Might give up Nexus S for G2x :(

Is it a good idea? I'm tempted to sell off my Nexus and get the G2x the 15th when it comes out.
Discuss?
(If this is the wrong section, my bad, I'll gladly ask a mod to move it or delete it)

I also have a mytouch4g. I am going to keep my Nexus S because it is too good of a phone to sell in my opinion but I'm definitely selling the mytouch and getting the g2x.

The g2x looks very good but just cause it has a duel core
Doesn't make it better then the nexus s the ns will always get the first updates
over any phone on android plus the 1ghz hummingbird is a beast ..... I do
Like the g2x tv out options but when comes to speed the nexus s is just so fast I don't see how

I really hate people that think more ram = more speed.
You probably think that 100 gb of ram would make a beast phone.
Anyways: Buying he G2x is plain stupid, android is not optimized to take advantage of dualcores, and the gpu is also weaker than the SGX 540.
The phone itself is kind of hard to hold, when I tried it in the store, it was just bad.
The sound is worse, the screen is worse, it lags more, there are no developers on any of the Tegra 2 devices (almost), its just a bad move to do that.
Stick with faster updates and a better phone in speed, stability, screen, sound, and other stuff.
The G2x is a great phone, but all its problems or disadvantages outweigh the positives.
Please do your self a favor and stop wasting your time thinking about this.

A lot of people really like the lg Optimus 2x. I also think I'm gonna get the g2x anyways because I like new gadgets. Paulobrien is one of the major android developers in my opinion, and he is using the 2x. Not trying to argue with you, just my reasons for wanting to get it, although I am not going to sell my nexus. I'm sure teamdouche will have someone with the g2x too, I think I saw koush or kmobs tweet about how they are gonna get it, I forgot which one of them

There are already many ROM options for the LG O2X. I don't see why the T-mobile G2X will not work with these.

Honestly I/O is right around the corner!!! I would wait to see what google has up its sleeves before I jump ship to the G2X. Its not all about hardware guys, the Nexus S is still one of the top of the line phones!!!

the SNS is not getting nearly as much attention from DEV & Coders as the N1 did

I'm sorry, but where are people getting this information from?
Everything on android uses threading or else the UI would be unusable. Threads are delegated to the available cores, more cores equals better performance.
You can have UI thread doing it's own thing and in the background have another thread calling sqlite, fetching a bitmap, crunching some numbers or whatever.
See that nice and smooth Flash video playing and your browser still being able to do other things ..threading.
You may not notice it on light applications, but anything that does heavier work will benefit from multiple cores.

Are you sure the Tegra 2 GPU is weaker than the SGX540? I lag on my Nexus S playing need for speed :/.
The screen is worse, I would miss the Super Amoled, maybe it's best to wait for the Galaxy S 2 and skip the G2X all together

The G2x does look nice but I've been spoiled to much with the super amoleddisplay on my vibrant so I'll stick with the SGS2.

Hopefully due to completely different software, hopefully the g2x has none of the 2z issues.

Yeah, it's a great phone, but the screen :/, after using SAMOLED I can't go back to LCD.

My thoughts as a newbie tablet owner.

The Nexus 7 was my very first tablet and in spite of Apple's obnoxious claims it is a great device and I certainly don't understand what advantages a thin aluminum back has over plastic. While I truly admire the openness of the stock android experience, I was completely underwhelmed by the display's washed out color and overall sharpness/clarity. I gave the device an honest try and rooted it as well as tried a few ROMs. While I was completely happy with the amount of development and amazing ROMs that are available I just couldn't get over the color issue. So I returned it and exchanged it for the new Kindle fire HD.
Immediately I could tell the difference... the display, unbelievably, was perfectly calibrated based on a slew of websites that I used to calibrate my monitors at home. I realize that I lost the openness of android and the ability to flash custom ROMs, but I have happy with what the device is capable of out of the box. I mainly got the device to watch movies and play games while I'm on the road which is a lot and it does that very well. To make up for the loss of openness I saved $50 and put it towards the 3rd party 2-year warranty which was actually cheaper than the N7's due to the Kindle being considered an E-Reader which was pretty convenient.

Interesting you say this, because I only experience washed out colours after video playback. I think this is due to a software issue on nVidias end and am hoping it gets fixed with 4.2. I'm happy you like your Kindle but seriously, why post this in a N7 forum? You're just going to get a load of hate as to how the N7 is better. I for one agree with those haters. I. Buy an android over a iOS device because it is open and customisable, the Kindle is neither customisable or open.

