daango: In addition to what Shu posted, using your fingernail is likely going to cause you to press the button in harder than it needs to be, which would likely cause the button to be crammed in more and more over time. If it can't be prevented, it can't, I'm just advising against it.

I've got two unopened spares. I'm going to crack them open and see if the volume button jiggles.

Honestly, I don't think it can be helped. Maybe my fingers are too round or something, but using my fingernail seems like the only option right now. I might try adding layers of tape on the button so its easier to press but idk yet... it might take away from the aesthetics

All five units I've come across so far -- my defective original (corrupted memory), my current one, a second defective one (also corrupted memory), its replacement, and an in-store demo phone -- have the same issues:
Recessed power button
Very difficult to press camera button (basically useless)
Loose volume rocker (the case opening is about 0.8 mm too long for the rocker, so it moves around)
Imperfect battery cover fit (the plastic cover flexes from the opening process, so usually doesn't fit perfectly)
Weak screen support in bottom-right (press a bit on the search key and you'll see waves on the LCD)
On the two that I've had long enough to use, the clear coat on the kickstand is flaking off, and the Windows Phone logo, which was barely visible to begin with, has almost completely faded away on one of them.
Kind of sad that HTC screwed up so badly given that the HD7 is a barely-modified HD2, which was among the best-built phones on the market.

wow, you have had a lot of problems. I'm still on my original hd7 since second week of november.
1. power button is slightly recessed, but no problems pushing it with my finger (not nail)
2. camera button does have some orange on it, but it functions properly.
3. volume buttons work fine, maybe a little slide to the rocker, but doesn't effect controls
4. no flaking of clearcoat, no wp7 logo coming off, no lcd discoloration no matter how hard I press on the search or back buttons.
5. Back cover fits properly. I haven't had much reason to pull it off after initial placement of sim card, thanks to phone not constantly freezing. There is a slight gap where the back cover meets the smaller cover.
What are you subjecting your phones to???
I agree the hd7 build quality might not be iphone, but it's holding up well for me. It's not like we have a lot of choices on t-mobile, the dvp has way more problems at this point.

amb9800 speaks the truth. I went through 3 different units that had defects to varying degrees. I had similar issues with the EVO as well. HTC are notorious for shoddy craftsmanship.

I have the same problems they started AFTER my 30 days .. So i havent tryed to go and change at my local T-Mobile!! Is there any loop in the contract or something that would let me change it for anither phone and pay difference/get a refund xD

Power button failure

First off, I know there are multiple threads not only here on xda but elsewhere on the internet that describe other cases of Nexus One power button failures. I believe mine is different.
I suspect this has something to do with it being submerged in a cup of beer for a half a second a couple weeks back (never letting that person touch my phone again btw). It's very intermittent and has gotten progressively worse, to the point where I think it'll eventually die and at that point I'll need to turn the phone on some other way. I think somehow it is a "short" electrically inside the device. It can sit on my desk and randomly turn on and off by itself, as well as make the reboot/power off menu pop up, as if I'm holding down the power button. This makes using the phone extremely irritating, especially now, as the problem worsens. I can't do much in Recovery, at least CWM, because the power button either turns off the screen or goes to the previous menu. And while typing, the phone screen will either turn off, or the reboot menu will pop up, and I'll accidentally tap something else. Frustrating. My question is basically...is there a way to disable the power button without opening the device? I'm guessing probably not, but it's worth a shot...I purchased the phone in 04/2010, from a third party, and it's no longer under warranty. I was planning on waiting to get the Galaxy Nexus, and if not, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. I've been dreading the day I need to retire my beloved Nexus One....and it looks like it's going to be sooner than I wanted.

Normally I would say there is probably still a little bit of water in the power button housing but since it was a few weeks back I doubt it. But I guess you could always try the bag of rice trick. If then I don't know and you may have to open it up :/

I had the same problem for about 5 months and it has sense sorted its self out without me doing anything. Now the power button functions 100% (knock on wood).
I had placed it top down in my cup holder while driving for 3 hours and had not noticed a bit of condensation from that mornings water glass. I got home, grabbed my phone, and noticed a wet spot on my pocket and my phone had water on the top. It was in the Case-mate case in my sig and I let it dry over night and it worked the next day after blow drying the inside. But a week later the power button was clicking on and off. That was the longest period of use my G1 has seen sense I bought my N1.
Some days it would go on for an hour+ and would wreck the battery life. I tried everything and was unable to find a way to disable the power button presses.
I did not open the phone even though it was a month out of warranty. My assumption is there was still some sort of moisture inside that was causing a short. Because you never had a warranty in the first place, I would say your best bet is to take it apart and let it sit in rice for at least a couple days.

