Hello everyone!!
I recently bought an Xperia Z, but the problem is that the battery depletes after 3hours of onscreen time?, i went to the store and they too found it strange since it should have around 6 or 7 hours of onscreen time.
They exchanged the phone and gave me a new one, and sadly that phone had the exact same problem( REALLY!!?!?!!), and to top that, it's with screenlight at 25% and every battery heavy options turned off.
So i went to the store to get a refund. In the store another guy had exchanged his Xperia Z 4 times till He got a Z with a battery that worked as intended....
I will never buy a sony product again after this letdown..
And i would definitely not exchange my phone 4 times to hit the "Working-Battery lottery!"
It seems there is some sort of failure in the release of many of the Z's released, i found this guy with same problem

I also have bad battery life, but yet I don't see your point of making this topic at all.
6/7h on screen time really yo? On a 1080p screen... maybe next year. There are plenty of people that reached 5h+
If you want 7h on screen time, get an iPhone LOL! That way we would get rid of you and you would be with the other sheeple.
Topic is useless, can't believe you made an account just to say that.

I don't get it, my battery lasts all day, I charge through the night and take it out at 7 roughly. Then I use it through the day playing games like shadowgun and using social networking sites like Facebook. I also use gmail quite often and I also watch YouTube videos aswell. If I have brightness automatic and battery stamina mode it can last me throughout the day. I haven't charged my phone sine 7 and I still have 13% charge left.

Pretty sure that wouldn't even work. One of the girls I work with just got an iphone 5 and the battery drains like crazy on that thing. She starts at 3am, and by ~8 she is below 15% and has to charge pretty soon after. Then she has to charge when she gets home, and again when she goes to sleep.
Meanwhile, I am one of the heaviest power users I know of, I use my phone for work (flashlight, camera, calendar, calculator, barcode scanner), frequently check facebook, ragecomics reader app, general web browsing and play store browsing, small downloads eg mp3, apps, flashable .zip tweaks from here, frequently check simpsons tapped out, play some dead trigger, watch about 30 -60 mins of movies, receive a few calls and texts, maybe 10-20 mins of music playback. Out of habit I normally pull my phone out every 10-15 minutes and unlock it, flick around absent mindedlu, then lock it again after not actually opening anything :\ not sure how I picked up that habit.
To top all that off, I have my screen brightness set to 100% with adjust to lighting conditions ticked, I have location services and sattelites on, auto sync on, 4g data always on, wifi on but location based activated, NFC on, and finally, also have better battery stats installed and allways doing it's thing as I am also experiencing some rougue wakelocks I am slowly dealing with (still stumped on what is causing audio_out2 and deleted_wake_lock)
Despite all this, my phone comes off charge around 330am, and doesn't charge till 8pmish when it finally runs out of juice. That is one hell of a solid effort as I have done pretty much nothing to help out my battery, and doing everything to make it struggle.
I have only undervolted slightly, and am using doomkernel on KA04 rom. I am not using stamina mode either. Infact, when I was using it on stock rom, I couldn't see any difference between using it and not using it. I can't really see how it would do much IF you had NO wakelocks (or very little). Besides knocking out LED all it really does it disable background processes, if you have your phone set up right you shouldn't really have any anyway:good:.
This phone leaves my previous galaxy S2 in it's dust for battery life under the same usage in anycase (I used to charge that thing about 3 times a day most days).

+3 or whatever that is up to now.
All phones take time and a number of charges before the battery stabilises, and start running at optimum.

actually on my iPhone 5 I get more like 9 hours of screen time, sometimes 10. Not saying that your friends account is false, but that sure is hell doesn't seem consistent with any battery rundown test I've ever seen.I can go 2 days without charging it roughly, I'm sure the incoming hate and vitriol for my use of an iPhone as a daily driver is about to pour in from the less intelligent Android users, but this is one of the reasons my iPhone is still my daily driver. That and a consistently good camera.
Cheers~
P.S. I have owned many many many Android flagships and am an experienced power user.
Since when did iPhones ship with battery stats?
Or is there an app for that?
Batteries need a few charging cycles before doing their job properly. It's like having sex for the first time. The first time you might be disappointing but as you do it more often, you supposedly become better at it. Batteries work the same way.