Other way for me.. picked up the KFHD and couldn't cope with it's half gimped android system that I went to the N7 and been happy since. Don't get me wrong, the KFHD has awesome hardware and better color calibration, I could notice the difference, especially since I had both in hand but since I returned it, I haven't missed anything from the KFHD.
The locked Amazon ecosystem was a real turn off for me, but if it works for you, great. Everyone has different needs and wants.

Believe me I did my research on the issue. I wanted to keep the device and it wasn't an easy decision. But for what it's worth, the specs of the Kindle are better, the color quality is certainly better, and the Kindle UI isn't all that bad. I was able to root it and put Google Play on it so really all I lost was complete customization even though I can use a different launcher.
I posted it here as a reference to anyone else looking to get the device... Again, the N7 is great and would have preferred to keep it, but it just didn't work for me and honestly I expected more from Asus/nVidia because an issue such as this is hard not to notice and should have been fixed before release.

Kindle is heavier... only has dual core 1.2.... half the battery life... no NFC... no true android OS... missing out on tegra gaming
Not argueing with your opinion of "liking" the kindle ... but it doesn't have better specs
Only thing they snuck in there was the nice dual band dual antenna wifi setup... that's a better spec
And the washed out color thing is just opinion... I don't even see it... but I'm not that picky about that I guess...
I messed around with the KFHD the other day and there's no way I would give up the nexus 7 specs for marginally better color rendering... nope

It is heavier yes, but the processor is at the very least the same if not better based on several sources, Amazon claims to have 1 more hour over the N7 (Though that could change with different ROM's and Kernels), sound is better, and the wireless is better. NFC/GPS is about the only thing (hardware-wise) that the N7 has over it.
Most of the Gapps can be installed and I have heard of several users getting pretty accurate locations using wireless and google maps.

Do you have the Kindle Fire 7 HD or 8.9HD?
The processor in the 7 sucks compared to Tegra 3,with the larger Fire have a comparable one.
And for what it's worth, all colors issues seemed solved with the new 4.1.2 update. Though have fun with your Kindle.

The 7 is the only one that's out. The 8.9 comes out next month. I'm no expert, but if you google the comparisons and look at the CPU discussions you'll find that what I said is true. The Fire's CPU is on par or better... not worse. I also had 4.1.2 on the Nexus I had.

If you're thinking that 1.2GHz dual core OMAP is as good as 1.3GHz quad core TEGRA 3... you're reading the wrong reviews... look at a non biased site like CNET... they do their own testing and show half the battery life playing video

THe Kindle HD 7 uses the OMAP4460 SoC, which is the same one found on the Galaxy Nexus. It's an cortex A9 dual core with a GPU that is also found in the original Samsung Galaxy and Nexus S, but overclocked. Tegra with is a cortex A9 quad core with a more advanced GPU. The OMAP4470 found in the 8.9" Kindle is another story. It does have a better GPU than the older OMAP 4460 but how it compares to the Tegra 3 GPU I am not sure.
Also, according to Displaymate, the Nexus 7 LCD panel is actually pretty decent. It is just hindered by bad software calibration which can be corrected with an update.

I agree with you 100% that the 4460 is behind the Tegra in raw specs. But having both of them my Galaxy Nexus out performs my N7 in daily use, it'll run circles. Both are running the same nightly on CM10. I think it has more to do with a slow EMMC, but that may be why the OP feels the 4460 is better.
I do wish Asus built better products though

In all fairness I may just take this Kindle back on Monday and pick up the 32GB Nexus if they have it and hope that it doesn't have the same issues since it's newer. The ads on the KF are a bit obtrusive and annoying to say the least.

The fact that you paid good money for it and they splash ads on it is the dealbreaker for me. If they subsidized it maybe I could understand.

I have a 32gb Nexus from Office Depot and the screen is exactly the same as the 16gb I had.
The Nexus is a better unit hardware wise but its whatever you like. The screen is something you spend a lot of time looking at. So make sure you are happy with it. Trinity kernels come pre-color calibrated to give that pop. Still might not be enough for your tastes though.
On the other hand you can flash custom roms on the Fire.
In my experience though, roms on those kinds of devices are far from perfect. May not be bad now but with newer Android versions, things will be missing and/or not 100%. Nexus devices really have longevity in this regards. Even in a few years, we'll still have the latest and greatest updates.
Updates and support won me over. Else I'd look at the Galaxy Tab 7 2. Walmart had them on sale for $249. Samsung would give you a true tablet experience and a nice screen... but updates from Samsung are sparse too.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong or you're doing wrong but my nexus 7 runs circles around my Galaxy Nexus. Both running cm10 also. If there is an app updating in the background my gnex is frustratingly slow, the 7 just flies.
Either way the Kindle is probably the better consumption device, but less capable overall and for most of us a non starter due to the os.