[Q] Issues with new HTC One

I just upgraded to an HTC One, but am having issues with this one and may need to exchange it. Before I do I wanted to see if the issues were at all common or if there is a fix for any of them.
Issues:
1. The power button is sunk in a bit. Not flush, but below the hole. It is very difficult to push and has been driving me nuts.
2. The front buttons do not light up. I saw them light up once, but most of the time I have to guess where the buttons are. Also very annoying as back, home, and power are used frequently.
3. Over half of my text messages need to be resent multiple times. This did not happen with my previous phone.
4. Smaller issue but the volume rocker is difficult to press. Big difference from the HTC EVO 4G LTE
5. Do I have to force close the power app everytime I restart the phone?
6. How do I recent apps? Holding down home goes to Google Now.

Me too. I am gonna RMA it, this is a QC issue. Two of my other ones are fine, this one is bad.
2. The front buttons do not light up. I saw them light up once, but most of the time I have to guess where the buttons are. Also very annoying as back, home, and power are used frequently.
Does your auto brightness work properly? Many people were reporting problems with the ambient light sensor.
3. Over half of my text messages need to be resent multiple times. This did not happen with my previous phone.
I have no idea what this is. Google voice probs?
4. Smaller issue but the volume rocker is difficult to press. Big difference from the HTC EVO 4G LTE
HTC has sacrificed functionality for aesthetics. You'll get used to it, though.

Why would you do this? Does the power saver notification bother you so much?
6. How do I recent apps? Holding down home goes to Google Now.

Yes, a case makes it much easier because then there is nothing to stop your fingers from pressing the volume buttons. The bezel is the culprit here.

1: How flush is it? Mine is flush but I can still press it easily without a case on. With a case on, I have to place my finger a certain way.
2: The buttons are light sensitive. So if you're in the dark, they will light up. If you're out in the sun or in a room with the light on, they won't light up. That's one thing I love about HTC.
3: Umm maybe spotty coverage? Or it could be a defect. Not sure about that one.
4: Volume rocker is fine if you don't have a case on. Just try hitting it near the very top or bottom to make it easier.
5: Are you asking about the power saver notification? If yes then yeah, every time you reboot. Or you can just leave it there. I don't mind it as I am switching the power saver on and off quite often.
6: You double tap the home button.

OP, if it is hard at all to press the power button, return it or exchange it. My other Ones are SUPER easy to press. I have to get around to mailing this one in, but I'm not sure if I should because everything else about this phone is pretty much perfect.
And to see if your button lights are working, just cover the ambient light sensor with your finger. The one at the top left. Hold it for about 3 seconds. The lights should turn on. It think it's very smart that they only turn in when there is very little light.
I would have like a nav bar better though.

Okay so I'm exchanging the phone for the power button issue. Sad that the volume rocker issue will continue, but I can handle that one. The power button on mine is an absolute nightmare. I have to jam a fingernail in there to turn it on and half the time it doesn't work. Have to hit it just right.
The capacitive buttons do not light up in the light, dark, whenever. I cannot see the buttons and have to guess. Believe me, no one would love this feature. On my HTC EVO 4G LTE the lights came on. It gets annoying having to guess every time. I want the lights to come on.
My other big problem has nothing to do with google voice. I'll have full reception and not be able to make calls and text messages have to be resent. Seems like the phone is not working with the network correctly.
Yes the power saver notification is unacceptable. It is annoying to have a useless notification in the status bar. I'm not the only one it bothers and it needs to be removed permanently. Also I need Sprint ID to stop changing my custom screens. I would like my phone to work the way I want it to. I wanted an upgrade not a downgrade. When I get one with a working power button rooting should solve this, but if that wasn't an option I'd be shopping for another phone.
Figured out the double tap on home shortly after, but thanks. I still need to figure out how to stop Sprint ID from messing up my home screens. I tried disabling the icon pack for now.

That's sure not right. Hopefully your exchange doesn't do that, because mine lights up at all times of day.

Gone in 4.2, I believe. In the meantime though, you can long-press on the notification, head over to App info, and force stop the relevant app. Kills the thing quite nicely.

Can't really help you here. First thing I did when I got the phone was disable all of the bloatware (built-in Android disable function), although I later killed it off with Titanium Backup. Never had much an issue there though. Tried another launcher, maybe?

First a double negative is the only way this phrase works. Otherwise it's "I imagine having a case." which does not convey the point. Sure could go with "can't imagine leaving the phone unprotected" which is still a double negative without another "not" but that just seems nit-picky.
Also the first thing I do with phones when I get them is put a case on them. After many beautiful phones becoming banged up, scratched, ugly phones you learn that a case keeps them beautiful. The aluminum will scratch easily so putting a case on it is a good idea. There are clear cases so you can still see through. You could just be really careful and paranoid with it though it will probably get scratched anyway. It's up to you, but in no way is it odd or a contradiction to protect the appearance of a beautiful phone with a case.

