getting official update when rooted? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi!
my xperia z bootloader is locked and can be unlocked, i'm still on stock rom 4.1.2.
i'm planning to get root and install a recovery, but keep the bootloader locked. will it then be possible to receive sony's offical jb 4.2.2 update when rooted and recovery installed? i know that once the update 4.2.2. is installed i will have to re-root.
thanks

Yes you will get notification of new official updates if you are rooted

Thanks for your reply.
But will it install? Just a notification would be useless...
Or will I have to get the update somewhere here on xda and flash it manually?

It installs, and overwrites your root. For now that's not an issue, but when 5.0 comes out it might not be possible to get root again due to SELinux being implemented.

Yes exactly as Tom mentioned, it will happy install from PC Companion straight over top, then you just need to re-root again.
4.2.2 would be nice first Tom

[Q] Updates

Hi,
I wanted to ask whether I will get the official OTA update if my bootloader says *TAMPERED*.
Also, what else could prevent me form getting the updates? I am running this ROM.
Thanks for your time.

Yes you will get the official update but you need to have the stock recovery installed, so when the update comes out flash the stock recovery using fastboot, do the OTA update and then reflash TWRP or CWM and thats it.
You'll need to lock your bootloader aswell.

Actually No you don't have to as long as you have the stock odexed ROM and the stock recovery you can do the OTA!
You can check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306880

Didn't work for me when I went back to stock, OTA failed but worked after I'd relocked my bootloader.

That's weird, it worked for me when I updated to 1.24.401.8 last week!
Thanks for the answers. My ROM should be de-odexed. That is a problem I presume?

It's needs to be the stock ROM in stock form, without modification, otherwise the OTA will probably fail.
Retested this morning, update downloads, goes to install but stops part way through and shows the red triange with exclamation point ... That's on a stock, odexed ROM with stock recovery.
Several times I have run ruu on pc to go back to 4.1.2 using 1.28.401.6 ruu, then with S off and super cid and unlocked bootloader have successfully received and installed Ota updates up to an including 2.224.401.8
I am convinced that ota are no problem with unlocked bootloader.
Don't know if s off effects this

Xperia Z1 update failed

Hi ya'll
I bought a Xperia Z1 second hand on eBay and found that even though its stock ROM and bootloader is locked - its rooted with some dodgy chinese superuser app. It is running 4.2.2 and keeps saying update available but it keeps failing when I try to install an OTA update that seems to be available.
1. Is it failing cause its rooted?
2. How do I unroot it so I will get the 4.3 OTA?
Thanks in advance.

Yes you can't update via OTA if it's rooted. grab a ftf in one of the firmware threads on here for the Z1 and do it manually.

Use flashtool to flash a stock rom
Thanks for the quick responses. Do i grab a 4.3 FTF file or 4.2.2? If I grab 4.3 will my bootloader unlock camera fix not get installed? Is that installed via OTA only?

Actually no, OTA still works even on rooted phones. That's how people can have root on 4.3 firmware with locked boot loader - they get the root on 4.2 and then update it via OTA. I did it myself, so I'm sure it works this way.
Seems like OP has different issue.
Still, solution is flashing an ftf, yeah.
OTA definitely works on rooted phones. Try installing SuperSU from the playstore, that will get rid of the chinese spam, then run the update again. if that fails just go for Flashtool. good luck!

Yeah. I ended up flashing 4.2.2 then got the OTA update. Now running CM11. Had a scary moment where I flashed TWRP from a thread here into the boot partition and I got the red blink of death, but must have been the wrong recovery to flash.

[Q] Updating to 4.3

Hi guys,
I have just rooted my new Sony Xperia Z (Android 4.2.2) and I would like to upgrade to Android 4.3.
I was wondering if there was anyway to get the update without loosing my root access?
I am pretty unexperienced at all this stuff. I've heard that "flashing" the 4.3 firmware keeps the root access?
Thanks,
-Lambo
Just flash a prerooted 4.3 through cwm and your root is preserved, just like that

If your bootloader is locked just update it over the air. If your bootloader is unlocked flash a prerooted Rom via Cwm or twrp.
Just flashing a ftf file via flashtool wI'll make you lose root

Thanks guys for the responses. Does anyone know where I can find a pre-rooted ROM?
There are several in the development section.

A question about upgrading stock rom on a rooted phone.

Hi, If I have a rooted phone, how do I update the rom? I have the stock rom. I guess you have to download the update and install it like you would any rom, but would this format my phone?

If you have a rooted stock rom, you will be able to receive update notifications from Sony and you can update using the offical methods.
However, the update will install the new stock rom without root, as this is not supported by the manufacturer.
There are some tricks to maintain root during an update, but there is no guarantee it will work.
(search xda forums)
FYI, for the current 4.3 stock release for V and T, there is a "one-click" root method.
Check this .

I can't update whilst rooted, the update fails to install. I would need to unroot before updating via the official method.

SuperSU has an option to remove root from your rom.
You can try that and see if the rom update works.

CyanogenMod Problem

I flashed my phone with CyanogenMod13, completely not knowing what I was doing. I realized there were a few bugs on CM13 like my camera not working and things like that so I want to go back to stock Marshmallow 6.0.1 so I can have FOTA and a fully functioning phone. I know it was pretty silly of me to actually attempt this without consideration but could anyone help me out on getting back?
I have a Z5 Compact E5823.
Thanks.
Just download flashtool, stock firmware and flash it
btw. It's Xperia Z section, not Z5
Thanks man, sorry about the wrong section.
Will I be able to flash stock rom and receive OTA updates? My bootloader is currently unlocked.
I have already tried flashing before and I am getting random errors each time, with all drivers downloaded properly.
I flashed it with Emma last night and it took me to 5.1.1, and I cant receive any updates, so what am I doing wrong?
I want to go back to stock rom with OTA updates, although CyanogenMod13 was great.

Nope, OTA not working on unlocked bootloader, this can brick your phone
How can I lock my bootloader? Or do you think its recommended I keep the bootloader unlocked?
I just wanted to go back to stock rom for OTA updates thats all.
Many thanks.

I don't even know what that is lol. I should've done research in advance before proceeding to unlock my bootloader. I did make a backup of everything though, I used a tutorial, I used TWRP to backup stuff, or something like that?
Also, is there no way to receive OTA updates now that my bootloader is unlocked? Will flashing stock rom not allow me to receive OTA updates?
Thanks for your ongoing support btw, really stressing me out lol.