The Most Honest and Unbiased Review of the Nexus 4

I've had a chance to play around with the Nexus 4 for about a week now and I'm ready to give my full review on it.
Display:
The Nexus 4 has one of, if not the most, beautiful displays on any device I have every used. I know the word "retina" is thrown around a lot, but seriously this display is absolutely gorgeous, especially on full brightness. The viewing angles are the highest of any device i have ever used. Text is crisp on any app you use and I have still not seen any pixels. I have read that the One X's display is better, but since I have never used it, I cannot say if it is or not. But anyway, this screen is so bright and vivid and the colors really do pop. I wish the navigation bar buttons did not take up so much room or if the entire bezel was used for the screen, because, in my opinion, they take up too much space.
Design:
I believe this phone has the best design out of any phone in existence, The front is very flush and when the screen is off, you cannot even tell where it ends and where the screen begins. The rubber like band around the phone makes it very grippy and does not slip out of the hand. The back is absolutely gorgeous with the flush glass and the pixelated design really is beautiful. It is one of those things you have to see in person. Although there is a plastic banding in front of the rubber banding that is prone to nicks and scratches, like the T-Mobile Galaxy S II I had previously. There are reports of peoples phones getting very hot, the screen turning yellow, some rattlings from the camera housing, and some other problems with the hardware. This is expected for first round devices. My phones only problem is I too hear the rattling if I shake my phone, but I only hear it if I try to hear it. Another problem is the phone SLIDES OFF OF EVERYTHING. Seriously I bet my of the people that break this thing will be because it slid off of something. A case prevents this though.
Performance:
Stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean has one of the smoothest UI's of any device. It even tops my iPad 3. There is absolutely no lag in the OS whatsoever. This is because "Project Butter." When you touch the screen, the CPU gets fired up and is ready to go instantly. You can see this if you go into SetCpu and watch how the amount of CPU speed increases the exact moment you tap the screen. All of the stock apps run perfectly. (Except theres no December in the Peoples app ) The app switcher is just amazing and fast. It is so much better than any other app switcher available and it is great to have a dedicated button for it. The Nexus 4 is great at running graphics and performance intensive games like dead trigger, cod zombies, shadow gun, mini motor racing etc. all of these games have no lag whatsoever, because of the 1.5ghz quad core processor and 2 gigs of ram this thing is packing. Also, Google Now is amazing and completely integrated into your life. You will fall in love with all of its features like weather, traffic updates, sports, flights, translations, appointments, and regular search. But all of this amazing performance and features come at a price...
Battery Life...
I wish I could say this 2100mAh battery keeps this thing alive all day but alas, it does not. If you are a heavy user, which I am guessing most XDA users are, it will not last you throughout the day. On low brightness, sync off, and location services off, I find myself having to fully charge it again before the day is over. Now if you are a moderate user, you will not experience this as much. But let me give you an example of what happened today: I was at a restaurant with family for Thanksgiving. I left the house at 5:50 PM with 95% battery. At dinner I used the phone for a little over an hour and a half just browsing the web like looking at laptops on tiger direct, reading gizmodo, endgadget, cracked, etc, and when I got home at around 8:30 I had 46% battery left. I s**t you not. So heavy users beware. I hate using cases, especially for a phone this beautiful, but I might have to find a battery case to get myself through the day.
Storage:
This phone not having an SD Card slot like most android phones is a real killer, especially because it only has 8gb and 16gb. I unfortunately got the 8gb. I knew I was not gonna get the full 8gb, on my iPod touch 8gb I had roughly 7gb of usable space, but on the Nexus 4 you get barely over 5gb of usable space, and that just sucks for most people. Using the cloud to save pictures and music does help, but you can not get as many high graphics games because of this low storage. Which sucks because the Nexus 4 is great when playing high performance games. Again, I would highly recommend getting the 16gb. It is only $50 more. Im most likely gonna sell my Nexus for as much as I can and pay the difference for the 16gb when more are in stock. Hopefully Google does what they did with the Nexus 7 and makes the 16gb the same price as the 8gb and makes a 32gb model.
Camera:
This phone has a great camera. When you are outside, it takes some of the best pictures for a phone. Even the front camera does. And little things like how you tap the screen to access the many camera settings and the new photospehre, you will just fall in love with them. All of my photosphere pictures stitched perfectly. This device is not very good in low light situations, though. This is helped with the devices on board flash though. You can also easily edit your photos through the stock gallery app, and there are plenty of editing options for all of you instagrammers out there. They are mostly all very nice and work well. There is one problem I did have with the camera though. The HDR setting did take better photos, but I could rarely get them to focus, even when I focused manually. Maybe a software problem? Hopefully this is fixed in future updates.
Mobile Stuff/Miscellaneous:
Call quality on this phone is great and I have not got any dropped calls or any complaints from people on the other end. Text messages and picture messages send quickly. The new keyboard with its swype like feature is very good and accurate. I get great speeds on HSPA+. I am in Chicago and can get 25mbps download and 5mbps upload, which is great. You can also get it to connect to LTE if your network uses band 4 for it, like T-Mobile's will later this year, which is great for us Nexus 4 users on T-Mobile. The voice to text is absolutely amazing and almost always gets what you say. I have used Siri and voice dictation on iOS and it just does not even compare. I love how it types what you say as you say it.
Conclusion :
The Nexus 4 right now, in my opinion, is the best android phone out there. And maybe the best phone overall. It is a great phone at a great starting price. This thing has an amazing screen and has no lag in whatever you are doing. Really the only thing that kills it is the storage. If this had a micro SD slot is would just be so much better than it already is. The camera is great when outdoors and when you have sufficient light, flash helps a lot in low light, and the many camera and gallery features are great. The battery life is sub par, but when you're at home or work, you can almost always give it a quick charge when you need it, but you can not just add more storage when you need it. (Except if you use OTG devices.) I would highly recommend this phone to anyone out there looking for a great device. It is not complicated at all and it very noob friendly.