Can't believe you just compared batteries on a phone to sex.
My battery life is acceptable. Getting up to 4hours screen time or a little more from 09 - 22. At this time, I then have about 14% more or less. And this is by alot of whatsapp, messaging, maybe a call or two. This is not using LTE. I find it very battery draining so I stick with 3G. Besided i am on WiFi most of the time.
So as long the phone can do a whole day without charging in most normal days for some people that don't travel alot, I ffind the battery acceptable

They may be updating the WiFi models to honeycomb next week. I have the 3g model. It is good, except the battery life is not good ( max of 4 hours). The screen is 800 x 480, but I find it quite nice. Get rid of the Dell stage launcher. It is very snappy. I'm pleased with mine. Edit: the honeycomb update is supposed to help the battery drain issues.
The form factor is great, fits the hand well and is good for carrying around. It won't charge from a computer USB, but will operate while connected. It has to have the special mains charger to actually charge the battery.
Edit: some people have reported a problem with " read only" memory, but I have not had any issues.

FOUR HOURS? Wow. That sucks. My Wifi Only with wifi on I think it's around 10, with wifi off at screen off, more like 50. All assuming standby with no use etc..
I wanted to add one more thing about the USB connection, it uses this stupid proprietary, hard to plug in, potentially not reliable (IMO) dock connector for charging or USB, there's no microusb connector or such on the device. Personally this annoys me, I hate the dock connector. Maybe it's more robust than I think it is, but every night when I plug it in I wonder how many more times it's going to work.
My first one suffered nand read only (but i spend atleast 4hrs a week in adb and nvflash and fastboot trying to solve) cant send mine into dell cause i took it apart very easy 6 screws .....but being as i bought it new and got to make payments from tmous no biggie you live you learn ......my second one i paid like 150 cash for and its been great ive even tried to get it to lock the nand so i could figure out what the problem was, it seems solid as a rock
pros (1) great form factor
(2) 4g model keeps me connected to the shop when im out
(3) doesn't look as cheesy as some of the other models out there
(4) great for ICE (in car entertainment) movies, gps, streaming music over 4g
Cons (1) battery
(2) if you do any gaming or video make sure your not gonna use it for the rest of the day ....lol
(3) and finally yes there are people out there that will oooo and ahahah over your new ipad .....until you tell them its not one and then there like O....its one of those android junk tablets then isn't it
sorry for the slight rant ....but boring day at the sign shop .....back to making stickers i go

I don't use the wifi off at screen off because it requires the table to re-acquire the wifi. You are the first person to claim 10 hours of use, much less 50 hours of standby. Most people have experienced along what I claim, about 4 hours max.
Or are you saying that the device is on standby for 10 hours? That is possible.
I get 10 to 12 hrs on moderate use, mainly web & light games throughout the day. I would imagine that it might last 4-5 hours of constant use.

I really like mine now that I got the read-only error fixed by Dell. And for $208 that is a pretty good deal. I say go for it.
I really like my Streak 7 Wifi. Bought it for $200 a couple of months ago. It does everything I want so far and with Honeycomb on the way even better.
I would definitely consider the new Amazon Kindle Fire coming out in November for $199 if I was currently in the market. I don't know how the Fire is locked down or anything yet but I would definitely find out before buying. The hardware seems to be a bit more modern in the screen.
With that said I still love my Streak and have no regret in buying it.
Thank you for all your input and decided to buy the streak. I had a streak before but it has the read only problem

Reconnecting to wireless is about 5s.. By the time I unlock it and go to an app, wifi is up... Completely a non-issue. If if you use something like Green Power, it'll continue to receive email etc, and I have it leave wifi on while connected to AC.
As for my usage, I pretty much said exactly what i meant..

So just to repeat it.. Standby, 10 hours with wifi on, 50 with wifi off. I've never really measured run-time with the screen on the whole time, but it generally uses 12-15%/hr in normal use, higher playing games or other heavy CPU stuff.
I've had days where I'm doing a lot with the tablet, such as a few hours programming a new thing in Tasker, playing Zenonia, browsing news etc etc.. Never have I had it dying before bed, maybe 20% at the end of the day at the worst.