Anyway, OP, I hope you can resolve these issues. The bloatware can easily be removed via root. The Power saver notification is gone in the 4.2 update. (We'll get that soon, hopefully)
The texting thing is bizzare. I really don't know what that was.

I think I broke my phone :/

TLDR: I was cuddling my gf to sleep while using my phone. I fell asleep too. The phone was in bed with us for a couple of hours, but I don't think either of us lay on it, though my gf may have put some weight on it while getting up from bed to go to the w/c.
This morning it was unresponsive to touch, after rebooting it twice it won't turn on at all
When I press on the screen 1/3 of the way down with a bit of force, I feel it moving a bit and I can hear and feel a click on the inside.
The glass is intact.

I fell asleep with the phone in my hand and I must have let go of it in my sleep. I woke up when my girlfriend was going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The phone was still in the bed near where my hand was when I was falling asleep, but it was also in the path of my half asleep girlfriend rolling out of bed. I checked to see if it was still alive by pressing the power button and the screen turned on. Satisfied, I put it on my nightstand and went back to sleep.
When I woke up this morning I tried using it. It wasn't responding to touch at all, not even the home row buttons. But the volume rocker worked and so did the power button menu, but I couldn't select reboot in the menu with the touch not working. I force closed it with power + volume up, and when it rebooted it still wouldn't respond to touch. I force closed it again and now it won't turn on at all. I tried numerous button combinations (power on + volume up, down, all three, holding for up to 20 seconds) and it doesn't respond to being plugged into the wall or to the computer either, no led light and it's not mounting on the PC. It had about 60% power left before force closing it.
The funny thing is is that I couldn't figure out what the cause was for a long time. I googled it and search results for Z1's "sudden death issue" appeared and I figured it was something like that. Or maybe it was a delayed effect of putting it underwater 2 days ago.
But then it dawned on me, it was (of course) what had happened in the middle of the night. The phone looks completely fine, but after examining it closer, when I press on the screen 1/3 of the way down with a bit of force, I feel it moving a bit and I can hear and feel a click on the inside. I wonder what that could be..
What are my options now? I got the phone just a couple of days ago. I doubt this is covered by warrenty right? User error?
I'm not sure if this is even the real cause though - I didn't see it happen.... but I guess it's the most logical explination.
My girlfriend is pretty small so I'd imagine she would have had to put all her weight on her hand or elbow when she was getting up to be able to break the phone like that. I have a foam mattress which probably absorbed a lot of the weight? If this is indeed the case, I'm a little disappointed in the build quality if this broke something in the phone's innards with relative ease.
Any advice would be appreciated. It's the UK model bought outside of the UK from a local retailer. This is my first good smartphone and I loved it for the short time we had together. I'm devistated about it and not really sure what to do next.

You should have a 14 day guarantee with the seller if you bought from UK..
I would go back to them and demand a replacement..

So I was just about to go to the sony store, I had the phone, cables and everything neatly packed up an ready to go. I decided to give it one last try just in case to avoid the all too common scenerio when it unexplicably magically starts working in the store. I plugged it into a wall charger and held down the power button and the red light turned on! I left it for a minute and then pressed the power button again, and the screen turned on with a battery charging logo! It looked like the battery was fully dead so I left it for 5 minutes and turned it on again. It booted up! Now the moment of truth: will the touch screen work....
Drum roll......
It does!
Everything works normally now. I have no idea wtf happened but I'm really happy that I don't have to deal with sending it in and everything.
Though I'm a little worried about what the screen clicking is, that's still there.
I'll post a video later and might take it in to sony anyway to see what they say

I decided to give it one last try just in case to avoid the all too common scenerio when it unexplicably magically starts working in the store. I plugged it into a wall charger and held down the power button and the red light turned on! I left it for a minute and then pressed the power button again, and the screen turned on with a battery charging logo! It looked like the battery was fully dead so I left it for 5 minutes and turned it on again. It booted up! Now the moment of truth: will the touch screen work....
Drum roll......
It does!
Everything works normally now. I have no idea wtf happened but I'm really happy that I don't have to deal with sending it in and everything.
Though I'm a little worried about what the screen clicking is, that's still there.
I'll post a video later and might take it in to sony anyway to see what they say

Glad to hear it

I have the same phone symptoms as OP. Except, I was using the phone just 15 minutes before it refused to turn on. Also, for the first time I noticed the glass making a clicking sound when pressing coming from the middle of the screen, inline with the power button. I`ve tested the phone before and never heard this clicking sound.
At this point, even if the phone fixes itself, I`d rather send it in for repair before the clicking turns into a screen fracture.