Yeah pretty good review. I find battery life to be very good on the N4 believe it or not. I reach almost 5 hours on screen time with 15 hours off charge. Thats with heavy use. My brightness is on auto, i browse the web switching from cellular to wifi depending on where im at, sync is off and i turn it on during the day to check my emails, stuff like that. Do a lot of tapatalk, few calls, lots of texting and little youtubing. I use it normally, not to fool myself and try to reach 2 days just to be satisfied. Oh yeah lol, since last night im using a custom kernel.

Great, unbiased review! This review made me want the Nexus 4 even more! Hopefully I can get one soon. :fingers-crossed:

I saw you post it before which is great, but I cannot go through the day with service sync off. To me that just defeats the whole point of the phone. Perhaps with an incremental update battery life will get better. Seems maybe too much stuff is syncing in the background and is keeping the CPU from sleeping. 5 hours is good though... I'd like more but that's really all I need.

I turn on sync every hour or so. Just don't need it on all the time unless I'm expecting an important email or something. But people should use their phones as they normally do, not just to reach a certain amount of screen time cause that's just ridiculous. So yeah, if you need sync on then just leave it on, personally I don't need it on all the time.

Why isn't your phone awake when the screen is on? I can't really remember but I think that on every Android i've had, when the screen is on, the phone is Awake

Picked up my N4 today and have been getting to grips with it, initial impressions are. It's fast though have had slow down. Gets very hot during anything using GPS or when playing games. Camera is average and when using the flash images are washed out. It's a bit early to say much about the battery life but after 1hr38mins, its down to 73%. build quality seems good. I thought it would be a bigger leap up from my old phone but am a little disappointed currently. I will continue but if it doesn't impress further it will go back. Do love jelly bean!

Good question, I have no clue. I just checked my current stats as I'm writing this comment, I'm 9 hours off charge with 2h 15 min on screen time and no awake time
I checked my battery stats when I had the note 2 and the line is all blue when the screen is on. I don't know....

Hi guys, if you use nexus 4, I think you will be probably disappointed by the battery life of nexus 4. Things seems to changed this year.

did you notice by any chance that battery test has been don on airplane/no sim with wifi on?
Any cellural reception has significant impact on battery life therefore it is most likley goi9ng to be the same or worse due to size of the screen vs battery capacity

Yes I do notice, but for the LTE internet browsing 7 hrs are pretty awesome, and they are using the default settings with wifi on

The same here. the specs even look better than iphone, lol

I think it might have something to do with the optimized OS. The phone can run the OS with a minimum of 512mb of the RAM. I was pretty disappointed with the Nexus 4 battery life but it was better than the Galaxy Nexus for sure.

Anyone know if the Nexus 5 also has G-RAM that's in the LG G2? supposedly helps improve battery life of display by about 20% if it's displaying static pages.