Odd, I've done nothing special. Haven't removed any of the silly stock apps, stock ROM, using a custom kernel but it didn't change battery life (added tun.ko). Well this really equates to the number of running apps etc.
But on an average Display accounts for almost 65-70% of battery drain and on a whole with moderate use my phone lasts more than a day ~ 28 hrs.
Samsung does have settings which optimizes the screen display to consume optimum power.
Cheers
Average 4-5 hrs. There are other people in this forum who have reported this too.
Also note: it would totally depend on the apps running, signal strength etc

I EASILY get 4 hours, I can MAYBE get 5 hours. But I'm always between there 3G always on, wifi when I'm at home. Screen brightness at auto.
Put in a fully charged battery (I have two), it was idle for about 10 minutes when I went to the loo. Other than that, I never put it down. Browsing, texting, tweeting, checking Facebook, scouring through Android Market, flipping through photos on Gallery, made two phone calls, Angry Birds, read an eBook...
Finally gave me the "connect your charger" warning after five hours.
my daily use
on stock rom KK1, rooted, some bloatwares are frozen in Titanium backup
screen auto brightness
3-3.5 hrs screen on time, mostly for internet data streaming app, like XDA, Gearslutz, FML, Engadget, IGN, youtube , internet browser
3G always on(HSPA+ 21mbs)
30 - 60mins phone call
2 - 3 hours music.
few photos
LOADS of whatsapp texting
some emails from gmail app
some facebook checking
syncing are ALL on, (google, whatsapp, facebook)
my phone battery go from 100 to 0 % in around 11 to 12 hours.
Thanks for all the replies guys.
I've decided to go back with the Nexus.
As much as I want it to, the Note simply wouldn't fit as well with my lifestyle.

not to totally derail from the topic here, but why? i'm quite curious because i'm on the Note now but thinking of making the switch to Nexus...
4-5 hours with browsing YouTube forums. If trolling it gets less jk. But can't say exact because all this is done at work so i am putting it on charge when it is near 20-30% so when i leave from work it is fully charged no need to spend electricity at home that's why we have the work place. So i charging it from every 12 hours or day depends if i will see a movie when going home a 1 hour trip from work or i will be listening tiesto's live cast. 3g always on automatic sync is off, sync is on, Samsung push off, weather app with 3 hour sync. Brightness at low till medium or automatic depends of the mood.
Charge it when you can a Samsung original battery costs 30€ GG
Hope it will help a bit.

Tbh, it's only because of my job and the size of the device. I make a good 20-50 calls a day at work, and since I don't use BT headsets I imagine it would just be awkward having to pull a device that large out all of the time.

I actually find it to be more comfortable to hold to my head than my previous smaller phones. I can grab and hold it for extended periods without any finger cramps, since it's a good size for the hand. The included headset is actually really nice, IMO, for longer calls.
I installed more than 100 apps, and loaded 7 pages of homescreen by nova launcher with tons of widgets. It runs much smoother than Gnex with 4.1 and Att One X with 4.0.4 with similar loads. Though there's still slight hiccups at initial swipes. After the widgets' been loaded up, swipe between home screen is buttery smooth. Multitask button is also much more responsive than the other two.
However, my biggest compliant with this phone is the battery. It only ran through 8 hours with less than 2 hour screen on time today! Oddly, Google map used 26% of the battery when I didn't use it at all. Android OS also drained a lot of juice.
Any idea? I think screen should drain 50% of the juice at least.
Try turning off Google Now. I believe that when Maps and Android Services are the major hits to your battery, it's caused by Google Now. I get much better battery with it turned off.
That said, Google Now was one of the major things I wanted to love about Jelly Bean, and to have to turn it off to get decent battery life is ridiculous. Here's to hoping they sort that out eventually.
Those stats are typical for a first charge. I had similar results at first but after a few charges my screen on time jumped up to about 4hrs. I keep Google Now on.

LOL...that's exactly what I thought. I would think after downloading, installing, and configuring all these apps the battery would understandably decrease quickly. In addition, Google Now is "learning" our habits/info. Give the phone a couple weeks after the "honeymoon" period and I'm pretty sure battery life will get better.
I've sort of come to accept the fact that keeping GPS enabled on an Android phone is an unobtainable luxury. I keep it disabled until I'm actually ready to use navigiation, and my battery life doubles as a result. Annoying considering I have GNow, location history, etc disabled and have NO apps set up to poll the GPS - there's no excuse, but whatever, it's a bug.

If I do this, does WiFi stay on all the time or does it just turn on when it needs to find your location? I usually have mine off and only turn it on when I am at home.
I've turned off Google now and disabled Chrome. I've never had problems with maps. Though maps will start to do **** if you have searched for something that requires the maps to be turned on but you actually haven't turned on maps.
Wiped device, rooted, installed the 4.2.1 image direct from Google, fresh.
MUCH better than starting stock at 4.2 and OTA'ing to 4.2.1.

No, he just hasn't had an Optimus G. That device has the worst battery. Nexus 4 is somewhat better.
How many charge cycles has your phone been through? I think you just need to give it some more time to settle in.

what's the consensus on first charge? mine is arriving Monday and i was thinking i would hop over to the nearest t-mobile store and get
a new sim for straightaway. Should it be booted up and charged to full, left off and charged or maybe run down from whatever charge it comes with?
To be honest I was expecting better battery life with 2100mah and stock Android but it's really not that bad. It's just average. After some tweaking and keeping an eye on running apps in the background I'm pretty happy with the battery.
I am getting good battery life, 16h off charger at 45% 1hr 49min screen on
My battery life's doing just fine. It's draining a lot as I install all my apps, but that's a given. When I use it modestly, it performs like a champ
I'm not trolling. This is like my third charge cycle. The first one with my usual apps all installed. 100 app is what I usually put on my android phone. They've been quite consistent. I use to do 5 homescreen but i decide to stress nexus 4 with 7 pages. In addition, 1h 50min screen on time is not bad considering it only takes 14% of the battery. Which means if screen takes 50% of batterry, I will get more than 5 hours. That should be more than great. So the problem is why Google map is draining the battery when stats page shows it's not really active. You can see from the pictures that even if the screen is not turned on, the slope is still very steep, that's what I hate about. Why cannot android simply standby as power-efficient as iphone? Some posts suggest that i should turn off gps and let wifi to set my location. I'll take this advice and hope for the best.
Hi All,
I've been considering switching BBerries @ work to Sony Xperia Z for 2 reasons - 1. Android & 2. Apparent resilience to shocks, accidental drops
I've had several friends buy Xperia (TX mainly) and they reported a lot of instability. I'm generally advised against getting one for business purposes.
Now I've got more experience with Samsung phones and AOSP so my question to the community is. How good is the Z out of the box. Would you advise to flash a specific stable firmware or just going vanilla?
Lastly how's the resilience of the phone? There are some impressive videos on youtube as well as underwhelming ones (mainly due to the plastic protector that scratches super easily)
Oh and I'm open to suggestions as well for other models/brands (requirement is running android 4.2 at least)
Thanks

Is it that bad of a phone?
I have Go and Z as daily phones. I work for cnc & industrial maintenance. So far (about 10 months) both phones has survived without major failures. Few drops and lot of moisture and harsh environment. Best thing is you can rinse phone with water it it gets dirty. I would recommend to get GOOD screenprotector and for Z just some simple cheap case which you can replace if it in bad shape.
Only thing is using phones with gloves on. Basic thin gloves are ok but usually gloves with protection against sharp objects won't work.
And also speaker is the weak spot. Some of my friends clean the speaker with magnet if it gets dirty. I haven't tried this yet..

Thanks for your reply. Have you experienced any software bugs, restarts, etc? Do you have your email pushing to your phone all day over 3G? How's the battery life?
Thanks!
With Stamina mode on it's day to three days. I use K9 with listmail widget and it's working ok. No real problems, and using with dock it's good for office use. Depends quite lot of Internet usage and other stuff. But no real complain yet. Just new keyboard is not so well suited compared to old T9.

That's quite a lot of battery (if it even gets close to 2 days) What about without stamina mode on?
I love Swiftkey for keyboard. Give it a try
I just wonder if it'll last from Morning till Evening (6am - 8pm) on 1 charge with several calls a day and emails syncing all day as well.

Easily. I get 5 hours of screen on time on my phone, so a few calls and emails syncing will hardly touch the battery.