I hope the battery life isn't too bad. I decided to skip getting the LG G2 and instead ordered the N5.

Battery life shouldn't be that bad at all i suppose. From years now we are used to charge our phones one per day at least...this won't change for the n5. That said, i think this is a big failure of modern smartphones. Lg is tring to make a change, and it's a point to his favour i think.

Failure of a smartphone? What makes you say that? The software that is debuting with the phone is a huge push forward in mobile communications, that's at least a little win.

The thing that will probably greatly help the N5's battery life is that it's the Snapdragon 800... which has the same "bonus core" that the G2, Moto X, and other devices have that allows very little battery usage while the phone is asleep, while still being able to do stuff like play music.

You've misread him.

whoops! My derp there. In that case yea, I'll agree. Google should have but in a bigger battery, but alas I think they're really trying to stick with the philosophy of it being a developer's phone and less of a general consumer's phone.
That said the battery thing is the only thing stopping me from placing my order this very second...

I mean a failure of a generation of phones. Before the advent of smartphones the recharge of a phone came, how much a week? Three times? Even twice on some phones. That said, we had a great progression on software and hardware, with a clear loss in term of duration per single charge.
The advancement in hardware and software were not matched by the advancement in battery tecnology.
Someone said that you can build the best car at all, but you will need good wheels to make it run faster..Or in our case, to make it "run" xD

Got to admit, I'm a little dissapointed they didn't throw a USB 3.0 port on this beast for multi-charge bonuses :/

Amazing Google designed 4.4 to run on devices with as low as 512mb of Ram but they are not updating the Galaxy Nexus to 4.4.

It's not because of the RAM, it's because of the processor. The manufacturer stopped supporting it.

HTC M9 disassembled

After one week?
Well it's been 1 week now, and boy it's been great so far. Day 1 - set up. Day 2 - unlocked - rooted. Day 3 - wishing for s-off and Xposed. I kept my M8 as my phone while I was preparing my M9. Days 4 thru 7 - putting it through some strenuous testing.
I have almost 400 apps installed with many running in the background all the time. The M9 breezes through all of my apps with little hesitation. My M8 did well with all of my apps, but the M9 just seems to pop through them a split second faster.
I'm not a fan of benchmark tests; I believe they are flawed. You run a test, and then run one 5 mins later, and get 2 completely different results. Plus the tests seem to favor certain brands over others, as well as different architectures. I prefer real world testing. How a device performs using it daily in a real life enviroment.
That being said I did do some benchmark tests. My M9 performed incredibly well with both AnTuTu and Velamo. With Velamo the Metal score was 2302, Multicore 1981, and Chrome Browser 3516. All very good scores. With AnTuTu my score was 54728. Also very good, but these are subjective. I am fairly new to the Android phone modding world, but I have been building custom computers for 20 years. Android phones are just a computer, and as it is with all computers performance will vary depending on applications installed, and many other elements including environmental conditions.
Getting to the quality of the M9. HTC has created another masterpiece. In the tradition of the M7 and M8 the build quality is superb. it's easy to tell that you're holding a well built piece of equipment.
It looks and feels very much like the M8: however, with some nice subtle differences. The power button is now on the side, but it should have been placed above the volume buttons in my opinion.

I'm not sure how well it will be under normal use. It appears to be about the same as my M8 was while extreme power using. I'll know more about normal use battery life after I've calmed down a bit. Also I plan on tweaking the battery performance after I can figure out how to decompile the SystemUI apk. I'm getting about 8 hours the way I'm using it now.

Sad you have to tweak it though. HTC needs to optimize their battery out of the box. Why should we need to tweak it!

I agree, but I haven't found a high end smartphone yet that has the battery life that I want. Samsung, LG, Apple, HTC, none of them have performed well the way I use a phone.

That would be the way to solve the problem, but I'm sure that most people use their phones in a way that the batteries the manufacturers put in them are sufficient. Look at Samsung reducing the size of their flagships battery. I don't think they will try to accommodate us power users anytime soon.

The camera on this phone takes awesome pictures. I don't understand why so many people say it's not. Maybe they just don't know how to use such a fine camera.

Problem is that if you have a bad launch then you stay in that area as far as the market is predicted.. The camera is superb now., But No one will give it a chance since the reviews of the m9 has past .

There are many guides out there. I don't know why you couldn't find any, but here's a link to one. Follow everything closely. Make sure that you back up your phone via the HTC option in settings, because you will lose all of your data.