Just to be sure, are you talking with or without stamina mode? In my experience Data eats quite a lot of battery life particularly when syncing all day. It oftens prevents deep sleep if you got bad reception.
And is there a 'better' firmware for the phone? I seem to see various issues with 4.3 on the Z

Screen on time isn't affected by stamina mode, as stamina mode only activates when the screen is off. Stamina mode only has a negligible affect on battery life in my experience in any case.
If I use my phone normally, ie make a few calls, send and receive a few SMS and emails with some internet browsing, then I normally have in excess of 80% battery remaining when I get in at night. I have all syncs enabled at all times.
The usage you describe will never drain the battery in a day.

The Z has a glass back and front screen. I cracked my screen while the phone was in my pocket during a meeting. Maybe the ZR or the ZL may be better suited for you if you tend to keep the phone on you/ on surfaces that may cause it some shock / damage, unless you're purely interested in water resistance... In that case, the Z1, Z1S, or the ZR may fit your requirements....

Oh, I was under the impression the Z had the same protection as the Z1, ZR, etc (except for the difference in water protection)
FullHd screens draind battery like hell.
I also use z as primary phone for work. 3 exchange accounts connected via push settings, linkedin account and also every kind of messaging application works on background. (Working international, everybody uses different mesaaging system, so i have to install all of them.)
Also social media applications like facebook, twitter, instagram, pinterest etc etc.
Bluetooth sbh50 connected allday. At least 3 hour call and 3 hour music over bluetooth device.
Several remote connections made with phone. Also wifi hotspot in day time.
Still i can get one full day with one charge.
I've allways set my device to one kind of network. 3g always.
if you use 2g/3g/lte section, phone will allways look for faster network in area. That mean your phone allways in search mode. That might kill your battery in several hours.
That situation is not for only xperia z, search mod will kill all phones.
Just keep in charge while you are sleeping, keep battery for when you need it. If you sleep and recharge for tomorrow, let your phone to sleep and recharge for tomorrow.
You might also consider to get Z1S. 720p screens more battery friendly. I have also xperia sp. Definitely more battery frindly because of screen.

I appreciate the details. May I ask what firmware you're on as well? I may consider the Z1S. As a reminder this is for use at the office by my colleagues who have been on black berries so far. So obviously they'll complain about the battery. But the scenario you described puts my mind at ease.
I'm using latest version .569.
But still if you compare with blackberry all smartphones will take lower battery usage. Because of blackberry devices a little dummy phones.
How big your screen you will consume more power, how fancy and complicate your device, will consume more power.
Recently my company renewed all phones. All blackberry users are still happy because of more friendly and powerfull phone.

Hey guys, looking for some input here.
Im coming up on the 14 day return policy for the nexus 6, but im really thinking of returning it and going with the note 4.
The only issue i have with the phone is battery life. My phone seems to gulp it down. Now i do have many battery draining features turned off and standby time is excellent. Its when i actually use the phone i get massive drain, whether it be facebooking, web browsing, or playing games, the phone loses a lot of life! My wife used the camera this past weekend for 20 minutes according to the stats and my percentage dropped 25%from 80% to 55% within 1/2 hour!
My brightness is also on adaptive at 35-40%. For the life of me, it just seems i cant stop the battery drain.
I know going to the stock note 4 battery is about the same, but Zerolemon is releasing the note 4 10000 mah battery later this month. I had the same battery on my note 3 and loved it, ive never killed that battery. Yes, itll be a brick, yes but im thinking id prefer battery over function.
I do love the nexus, especially the screen size and the front facing speakers, and i will lose those with the note, but having a dead phone by 6pm makes those features useless. Yes, i could charge the phone halfway through the day, but i was spoiled with the note 3 extended battery.
SO my question is, should i chance the nexus 6 and hope upcoming updates solve the drain, or should i dump it and go with the note 4 and extended battery.
Frank
TL;DR NExus 6 battery dies too quick, return and get note 4 with zero lemon.
I went from the Note 4 to the Nexus 6 and battery life is about the same. I was actually pretty disappointed with the battery life of the Note 4 considering i had a Note 2 where the battery lasted FOREVER! I had originally decided that i would bypass the Nexus 6 and get the Note 4 instead, and at first i loved it but after having to deal with constant lag and dealing with samsung's crappy radios i'm glad i picked up the Nexus 6 (Note 4 is my new alarm clock at home)
It seems that your mind is already made up.. just get the Note 4

Are you using stock ROM or rooted and/or flashed? Sounds unusual for stock. I'd check your network settings and make sure your preferred network type and access point name are correct for your carrier but if standby time is good that probably isn't it anyway. I'd look for an app which gives more detailed battery usage information and go from there.
after going through an S4 and Note 3.. Im glad to be away from samsung. They have amazing hardware specs but drag it down with their crappy touchwiz. It's really unfortunate, the s-pen is pretty great.

im actually fully stock, with just a few apps. I have checked for wake locks and draining apps and down have any. Actually all the apps i had are the same as the note 3 i had. Nothing new.
Im on att and my prefered network is LTE, changed it from global a few days ago.
It seems the biggest drain is during use, not standby!

That is normal on any device. That battery for me is decent. However don't forget that you just got a new device. People always use new devices more initially before they settle into a normal use rhythm. Also I wouldn't worry much about the return date because this device is so hard to get that if you sold it yourself you would probably make money on it. Just give it time.

It's possible that something is wrong with YOUR nexus. I get 5 hours of sot with a stock rooted rom and greenify. Once I decrypt, ROM and kernel I'd expect 6 to 8 easy.

edit: nm i see you already mentioned it in the original post, and were just looking for opinions.
The battery life is obviously important, so it is certainly a dice roll on your part.
For me, I have a Note 2 and waiting for N6 to be available for me. I am so sick of Samsung forced apps and touchwiz. It's not rooted, but I don't feel like I should have to root it in order to get a basic OS without the addons being forced on me by the manufacturer, and then have the warranty voided because of it.

theres no such thing as "typical". we all use our devices differently, and have differing signal quality. you can really ever compare battery stats with another person because of that. only you know how you use your device. so the question is going to get changed.. by how you use your device, and your local signal quality, are you happy with your battery life?

Did you allow google to auto restore settings, apps, data at first boot up? Coming from a different device and OS version could have synced something funky that is causing this. I have noticed this before. Consequentially I never use this feature. I always set every device up fresh (same if switching Roms too in my book). I would try a factory reset at the very least. I have been trying hard to kill my n6 today with no luck, already 12 up time 22% battery left with 4½ hours SOT. Battery stats say I have 3 hours of life left.
Have google now on and going, 2 email clients syncing, g+ syncing, Tapatalk syncing, roughtly 4 active hangouts going, and updated 8+ apps from play store.
Been actively trying to duplicate a power day on this thing. With you experience, something is off with your description and worth experimenting some.
I did do the wireless sync due to some apps needing to recover data.
Maybe I'll try a reset and manually download the apps.

Ive had my phone for a couple weeks now. The first week I had it obviously I was playing around with it a ton and trying different Qi chargers to see how they work. My battery life was unimpressive at 8-10 hours. I was hoping to have at least a full days worth of time based on everything this is supposed to have.
Then I tried a couple things. I turned off the stupid fit application. I ran the battery all the way down until the phone literally turned off. Then I used only wall USB chargers to charge it up.
Now with the same type of usage 3-4 hours of screen time, Im typically getting at least 18-24 hours of battery life. I even managed 30 hours once. Anyway, Im extremely happy with the way this phone is holding up now. Obviously YMMV but I think if you find the right tweaks for the way you use it, it should last longer than you expect.

So Far Today by your stats i will give you mine.
@ 27% Battery Left after flashing Stock a 1.5 days ago rooted/decrypted
Screen is at 4:30:09 @ 42% Usage
Phone Radio 15:30:41 @ 4% usage
Wifi Active 3:24:12 1% usage
Held Awake 2:23:26 0% usage
App Usage 53%
I also have a persistent System (ADSPD) drain that while i don't know how much its draining app sucker puts it at 13.8% vs the next drainer of Android System at 7.3%
Just guessing maybe you are in a poorer signal area than I? Basing that on your phone radio using much more of the percentage?
For what its worth you saw my screen on time. GSAM is predicting 6h 58m total for the day if i run it to 0.
